Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The material on this incandescent release evokes the Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal's previous acoustic stunners, Djam Leeli and Baayo. Maal's piercingly gorgeous, stratospheric Islamic wailing soars over melodies constructed along austere yet sensuous lines as he sings of Africa's imminent heyday, romantic love, and ancient tales. He interacts with constantly shifting strands of song fashioned by guitarists Mansour Seck (Maal's best friend from childhood, who also sings second voice) and Kante Manfila, plus the nimble-fingered kora, or West African harp, of Kaouding Cissokho. The lead trio ripples and leaps among woodsy balafons (xylophones), rattling and swooping talking drums and sabar percussion, and resonant, gutty plucked strings. The ambiance recalls Maal's legendary small-venue live performances or dusk in a small Fulani village, where musicians who have played together all their lives still surprise each other while everybody else sings along. Seasoned fans and newcomers alike will be challenged, astonished, and delighted. --Christina Roden

SUBLIME SENEGALESE MUSIC!.......2004-06-22
Unquestionably one of the best albums I'll ever have. Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck bring magic to your ears with this accustic CD. I can't get sick of it! I am listening to it right now as you read this review.
Back to the Basics.......2003-06-19
If you wish to speak of African music, you must include Baaba Maal, who is unquestionably one of the vast continent's quintessential musicians. It could be asserted that "Missing You" is Maal's quitessential album. Certainly, anyone wishing to seriously explore world music would do well to buy "Missing You."
Senegalese music has become known for its aggressive fusion with western music (particularly French). Maal explored the fusion genre a bit in "Nomad Soul" but didn't seem entirely comfortable there. With "Missing You" he returns to his roots, his basic sound heard before in albums such as "Baayo," and it is here that he thrives.
"Missing You" reminds us of where Senegalese music (and much of African music) came from. The feel is of a night where friends have gathered after dinner to calmly play together. The production is decidedly low-tech, Maal's distinctive vibratto voice accompanied by kora, guitar, balafones, drums, and several backup singers. The music is always light, airy, and folky - very organic and true.
The possible knock against this album is that the songs start to all sound the same. But then "Missing You" is not meant to excite and impress, its purpose is to connect and reassure and it never disappoints in that. It is excellent after-dinner music. Next time friends are over, put aside the standard American folk fare and put some Baaba Maal in for an extremely pleasant change.
It's good.......2003-03-21
African singer-songwriter Baaba Maal has created, on this cd, music with melodic lines ranging from very mellow to more fun, with vocals that are often plaintive but sometimes also very catchy. There's always a lot going on in this music. It's good.
A new all-time favorite.......2002-11-27
Now moving into a streak of African music, this album is now one of my favorite CDs. So often I hear great music and wonder what culture it is from or who the artist is...well this is one of those CDs...the Aha!, that's what I've been looking for. I feel at ease and happy when I listen to Baaba's music. I plan to buy more of his CDs.
embrace this.......2002-10-14
Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal is one of Africa's greatest singers. Known best in America for his contributions to Passion, Peter Gabriel's groundbreaking score for The Last Temptation of Christ, his blend of Islamic wailing, French singing, and sensual melodies is a treat for the ears. A worthy introduction to life-affirming African world music and yet, not even necessarily his best work (check out Firin' in Fouta from 1994 or Djam Leeli from 1998).

good single .......2004-09-08
The original version is good but the remixes are very dull and poorly done. Her older singles where much better original and remixes but this one is also good but not great.
Officially Missing The Album!!.......2004-01-26
Yo Officially Missing You Is Just A Bomb A## Joint & i cant believe that Tamia's record label would push the album "Still" back about 2 or 3 times but now that itz happened the Album has been changed to "More" & gonna be released in April 2004, but i hope it does come out in April cause i cant wait for this album anymore
Great Single!.......2004-01-24
Unfortunately just like Debrah Cox, Tamia isn't noticed that much on the radio unless the single she has been remixed by a club remixer. But this is definitely one of Tamia's best singles! "Stranger In My House" can not top this one, but "Officially Missing You" comes pretty close. I know Tamia is an RNB singer, but she just has such good club remixes, and that is the only place you can ever see Tamia, that's a shame. But I hope that one day Mrs. Washington will come out with a electronic pop album or something like Dannii Minogue. This single is awesome, the Mike Rizzo remix is the best! I love it! And I love when it comes on in the clubs!
Great song.......2004-01-08
I love Tamia. I think she has a great voice, although she is NOT a Braxton.
This is a great song, and I cannot wait for the new album to come out.
rishi.......2003-12-26
A good song, but the remixes are disappointing. Not as good as stranger in my house or can't got for that. I only hope she makes up for it with her next single.

Brandy makes this song a favorite for me. I love all of her music. Tamia also has a beautiful voice. As always Gladys sounds like a million bucks. And I think Chaka sounds great singing gospel. Brandy puts her heart in this song like she does all of her music.I love the whole song but I think Brandy's part should have been longer!

Let's Celebrate Ravi!.......2007-06-14
In the history of recorded music, few "artists"- if any- have brought the world such a wide variety of material over such a long period of time as Ravi Shankar. He has been with us now, as it were, for over eighty years, and during his 75th year on earth, around 1995/96, this item, a set entitled "Ravi: In Celebration", was released to the public. The purpose was to "show the different aspects of Ravi's music" in the words of the late George Harrison, ex-Beatle, Ravi friend and fan, and among the compilers of the set. I aquired the set sometime later (I came to this man's music a bit later than 1996) and am now here to review it. So... In a word: WOW! Firstly, I don't know of many western artists who have even been honored with a boxed set like this, IF they make it to 75, which seems to be a big if these days. Secondly, what a wide array of wonderful material this set presents us with. The catagories are split for ways (in accordance with the number of discs) as follows: Disc 1- Classical Sitar, Disc 2- Orchestral and Ensembles, Disc 3- East-West collaborations, and Disc 4- Vocal and Experimental. Currently discs 1 and 4 are my favorites, but I will give an overview of each, as briefly as possible. Disc 1: This is probably the CD that will sound most like the Ravi Shankar you've heard before, especially if you've bought any other Shankar CDs. It consists of 5, ragas (that is, traditional India pieces; I don't really know any technical info here), each of lengthy duration, for the westerner anyhow. Each is enjoyable in its own uinque way: the first two have an exhilerating, playful atmosphere about them (especially the first, Charu Keshi), while the third is an interesting, if simple, piece composed by Ravi by his daughter, who plays sitar on it, the remainder is fairly enjoyable, great ragas really, although for those unprepared, track four is an evening raga, and is VERY slow for the most part, it is still enjoyable if, and only if, you really take the time to sit down and listen. 5/5 for disc 1. Disc 2: I know I've already said that disc 1 will be most like the Ravi you've heard, but if, on the other hand Arpan is all you've heard before coming to this compilation, these tracks will sound more familiar. All the orchestral tracks, the first two for me especially, are enjoyable and fiarly vibrant and varient, sonically. Overall highlights here include: V 7 1/2, and a track played entirley by an ensemble of Ravi and his sitar students. A solid 4.5/5 for this disc, not the strongest around. Disc Three: Here we beging the spectacular East-West collaborations. Starting off with a violin/sitar duet, and carrying through several movements of Ravi's various Sitar Concertos, an even stopping for an incredible live track, Indo-Japan Finale, this disc never seems to let up. These are just awe-enspiring collaborations. Highlights include: Sitar and Violin Duet, the second and third movements from Ravi's Sitar Concerto number one, as well as the afformentioned Indo-Japan Finale. Also of note is a beatiful track called Morning Love, in which Ravi duets with a classical flutist. 5/5
Disc 4: OK. First off, I've read some reviews here, claiming that this disc often sounds "dated and contrived". Well, I'm here to tell you that its neither. This disc is a favorite of mine, and unless you fall into the catagory of "Hindustani Purist", or easly see things as dated or the like, there is no reason not to open your mind to this disc. For starters, Friar Park is an absolutley GORGEOUS track recorded at George Harrison's mansion; behold how autoharp, sitar, and marimba mix, soncially. Then I suggest a huge favorite of mine, the funky West East Meat (what a title!) In it Ravi, and a few other Indian musicians basically jam with jazz bassist and the result is fun, and oftne weird (lookout for Ravi's utterances of random fraises in Bengali.) Fire Night is brilliant piece sure to win over jazz lovers, and Dispute and Violence, another hug favorite, starts off with unaccompanied vocals but quickly evolves into catch piece with with a brilliant hook. Tracks like Tana Mana are relaxing, in an almost hypnotic way, while the vocal offering, I am Missing You, sung in English by Ravi's sister-in-law, Lakshmi, is gorgeous in different sort of way than the other tracks: lyrically it emulates emotion and innocence and, despite arguable over-prodcution, still comes across as something fresh and different. In short, the open-minded will appreciate it most.Other material on this disc, such as the vocal offerings many of which have beautiful lyrical interpretations, will grow on you. 5/5 for disc 4, easily.
Finally, the sound qaulity is very good (except for a track or two where Gramaphone Company of India, Ltd, seems to have preserved material poorly), the mixes, and instruments crystal clear (you can really hear those tablas), and there is a booklet sewn into the package, so you won't be loosing it easily. The booklet offers a biography of Ravi, photos, and info on all the tracks, including Ravi's own notes, from which I draw much of the information for this review, and more. Also, lookout for George Harrison's brief introduction, which I quoted during this review. Overall, a wonderful music, wonderful sound, wonderful booklet= wonderful package. 5/5- A+. Let's celebrate Ravi!
Good Overview Ravi Shankar's Career.......2001-08-10
This box set is a good overview of Ravi Shankar's career. The classical Cd is especially good. Perhaps the set should have been at least 6 cd's with the additional discs being pure classical since R.S does constantly insists he is a purely classical musician.
I find parts of the East-West and Vocal and Experimentation disc to be dated and contrived ,not too interesting after a few listenings and as a result I rarely play these discs.
Listening to this set will enhance your appreciation for Indian classical music and for Pandit Ravi Shankar.
The accompanying booklet is quite nice , although I would suggest R. Shankars book Raga-Mala. I also think that the current remastered Angel CD 's are a good value. For those looking for good overview of Hindustani music check out the Raga Guide: Survey 74 Hindustani Ragas .
captivating.......1999-08-05
It's true, the quality of the music varies greatly from disc to disc and sometimes from track to track, but that's a concomitant of the fun, part of the exploring. My favorite piece is the Yehudi Menuhin collaboration. (Mr. Menuhin reveals in his autobiography he never learned to improvise, but you couldn't tell it by this: he plays with conviction and spontaneity.) The "classical" disc is consistently good; the movements for sitar and orchestra are fascinating; the pop song "I Am Missing You" is amusing. The set is attractively packaged and includes a lengthy biography of Ravi Shankar with historically significant photographs.
Also recommended (for sitar players too): PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.
good mix of stuff, but NOT AT ALL for Hindustani purists.......1999-05-28
Initially this set was the jewel of my Hindustani collection, but overtime, some of the experimental music gets tiresome (especially disc 4) The classical sitar CD is excellent and shows Pandit Shankar in his prime with the masterful accompaniment of tabla player, Ustad Alla Rakha. The ensemble disc is really nice too, getting to experiment with the likes of south Indian players like violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam. The east/west disc is exhilarating at first, but the more familiar one becomes with the music, the sillier some of these collaborations seem. OFten what happens with the east meets west things is that one of the musicians leads with the other following/immitating (often blindly and lost). I do want to emphasize though, that the easterner is not always the leader or the one with superior understanding of how to collaborate. Anyway, this set serves well to introduce people to north Indian classical music, but some of it is too fabricated to stand the test of time. For pure sitar playing, I would suggest Nikhil Banerjee's "raga S.KHamaj/Manomanjari" double disc on the Raga label.
This record shows that Ravi Shankar is a genius!.......1999-02-25
All the records that I heard of Ravi Shankar's performances are masterpieces. Thanks to Ravi Shankar, I learned that good music does not mean only Western music.

Simply, she's one of the best sopranos I've ever heard!.......2004-10-03
First of all, my review is not about this particular album. The previous reviewer compared her to Sumi Jo. If Hong should have a lesson on how to sing Korean songs from Jo, then Jo should learn how to act on the stage from Hong. I'm a Korean myself and I have almost all recordings of Ms. Jo including my favorites of her recordings, "Carnaval" and "Ariadene Aux Naxos." I also went to operas and heard both great singers on stage. I'm not an opera expert..but as an opera lover, I truely think Ms. Jo has technical perfection. However, that's not enough for singing an opera. Ms. Jo can sing beautifully in recordings but on the stage, her voice is not big enough and her acting is weak. I'm not talking about physical expression. but vocal expression. Ms. Jo is a Great coloratura soprano but I don't think she's a Great opera singer. I still remember Kei-kyung Hong in Turandot. I don't understand Italian and I didn't even have to read translations because my heart already understood every word she sings.
I am enraptured.......2004-08-31
I listened to this because I am studying Korean, and I have been listening to anything Korean that I can get my hands on.
On my first listening I was not too impressed. But subsequent listenings have left an indelible impression of incredible beauty that grows and grows with every return.
I have only one complaint. The CD includes translations of these traditional Korean songs in English, German, and French, but without either the Korean or a transliteration.
Beautiful music oversung.......2003-10-27
I would actually give this about 3 and a half stars if that were an option. I enjoyed Hei-Kyung Hong's recital disc from 1998 immensely, and I've seen her live and she is amazing. However, on this disc of traditional Korean songs she seems to be over-singing. Her vibrato is uncontrolled and sometimes she actually sounds like a parody of an opera singer. Which is unfortunate, because her voice is gorgeous and if she had held back a little bit this album could have been amazingly beautiful.
Korean coloratura Sumi Jo is a singer who understands that you must change the way you sing when you sing different styles of music. Perhaps she could have given Ms. Hong lessons on how to sing this type of material, as she released a couple of similar albums several years ago. She still sings them "correctly," that is to say, operatically, but her vibrato doesn't get in the way and she doesn't try to sound bigger than she is. Her CD's are difficult to find, but if you can, I highly recommend them over this version.
Beautiful Korean Art Songs.......2003-10-08
Considering the status of Korean Music in the classica field, it is very understandable that this CD didn't get much publicity from media like Bartoli or Fleming's new CDs.
However, in my opinion, this CD deserves some attention.
Because it has beautiful art songs from Korea. You will find something new from this CD. It can be said something Oriental flavor from some songs like "mt Paek du"
or "New Aririang". But, generally, I don't think you can tell much difference of it from the European operatic art songs especailly if you are not familiar with the language.
So I have to say this CD is worthy for listening to because it is so beautiful and moving.
My favorites are "Mt Pake-du(reminds of a piece of dramatic opera aria), "Missing You", "I want to go home", "my heart",
"Boat sailing away", "Dongshimcho".
For me, these songs are quite familiar since I have CDs by
Sumi jo and Youngok Shin for same songs.
Unlike Jo or Shin's, Hong's interpretations for songs are quite
dramatic and expressive. In terms of who was the best, I guess,it depends on songs.
For instance like "Barley field", Jo has more suitable voice.
Shin has her own merit as well for her soothing and vulnerable voice.
Anyhow, Hong did express her own color on each songs.
I loved this CD more aftering listening several times since her voice was too dramatic for some songs(needed time to get used to it).
For Marketing aspect for EMI, I am not sure if this was good decision to release Korean songs for first project by EMI for Hong(in my opinon, neither Hong or Korean art song doesnot have big name recognition in the market except New York area and Korea). She might have released more safe well-known opera arias.
Anyhow,I hope you could enjoy these songs as much as I enjoyed.

Case sings!!.......2001-06-17
No, it's not a remake of the song:
"Missing You" by Diana Ross
and it's not a remake of:
"Missing You" by John Waite
It is an original song! . . .and it's BEAUTIFUL!!
Went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart,
and to #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart!
"Missing You" by CASE appears in the movie The Nutty Professor II, and is on the soundtrack and on his new CD "Open Letter".
Like R&B Without Stevie..........2001-04-21
"Missing You" is not only better than "Touch Me, Tease Me" and "Happily Ever After," it's one of the best songs of the year. Case has outdone himself this time around. The beat is off the chain, and towards the end, you almost expect Case to break out with an "ooh, wee" or "ooh, yeah", or some kind of K-Ci Hailey ad-lib. I actually do that myself when I hear it on the radio (lol). Was I the only one who entertained that thought in their head? Anyway, I just had one problem with the hook though. When he says "like a cold summer afternoon", he follows it up with "like the snow coming out in June". I just thought those two analogies were too similar, 'tis all. But this is a great song by a great up 'n comin' artist.
his best material.......2001-04-19
this is the best song that case ever did even better then "happily ever after" from his gold certified personal conversation and the foxy brown featured "touch me tease me" from his also gold certified self-titled debut album.
not only is the track amazing in its own right, its amazing how fast its climbing the charts. it climbed from #37 on billboard's hot 100 singles (from all geners of music) to #5 in one week! it was the greatest gainer in sales/airplay and it deserves it. the remix is even better then the original. cop this single
Nice R&B song.......2001-04-18

Customer Reviews:
A great Chicago jazz artist........1999-06-18
I saw Henry Johnson live in Chicago years ago and went out the next day to look for his albums. This one is among my favorites with a really nice mix of beautiful melodies and catchy tunes, mixing a contemporary sound with classical jazz influences. Devoid of the usually vapid "new age" genre sound, this is terrific album from one of the most underappreciated jazz artists alive today.
