No matter the origins, choral music can connect on the most basic of levels. Perhaps that's because we all share the instrument of voice; or perhaps it's the religious traditions that many of us grew up with. The Corsican a capella nonet I Muvrini hit listeners with rich polyphonic melodies and harmonies that gracefully spiral upwards, resonating together in a way that needs little translation. Like a hip church choir from the 16th century with a Middle Eastern influence, the men's group covers the sacred and the secular on Pulifunie (which translates as polyphony)--the group is at its best on the vocal-only traditionals, but two of the three originals have ambient accompaniment that works pretty well. A far cry from the ominous-sounding Gregorian chant, the music on the group's second effort for Higher Octave is as weird and wonderful as the first, possessing the same kind of ancient-but-modern beauty as Enya, Sheila Chandra, or Lisa Gerrard. --Tad Hendrickson

Their polyphonic harmonies take the Corsican vocal form and make it into an art form ~ unique is the sound of I Muvrini with a latest release "Pulifunie", offer powerful moments within a realm of nine voices. Performed a cappella sharing a soulful haunting harmonic voice of freedom. We hear exceptional voices of Alain and Jean-Francois Bernardini spreading love and respect for you the listener and fans ~ deeply attached to their roots brings the revival of Corsican music.

So enjoy the entire album, slow-moving voices drift over melodies like a breeze over clouds in the sky ~ you feel every note and phrasing. Wonderful second album from Higher Octave ~ this will be in my collection now and years to come.

This appealing song collection from the Lusafrica label showcases African music with a European emphasis from its roster of Cape Verdean artists. Teofilo Chantre sets the tone of sweet regret with the wistful, accordion-ornamented "Roda Tempo," whose Portuguese roots recall a sadder take on Brazilian samba. Island multi-instrumentalist Bau wields a signal-processed violin on "Ronco Di Mar" shaped by mournful, near-vocal timbres that pave the way for world-beat diva Cesaria Evora's "Primero de Malo." Boy Ge Mendes' "Pampario" maintains the midnight listening mood with his understated showstopper of a voice backed by sinuous Cameroonian electric guitar reminiscent of the playing on Paul Simon's The Rhythm of the Saints CD. Also on board are Cuban performers whose smooth styles complement the Cape Verdeans, including Orquesta Aragon with the trademark violin and flute charanga the band perfected in the 1940s, Septeto Habenero with a bright take on the Cuban son its been honing since the 1920s, and a bouncy tune from Leyanis Lopez. I Muvrini is led by two brothers from Corsica, a tiny island off the French Mediterranean coast. Alain and Jean Francois Bernardini sensitively mirror both the music and culture of their native Corsica. Musically, they meld modern influences with traditional instruments like the citora (a 16-stringed Corsican instrument), hurdy-gurdy, and bagpipes, as well as guitar, keyboards, and drums. Their evocative voices soar and glide as they articulate the emotions and politics of their people in the Mediterraneans. The music builds steadily in contemporary fashion while the brothers Bernardini sing with elegance and poignancy. The spirit of this "world music" comes through loud and clear, making yet another strong case for remembering music as our universal dialect. Beautiful. --Mitch Myers

Marvelous, haunting compositions.......2001-08-18

"À Bercy" was the first Corsican CD I ever listened to, and was a great introduction to the polyphonic Corsican style. I Muvrini manages to convey a rare depth of emotion in almost every single track. The songs alternate between merry, sing-along tunes and powerful, slow, haunting melodies that transport you to the rocky streams of the Corsican countryside.

The mood of the CD is set by the first two tracks: the first one, "Ne fermez pas la porte" is a poem in French, accompanied by music, that speaks in strong terms of the Corsicans' aspiration for freedom. The second track, by contrast, is fast and extravagant, joyously sung in Corsican. While the CD alternates between these two moods, all the other tracks contain songs, almost all of them in Corsican.

The only thing that does not fit in with the rest of the album are the song titles: they are mostly listed in English and French in an album that seeks to assert a Corsican identity. Apart from this matter of editorial choice, I found the album to be thoroughly refreshing and highly enjoyable.

Intelligent classical "pops" for lighter moods........2000-11-08

The "Light Music Classics" series on Hyperion, one of the highest-quality classical music labels around, has been a very pleasant surprise for me. Let's face it: some days you're just not up to the challenge of listening to Beethoven or Bruckner -- you're just looking for some light, fun, but intelligent music to enrich your day. That's where this excellent and highly popular series comes in.

Twenty compositions are featured on Vol. 3, written by various British masters of light orchestral music including Eric Coates, Ernest Tomlinson, and Haydn Wood. All of the pieces are six minutes or under; all are skillfully composed and well-played by Ronald Corp and his orchestra, who know how to give this undemanding but highly entertaining music just the right touch -- not too heavy, not too frivolous. Plus, the disc is quite generously filled at 78 minutes and change.

As usual, most of the pieces have tunes you'll be humming after you first hear them -- many have been used as signature pieces on British radio and television shows over the years. While I don't feel this volume has as many winning tunes as Vol. 1 or Vol. 2, it's still highly entertaining and an excellent value. This has turned into one of Hyperion's most popular series and it's not hard to understand why: it fills a niche for intelligent light music.

Look for Volumes 1 and 2, as well as "European Light Music Classics" and "American Light Music Classics" -- all on the same label and just as excellently played by the same conductor and orchestra.
