5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-05-23

I've always loved her music but I had never purchased any of her CD's. This CD had all of my favorites on it and some songs I hadn't heard. I loved every song. If you're looking for a comprehensive CD with "Best of" Bonnie music, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars This is only the "best" since 1989.......2006-09-09

As a long-time lover of Bonnie Raitt, I have no complaints about this "best" package, except a note to those Bonnie "newbies". This collection is a good sampling of her work since she switched to Capital Records in 1989 (although "Come to Me" is a glaring omission). But there is a TON of more great music PRE-1989. Try the "Bonnie Raitt Collection", which is all pre-1989, or try some of the orignal CD's, such as "Sweet Forgiveness".

It doesn't get any better than Bonnie Raitt - pre- or post-1989, but those of you who love this album should check out the earlier work as well.

The aim was to do for country what Saturday Night Fever did for disco. The result was that bars from Kona to Kalamazoo suddenly had mechanical bulls, and slickers walking around in cowboy hats. You might also pinpoint this as the moment in time when "country" music suddenly went cosmopolitan, paving the way for Garth Brooks. Johnny Lee's "Lookin' for Love" was one of the decade's biggest singles, and this album briefly made a star of Mickey Gilley (whose Texas club provided a home for that alpha bull). Fans of Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, and Bonnie Raitt may want this collection for the tunes they lack elsewhere. And it sure recalls an era. But please don't call it "country." --Bill Holdship

3 out of 5 stars Where were the good songs?.......2007-05-21

I love this movie, and I like the songs on this soundtrack, but, there are some songs that were in the movie that realy need to be on the soundtrack, but, they, for some reason left them out. Such as the intro song, "Texas", by Charley Danials. But, overall, it is a good album.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very Good.......2007-02-12

I'm not a country music fan in the least. But I saw this movie at least 3 times and it was superb. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. There are several good artists on this soundtrack like Dan Fogelbert, Bob Seger, Anne Murray, The Eagles, Johnny Lee. Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and a few others. Every song on this ST is excellent. Even if you're not a country music fan like myself, this is one good CD to have in your collection of movie soundtracks.

After almost 35 years of recording, Bonnie Raitt knows exactly who she is and what she wants, as Souls Alike, the first self-produced album of her career, attests. Though Raitt wrote none of the material, the selection bears her imprint and highlights both her strengths and her range. The album's opening "I Will Not Be Broken" provides the sort of signature, stick-to-your-guns affirmation for Raitt that "My Way" did for Frank Sinatra and "I Won't Back Down" did for Tom Petty. Two songs written by pianist Jon Cleary, "Love on One Condition" and "Unnecessary Mercenary," reflect the Little Feat-in-New Orleans side to Raitt's music, while the reggae underpinnings of "God Was in the Water," the electro-worldbeat of "Deep Water," and the slide-guitar funk of "Trinkets" find her settling naturally into a variety of grooves. Though she makes a sharp left turn into the sonic surrealism of "Crooked Crown," she returns to the reflective balladry that has marked her musical maturity with "So Close," "I Don't Want Anything to Change," and the jazzy sophistication of the closing "The Bed I Made." While there are few surprises here, the album ranks with the most soul-satisfying of Raitt's career. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars Good, but I like the OLD Bonnie better!.......2007-03-30

The styling on this CD was unlike any other Bonnie Raitt CD I've ever heard. Takes some getting used to!

4 out of 5 stars Good, excellent in places.......2007-03-22

"Souls Alike" is an interesting and usually fun CD. Sure, it represents a departure from Bonnie's earlier music, but hey - after 35 years I think a new direction can be understood. It's not like she pulled a total switch here - the amazing slide guitar work, bluesy rhythms and of course Bonnie's matchless vocals are all here. To me the biggest differences are the addition of Jon Cleary's brilliant, rollicking keys (Unnecessarily Mercenary and Love on One Condition) and the opening up of several songs into sparser, more groove oriented tracks (the opening track and the three softer ballads). This is a rather disjointed CD, and song to song it tends to throw a few curves, but that's just fine. I don't really like my music too predictable, and songs like "God..." and "Love..." are not predictable - not to mention "Crooked Crown", a dirty groove if ever there was such a thing. This is a solid CD, and really blends several basic styles - blues, straight ahead rock, Cajun swamp music and even a little funk. I really enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Raitt at her best........2007-03-01

SOULS ALIKE is Bonnie Raitt at the top of her game. All the maturity and experience of this talented performer is on display here. Her vocals are the right blend of worldliness and emotion and her guitar playing is just stellar. The songs chosen here are a fine balance of softer ballads like the pretty "So Close," to the quirky "Trinkets" that sounds more like one Sheryl Crow would pick, but Bonnie has fun with it. Even when things get funky on songs like "Crooked Crown" and "Unnecessarily Mercenary," the feeling is not forced; the songs flow along. They don't sound like they were put here just because something upbeat was needed. Even when the sound is very different like on "Deep Water," something that almost sounds like something from Peter Gabriel, she makes it work for her. There really is nothing here that I didn't enjoy and it has proven to be the favorite of my Bonnie Raitt CD's.

3 out of 5 stars A Miss from a Great Artist.......2006-12-25

I've been a great fan of Bonnie from way back, but this album is a bit of a clunker. After I Will Not be Broken it goes downhill with clunky, over-produced MOR track after track. I saw her tour at the Arlington in Santa Barbara and the album songs were much better live. It wouldn't stop me from buying her next album sight unseen; maybe it's just that I have such high expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-08-24

I am astounded that there are Bonnie Raitt fans that don't like this album!` Well, to each his own.. I fell in love with Bonnie Raitt in the early 90's with "Nick of Time,"- then found the older albums to be even better. Forgot about Ms Raitt for awhile-then heard "Unnecessarily Mercenary" on a local college radio station last week . This new CD is just fantastic-great mix of songs. Lyrics on "Trinkets" are cool...Check this out.

When Bonnie Raitt collected four Grammies for her 1989 multiplatinum breakthrough Nick of Time, it offered sweet justification for fans that had followed her through years of great recordings but plenty of hard luck in terms of commercial success. The Bonnie Raitt Collection shows why those fans were right all along. From the early blues-mama stylings of "Give It Up or Let Me Go" and "Love Me Like a Man" to the increased pop sophistication she brought to songs like her funky reworking of Del Shannon's "Runaway" and Bryan Adams's straight-ahead rocker "No Way to Treat a Lady," the set offers a worthwhile sampling of the decade and a half she spent recording for the Warner Bros. label. Of special note are a pair of live recordings; a previously unreleased version of "Women Be Wise," featuring one of Raitt's primary mentors, Sippie Wallace; and a duet with John Prine on "Angel from Montgomery" that first appeared on the Grammy-winning Tribute to Steve Goodman. If you only recently discovered Raitt, this collection will help you decide which of her earlier works to sample next. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First Raitt.......2005-04-09

The problem with "best of" collections is that fans will get into endless squabbles over what SHOULD have been included. Bonnie Raitt fans are no exception apparently. A cursory look at the fan reviews below attests as much. I understand how they feel, but folks, you know it's all good, and you gotta draw the line somewhere. After Raitt's extraordinary late 80s success on Capitol, a Warners retrospective was inevitable. They had lost a good thing in Bonnie and wised up just a little late. But graciously, Bonnie assisted in the selection of the songs and provided commentary. No hard feelings, boys.

A solid, consistent performer who has evolved but never felt compelled to constantly "reinvent" herself, Bonnie Raitt is not an easy artist to sum up, let alone encapsulate in a twenty song retrospective. But a twenty song sampler at least gives the new listener a broad enough overview. Die hard fans will buy it for the "live" versions of staples "Women Be Wise" (sung as a duet with originator Sippie Wallace) and "Angel From Montgomery" (here a duet with composer John Prine).

It's hard to imagine that a newcomer to Bonnie Raitt's oeuvre would want to stop here and not check out the individual releases (all available as of this writing). The earliest records with their rootsy feel have a special charm, as evidenced by the tracks included here: "Finest Lovin' Man" and "Give It Up." But even in those days, Bonnie was demonstrating her flair for contemporary material, as evidenced by her rocking take on Jackson Browne's "Under the Falling Sky." And although the Warners albums also included tracks penned by such staples of the So-Cal rock scene as Joni Mitchell and Stephen Stills, she also had a flair for finding material from less obvious sources. Paul Siebel's "Louise" isn't half bad--in fact, it's darn good. And she captures the essence of Chris Smither's "I Feel the Same" like no one else could (save the songwriter himself). Like her contemporaries, Tracy Nelson and Linda Ronstadt, she was discovering a virtual treasure trove in the works of Eric Kaz. Lots of folks find Bonnie's version of "Love Has No Pride" to be "definitive." I'm learning to throw that word out of my vocabulary, since my tastes can change from day to day. But of all the women--and men--who have assayed that song, Bonnie Raitt was able to bring something unique to it. Hers is a dignified reading, with more than a hint of vulnerability. Nelson's take on it, from the recently re-released eponymous Atlantic album, is also an interesting one, so strong and proud that it virtually belies the song's title. I can't decide which version I prefer, so instead I decided, hey, I don't have to.

Interesting that Bonnie Raitt emerged in '71, a year after Janis Joplin's tragic demise. Like Nelson, Raitt offered an alternate version of the white blues mama. Both brought a little more restraint and discipline to their art. Some found Raitt a little earnest in her politics and in her almost studious approach to the blues. But au contraire, mes amis, Bonnie had class and discipline--and she loved a good liberal cause as much as anyone else--but she was also as sassy and sly as you could want. And she sang like a husky voiced angel from Los Angeles. And played a mean slide guitar to boot.

Who could have asked for more? Eat your hearts out (17 years after the fact), Warners execs!

5 out of 5 stars The early years, 1971 to 1986.......2005-02-21

While Bonnie's later albums, beginning with the Grammy-winning Nick of time, brought Bonnie greater commercial success, her earlier music should not be ignored. This compilation provides a selection of Bonnie's recordings from those early years.

Bonnie's roots are in the blues but she could also sing rock, pop, folk and country when she chose to. You won't find any country music here - you'll have to buy the Urban Cowboy soundtrack to hear Bonnie sing country - but all the other influences are to be found somewhere in this collection.

The tracks are taken from the albums Bonnie Raitt (Finest lovin' man, Women be wise), Give it up (Give it up or let it go, Under the falling sky, Love me like a man, Love has no pride), Taking my time (I feel the same, Guilty), Streetlights (What is success), Home plate (My first night alone without you, Sugar Mama), Sweet forgiveness (Louise, About to make me leave home, Runaway), The glow (The glow, Going wild for you baby), Green light (Willya wontcha) and Nine lives (No way to treat a lady). Angel from Montgomery, which originally appeared on Streetlights, is here as a duet with John Prine, his vocals having been overdubbed specially for this collection.

It is clear from the above that the compiler particularly likes Bonnie's second album, Give it up, as four of its tracks are included here. It's a great album but I think the inclusion of so many tracks might deter a few people from buying it. I would have dropped one and included a second track from Green light (preferably Baby come back) or -even better - one of the tracks from Urban cowboy - instead. Still, everything here is of a very high quality.

I must make special mention of Runaway, Bonnie's cover of Del Shannon's sixties classic. Which Del recorded it as an up-tempo rock'n'roll song, Bonnie recorded it as a bluesy ballad, making it almost unrecognisable compared to the original. Such dramatic changes to a song don't always work, but this one is pure magic.

The accompanying booklet is particularly noteworthy, containing descriptions of all Bonnie's albums from which tracks are taken, together with comments about the songs selected. Bonnie contributed to the liner notes.

This is an outstanding compilation covering the first half of Bonnie's career. More recently, another compilation (Best of) has been released covering the second half of her career. Furthermore, most of Bonnie's original albums are easy to find. If you end up buying all of Bonnie's albums, you will find that she is a very expensive lady (but well worth the price). In the meantime, this collection provides an ideal introduction to Bonnie's music.

As ever with compilations, it is easy to argue about track selection, but this provides a good overview of the period covered and will hopefully tempt a few people to explore further.

5 out of 5 stars Made Me a Fan for Life!!!!.......2004-10-21

At the tender age of 18, I stumbled upon a strong, intelligent, passionate yet vulnerable female voice in Amercian music that served as a mentor to me. I was a young motherless woman searching for my identity and when I heard Bonnie sing of heartache, love and respect, I found the woman I wanted to be. Having worn out my first Raitt album, the bestselling, grammy winning , Nick of Time, I went looking for more from this rare talent and found The Collection which became my musical bible for the next five years. Though, I have enjoyed all of Bonnie's later work, it is her earlier work that remains my favorite. From the raw sexuality of "Leave Home" to the heartwrenching despair of "The Glow", The Collection highlights the enormous musical and emotional range of this gifted performer. This album is the perfect introduction to an artist who has become nothing short of a national treasure! And for those fans who feel they need no introduction, let me just say, if you haven't heard early Bonnie, you haven't heard Bonnie!

3 out of 5 stars A mediocre collection.......2003-08-13

Featuring songs culled from her 1971-1986 releases, and encompassing classic blues, blues-rock, New Orleans-styled R&B and even quasi-reggae, "The Bonnie Raitt Collection" obviously doesn't include every good song from her first nine albums, and some selections are certainly debatable (a few more up-tempo songs would have been nice, too).
But there is still some really good stuff here:

Junior Wells guests on the excellent original "Finest Lovin' Man", and Raitt demonstrates that she can also play some truly magnificent acoustic rhythm guitar on the superbly groovy "Love Me Like A Man". And there are other highlight as well, including the lovely country-rock ballads (!) "Love Has No Pride" and "Louise", a funky, bluesy rendition of Del Shannon's classic "Runaway", Frederic 'Toots' Hibbert's "True Love Is Hard To Find", and the catchy Bryan Adams-penned rocker "No Way To Treat A Lady".

So, 3 stars or there about - pretty good, but several of Bonnie Raitt's original albums, from which these songs are drawn, are much better. Strangely enough, since Raitt herself made these selections, but she somehow failed to make a truly representative compilation, and this album ends up being less than it could have been.
If I were you, I'd pick up her first two albums instead, they make a better introduction.

3 out of 5 stars The minority vote: doesn't do justice to her earlier work.......2003-03-03

I'm obviously in the minority here if everyone else gave this CD a five star review, but I just don't think it's a great compilation of her work with Warner Bros. Granted, Raitt supposedly compiled it herself, so it's very unlikely it was picked without care. However, this was the first disc I checked out after her trio of Don Was-produced albums for Capitol, and later one when I explored her Warner albums in their entirety, I felt like this CD shortchanged them.

A single disc compilation of her Warner work is ideal, though, because after three solid albums, it became wildly uneven. Furthermore, many songs were done far better live (check out "Write Me a Few of Your Lines/Kokomo Blues"; the version on the current Capitol live album is great, but so is her mid-70's live interpretations), so mixing it up would make it even better. To this CD's credit, it does just that, including two excellent live cuts. However, there are still some glaring omissions, and a handful of cuts here that don't reflect her best work. The cuts from "The Glow" show how mismatched she was with Asher's production (so mismatched, I would've considered excluding the album altogether; a better choice may have been to use live versions), and "No Way To Treat A Lady" feels too mechanical, too manufactured, something that plagued most of the other cuts from the same album. "Runaway" may have been her only 'hit' until "Nick Of Time," but it's not a good reinterpretation of a classic. Meanwhile, "Too Long At The Fair," "Cry Like A Rainstorm," "Write Me a Few of Your Lines/Kokomo Blues," "Run Like A Thief," and "River of Tears" are missing; all of these are GREAT recordings, not to mention great performances vocally, and have some excellent guitar work.

This CD isn't bad for what it is and has some great tracks, but as a whole, it doesn't showcase her best work with the label.

"Prince" Will Oldham has always threatened to make a completely devastating album and this is it. Brooding and strikingly intimate, I See a Darkness picks through the abandoned camps of Bob Dylan and Neil Young, finding lonely tales and ragged melodies strewn about. The magic comes in the light Oldham is able to shine on these songs, rendering them both gorgeously baroque yet starkly modern. --S. Duda

Amazon.com

Will Oldham, the artist formerly known as Palace, has never been concerned with creating pop music. Oldham's forte, murder ballads, antispirituals, dead-sea chanteys, and lost-love songs, has always been "difficult," forcing the listener to confront some rather unseemly topics. Say this about Oldham, however, despite his quirks (cracking vocals, shambolic instrumentation, baroque language), at its best, his music is bracing and, often, very beautiful. That said, I See a Darkness, his second LP since abandoning the Palace moniker, is the most accessible, gorgeous, and moving record of his career. Instead of the gothic, low-fi country feel of many of his projects, Darkness comes off sounding like an early-'70s Neil Young album, comprised of a stately piano backbone and fleshed out by loose-fitting guitar strums. Stylistically, Oldham mixes things up on Darkness and his full band sounds, for once, well practiced and well recorded. Sure, Oldham is still singing about the blackness of his soul, but in between--in small bursting moments--there are bits of light, hope, and a suggestion that maybe--just maybe--there may be redemption through love. That message, presented in these carefully constructed, gently offered songs, pushes this recording beyond the usual, curious appeal of Oldham and into an entirely new realm of greatness. S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart, but an incredible listen.......2006-12-04

I'm an avid music fan. I've listened to quite an array of rock and pop throughout my life and I can say without hesitation that this disc is unlike anything I've ever heard. All of BPB's work is incredibly interesting. He's taken folk and worked in blues, rock, country, all with undertones of both melancholy and joy. In my opinion, this is his definitive work, the one you MUST have if you want to get the complete Bonnie Price Billy experience. I must admit that I cannot listen to this stuff very often because it is such a strange, intense experience. Every once in a while, an artist creates something beyond his medium. Will Oldham has done that here. This is more than music.

5 out of 5 stars Polished.......2005-12-29

For an avid Will Oldham fan like me this album started as a surprise. It actually sounds good! The sound is now more polished, the music not recorded at once and the voice not as shaky as it used to be. You could say it's a more commercial touch but he certainly deserves more credit for his songwriting skills.

The first song 'A Minor Place' relies completly on melody, it's hard to think that the first 2,5 minutes are really the same but the melody is great and should therefor be part of the Oldham top 10.
Second song 'Nomadic Revery' has a haunting chorus in the Appalachian style that could have been sung by David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower.
Track 3 might actually be his most famous song but not in this version but song by Johnny Cash on his American Recordings III. Like so many songs (U2's 'One' for example) that version is actually slightly better.

The quality remains very high throughout the album. The lyrics still are not the most cheerful (Death to Everyone, which does have a lalala part).

I am not sure if I think this is Oldham's best album, I still listen to his Palace-work more, but it certainly is great album and he shows that he is one of the greatest indie songwriters, up there with people like Lou Barlow.

5 out of 5 stars Spare Brilliance.......2005-06-09

On first listen I was disappointed with this album. I expected melancholia but not like this. After a few more spins I figured out what I had missed. This is the most beautiful album. Absolutely the best, it can be sad, it can be hopeful, it can be everything. Will Oldham sounds real, and his reality is haunting and beautiful at the same time. The music is minimalist and sparse which only contributes to the beauty and dynamic of the record. It is one of the best albums of the 1990s and I recommend it to any true music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yo, Willy Oldham Is Off the Hizzle fo' Shizzle!.......2005-02-14

Sorry, that was insipid.

Anyway, few albums this good and this affecting from the late 90's come to mind. Among them would be In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and The Soft Bulletin. Rarely is music such great background and foreground music at the same time. After hearing it a few times at a friend's house some time in 1999, I scoured at least 20 record stores in at least five cities to find a copy of this. I eventually just got it via Amazon.

If anything, I love how deceitful Will Oldham is. What would you expect an album with a title and a cover like those and songs named "Minor Place" "Black" and "Death to Everyone?" Actually, the lyrics are very hopeful and it's nice to hear about the subject matter from a mature adult rather than some shallow, nasal teenager who thinks he has something relevant to say. After the first listen, this album has sincerely killed you softly with its piano, bass, tap-drumming, lazily strummed guitar and Oldham's erie, human voice. It really leaves you feeling dead in a way that so many musicians, by contrast, try to do with distorted guitars, double bass drums and screaming.

Goddamn this is good rainy day music. As my taste in music matures, Loveless slips further and further down my favorites of the 90's list with this edging its way into the top 5. This is a must own for people who like humanly affecting music but hate emo.

5 out of 5 stars A SPOOKY GEM.......2004-11-11

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (aka Will Oldham) creates the scariest take on country music imaginable. In fact, this could easily be labelled 'goth country'.

His lyrics are intensley personal and his voice a deep and dark wonder. His songs are carefully crafted and arranged in an obscure warmth and frailty.

On some occasions the songs creep along steadily, on others errupt into soaring climaxes of double tracked vocals on the brink of collapse. These climaxes don't play on the usual tricks of severe dynamic change or string sections, but rather involve escalations in emotive force that ripple through you.

Will Oldham is a master songwriter, and an expert at creating sound collages and textures not usually associated with country music.

As its title makes clear, the 1991 sequel to Bonnie Raitt's platinum breakthrough on Nick Of Time takes nothing for granted. Raitt had achieved sobriety, renewed commercial focus, and then the payday that the prior album yielded, but Luck Of The Draw mirrors an even fiercer determination to make music as if her life depended on it. Again teamed with producer Don Was, Raitt surpasses herself with her best album to date: her wonderfully lush, blues-rimmed voice and sinuous slide guitar wrap themselves around a dozen potent songs culled from a typically shrewd mix of writers including Paul Brady, John Hiatt, Bonnie Hayes, Shirley Eikhard, and Billy Vera, and Raitt herself turns in her most generous batch of originals yet. Sympathetic guests include Brady and Delbert McClinton on harmony vocals, Richard Thompson on guitar, and Heartbreaker Benmont Tench on organ, in a program including the sassy "Something to Talk About," the sultry "Slow Ride," a soaring "Not the Only One," and the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me." This isn't luck, it's artistry. --Sam Sutherland

I pulled this album out because I heard a cover of "I Can't Make you Love Me" and I haven't put it away yet. Greatness is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Bonnie's Best.......2006-08-23

I was going through my fairly extensive Bonnie Raitt collection to put some tunes on my ipod, and I was reminded of how this album is, for me, Bonnie's best album ever. There are individual songs from other albums that are essential too (Under the Falling Sky, Opening Farewell, Runaway, River of Tears to name a few). But the variety of songs and styles on Luck of the Draw, and the absence of the weak songs that mar some of her other albums (even the iconic Nick of Time) make this the 'desert island disc' out of all of Bonnie's albums, at least for me.

1 out of 5 stars 2.8/10.0.......2006-08-11

Clichés are not something to be endorsed or countenanced by any measure. They lack the effort that should come in purposeful human expression. An individual with a cliché-laden vocabulary is a sign of one of two things: that the individual has the emotional intelligence of a toaster, or, that one just doesn't care.
The first must be true of Bonnie Raitt, or, at least its true of her efforts on Luck of the Draw. The album virtually encapsulates the idea of the cliché: effortless, but clumsy, communicated, but not thought about with any degree of depth, boring, but disconcerting. The music on Luck of the Draw is all soft piano diminuendos, hushed voices, slowly strummed guitars: in short, the kind of stuff you're likely to hear in a dentist's office. The rest of it is composed of the same instrumentation, but with an upbeat tempo; the sound, unfortunately, still remains as unremarkable as on "One Part Be My Lover" or "Slow Ride."
Where is the energy, the vividness and color that is supposed to come with musical expression? It is by all accounts absent on this album, meaning that Luck of the Draw, at best, is an experiment in musical mediocrity. I have to laugh when I think of anyone drawing strength from this kind of music. That's because to draw strength from any music, the music has to be genuine- the music itself has to be strong, it has to inspire. Ms. Raitt may sing about the dramas of love and relationships, but her voice and her words are without character- the album is a headache, not an escape. She is not expressing something that's true- she cannot even manage to express something that's sincere. The album is proof of one of two things; either Raitt has no power or clarity of emotional expression to speak of, or this is a musical counterfeit of terrific proportions.

5 out of 5 stars All tracks are great.......2005-09-28

I liked this CD from the first listen, which is unusual for an original material album - most need a few listens to catch on, but not this one. It's got the big hits "Something to Talk About," "Not the Only One" and "I Can't Make You Love Me" on it, but the album tracks are excellent too - except for one or two of the tracks, all the non-hits are enjoyable as well. Get this album, Bonnie Raitt is apparently someone who you should hear more of than just her "greatest hits."

5 out of 5 stars one long slow sweet ride!.......2005-09-08

I first listened to this album on a road trip 'cross USA so everytime I play it now, it takes me back there, evoking the sights, smells, sounds of then. Two fave tracks being "tangled & dark" + "slow ride"
previous to this, I knew very little of Bonnie or her music, now i'm a true fan.
"I can't make you love me" is truly one of the greatest songs ever written.

"come to me" (a catchy ,slightly reggaeish beat) & "not the only one" two great upbeat songs that are i think in a similar vein.

"jodi & chico" is a great fun break from the norm.
& the final "all at once" has beautiful heartfelt lyrics.

Amazon.com essential recording

Nick of Time is the watershed moment in Bonnie Raitt's recording career, the sound of a survivor finding new focus and purpose in her art after nearly 20 years of generally superb, commercially underachieving recordings. An exquisite interpretive singer and formidable guitarist who'd long ago honed her bluesy chops, Raitt raised the stakes by mixing the usual gourmet spread of smart cover choices with her own candid songs--and she knocked one over the fence with the opening track, the album's title song and a moving confession of a boomer's anxieties about age, death, and the impermanence of love. "Nick of Time" catapulted a feisty rock tomboy into a new station that made her as admired by female fans as the stage door johnnies who'd long loved her rock technique, and she covered the bet with other outside songs from John Hiatt ("Thing Called Love"), Bonnie Hayes ("Love Letter," "Have a Heart"), and Jerry L. Williams ("Real Man") that resonated with her persona as a tough, smart, but ultimately tender woman. --Sam Sutherland

3 out of 5 stars A FEW GREAT TRACKS AND A FEW 'NOT SO GREAT' TRACKS.......2007-02-20

I've always liked BR - her voice especially and, as a rule, the sort of music she performs. The only other album I have (so far) is her first one on a major label - 'Bonnie Raitt' (a very different 'kettle of fish' from 'Nick of Time'). 'Nick of Time' is mainly a mixture of edgy rock songs and slow to medium tempo pop ballads. The production (Don Was) is quite 'lush' at times but it is never over-done.

Some comments about my favourite tracks (songwriters in brackets) :

'THING CALLED LOVE' (John Haitt) - Great swinging version of this classic song, great lyrics, searing electric slide.

'LOVE LETTER' (Bonnie Hayes) - medium tempo, funky rocker.

'REAL MAN' (Jerry L. Williams) - up-tempo, pulsating rock song with solid percussion and some great harp (harmonica) playing.

'NOBODY'S GIRL' (Larry John McNally) - slow tempo, semi-acoustic ballad with pedal steel accompaniment; has a hint of early 'Little Feat' about it.

'I WILL NOT BE DENIED' (Jerry L. Williams) - yet more funky 'swamp-rock' from the pen of the late Jerry Lynn Williams.

'THE ROAD'S MY MIDDLE NAME' (Bonnie Raitt) - mid-tempo blues; I think, the sort of music BR does best.

The remaining tracks are slow to mid-tempo ballads which are pleasant enough but which sound, by comparison, pretty 'lifeless'; they have little to recommend them other than BR's fine vocals and, in some cases, polished instrumental accompaniment.

Having long recorded as Palace Music or Palace, the enigmatic, elusive Bonnie "Prince" Billy continues to confound musical expectations. His latest may well be his loveliest, a series of meditations and tone poems on love and mortality, with the autumnal strains of a chamber quartet and the vocal counterpoint of Dawn McCarthy supporting Billy's tremulous expression of his surreal, stream-of-consciousness lyricism. Results range from the dreamy, bluesy "Cursed Sleep" and the evocation of a British madrigal on "No Bad News" to the discordant propulsion of "The Seedling" and the call and response of the folkish "Then the Letting Go." It all fits together in a manner that defies categorization and dares the listener to resist its aural seduction. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Just as Cave.......2007-05-31

A gorgious record. Oldhams music is becoming mature, aged like wood or spirit. A true treasure and one not to be missed unless you care nothing for poems. This release is on par with Nick Cave's masterpiece "No More Shall We Part". Both artists highly prolific, yet Will seems to be a tad more rooted. Simply amazing to have someone like him around in our lifetime. Sort of like Prefontaine. Go Pre...Go Will.

4 out of 5 stars Chill.......2007-04-07

5 out of 5 stars Inevitable, as if it grew out of the ground..........2007-02-10

This CD is for me, Will Oldham's finest thus far as a solo artist. It has all the sleepy, druggy quality you expect from him, but the backing vocals here provide a crystalline, almost fairport-convention-ish counterpoint to Oldham's soft, broken-in, guy-down-the-block-who's-deeper-than-you-thought-he-was voice. Will is crunchier than crunchy in terms of his hippiedom these days, but the music never suffers from hippie pretensions. The way he pronounces "stairs" on "Bad News" alone should tell you all you need to know about him and his "thing." To those who are mystified or put to sleep by this, you've missed a key factor in appreciating this stuff: it's meant to be modern folk music for mellow times. It isn't party music, and doesn't attempt to "rock" at all, and that's OK. He does three songs IN A ROW in waltz time, for chrissakes. The real kicker is that Oldham is so accomplished at 3/4 that you don't even notice until the third waltz that that's what you're hearing. This record has charms that many "mainstream" listeners might miss, and that's OK. If you wear sweatpants and watch "American Idol" and find Paris Hilton fascinating and are all broken up over the death of Anna Nicole Smith, this CD ain't for you. You may listen to your Coldplay and feel "sophisticated" and leave Bonnie Prince Billy alone, thanks very much. If you like to put on music, lay down and close your eyes and actually LISTEN and be transported somewhere, then you probably already own this. If you don't, then purchase it with all speed. It's mellow and satisfying, like drinking good red wine or reading a good mid-period Richard Brautigan novel. Nice.

5 out of 5 stars No one else is writing songs like this..........2007-01-22

While this disc is not as good as "I See a Darkness" (certainly a member of the proverbial "deserted island disc list"), "The Letting Go" is terrific. BPB is so creatively prolific, giving his fans twists and turns that are almost always welcome (the disc with Tortoise is an odd choice, however). Standout tracks include "Love Comes to Me", "Cursed Sleep" and the title track, which maintains BPB's mystique as much as anything he's ever written. Any fan of Americana should begin to include the work of BPB in their disc collection. As a fellow with more than 500 discs, I can safely say that there isn't much more rewarding, thought-provoking music in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful; True to Form.......2007-01-09

When I was told that this album had strings on it to accompany the guitar, I was skeptical. Then I listened to it. The string accompaniment works beautifully. I don't know from what well Will Oldham draws the emotion with which he has performed album after album, but it runs deep and dark. The Letting Go is just another in his long line of exceptional albums that consistently deliver in terms of songwriting, music, and performance. I whole-heartedly recommend this album to both new listeners and long-time fans.

Judging from her two live releases, this and 1995's Road Tested, everyone's favorite slide-guitar-playing, rootsy redhead loves working with other musicians. Generally known for raising the visibility of older blues and R&B legends such as Ruth Brown and Charles Brown, she invites more contemporary stars Ben Harper, Norah Jones, Keb' Mo', and Alison Krauss along for this set. Recorded during a September 2005 evening, this slick CD/DVD package catches Raitt and her muscular four-piece on tour supporting Souls Alike. Perhaps not surprisingly, the setlist is heavily weighted to that album, with nearly half the selections drawn from the disc. Although those songs are well played, they don't differ markedly from the studio versions. It would have been more interesting to cherry-pick older, more obscure material from Raitt's extensive career. Regardless, the duets work well in a restrained VH1 way, with Harper the highlight as he lays into the gospel "Well, Well, Well" and the double-barreled slide showcase "Two Lights in the Nighttime." Raitt's in fine fettle throughout, slinging stinging slide solos and singing with her usual emotional fervor.

Oddly, the 52-minute CD version of the 17-song, hour-and-a-half video omits the lovely Norah Jones-assisted "Tennessee Waltz" and Alison Krauss's hoedown on "Papa Come Quick." The professionally shot DVD expands the sound to surround, but nearly mars the generally fine set with excessive camera movement; garish, obtrusive lighting; and a brash, hyperactive video background that is, at best, distracting--and more often undermines Raitt's earthy performance and classy collaborations with her band and musically amiable guests. --Hal Horowitz

I bought this as i'm a big fan of bonnie raitt for a long number of years.
The band she has assembled for this outing is second to none.Great sound,

I'VE LISTENED TO ROCK, POP, BLUES & JAZZ FOR THE LAST 50 YRS.
BONNIE WAS THERE FOR MOST OF THEM. SHE'S ONE OF THE FEW THAT HAS INFLUENCED THEM ALL. THESE DISCS REALLY SHOW HER GIFT FOR COLABORATING & AT THE SAME TIME ILLUMINATING THE GIFTS OF HER CONTEMPORARIES AS WELL
AS HER MUSICAL FOLLOWERS. IF YOU KNOW BONNIES WORK, IT'S A GREAT ADDITION.
IF YOU DONT, IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO GET STARTED.

3 out of 5 stars Good Music - Bad edition?.......2006-12-29

I got this CD+DVD from Amazon UK and found it a great concert. Bonnie has discovered a way to improve even more her songs. The duets with her friends are the best of the entire performance and this is already a reason to buy this pack.

But being a 2005 concert, the visual side is not so great. The background chosen for the event (a giant screen with light dots moving all the time) doesn't help to focus on the performers and the image is not as sharp as it should be. Compare it to concerts recorded lately like Musicares tribute to James Taylor, Mark Knopfler & Emmilou Harris Real Live Roadrunning or Lightning In A Bottle from various Blues legends including Bonnie Raitt and you will understand what I mean. They are pristine clear recordings, almost High Definition quality.

But to worsen the situation when you select the 5.1 Dolby Digital option from the menu, there is no sound at all from the center loudspeaker and very little from the surrounds (just like a delayed eco sound). It makes me think if the original DVD was recorded in Stereo and later "adapted" to 5.1.

As I thought there was a problem with this DVD I asked for a new one just to find it was in the same condition. I don't know if the problem lies in the European batch of records or if it happens the same worldwide. I would appreciate any other reviews about this question.

I gave only three stars to this set because of the edition. The music of Bonnie Raitt and the rest of performers well deserve five stars. The fact is that I don't think of returning it under any circumstances.

Producer Joseph Papp's Broadway spin on Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance cannily employs pop firepower in its casting, adding an inviting Yankee accent to roles normally associated with (and sometimes embalmed in) plummy English locution. Erstwhile country-rocker Linda Ronstadt, who by this point had already proven she could tackle pre-rock pop standards, stretches successfully as its heroine. Rex Smith, then dismissed as a pop-rock heartthrob, proves he could be a "legitimate" musical leading man, a niche he's since inhabited comfortably. And Kevin Kline returns to his stage training as the hearty King of the Pirates. Onstage, Papp celebrated the slapstick possibilities of the deliberately silly plot, which weaves reliably tart observations about class consciousness and gender politics into a pirate band's invasion of a Cornish coastal town. A faithful big-screen adaptation added Angela Lansbury for marquee clout, but even without that grande dame of the Great White Way, this original stage cast is a corker, the music glorious and the performances spirited. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pirates of Penzance .......2007-06-27

Fantastic CDS based on the stageplay and video. I missed Angela Lansbury as Ruth but it is a fanatastic recording and interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack.......2007-03-08

You have to be a muscial fan to love this. This play is very fun and funny. This soundtrack has the songs from this wonderful play that you will want to hear over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Recording of an Outstanding Score.......2006-11-07

The entire "Pirates" score plus much of the dialogue is found in this recording. The voices are extremely appropriate to each of the characters, and the comedy of the score is apparent. The energy is extremely high, which, in turn, excites the listener. I never tire of listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful G & S.......2006-11-04

My favourite performance of this classic Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta. Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstat, and the whole cast are perfect.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD!!.......2006-10-30

I love listening to these CD's. (There are 2 of them.) This recording of The Pirates of Penzance is great fun and quite entertaining. The lyrics are enclosed so I can check to see what is being sung if I'm not sure. The melodies are enchanting. The wonderful humor of Gilbert and Sullivan is intact. The silliness and musical talent remind me of the Marx Brothers, especially something like A Night at the Opera.

Linda Ronstadt is amazing! Kevin Kline can do anything! George Rose IS the modern Major General! And Rex Smith ("how rare his beauty") is perfect!
