5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Collection.......2003-12-31

I have heard many, many classical "mood" collections, and this is one of the best, with many surprise selections.
It is consistently restful and calming.
I recommend it highly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars A tempting treasury, but only a few performances are great.......2007-02-03

Ten discs of Berlioz is a sumptuous offering, and temptingly cheap at Amazon Marketplace. DG has used this occasion to repackage some outstanding performances. At the top of the list goes James Levine's electrifying Requiem from Berlin, with playing and singing to match the conductor's inspiration. Also exciting--perhaps surprisingly so--is Abbado's Te Deum, which has rawer edges and sharper focus than Colin Davis's on Philips, long the standard version.

Dropping down a notch in quality, we have an elegantly played Romeo et Juliette by the Boston Symphony, superbly recorded, that has few rivals for refined virtuosity. But after a while Seiji Ozawa's approach seems to lack depth and meaning; he's skating over the surface of the musical drama, however brilliantly. Sharp and brilliant also describes Myung-Whun Chung's contribution, a Symponie fantastique, two overtures, and the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, all with his well-trained Bastille Opera orchestra. Chung is to the manner born in Berlioz, but so are greater conductors in these works, including Munch and Markevitch.

At about the same quality level I'd place the Mort de Cleopatre, a dullish early vocal scene sung with plushness by Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa's Les Nuits d'Ete, which is ravishing in terms of sheer vocalism but otherwise vacant. Daniel Barenboim's slack conducting does the piece no favors, either, which holds true on a much larger scale for his Damnation of Faust. This is a typical Barenboim product, full of lush sounds, excellent singing, big-scale orchestral work, but leading to a meager artistic payoff. Barenboim's Faust isn't remotely competitive with Markevitch, Chung, Solti, Pretre, and others in this work. It's great to hear Domingo in the title role, but the conducting is so routine that I'm not sure the overall experience is worth it.

We get odds and ends of varying quality: the rarely recorded Tristia done superbly by Boulez, an uneven batch of songs that previously appeared in their own double-CD set (a chore to listen to in its entirety, despite the occasional gem), and a pedestrain Harold in Italy conducted by Lorin Maazel in Berlin, a performance that DG surely could have bettered by looking deeper into their vaults.

In all, I can't see investing in such an uneven collection except at super-budget price. If you do a little searching, all the best things here can be gotten separately, and the lesser recordings pale by comparison with classic Berlioz from Colin Davis, Charles Munch, and Igor Markevitch.

5 out of 5 stars Berlioz with immaginative variety.......2003-10-30

This box makes a nice alternative to the Philips boxes under Colin Davis. Not to take anything away from Davis. His Berlioz cycle certainly ranks up there with the elite for recording achievements. But many will not want to invest in all 3 boxes, so Universal has brought us a great compilation of some of Berlioz' best works from a variety of performers with different styles.
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality. It seems cleaned up a little from what I remember of the CDs from the mid 80s; much more spacious, less muddy sounding. I especially like the chorus in the hushed night scene.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo; Yvonne Minto is probably not in the same class with the others, but she's more than acceptable.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum.
Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable, if not first-class.
The rest of the works are very commendable, if not top-of-the-class.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem.

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation album.......2005-03-16

The set includes 3 CDs - "Relaxing", "Vocals", and "Epic". The recordings are wonderful versions performed by excellent orchestras/singers. I listen to it on my Paradigm speakers and close my eyes and can feel encompassed by the music. The recordings do not have the flaws (hiss, pops, scratches) in the sound that many 'cheap' classical CDs have. For 3 CDs and the quality of the recordings, I found this album a good choice!

Acclaimed young flautist Emmanuel Pahud presents a program that contrasts two 20th-century French masters, Debussy and Ravel, with one Russian, Prokofiev. Debussy's Syrinx and La plus que lent are short, beguiling pieces, the first a languorous flute solo akin to Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, the second a dreamy piano waltz. Les Chansons de Bilitis is a delicately sensuous and mysterious six-part suite for piano and flute. The three Chansons Madécasses are Ravel's rarefied settings of folksongs from Madagascar; Katarina Karnéus sings with a beautiful disquiet, exploding into a tormented fury in "Aoua! Aoua!" What initially seems an unusual choice for a finale proves most apt, for it would be easy to mistake Prokofiev's Sonata No. 2 for further French sophistication. Light, eloquent, and playfully melodic, the deft interplay of Pahud's flute and Stephen Kovacevich's piano is far removed from the conventional associations of Russian music. --Gary S Dalkin

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A powerful collection.......2005-12-20

After a series of recordings including "Paris" and the Mozart flute concertos, Emmanuel Pahud has gained renown for the delicacy and silkiness of his tone. Consequently it was something of a surprise for me when i listened to this collection, in which Pahud is clearly exploring the darker sonorities of his instrument. The repertoire itself - including Debussy's Syrinx and an arrangement of his Billitis suite, Ravel's Chansons Madecasses and Prokofiev's flute sonata - is on the whole characterised by bleak, sinister, and often violent expression.

The really pleasurable and exciting thing about this recording is the way he draws out these sinister elements from the mentioned repertoire with a sense of poise and balance that holds everything in check. Thanks to Pahud's extreme (and highly French) musical sensitivity - and of course his dizzying technique - one never feels that he crosses the boundery into the excessive or melodramatic. Take for instance his performance of Syrinx: despite a very understated vibrato, a relatively restrained use of dynamics and a relaxed, spacious tempo, he nevertheless captures the intense despair and anguish belying Debussy's famous composition. Ravel's "Chansons madecasses" is, in my opinion, the highlight of the album, an exquisite display of all that is unique to Pahud's musicality: the interpretation of the first song, "Nahandove", is almost overpowering in its oddly seductive combination of restraint, clarity, tenderness and irony. The miraculous combination of performers solidifies this complex balance, each one aware of the need for unintrusive vibrato and phrases that gently caress as they wind their way through ravel's piquant harmonies. His performance of the prokofiev is similarly notable for its subtlety and tenderness, but, in the second and fourth movements, Pahud reveals his ability to produce explosive power throughout the range of the instrument, proving that, contrary to popular belief, the flute is more than capable of producing the violent, relentless expression this piece demands.

Still, this recording is not for everyone. It is not a collection of heart-rending, moving melodies, nor a whirlwind of emotional states, and certainly not a conventionally pretty, easy-listening affair. But it is subtle, ironic, seductive, deceptive, and witty. Pahud is to be praised for continuing to prove that the flute is an essentially French instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Continuously in Awe.......2000-07-20

He impressed you the first time; he'll knock your socks off this time. Emmanuel Pahud, Berlin Philharmonic's Swedish principal flutist, out-does even himself in his re-recording of Prokofiev's Flute Sonata in D, Op. 94, demonstrating matured ideas on the work. In his first recording, 1993, we were enchanted with his sound. We admired his technique. We envied his control. But this new version is pure magic; now we listen in sheer exhilaration. On both recordings, the opening movement displays that gorgeous expansive sound tempered by absolute control. It's not until the second movement, a scherzo, that Pahud's new ideas are reflected. He retains the same tempo from the first recording, but where it once seemed like the piece dictated Pahud's tempo and overall flow, now Pahud seems to invent the piece as he goes. Added nuances in the second version, such as elongating certain notes, contribute to the casual character of the movement. Then, like a surprise attack, he lets you know he means business. This is no ordinary sound. In fact, you may need to remind yourself that this powerful instrument making such bold statements is indeed a flute. Pahud completely controls the instrument throughout the four movements. Changing colors like a chameleon within and in-between movements, his sound first flows like liquid and then all at once pulls in rich overtones to create that fantastically edgy sound that flutists, like myself, fantasize about. The new recording quickens your pulse and leaves you speechless. It isn't just his incredible sound, or impeccable sense of timing, but also the confidence with which he plays demonstrating complete mastery of this music, that will elate you with each listening. Should the piece be retired then with this recording? Unfortunately, no. The one flaw is Pahud's new pianist. Sloppy. He is no Pahud.

    5 out of 5 stars "Hauntingly beautiful".......2000-06-14

I once used the expression "hauntingly beautiful" about some songs rendered by a vocalist in my region and he quoted those words out of context in his ads so it looked like I said them about him. Still I must use them about most of the EMI offering featuring the artistry of Emmanuel Pahud (flute), Stephen Kovacevich (piano), Truls Mork (cello), and Katarina Karneus (mezzo). Pahud, by the way, is the principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic as well as a much in demand soloist. As is growing common with some companies, there is no discernible official title but the catalogue number is 7243 56982-2.

The program starts with...well...hauntingly beautiful renditions of the Debussy pieces: "Syrinx" and "Bilitis," for flute and piano and the semi-satirical "La plus que lente" for piano solo. All four artists contribute to my first hearing of the enchanting set of Ravel's "Chansons madecasses; and we end with the lovely Prokofiev "Flute Sonata in D."

Analyses of the these works are briefly provided in the booklet, which also gives us the French and English texts of the Ravel songs. To this hearer, the playing and singing are excellent. A welcome addition to those troublesome collections that "have everything."

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.
