As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise Sheppard

This is just a fun CD. It makes you want to dance.
We listen to this in the Operating Room and it makes the atmosphere less tense.

5 out of 5 stars NOTHING LESS THAN 5 STARS.......2007-02-13

New to this genre, I am blown away! Variety, beat, talent... I can not get to my other cds. CAN NOT agree with other unimpressed reviewers. Listen once, listen twice... Listen to that complex music and those words!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-01-31

I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

The Dandy Warhols' fourth album arrives with a cover that melds Sticky Fingers and The Velvet Underground and Nico. One therefore assumes that leader Courtney Taylor-Taylor's claim that predecessor Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia was "the last classic rock album" was a bit tongue-in-cheek. (Actually, one had assumed that already.) Reversing rock's usual guitars-front-keyboards-as-filigree, Monkey House takes the Dandys into a challenging sphere while remaining undeniably organic sounding. The band and co-producers Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran and Tony Visconti (Low, Electric Warrior) have built elaborate but never stifling arrangements of these songs--check out the way guest Nile Rodgers's rhythm guitar part subtly funks up the last minute of "Scientist," or how the group makes the pulsing "(You Come In) Burned" perhaps the best yet of its trademark trancelike album closers. Taylor-Taylor continues to display growing self-knowledge in his "words of comic wisdom": "I Am Sound" isn't a declaration of aural omniscience, but a simple affirmation of OK-ness, while "The Last High" dissects the end of a high-style love affair. Miss this and miss one of the year's finest rock & roll records. --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Mediocre House.......2007-01-30

I was expecting more of 13 tales from urban bohemia, and that is not what this album is. Actually, its more of a dance album than a rock n roll album. 13 tales is one of my favorite albums of all time because of the obvious influences of some of my favorite old singers/songwriters (Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Lou Reed), but with monkey house, they clearly did not have the same influences or even the same creative force which made 13 tales so memorable and varied. Basically, you can tell that the guy who produced Duran Duran albums had a large say in the production of this album and I find that sad. I do really like Plan A, though, and I listen to it about 10 times in a row and sing along then take the album off. I would not recomend this album unless you want some 80s sounding synth-pop to dance around to. But if you don't have 13 tales, get it quick.

3 out of 5 stars A Different Dandy Album.......2007-01-29

Make no mistake about it, this is different from 13 Tales and Come Down, and sometimes change is both good and bad. The songs "The Last High" and "We Used to Be Friends" are two of my favorite tracks in any kind of music. "The Last High" is a trippy, but undeniably catchy song, one of my all-time favs. While "Friends" is just a great "hook-driven" rock song. "Plan A", and "Heavenly" are the other good songs on this album while "Rock Bottom" is decent. The Dandies have lightened up a bit as the guitar is not as heavy and the keyboards have become more of a focal point. I loved 13 Tales and Come Down as albums, but this one just isn't as good overall as those two. This one has great individual songs, but not enough other material to make this a great album. This is a decent album, but not great. Its one of those CD's that you just listen to a several songs then change the CD. I'd suggest just buying or downloading those 5 good tracks and the rest you can skip over.

I thought this was a terrific album that was very well produced but different from the earlier music.More commercial...Hard core fans might not approve....

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a Must Have!.......2006-10-01

I bought this cd today, and was listening to it in the car. It made me want to pull the car over, get out, and Dance!!!! I absolutely Love it!

4 out of 5 stars I Try to Live on Science Alone.......2006-08-21

As a Dandy Warhol newcomer, I was pleased to find that MONKEY HOUSE displayed none of the weaknesses of ODDITORIUM. In fact, some of this CD's strongest tracks suggest the mid-1970s work of David Bowie. And that's a very good thing, as it means there are bona-fide quality songs here. (BTW, Bowie apparently asked the group to open for one of his tours in 2003, the year this project came out. Coincidence?)

This album is a tribute to a Kurt Vonnegut short story collection, but one needn't be familiar with that author to recognize how excellent some of the pop herein is. It's laid-back, catchy, and sometimes stupidly goofy, as with the song "I Am a Scientist." ("I am a scientist... I try to live on science alone..." [repeat many times]).

Don't get me wrong; this isn't a perfect album; in fact, only five of its songs are good, but those five are very, VERY good indeed. (For the record, they are "We Used to Be Friends," the afore-mentioned science song, "The Dandy Warhols Love Almost Everyone," "The Last High," and "I Am Sound.")

Album Description

True rock legends distinguish themselves not only by contributing several classics to musical history, they also keep their artistic output at a permanently high level and Â- despite all routine Â- always have a fresh wind blowing through their band structure. UFO fulfils all these criteria: next to classics such as Phenomenon, Force It and No Heavy Pettin, which saw the band clock up one success after the other during the Seventies, the beginning of the new millennium finds Phil Mogg, Pete Way and Paul Raymond as inspired and creative as ever. Thanks to American guitarist, Vinnie Moore, who joined the fold three years ago and proved his class and significance for the group on You Are Here, his debut recording with UFO, and the live cut, Showtime, the band has grown even stronger. Their latest release, The Monkey Puzzle, marks the return of drummer Andy Parker, who had been part of the original line-up that recorded the legendary debut at the end of the Sixties and has already played live on stage again with his old pals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Production and Great Rock Album.......2007-07-01

I'll leave the song-by-song reviews to others and I'll just state that UFO have come out with a well produced album that sounds great. The drums, guitars and vocals all come through nicely and will be a joy to hear on any system. This is their second album w/o Schenker ( 'Walk on Water' was rather pedestrian and that was with him gracing the 6-strings) and I for one don't really care that he's no longer affiliated with the band. Vinnie Moore does a superb job...period. As technically gifted as he is, Mr. Moore with his current and past work w/ UFO has NOTHING left to prove.
Well done UFO..you folks know exactly what is needed in this otherwise musically drab environment. Keep up the exemplary work.
Other 70's and 80's rockers need to take a listen and realize that it's not just the songs that matter but also the overall sound quality (including the mix). Some of us have an ear and really care for that "well produced sound" and a badly recorded album like Rush - Vapor Trails for instance, makes an otherwise enjoyable album...a coaster.
Cheers to you all and happy listening.

4 out of 5 stars a great testament to a great band.......2007-06-30

I have been a UFO fan since way back when,my first ever album being obsession and I have pretty much amassed their entire catalog over the years. I first heard them when I was about 16,and now at the age of 41 Im to the point where I purchase material by the band often without any pre listening. That being said, some of their newer material like Walk on Water left me kind of flat, and even though Schenker was a part of that endeavor it still lacked a spark. Enter Vinnie Moore, and now UFO sounds like a band rejuvenated. Not since Paul Chapman has a non Schenker axeman sounded this good. The songwriting leaves a bit to be desired, but then if I compare anything to such archaic gems as Phenomenon,Force It,Lights Out or the outstanding Obsession, I will be instantly disappointed. Considering how long these guys have been making great hard rock and the massive body of work they have built, its rather refreshing to have a new effort that shines as brightly as this one. Welcome back Andy Parker, his drumming sounds fresh and revitalized, and there are a lot of songs on here that simply rock hard. Its amazing to me that these musicians have never received any radio respect,as is true with any of their albums there never seems to be a shortage of FM ready material. Heavenly Body is one of the tunes that sealed the deal for me,but a lot of other songs are strong as well, including World Cruise,Some Other Guy,Down By The River and Rolling Man. If I'm comparing this to their comeback disc Walk on Water,I'd have to be brutally honest and say I find there to be more quality tunes on this one.The production is strong, the music lush, and the songs are a reminder to me at least that true rock and roll still exists in this world of cookie cutter copycat bands and talentless hacks that only know a few chords. This is a must have for TRUE UFO fans.

3 out of 5 stars new to ufo.......2007-05-22

well not being a fan of ufo and very new to this group, i would say this album and you are here are definite good medium range rock. not many surprises, but the kind of good rock to me where you can never really say your not in the mood to listen to. Lots of rock/metal i need to be in the mood to hear. This album is one that no matter where i am, no matter what time it is, this album is never a bad choice. A definite crowd pleaser. Vinnie Moore does have talent, but with that said, in my opinion there are far better. But overall, this album not the best i've ever heard, but does get a definite thumbs up.

3 out of 5 stars I've completely abandoned the idea of comparing Moore to Schenker.......2007-03-25

I have nothing but bad memories of Moore and the whole Mike Varney "shredder" nightmare...a bunch of untalented stoner "Wayne's World" kids crawling out of the suburbs with bad perms and eye liner and platform shoes and a burning desire to whip off more notes per second than Eddie Van Halen. Got boring after the first zillion notes. That said...sorry, Vinnie Moore "Mind's Eye" fans...the new UFO CD "Monkey Puzzle" isn't all that bad. I burned the tracks to my PC and often play it while working. With Andy Parker back in the fold to replace the departed Jason Bonham, this is as close to "real" UFO as we're likely to get without Michael Schenker. The songs bounce back and forth between riff-driven and melodic...just like any good UFO album...and there's no shortage of guitar solos. What's missing? Schenker's attitude, and rather than bemoan its loss, I throw this one on every once in a while and tell myself that it's better than Bad Company was without Paul Rodgers. It's better than the post-Ace Frehley and Peter Criss Kiss. It's better than "Rock And A Hard Place," the Aerosmith album in which Steven Tyler bottomed out with his heroin addiction while Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left the band (any hardcore Jimmy Crespo or Rick Dufay fans out there? Didn't think so). I think anyone who believes that Schenker can be "replaced" probably isn't a UFO fan to begin with, but that's just me. "The Monkey Puzzle" is only rock and roll, and I like it in a "3 stars" kind of way. It's rockin' background music that sounds good while you're doing something else. And yes, Moore has grown in leaps and bounds since "Mind's Eye"...I'll give him that much.

5 out of 5 stars Got the Monkey Off My Back.......2007-02-15

I can't understand why anyone would consider this album a regression from "You Are Here". I think this is a fabulous album much better than "You Are Here" and their best since "Walk on Water". The material is very strong and fresh with a definite bluesy feel. Just check out "Hard Being Me", "Down by the River", "World Cruise" and "Some Other Guy" (personally I would have preferred a harmonica solo rather than Vinnie's first guitar solo on the latter). All the tracks are really good and earthy, from the heavy guitar sound of "Heavenly Body" to the more conventional UFO ballad style numbers like "Who's Fooling Who" and "Drink too Much". In fact I like all the songs with perhaps the weakest "Kingston Town" still palatable.
I saw them live in Nov '06 and although the gig was great I was disappointed they only played "Drink too Much" from this album. I would much prefer them to play this new material and dispense with some of the older tunes unless Vinnie starts playing the solo's a little more accurately.
I have to admit that I am really comfortable with this line up and the rock `n' roll craftsmanship produced on this album. I am playing this all the time in the car so "out with the old and in with the new" so to speak. As a kid I was one of the die hards where anything produced without Michael Schenker on lead just wasn't UFO. Whilst that was still my favourite era I don't under estimate the brilliance of Phil Mogg and Pete Way anymore which is still alive and kicking. Now much wiser and wrinklier than these two I have finally got the monkey off my back!

i think to truly appreciate this album you'd have to follow "nocturnal" and "magnum force"... now i know what some of you are thinking, "why do hella people keep refering to the "ruck and rock albums"? ... because they're tight work together... don't get me wrong, these two mc's are right on point by themselves but they do major damage together... anyways, sean p comes out with his vibe that he is known for... but i'll be a bit too real, for me i only like almost every other track but i really listen to like 5 tracks on this album... but i'm biased because i followed them since nocturnal, even though i'm from the west coast i always gave some love to some east coast rhymes... in the end, i think he coulda came out a bit more better, but that's why the 4 stars...

3 out of 5 stars Consistent solo debut from Bootcamp alum.......2007-01-04

I'll be honest. I just like the way Ruck says 'Sean Peeee.'

But more than that, I've been a big BCC fan for quite a while. And as someone who generally judges Bootcamp-affiliated albums by how many Beatminerz song they have, this is a pleasant surprise.

There are no Beatminerz songs on here, but the album is solid musically, with a variety of producers from 9th Wonder to Khrysis to P.F. Cuttin', and the vibe is definitely soulful.

Soul samples wail over the one-two punch beats of 'One Two Y'all' and 'Onion Head.' Those are followed by the faux-Pharrell bounce of 'Fake Neptune,' which doesn't appear to be a dis record, so I'm a little confused by the title, but whatever; the beat is hot.

The middle third of the album slows down a little by way of a few lackluster beats, but snaps back into action with a triple string-heavy trio of bangers, 'I Love You (B****),' 'Bye Bye,' which has a nice Buckshot verse and 'Spliff N Wessun," which doesn't have Tek or Steele but does feature a nice verse from Rustee Juxx.

The title track is my joint, though... just some low bass, heavy drums and monkey screeches.

Ruck's flow is at its best when it's paired with Rock as part of Heltah Skeltah, but like I said before, for a Beatminerz-free record, 'Monkey Barz' is pretty impressive.

5 out of 5 stars It grows on you slowly.......2006-12-26

This album is very good...and sean price always leaves you wanting to hear more after each track is over...some of the beats are hot..and some beats take a lill time to get used to...but all in all it's a hot album

The stuff he says is ridiculous and unheard of, and he puts it nice with beats...can't wait for the next one

5 out of 5 stars Boot Camp Click Stand Up!!!!!.......2006-08-25

Sean Price a.k.a Ruck of Heltah Skeltah steps out the shadow of his partner Rock with stunning results. The beats go downe smooth and bars are like a punch to the chest. He tackles lots of street subject whith a bad guy like swager. Matters like how he's going to shoot you and punch your bi*ch, stealing chains and countless other topics. It's a good mix with the soulfull beats, belive it or not. I only recomond this CD for BCC fans or if you like hardcore raps with a a easy going back drops.

a lot of fine folks love this album, critic and non-critic alike, so don't let me drive you away, but i've tried getting into this album more than a few times over the years, and i made another attempt yesterday, and it's just not working for me. i am not one who automatically dislikes slick polished production on an album, but with this group i just don't feel it works. i love the raw power of their 1st album, and ditto the live set "full house," this turn toward the mainstream forsakes those blues-rocker days in favor of funk, ballads, shuffles, and arena rock. i want to love it. i just don't. the title track "monkey island," is fine, nothing much else here strikes me so. very professional sounding, very uninspiring. mediocre material from a band that did much better elsewhere. sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2007-01-10

Most modern music can be categorized into specific eras, such as the 50s or 90s, but some music stands out as timeless as it always sounds fresh and new. Two tracks on this cd, the title track 'Monkey Island' with its strange narrative and changing rhythms, and 'Surrender' with its funky latin beat, fall into this second category, making this cd a worthwhile addition to a good eclectic collection of modern music

5 out of 5 stars Soul-Searching, Experimental J. Geils Band Album.......2005-08-24

On MONKEY ISLAND, the J. Geils Band experimented musically and wrote lyrics that delved deep into difficult issues. Many of the lyrics seem to be warnings against getting into dangerous situations, and have inspired me to place pictures of pretty actresses in my wallet and on my wall as a deterrent against the types of behaviors described in songs such as "Somebody", "Wreckage", and the title track. This album also contains a cover of the R&B oldie "I Do." This album is essential for anyone who has a tendency to get themselves into bad situations.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Geils sound, one of their best.......2005-08-23

You have Cissy Houston doing lead on "Surrender" on this CD. You have the late, great, Luther Vandross doing background vocals. You have classic Geils. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting album...uniquely J. Geils Band.......2004-12-24

I loved this album when it first came out and I still love it today. This is the kind of album I wish someone (anyone!) would produce today. This is an album with an attitude -- it's funky, it's groovy, it's tough, it's fun, it's sad and it's even sweet at times. There is truly something for everyone on this album -- from the hot, hot, hot Surrender featuring Cissy Houston to the unbelievable harmonica solo from Magic Dick and Seth Justman's stellar keyboards on the hauntingly jazzy and beautiful Monkey Island. Wreckage, the final track, closes the album on such as achingly satisfying note that you'll want to play the whole thing over again. Justman and Wolf really hit this one on the mark with a combination of rock and roll, blues, and jazz that shows off their great dimensionality, highlights their musical roots and gives a glimpse of what's to come on their later albums. I HIGHLY recommend this album!

Album Description

By turns hilarious and melancholy, rockin' and melodious, Jonathan Coulton's lovely ditties about vengeful nerds, ennui-afflicted clowns, partially-imagined historical figures, and devotees of a certain Swedish prefab furniture store are insanely clever without ever being too clever for their own good. They repeatedly lure you into laughing before suddenly breaking your heart. And the sick part is, you keep coming back. Coulton's is the voice of every spooky elementary school kid who could never quite keep his shirt tucked in or shoes tied; every lovelorn mason and mad scientist; every one of us who has ever sat despairingly on the floor, surrounded by parts of an Ikea endtable, weeping over our allen wrenches. (He also acquits himself beautifully in the ever-popular genre of odes to outdoor copulation.)

5 out of 5 stars A great humble musician.......2006-10-25

I've seen him live twice in Camden, Maine (at the 2004 and 2006 Pop!Tech conferences) and he gets better everytime. His music is linked to our daily lives. He reminds me that we are what we are and not what we pretend to be. I strongly recommend his music.

5 out of 5 stars Jonathan Coulton is as creative as he is prolific.......2006-08-21

Jonathan Coulton's music is varied, fun and clever. It is a real departure from "All Our Songs Sound The Same by the "Mediocre Musicians Du Jour".

3 out of 5 stars A Worthy Heir to the Bonobo name?.......2006-02-01

So, here we have it... Bonobo's second album. Well, here goes. As a passionate fan of Bonobo's first album, 'Animal Magic,' I have to approach my judgment of their second outing with some tact. Their sound on 'Magic' was a much needed departure from what had all-too-quickly become the norm in downbeat/chillout music; namely, slick, glossy, but often bland and 2-dimensional loops of knob twiddling, laughable techno-diva-vocals, and pedantic melodies. Bonobo's adventurous plunge into rich, moody, layered cinematic arrangements - often the most lauded trait by reviewers - broke the above-trend with grace and stealth. Yet it was by no means a totally "new" concept; virtually every genre in music has seen at least one artist every few years who delves into the narrative qualities of orchestral movements as an undercurrent to their vocals and beats. But the trend perseveres for good reason - it's beautiful, unique (in the grand scheme of things), and unfolds a much deeper, more complex landscape into which the listener can journey. It gives the album a 'theme' through which the various "characters" (i.e. songs) can wander and sail, without having to double back on their path every three minutes as is the case in more formula driven sounds.
On 'Animal Magic' songs like 'Wayward Bob', 'Shadowtricks', and 'Terrapin' pour themselves upon the listener like honey, swirling around the senses and enveloping the mind in a warm, luxurious, and seductive vibe. And it harkens to mind the less-known but equally, if not more brilliant, work of Snooze on 'The Man in the Shadow' [a gorgeous album made several years earlier that went out of print until the group's long awaited follow up]. 'Animal Magic' in whole delivers, structurally, a range of development that is rarely found in downbeat, but often rather on soundtracks, or in the artful craftsmanship of more alternative acts. It was, simply, a triumph for the Downbeat genre.

On 'Dial M for Monkey' - a HIGHLY anticipated release because of 'Magic's brilliance - the effect is actually difficult to describe. It's pretty, soothing, and even bold in rare moments. Clearly, Bonobo's skill with arrangement and their understanding of the equipment they're working with is still well intact. They certainly haven't lost any technical aptitude, and seem even more aware of the "trusty-tricks" in electronic music that 'move units.' And perhaps it is this comfort in using the tricks that, sadly, renders 'Dial M' a rather prosaic, lackluster, and most of all phoned-in attempt. It's not a 'bad' album! And if you want something to throw into the CD changer as a safe back-up if Zero7's 'When it Falls' or Air's 'Moon Safari' get too scratched up and start skipping, or if you just want to underscore a lively cocktail party or please your customers in a Lounge, 'Dial M' is a pristine addition and will never disappoint. But, it also won't surprise... And 'Animal Magic' - at least in the first few plays - always offered a pleasant tickle of the unexpected. 'Dial M' on the other hand, left me asking, "why?" As in, why the side-step? It feels almost like the studio tinkerings that might have (should have) been woven into a much more intricate tapestry of songs; one which was of course never made. And, at the risk of sounding harsh, I will NEVER buy 'Dial M'. Having sampled every track, I doubt I would even download a couple of them to use as anything more than filler. [And I despise filler] Because that is really all that we are offered here - filler. It's damn good filler, and a far cry better than most of the nauseating, government-cheese, pseudo-lounge/tropical/soft-jazz junk to be found on the average chillout albums. But I felt very let down, and deflated after checking this album out, having built up very high expectations listening to 'Magic'.
If you didn't know otherwise, 'Dial M' would logically feel much more like the freshman act that 'Animal Magic' would have towered over in a staggering, sophomore growth spurt. Had they really been released in that order, at least the stigma around 'Dial M' wouldn't be one of such disappointment, but more so tolerance of immaturity. However, as a follow up, it really makes itself instantly obsolete, as it is plainly incomparable to the mastery of 'Magic'.

The true test, of course, lies in what they do next... In the case of a forgettable second album, the third album is often either a pilgrimage of redemption, or proverbial Iceberg that can sink a group, especially in the enormous sea of downbeat music, in less than an hour. I have high hopes for a victorious return on their next disc, but honestly, it could go either way.
So, if someone offers to give you a copy of 'Dial M' for free, don't refuse it. But I would suggest a long exploration of 'Animal Magic' before ever purchasing 'Dial M' with your own money. Believe me, I gave 'Dial M' a very generous try - and I always attempt to recognize the positive qualities in any CD. Again, it isn't bad; it's just not that exciting either.

4 out of 5 stars Creative, Innovative, and Smart... 4.5 stars.......2005-06-22

This is so difficult to describe, it's kind of pointless, but let me give it a try.

This is mainly world music, electronica, downtempo, breaks (amazing beats), jazz (horns, strings, flutes, etc.), trip-hop, and groovy basslines ALL WRAPPED IN AN INCREDIBLY WELL-PRODUCED CD. Breath-taking album. Everytime you play it, you find different elements and sounds that take you different places. It can be edgy, it can be dark, it can be classy, it can be smooth. But it can never be bad. It all depends on your mood (but believe me, it doesn't matter what your mood is, you will always enjoy this one).

This is a lot of music ! Brilliant !!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-01-01

After hearing the song "Pick Up" on my local trip-hop/chill-out/worldmusic radio station, i knew i had to pick up Bonobo's "Dial M For Monkey"! An awesome release influenced by plenty of international sounds and solid, heavy/chilled beats, "Dial M" is a sure fire record to please any emotional and chilled listener.

4 out of 5 stars Fishbone for the SOAD fan. .......2005-06-12

Out Of all the fishbone albums. This one is probably the Hardest, heaviest, angriest, album out of thier columbia albums, and thier most directly to the point out of all of them. Where all of the other kinda toyed around with you for awhile amoungst the message, this one is a full-on brutal assault, while still remaining far more eclectic, than most hard rock out there, and still maintaining traces of the funk, and ska they have been carrying with them. Though it is slightly more straitforward than Reality of my surroundings.

5 out of 5 stars "Who do YOU Serve?".......2004-03-20

...First of all, I am a huge fan of Fishbone...or at least I WAS until Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd left and the band started releasing sub-par material left and right ("Give a Monkey a Brain" was their last great album, in my opinion). If you are not familiar with Fishbone, you may want to first purchase "Truth and Soul" and/or "In Your Face" (which are both fantastic albums and more "commercial" sounding than this one) before you dive into the heavy-duty nuttmeg of "Give a Monkey..."
I think this album along with "Reality of My Surroundings" are Fishbone's greatest...This one is their heaviest, featuring a few "metal" songs ("Swim", "Servitude", and "End the Reign"). These songs are some of the greatest on the album but I think some fans couldn't hang with that..."Unyielding Conditioning" (ska) and "Lemon Meringue" (soul/funk) are two of the most well written songs ever by Fishbone. "Nutt Megalomaniac" is funky as hell. "They All Have Abandoned Their Hopes" is a hauntingly apocalyptic song...one of my favorites. "Warmth of Your Breath" is definitely NOT a love song. It's a funky little speed metal ditty directed at certain police officers...
The entire cd is awesome, no weak songs. The musicianship is outstanding...Norwood's bass lines are as funky as ever (especially on "Lemon Meringue")...Kendall Jones and John Bigham lay down some great guitar and Angelo Moore and Chris Dowd's vocals are some of their best work ever. This album sounds fresh to this day...Fishbone WAS one of the most underrated bands ever and they never got the success a group of this magnitude deserved. This was the last album they did with Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd and, for me at least, their departure marked the end of Fishbone as we knew it. I have the albums that followed and while they have some good songs here and there they don't come close to matching Fishbone when they were in their heyday. Kendall Jones' songwriting skills are sorely missed on all the albums that followed.
"Give A Monkey..." is a like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the ears but it will take most people several listens to uncover all the sonic nuggets that are hidden.

5 out of 5 stars Unassailable...!!!!.......2004-01-24

My fave Fishbone album. This one has it all- a seamless, and I mean seamless, blend of styles. I'm not talking Mr. Bungle mix of styles (not that it's a bad thing- far from it, long live the cult of Patton) I'm talking each song sounds like the pinacle of whatever genre Fishbone happen to inhabitting/shredding at that given moment.

Take your pick- maelstrom-metal, funk, ska, reggae, psychedelia, and even a hint at Gospel (No Fear- stylisticaly- is a gospel song... well, the organ just makes it sound like Gospel, or in this case Gospel-funk rock without the odious 'oh-please-breathe-on-me-oh-God lyrics and afro-american yodeling that passes for gospel singing... militant atheist that I am...)

On ONE FREAKIN ALBUM!!!! They manage to summon the mothership, send out the best mosh-anthem I have EVER heard, Channel the ghosts of Eddie Hazel and Sid Vicious (in one song no less), crank out one of the few reggae tunes I can stomach, skank-their way to paradise in a way that most 3rd wave skasters can only drool at, Out Kool both Kool AND The Gang and invent a cure for sanity and the drab pabulum that chokes media of all species.

I mean, it's just impossible to take any of the 'hard' bands out there seriously after putting their albums next to this. They seem flat, monochromatic, lifeless, dull. Unfunky. Lyricallly Fishbone may not be the most original but they play to their strengths, are inventive and funny and certainly capable of stuff as poignant/eloquent as anything that 'Dear Charlotte' have ever penned.

And yet, this album kinda tanked (despite their prominent Lollapalooza placement... I don't get it- that was the first year that People bitched about Lollapalooza- year 3... but Primus? Dinosaur Jr? and Fishbone? It was one of the best shows I'd ever seen, ah but I digress...)

These guys couldn't fail even if they were drop-kicked into the studio with Avril, baby Spice, Nick carter, the result wold still leave you wondering what the hell assulted you and left you wanting more...

Oh, I'm 25 years old and have been to more concerts than I can recall and still will unhesitatingly state that Fishbone put on THE BEST live show I have ever seen- I don't care what your bag is, The Bone will stuff it for you. And they play for hours. You will leave the venue sore and deaf and maybe (as I have been known to do) you will drive a couple hours to see them again the next night in a different town or state.

4 out of 5 stars FISHBONE finally rocks hard.......2003-07-28

Album sells have never been FISHBONE's forte. Because their albums are ahead of our time. This 1993 rockfest of 'GIVE A MONKEY A BRAIN AND HE'LL SWEAR HE'S THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE',whew, is the hardest FISHBONE has ever been. 'THE REALITY OF MY SURROUNDINGS', their best album, was close. If you just wanna rock hard there is "Swim","Servitude","Black Flowers","Warmth Of Your Breath","End The Reign","Drunk Skitzo" and "No Fear". The funk and reggae/ska songs are here but this is more of a rock album than a FISHBONE album, which is cool, but the fun out of FISHBONE albums, the humor,is not in this one. Too much of serious KENDALL? (the first member to leave the band). The album is good, but it's just NOT a FISHBONE album.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2003-07-25

This album has aged amazingly well - whenever I'm in the mood for Fishbone, I put this one on. Although "Truth & Soul" is probably their best, it sounds a bit dated today. "Monkey" is simply amazing in its breadth, from the crunching metal of "Servitude" (which at first I didn't like but might now be my favorite track) to the more melodic rock of "Black Flowers" and "No Fear", to the straight-up P-Funk style "Lemon Meringue", to the fantastic sunny ska of "Unyielding Conditioning", quite possibly one of the happiest-sounding tunes ever recorded (though with somber lyrics). This is the last album recorded before the weirdness with Kendall caused the band to turn into the "speed metal with horns" incarnation. This album captures that ferocity balanced with the melodic hooks of their previous works. You gotta love it.

The soundtrack to the Movie hackers was great, Hackers 2 "inspired by" the movie was even better and to my surprise Hackers 3 was even better! Third time's the charm certainly applies to this CD and the series. All three were great and worth purchasing. If you only purchase on of the three though, I'd suggest this one!

To Jack Van Zant and anyone who read his review:
He talkded about the missing song 'Squeeze - Heaven Knows' but you can find that song on the Original 1st Hackers Soundtrack. It's the alst track (Track 14)
Just search it here on amazon.com and you will find it...

Just thought I'd help you out! :P
P.S. Hackers is one of my all-time favourites, and ONE of the reasons why, is because of the excellent music they use...Especially when Dade and Kate (Crash & Burn) start battling it out on The Prodigy's 'ONE LOVE'...AMAZING!
I have the european DVD, so unfortunetely I do not have the 8-page booklet! (Damn!) And the DVD CHEAT (When you can watch an extra GIBSON Animation when you press the LEFT button to highlight the 'Hackers' logo) does not work on my DVD!! :( I can't buy the American one either, because it is Region 1, and even thoug it works on my DVD player, i would rather want all my DVD's to be Region 2 (For respect of my friends' DVD players)

    Thank you for reading! :)

"i love you...i love you today..."
didnt think to go buy the soundtrack at the time...
    nor did i ever...
everytime watched the movie, that song stuck with me.
last week watched the movie again, wrote down 'choice'lyrics
to go look it up. lost paper, week later found it, went on a two hour search for this freakin' song!!!
found it in a fan listed soundtrack list.

    Squeeze - Heaven Knows
    is the missing song!!!
so if anyone finds this listing upon their searches, this is where it ends. thank you fans!
