Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Leave it to the French to show their cosmopolitan side with this wide-ranging double CD that often resembles a whirlwind package tour of Paris. The first disc contains everything from a Francophone version of the pop bolero "What Now My Love" to a jazz medley of children's songs including "Frère Jacques" and "Alouette." The Paris of movie soundtracks flickers to life as a chanteuse huskily emotes "L'Amour des Poètes" or nostalgically evokes "Moulin Rouge," while a melancholy brass section introduces Cole Porter's "I Love Paris." Disc 2 moves us into the historic district as a spritely accordion combo makes a less extravagant and downright pleasing presentation of the Gallic soul. "La Valse des As" is an especially impressive demonstration of the accordionist's art with lightning fingerwork that tickles away the cobwebs. All in all, it's a spectacularly fun, occasionally chuckle-inducing collection well worth the ridiculously low price. --Bob Tarte

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Bland, poorly performed French "classics".......2007-04-07

I purchased several CDs to use as ambient music for a French play. This was, by far, the biggest disappointment. Non-descript performances, dull arrangements, this is like Parisien elevator music. There are the obligatory accordian instrumentals, some of which are poorly performed. The vocals, all uncredited, try to approximate the feel of the originals, but come up short every time. No Edith Piaf here! If you're looking for excellent performances and good recordings, I recommend "Cafe De Paris" and "Stars of French Music from the 30s and 40s", both double CD sets with songs performed by talents like Chevalier, Piaf, Yves Montand, and Josephine Baker. There, you're getting the real thing, and not badly arranged, badly executed Musak.

2 out of 5 stars must be two versions of this cd.......2004-03-21

I bought this cd after listening to the samples on Amazon and found that that they are not the same recordings and was disappointed and will be contacting the manufactor of these cds

1 out of 5 stars All The Best From France.......2000-07-20

This CD is Just the worst I ever had. Nothing original. Nothing "The Best". What a dissapoiment. What a waist.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Variety of Treasured Artists!.......2000-03-21

I bought this CD a couple of years ago and it's still one of my favorites. There's a great variety of singers and styles of songs to listen to over and over again without getting tired of them. I played it for my hosts on the student exchange program I was on in France and they were surprised I found such a great CD and they all sung along to the classic songs that fill this CD compilation. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to get samples of Edith Piaf and other greats!

1 out of 5 stars Poor cover versions.......2003-01-10

Some of the most popular known French chansons are better known by their famous and fantastic cover versions. "La vie en rose" has seen some beautiful ones - but here I found a collection of the worst covers I've ever heard. "Et maintenant" needs Gilbert Becaud and not a heartless "dub-di-dub-dub ..." I'm just thankful that my copy of this album came from the local library and I didn't spend a dime on it.

    1 out of 5 stars don't be misled!.......2000-02-08

There is no information on the CD about the artistand as near as I can tell none of these tracks feature the artist who made them famous. For example, J'attendrai was sung by Dalida but on this CD it is an instrumental! Buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD for those who love or wish to discover.......2003-11-30

traditional French music, called Musette. I'm French and live in the US. This CD has brought back the memories of the music my grand-parents and parents loved to listen to and, yes, dance to. Musette was very popular (and is still played in France) and people used to go to "le bal Musette" on Saturday nights to not just listen to the music but dance to it as well. It's really fun to listen to this CD! Well done!

1 out of 5 stars It's more like Polka music..........2002-07-26

I bought this CD thinking that it would sound more like french accordion music played at Paris cafes. Unfortunately, it was more like Polka music played for folk dancing....very disappointed.
