Take a dive, take a dive.......2004-04-17

There is a little Caribbean lagoon called Xel-Ha. It is sweet, a little deep, gentle, and full of variety. That is also what Pablo Milanes' voice is like. And as a water fits and conforms anywhere it wants to, somehow Milanes' voice is always perfectly suited to the song at hand. A happy, happy conjunction of taste and talent.

Some of these songs are classic. A Cuban American coworker of mine said, "Pablo who?" I responded: "Dejame despertarte con un beso..." and his face lit up. "My grandmother always sings that one around the house!" That song, from which the album takes its name, begins with a lovely piano refrain and gets really jazzy and tropical, like Gilberto at his best.

"No ha sido facil" has a certain synthesized, 70's flavor that is merely sentimental, not cheesy. But be warned if you hate that kind of thing.

And for "Nicaragua" you must really open your mind. Who would not understand the lyrics about the tragedy of a beautiful country maimed by violence and injustice? But the odd synthesizer rumblings make it sound like "Axel F" colliding with the sound guy with "Dr. Who" bumping heads with poet Ruben Dario. I believe it works, and I know others who are wild for this song. But then, not everybody like chopped liver, either.

If you love nueva trova, old jazzy samba, a perfectly tuned tenor, or snorkeling, you really ought to listen to this album.

It is my most essential Milanes album. And the price! Even if you earn minimum, it's worth it to work an hour for this pearl.
