Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove of Classics.......2001-04-12

Fans of tango as sung in the 1940s will be delighted with this well-chosen compilation of mostly vocal classics, some of which are well-known and others which should be. Though Anibal Troilo's orchestra, arguably the top tango group of its time, is featured on nearly half of the pieces, he used many different singers so there is a lot of flavor here. My favorites here are Naranjo En Flor, Vida Mia, Uno, Sur, Paciencia, and Ventanita Florida. Such celebrated singers as Floreal Ruiz, Alberto Marino, Edmundo Rivero, Alberto Echague, Libertad Lamarque, and Nelly Omar are featured, offering a little something to everyone. If you are a fan of the old styles, you will love this treasure trove of classics as there is not a loser in the group.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Find.......2001-02-12

I have been collecting tango music for some years. This little known CD of classic 1940's recordings is one of my most listened to favorites.

There are a vast number of tango anthologies, many of them mediocre at best. Some are downright awful. This one is superior in all aspects. Don't confuse it with the musical play and movie Evita!(which has charms of its own, but contains little tango), it's something else entirely.

Assembled by Gabriel Soria of the National Tango Academy of Argentina, it evokes the time of the real Eva Peron, notorious and glamorous wife of the populist President Juan Peron. Leaning heavily on the works of Anibal Troilo, but including many other notable artists of the time, the real Argentine tango is found here. Even though the original recordings were made a half century ago, the production values of this CD are quite high and the sound quality is excellent.

Close your eyes, and you'll find yourself in a Buenos Aires nightclub of the 40's. The underlying tension is of power and the way of a man with a woman. Buy this CD, and you'll visit that nightclub often.

It would be nice if..... would include some samples of the music for you to hear, but for now this review will have to do.
