Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

One of the leaders in the trend of big splashy revivals in the late 1980s and early '90s, Lincoln Center's 1987 production of Anything Goes was the perfect evocation of the 1930s, from the period pit band to James McMullan's striking poster art to the large photograph of Cole Porter that smiled over the stage like an approving spirit. While the score earns its share of authenticity by resurrecting numerous songs from the original score, it also tosses in a few ringers such as "Friendship" and "It's De-Lovely." (Porter himself did not mind when people staging his shows borrowed songs from his other shows.) Then-rising star Howard McGillin sings sweet ballads and the ensemble numbers are excellent, but the show belongs to Patti LuPone, who in the role of Reno Sweeney grabs the baton from Ethel Merman and never lets go. Her "I Get a Kick Out of You" is one of the great performances of her generation, and the title tune and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" make almost every other song sound like filler. LuPone was upset in the Tony race by Joanna Gleason, but the show did win for Best Revival. The booklet includes full lyrics, synopsis, production notes, and photos. --David Horiuchi

What can one say? It's Cole Porter.
OTOH, I *bought* the CD because it features all the songs for Anything Goes, which I've been cast in. So for several days it was ALL I listened to. [We're also learning our tap routines to this sound track.] I haven't run screaming from the car yet.
Solid, entertaining, recording -- recommended without caveat.

Not Anything But One of the Best .......2006-06-28

I have heared many recordings for Cole Porter 's " Anything Goes ", but I like this one the best. The opening song is a historic and rare recording by Cole himself. This CD is a revised version of this song that was played in Lincoln Center in New York. Pattie LuPone has a truly beautiful ,strong yet sentimental voice. I highly recommend it

A REAL CLASSIC!.......2006-06-16

A real classic from the authorship of a B'way legend. A work like this has great relevance because it stands as a wonderful recording for one of the greatest classics of the musical theatre of all times. Voices and orchestrations are wonderful. The title song sounds great in the voice of Patti LuPone. A cultural treasure to keep and listen over and over again.

revival is quick and snappy.......2006-03-22

This recording strums along with a quick pace and Porters tunes are alive with energy and excitement. Patti Lupone can be a little harsh for some but she does the tunes justice. Its got some dance orchestration , but still missing most the dance sequence as most cd's do.

Some bits are great, but others are mediocre.......2006-01-27

This is the only version I've heard of Anything Goes, and I think the sound is fine and Lu Pone is perfect as Reno, but some bits of this I just want to skip while I'm listening to it. I really think it's worth buying, because some of the songs are fantastic, but I feel that some of the other songs just weren't meant to be sung like this. I like Howard McGillin at the beginning, especially in 'You're the Top', but when he starts to sing all the romantic songs, he turns all sappy. This would normally be good, but it's like a sickening sappy. It happens with Anne Francine too. One moment she'll be singing with this great voice, and then go all high-pitched with an over-acted sweetness. Seriously, a shiver ran down my spine the first time I heard her sing 'Goodbye, Little Dream', and not a good shiver either.
Buy this if you want to, because it's still a great CD, but don't expect too much from anyone but Patti Lu Pone. Is there anything she can't do?

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Pianist Brad Mehldau's so-so excursion into atmospheric pop production, Largo, may be proving to be a worthwhile experiment after all. Having gotten that out of his system, at least for the moment, he sounds looser in the pocket than he has in a long time in returning to the ruminative piano trio format with which he made his reputation. In applying some of his quirkiest personal touches to jazz and pop standards, he also sounds--no offense intended--more awake. Hooking up with his longstanding rhythm mates, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau offsets his patented lyrical touches with antic minimalist strokes, bold vamps, and high-stepping two-hand strategies. Alternately spiky and seductive, his unaccompanied playing on an initially languid "Get Happy" is a winning case of the left hand pretending not to know what the right hand is doing. Reharmonizing Charles Chaplin's "Smile" with dense harmonic clouds, he properly obliterates that hoary melody. There's another sighing Radiohead treatment, "Everything in its Right Place," and an attempt at enlivening Paul Simon's "Still Crazy (After All These Years)," but it's his happy time with Thelonious Monk's "Skippy" that tells us his best may be yet to come. --Lloyd Sachs

Good old Brad Mehldau has once again shown that he can take any pleasant little tune and turn it into something ugly enough to have made Alban Berg wince. This is the kind of stuff that poseurs love to intellectualize about but no one actually wants to listen to. If Bill Evans had been immature, ignorant and narcissistic he would have been Brad Mehldau. Don't waste your money.

the mellowest of mehldaus.......2007-01-09

I have little to add to the preceding jubilations, except that this is the Mehldau album you want to put on when it's late at night and you've got your girlfriend curled up next to you on the sofa. Never mind if it's just an imaginary girlfriend - a magical time is guaranteed.

Seriously, though, Mehldau's touch is uncharacteristically light on this album. Subdued even. And that, in my opinion, is exactly where the adventure lies. If these renditions sound a bit too faithful, too clean, give them another listen. Each and every track is an exercise in mellowing-down the original to the point where it yields up unsuspected qualities, acquires a completely new feel. Has Skippy ever sounded so gentle? Where is the angst in Everything in Its Right Place? How could Smile suddenly sound peaceful in stead of melancholy?

Sure, taking a tune in turning it into an entirely new piece of music, that's what jazz is all about. But doing it without drama, without being overly deconstructive, that's the mark of GREAT jazz. On this disc, Mehldau pulls it off by sounding unadventurous. The man is a true alchemist.

Mehldau does not disappoint.......2005-07-17

An album full of well crafted mid-tempo ballads that does not disappoint. It has both traditional jazz tunes (nearness of you, dreamsville, get happy) and more contemporary tunes (Still Crazy, Everything in its right place) yet the songs all seem to all fit nicely together. This is the only Mehldau album i have right now but after hearing this I am definitely getting Live in Tokyo and his Art of the Trio recordings. Awesome.

Everything in Its Right Place .......2005-03-11

Brad Mehldau. either alone, with diferent music guests , or with his inseparable trio, his "trio progression" is capable to offer amazing recordings, improvisation, excitement, enthusiasm, passion and refinement are the basic ingredients of every Mehldau s piece of work, the reason i wrote "Everything in Its Right Place" as a tittle for this review is because this track is for me a new classic in Mehldaus cataloge , along with "trailer park ghost" from Elegiac cycle, "Los Angeles" from places and "dusty mcnugget" from Largo this is a very progressive piece with a stuning bass intro, this song begin with a calm rithm , drum section starts to grow up step by step untill a climax of improvisation and "soft madness" take over the finnal minutes of this amazing track, its totally enjoyable, "get happy" is the perfec begining, it seems like this song didnt had many rehearsals before it was recorded and this is great because it sounds with a lot of spontaneity like the perfect begin for an intimate and closed concert, "Dreamsville" and the self tittled "Anything Goes" show this same emotion. another masterpiece in Brad Mehldau s collection

Great album.......2005-02-22

First of all let me just say as a veteran multi-instrumental musician, that this rythym section is EXCELLENT. Rossy is a bad mother on drums and he and Grenadier have ways of turning the bar unlike anyone I've heard in ages. They have a unique feel that is original and unpredictable...and then you have Mehldau too!!! What a trio.

Absolutely love this album. The chord work is haunting, the arrangements are very ambitious, and the piano (as always with mehldau) sounds like it comes truly from the heart. My personal favorites are the title track, Still Crazy (beautiful), the Radiohead cover (really picks up steam), and Smile (VERY ambitious arrangement.)

If you like Brad, you'll like this album. It has the great TRIO with the quality of studio sound. I still prefer Largo for the ballsy experimenting and think that it's gotten a very bad rap from the purists, but this is a close second for Mehldau studio albums.

Alot of jazz-philes keep whining about Brad doing Radiohead covers and other pop tunes. This is the big problem with jazz music. Many fans are music-snobs and want every jazz musician to stay away from any rock or pop influence, and keep themselves squarely confined inside the box of standard jazz. I think it's great that Brad acknowledges his love of rock, especially with such an innovative band as Radiohead. I wish more jazz musicians would realize that there is a world of quality music to draw inspiration from outside of the "standards."

Definitely get this album.

Not bad, but not great.......2007-04-10

The 25 tracks on this CD have exactly one thing that binds them together: all the songs were written (both words and music) by Cole Porter. Some of the singers doing the songs were very well-known artists, others were obscure ones I never heard of. Most of the songs have become standards, but a couple are quite obscure. Most of the recordings were made in the 1950s, but not quite all of them. Most are taken from albums, but at least one is shown as "previously unreleased" on the liner notes. And the styles range from quite jazzy to almost operatic. So this is a very mixed bag.

It should be noted that some of the artists (such as Tony Bennett and Dinah Shore) are represented with recordings made after their primes, as they are best known in work for other record companies, and only recordings for Capitol (or other companies that Capitol took over) are included.

But although there is a variation in all these factors, most, perhaps all, sounded decent to me. Not great, but certainly good.

Disappointed.......2006-11-05

After seeing the motion picture "De-Lovely" and reading several Cole Porter bio's, I eagerly anticipated listening to "Capitol Sings Cole Porter: Anything Goes". Although the Capitol CD contains many more selections by competent, well known artists, I much prefer listening to the CD from the soundtrack of the movie. The "Capitol Sings..." arrangements are slick, but to my ear the De-Lovely arrangements are more wonderfully crafted and have a much more sensuous, emotional quality, even when sung by non-singers Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd. Diana Krall's interpretation of "Begin the Beguine", along with the gorgeous minor key accompaniment, is worth the ownership of the CD alone. I find it to be nothing less than thrilling, no matter how often one listens. I gave my "Capitol Sings..." CD away.

A disappointing "Greatest".......2006-03-20

This sterling line-up of songs by the witty tunesmith Cole Porter, as interpreted by some of the 20th-century's greatest singer/performers - Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, etc. - is surprisingly dull. Very little information accompanies the CD, and I suspect many of the numbers were recorded in mono, which might account for the weak stereo sound "enhanced" by digital technology.

Or maybe Capital was forcing the singers to complete contracts. I found the recently released soundtrack for Delovely, a bad bio-pic about Porter, far more enjoyable and it features a cast of some of the best singers of the early 21st century.

Romantic, rhythmic, sophisicated and incredibly brilliant are the classic works of 20th Century legendary composer Cole Porter who is represented here by an impressive array of Capitol recordings artists. The smooth sophisicated swing of "All Of You" kick off a program of greatly diverse and fascinating performances and always true to her legendary fashion is a superb Peggy Lee while Tony Bennett does a stunning "Anything Goes" with Count Basie. "I Happen To Like New York" smolders and soars with the haunting intensity of a soulful Judy Garland vocal that is a truly stunning masterpiece!!! A mesmerizing Nancy Wilson vocal make "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" a memorable listening experience and this collection is a keeper for those who love the finest songs and singers that music has to offer. Smooth "Anything".......2007-01-31

I currently own the 1988 Studio recording and this recording of Anything goes. While they are two different musicals (1988's Cast does the "original" Anything Goes, and this CD is the revamped version) this CD is more enjoyable than the other. Mainly because all the voices are smoother, and nicer to the ear. Both CDs have tracks that the other does not, but the story lines are pretty similar. The 1988 recording seems to have a much bigger ensemble feel to it, with huge company numbers, while this one has many more character ballads. Of course I would suggest getting both, but if you had to choose one, I would pick this one. I would suggest this for people who like Broadway, but aren't brand new to it. Its not too old, nor too new, so its just right. Favorite Song: "Anything Goes"

Classic Broadway Style.......2005-10-11

Unfortunately no audio files exist from the 1934 broadway debut of this play so this is as close as you can get. Very enjoyable and true to the original play. A necessary addition for any Cole Porter fan.

Brilliant and flawless casting.......2005-01-27

Eileen Rodgers absolutely OWNS Reno Sweeney in this 1962 Off-Broadway revival, boasting a sexy and smoky voice that comes across as natural, sounding like a woman who's had her share of cigarettes, smokes, and men and lives to tell about it. Her rousing renditions of "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Anything Goes" are sheer joy and transport the listener to a cabaret lounge in Manhattan. The production is thankfully simple, with bare-bones orchestration, making it very different from jazzy and polished recording from the 1988 Patti Lupone revival (which is equally brilliant in its own right).

Porter at his best!.......2004-06-30

Many people consider Kiss Me Kate(1948) to be Cole Porter's greatest musical, but in my opinion this piece, written 14 years before in 1934 and as such from a period in musical theater that has not turned out as many enduring hits as the decades that follow, is far superior, as it contains many more hit songs and is genuinly funny when seen on the stage. Indeed, this is one of the few musicals i know where the script could stand on its own and where the songs only serve to enhance the overall effect. I find it hard to believe that anything that has delighted audiences countless times in the years since its original opening, through many successful revivals and amateur productions could ever have been anything less then the result of long meticulous labour; it is mind boggling to think that it was in fact put together at short notice out of a completely different idea about a ship wreck. The original production must have been wonderful; I mean can you think of anyone who seems more suited to the part of Reno Sweeney than Ethel Merman. Yes, Eileen Rodgers. I have not had the privalige of hearing the 1987 recording so I cannot judge Patti LuPone's performance, but I can safely say to any prospetive buyer that the cast of this recording are of such a superior quality that one can overlook the fact that several of the songs have been ommited and others have been put in their place. The wonderful, Portery feel of the piece is not lost, as all the new additions are classic examples of his style that suit the piece perfectly. I simply cannot imagine Anything Goes without It's Delovely, Friendship and Take Me Back To Manhattan, and what would there be for the classic character of Bonnie if Heaven Hop and Let's Step Out were omitted? I love all the songs on this recording,(especially Blow, Gabriel, Blow and the title song) but my all time favorite has to be You're The Top. I believe I heard it at least 15 times in the week after I got the CD. Eileen Rodgers is of course wonderful, and I have a sneaking suspition that Hal Linden may have talent! Oh come on just buy it, it's glorious!

Anything Goes is so fun!!!.......2004-04-24

Hello! I would just like to take a moment to point out that Anything Goes is a great musical! My friends from Chittenango High School just did it for their spring musical and they were awesome! Sam, Chris, and Jiggs, you guys were awesome! So, I bought them this CD as a gift for doing such a great job. I also bought myself one too. And I have to tell you, I have listened to it everyday since I bought it. It really is that good. At first you might think that some of the main character's voices are annoying (like Bonnie and Moon) but they really grow on you after awhile. I have really come to love this CD and now I'll always think of how much fun it was to see my friends put on their version. And they will always have something to remember how much fun it was to do. So, I recommend this CD to anyone who likes Anything Goes or similar musicals and, if you haven't seen the show find out how you can see it because its just great. Its extremely funny. And I'm giving one last shout out to my Nango pals...you guys were the best! Chris...wonderful job playing Moonface Martin. Sam...the best singing and dancing I've ever seen. Love you to death! Jiggs...like I have told you, no one will ever play the bum better than you. Love you guys! I hope this was helpful and fun to read.
