Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the first of GbV's great records.......2006-07-23

somehow robert pollard believed. no one else did. this little plaything could do something special. it not so much redefined the music scene as exposed it to what it had always been. not quite the classic album some would make it out to be, it is, though, a thoroughly terrific record, completely unexpected and paved the way for what would come. better than vampire on titus, but in no way as good as bee thousand or alien lanes.

4 out of 5 stars An Album with Hundreds of Different CD Covers, and an Infinite Amount of Creativity.......2006-06-02

My CD contains 'Propeller and "Vampire on Titus'' on one disk (only available for a short while; now they must be purchased separately), although I doubt that very many people would be particularly envious of this `coup'. Actually, its advantages are questionable, because the two albums combine for a total of 33 (!) tracks, which is overwhelming by anybody's standard and makes it doubly difficult to allow the songs to sink in.
Therein lies the basic premise of Guided By Voices, and the inherent problem with appreciating their music. Sometimes I get the feeling that I spend more time learning to appreciate it than they spend writing and rehearsing it. "Vampire on Titus" (the first 18 songs on my disk) is particularly guilty of this self-indulgence. Its low-fi aesthetic hardly ever lets up, and after five listens, I'm still waiting for the songs to gel into recognizable melodies.
"Propeller" (the second half of my disk, consisting of the remaining 15 tracks) is the superior disk of these two, consisting of a bizarre combination of extraordinary ambition and complete indifference. It opens with a self-reducing anthemic overture that sounds as though it could be inserted into a rock opera of some sort, and then quickly degenerates into the spastic, pointless incoherence of a song called (appropriately) "Particular Damaged." This particular damage is difficult to overcome, but the fragmented melodies of "Metal Mothers" (more `rock-star' fodder) and "14 Cheerleader Coldfront" leave you wondering if you might be missing something. You are. This album Is a Monster, and may be the single most important reason that Guided By Voices experienced such longevity. Flashes of brilliance abound everywhere, but it may take a new listener some time to sort this out.
Typically idiosyncratic arrangements clutter this disk, but the inherent charm (as I see it) of the band's work methods somehow manage to keep me guessing as to their intentions. Are they self-consciously ambitious or do they lack enthusiasm? A song called "Lethargy" displays this dichotomy perfectly, verbalizing the latter, while displaying elements of the former. It's a lot of effort for all of this stuff to sink in, but it does pay off. A - Tom Ryan

5 out of 5 stars Essential...It's all essential.......2005-06-20

All good kids must have this record. Simply the best of the GBV catalog, but Bee Thousand is the best place to start. You should buy them both, along with Alien Lanes and Under the Bushes and call it a summer. You will not need any other CDs because to appreciate the full range of value you will have to listen to them incessantly for at least 2-3 months. Best of luck finding the right type of work to allow for the listening and record buying you will need. At least the touring might slow now that Bob is solo, but probably not since I fear he has quit smoking.

4 out of 5 stars Low production makes for some Interesting Music.......2005-01-25

This musical effort by Guided by Voices is another very good album that combines raw, low production sound with 1960's style rock and a few dashes of metal here and there to create a unique sound. The music on this album is varied, with some songs performed with nothing but acoustic guitar, some with electric guitar power chords, some short, some long, etc.

The best songs on this collection would include "On the Tundra", "Weedking", and "Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox". On many of the songs, lead singer Bob Pollard's vocals have an English sound to them- something Pollard is known for from time to time. The British accent, combined with the 1960's rock and roll sound of some songs, makes tunes like "On the Tundra" and others sound like British invasion hits from thirty years ago.

Much of the music on Propeller is much like that on "Alien Lanes", both in production and in musical style and sound. I like "Alien Lanes" a little more than "Propeller", but I agree with most of the reviewers here that "Propeller" is still a very good album and one that belongs in the collection of every Guided by Voices fan.

5 out of 5 stars GBV at their best.......2004-12-06

If you're unfamiliar with Guided By Voices, this isn't a bad place to begin. Propeller is on par with GBV's best output and is a bit more propulsive and energetic than most of their offerings. There are a couple tossers on here, as you might expect, but even those have some sort of quirk that make them oddly compelling. In terms of the sheer quality of song writing, I think Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand have an edge, but I think this is probably GBV's funnest album, and the one that best captures their whimsical arena-rock-god wannabe, half-hearted make-it-up-as-you-go-along, drunken good time spirit. It's certainly one of the essentials for GBV fans along with Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Isolation Drills.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The vinyl version is better.......2006-02-19

This is the film version, and it is inferior to the original album release. Often times, soundtrack releases differed from their film versions because composers could tweak passages here and there and get a relaxex, dedicated recording, away from the harsh deadlines of film making. The result was often glorious, as was the case for Jerry Goldsmith's Patton.

Add the famous George C. Scott speeches as prologue and epilogue and you have a classic. But only on vinyl. The vinyl version has better audio quality and is a better performance. It is a shame we are stuck with this dubbed version, which ironically is available on the Patton DVD as well.

4 out of 5 stars Do some research!.......2006-01-14

This is a great CD for collectors. This is the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK to the film. These arrangements are the ones that were ACTUALLY USED in the film, NOT the ones that were on the album with the speeches. So, if you are looking for the opening and closing speeches, you won't find them here.
Why?
Because there are actually THREE different versions of the score for this FANTASTIC film.
There was another version conducted by Jerry Goldsmith in 1997.
And.... there was ANOTHER one that was recorded in 1970. THAT is the one with the speeches. As far as I know, it has NEVER been released on CD. Hopefully, at some point, someone will see fit to release that version. Personally, I feel those are the best arrangements of the music used in the film. Or, better yet, make a special edition using all 3 versions.
So, you should be HAPPY to have THIS version as well.
By the way, I believe this info is in the liner notes of this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Missed oportunity!.......2006-01-06

While I can appreciate that this release is a very competent recreation of the musical content of the original vinyl, I too was totally dismayed at the absence of Patton's speeches(as delivered by George C Scott) which are virtually inseparable from the music for anyone who owned the original vinyl release. All of which subsequently leaves this release a rather hollow experience.

5 out of 5 stars Two classic scores!.......2005-11-22

This cd includes Frank DeVol's score for the Robert Aldrich classic, "Flight of the Phoenix"; an exciting score for an equally exciting movie. Goldsmith's justifiably famous score for Patton features the original recordings, including the haunting "echoplexed" trumpets. Also, the previous reviewer's one-star rating is rather inexplicable considering this is FILM SCORE release. Why would soundbites from the film be included? Bizarre. All-in-all a great package and a limited edition (only 3,000 copies). Get yours while you can - you won't be disappointed!

1 out of 5 stars Missing the Best .......2005-06-25

This album does not have Patton's opening speech or the closing "All Glory is Fleeting" speech. It misses the two most important segments of the original soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Sizzling Freshman Set.......2004-10-08

Peter Stuart's freshman set sizzles on "Propeller." As the veteran of 2 CDs with Dog's Eye View, Stuart had experience that was augmented when he went solo opening for Live, Counting Crows & Paula Cole. His songs have also been recorded by Bon Jovi & Go-Go's. "Take Me Back" is a peppy driving midtempo rocker that sounds like a radio song. "Propeller Girl" has an unusual lyric about the girl that spins him around. Stuart's vocals are expressive and aching on the ballad "Innocence," "There's a preacher on the corner, I just walk away, he's throwing grace all around the place, am I too far gone to say I think I had good intentions." "Vertigo" mixed by Tom Lord Alge is a sweet midtempo track with crisp drums, "I will let you take me into thin air, take this fear called love, tell me that you're here & there & there's nothing to be scared of." The ballad "Let's Get Lost" is a great vocal performance with Mark Isham's trumpet giving the track a distinctive flavor. "Songs About You" written with Peter Case is a happy lighthearted track with a silly little chorus that puts a smile on your face. "The Real You" gets a good thumping groove going with an insistent bass line. The CD concludes with a string-laden weeper where Stuart's vocals resemble the trembling emotion of Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket. "Propeller" is an extremely strong set with consistently strong material. This is one you don't want to let slip away. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A "diamond in the rough"- this CD is a true gem.......2004-04-15

I was originally "introduced" to Peter Stuart for two of the songs, "Real You" and "Bring You Back," the former being the title song and the latter during two pivotal emotional scenes, utilized in the movie "All Over The Guy." I wasn't sure how well I would relate Mr. Stuart based on just two songs, but my hopes came true. I like Mr. Stuart's meandering singing style. He stumbles over some words from time to time, which adds to the tapestry of his unique singing style. He creates a wholly different dimension to the emotions he expresses in his songs that vibrantly come through to his listeners like very few other artists.

These eleven songs flow together very evenly as a great ensemble. "Innocence," (which has a religious overtone), "My Heart In Your Hands," and the opening song, "Take Me Back," which just jumps this CD "out of the gate" with a burst of energy, are some my other favorites. This collection of songs sends me on a see-saw of pensive, calming, anxious, and content emotions. As many times as I have listened to this disk since I bought, I have yet to have grown tired of it. If you are one of many people who express frustration with the songs and talent of many contemporary artists, I recommend you give "Propeller" a try. I believe you will find Peter Stuart and these selection of songs to be fresh and satisying.

4 out of 5 stars very cool guy!.......2003-10-23

i didn't even know of Peter until i had the pleasure of hearing him live. i was at a mason jennings/jason mraz concert and Peter Stuart was the opening guy. which is a pity because i liked him a LOT more than jason mraz and mason jennings and it would've been awesome to hear a full set. while peter has that typical single-guy pop sometimes-out-of-tune voice, it's still great and i adore his lyrics. my best friend is obsessed with Dog's Eye View and from what i've heard, i think i like DEV better than Peter solo, but they are somewhat different sounds. i love this guy and i bought his CD right away at the concert i was at. DEFINITELY worth a listen!!!

4 out of 5 stars just good music.......2003-08-14

I love this artist. He's been around for years and I have his all of his known cd's. He is a friend with the vocalist from The Counting Crows. He is very orginal and I love his style of writing and his music. I find it down to earth, refreshing, and just uplifting. I have never heard a song by him that I did not like and did not sit up and take notice. Even on movie soundtracks, from all over the guy, I immediately heard his songs played and knew who the songs were by. He is very original and not that widely known, but he should be.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-06-22

all i have to say is that this cd is amazing!!! awesome rock ting to it!!!! i first heard peter stuart in the movie, "all over the guy." it had the songs "real you" and "bring you back," which i completley fell in love with...rite after the movie, i went and looked up his album and bought it!!!! i have no regrets whatsoever...oh, and yes, it is an awesome driving cd!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars PROPELLER- "Oro".......2000-03-29

Of all of Mark Spybey's projects, Propeller is probably my favorite, and this CD is a big reason why. This is the first CD I suggest to someone just starting to get into Spybey. The music is a bit more developed in an ALMOST conventional, new-agey manner. There is still the use of open space and crowded noise, but with this, the second Propeller CD, there is a less intrusive force at work. Whereas the first Propeller album, "Rame," was akin to something one might find cast amongst the works of Hafler Trio, "Oro" seems more appropriately compared to something like Robin Storey's Rapoon. I know general comparisons like this drive artists crazy, but I'm just trying to help you all make an informed choice!
