Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.

Buy it and enjoy!!!!
Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10
The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Solid Introduction to India's Master Musician.......2006-03-31
Disc 1: Out of the East (74:40)
Most of these tracks are ragas and are taken from his albums of the fifties and sixties. The most recent is "Dhun: Fast Teental" from 1967, the same year Shankar earned both the Billboard Recording Artist and Musician of the year honors. All tracks feature a small ensemble with Shankar accompanied only by tabla and tambura (and sarod on "Raga Palas Kafi)."
Disc 2: Into the West (78:29)
The tracks on this disc feature Shankar in collaboration with Western musicians. "Swara-Kakali" features famed violinist Yehudi Menuhin. "Discovery of India" is from the soundtrack album GHANDI, for which Shankar received an Oscar nomination for best score. There are two tracks from 1990's PASSAGES, which teamed Shankar with minimalist composer Phillip Glass. "Ragas in Minor Scale" features Shankar's ensemble playing a Glass composition, while "Offering" has Glass's ensemble performing a Shankar composition (the only track that Shankar does not perform on).
And, of course, it's only fitting that Shankar's most famous disciple be included. No fewer than three tracks feature George Harrison on autoharp: "Village Dance," "Memory of Uday" (Harrison also plays synthesizer on these two tracks), and "Friar Park." In addition, Harrison produced "Vandanaa Trayee."
This is a solid introduction to the music of India's best known musical ambassador. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is Perfect if You Want Just One Ravi Shankar CD.......2006-03-10
This CD, however, is truly made up of the best of Ravi Shankar. If you only wish to own one Ravi Shankar CD then this is for you.
The Sitar Master.......2006-03-04
Harrison declared Shankar the "Godfather of world music," as the back of the CD indicates, and this collection is a perfect testament to why that's true. While the form may not be to everyone's taste here in the West, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more affordable entree into--or a more skilled ambassador of--this beautiful musical heritage.
Excellent introduction to the legendary musician.......2006-02-04
This two-CD set is actually more thoughtfully compiled than I imagined. Among my favorite recordings of his would be the 1990 album "Passages" - a true desert island recording - with Phillip Glass (1937). I assumed that album was too esoteric to be represented here, but it is, by two selections on disc 2. Disc 1, entitled "Out Of The East", features mostly ragas, spanning the decade from 1957 - 1967, from notable albums such as "The Sounds of India" (1954), "The Genius of Ravi Shankar" (1957) and "India's Master Musician" (1963.) "Into The West" is the title of disc 2 and it's 13 tracks, not surprisingly, feature Shankar performing with the likes of violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999), George Harrison (1943-2001), guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and minimalist composer Phillip Glass.
I happen to like the traditional ragas but also the newer, easier-to-digest material, such as the George Harrison collaboration "Village Dance" from 1987's "Tana Mana."
At the beginning of disc 1, Ravi Shankar narrates a 5 minute introduction to Indian classical music and at the end suggests best how western listeners can enjoy it.
What I like about the music on disc 2 is, I will shamelessly admit, the ease of remembering the music and being able to identify it during subsequent listens. Some of the tracks have taken on a soundtrack feel to them, which will not please those who prefer traditional ragas.
By and large, you don't listen to Indian classical music hoping to get the same experience as you would from most other forms of music, including European classical music. You let yourself get lost in the experience, the journey, and forget about repetition and familiarity. You can listen to a 15 minute raga and hear something new each time. The music is too rich to be absorbed in one listening and there's no way you can pick up your instrument of choice and repeat the entire raga that you have just listened to. For those with a fertile mind, the melodies are truly heaven sent.
I'm always skeptical when record companies package compilations since they are rarely completely satisfying with their obvious omissions and inclusions of new but usually weak material. Columbia has tackled Ravi Shankar with a liberal representation of his works, but it won't necessarily please everyone. For those with broad tastes who are not Shankar experts, it's a great collection to have. Included in the liner notes is a brief but enjoyable article by Hank Bordowitz.

lady has a distinctive voice..........2007-07-01
I simply enjoy hearing the voice. No one out there sounds like Martha Davis...and
that's good enough for me.
Did I say I like the woman's delivery and phrasing?
If you love "Only The Lonely" you have to buy this CD!.......2007-01-27
Nobody can do it quite like The Motels........2005-11-03
"Only The Lonely"...which is my personal favorite and may be one of the most remembered..was absolutely one of the best songs straight out of the 80s. "It's like I told you..Only the lonely can play".
"Suddenly Last Summer"....as another user added, this was also a great song to come out of the 80s..I'd say it was the 2nd biggest hit of the band.
Other songs you might be vaguely familiar with.. "Shame" and "Remember the Nights". If you were EVER fan of the Motels, pick up this CD and get interested again! And if you aren't familiar with the band but you like other bands such as Quarterflash, Blondie, Berlin or Missing Persons..then check this out. You won't regret it!
Very good compilation of an underrated band.......2005-05-15
Unable to locate the 'No Vacancy' CD (it's apparently out-of-print), I purchased this compilation instead. It is very, very good - not great as I really prefer their later material over the earlier stuff.
Few vocalists can belt 'em out with the raw energy of Martha Davis - she's terrific, as is the rest of the band.
The music of the Motels has aged very well, and in a business overloaded with hype and hysteria, I can honestly say that this group is (for the most part) underrated. 'Suddenly Last Summer' is one of the best ballads to come out of the 80's, period.
Recommended, and well worth the price of admission.
Nice Collection But Still Missing Hot 100 Hits!.......2005-05-04
Notable Billboard Hot 100 entries are still missing!:
"Forever Mine" (#60 - 1982). Only it's b-side, "So L.A.", makes an appearance.
"Shock (7" Remix)" (#84 - 1985). Would have been nice to have this in remastered form on CD finally. Why it was left off again I'll never know.
Furthermore, including Martha Davis' lone charting solo single, "Don't Tell Me The Time" (#80 in 1987), could have been a possibility as well. Keep in mind that much of the Motels' back catalogue remains out of print, so these lost charting singles remain on those hard-to-find albums.
On the positive side, all tracks have been digitally remastered very nicely! The sound is breathtaking! That's the only real advantage of this collection and reason enough to buy it. However, instead of getting perhaps an even fresher remastering for 2005, the tracks appearing on the 2002 release, 'Classic Masters,' seem to have been placed directly on this collection with the same mastering, as evident by the 2002 publishing credits. I could be wrong, however, since Evren Goknar gets the mastering credit here instead of Robert Vosgien (on 'Classic Masters'). Regardless, the Motels have never sounded so good!
Unlike the 'Classic Masters' collection, the single versions of both "Shame" and "Total Control" are included. The latter track is nice having in it's edited form for a change even if I don't like how it was edited. It does get chopped quite a bit, removing many key parts of the track and going from 5:54 on 'Classic Masters' to 3:52 here.
I think the main problem with this so-called 'Essential Collection' is the failure to fill the disc with 79 minutes of music. There's easily enough room for at least another 6 tracks here. The disc only clocks in at just over 52 minutes of playing time! That leaves another 27 minutes of space! Capitol could have easily squeezed in those missing chart entries in addition to other radio/single highlights and b-sides. Even the gorgeous "Some Things Never Change" would have been a welcomed addition.
I suppose the label was trying to present something different to the 1990, solid yet flawed, 19-track 'No Vacancy - The Best Of The Motels' release. But this compilation simply comes across as inferior with the skimpy tracklisting and song choice. Perhaps it would have been best to have just reissued the now out-of-print 1990 collection with a slightly altered tracklisting -- including the Billboard Hot 100 entries "Forever Mine" and "Shock (7" Remix)" -- with a fresh 2005 remastering.
Overall, 5 stars for the remastering and 1 star for yet another poor attempt at compiling Motels' classics on disc again. Maybe next time Capitol will offer us all those charting singles on one disc?

The voices of angels!.......2006-01-11
This is really a journey on many levels, which is what an album should be. And the voices...I suppose I should complain that so many people buy commercial, souless stuff instead of this, but deep down I prefer to be the only one I know who has even heard of this group.
The female vocals on this are simply stunning, every last one of them. The pieces are not accessible in the same way that people expect from Celtic Music, there are no "Danny Boys" on this CD. All the music is transporting, demanding a little bit more time to appreciate all the different vocal colors, but at twice the price this has to be one of the albums of 2005.
For something even nicer try "Behind the Closed Eye" also available on amazon.
Amazing..........2005-06-17
I have been following this group since I was 11 years old (I am now 21 years old.) I cant fathom any other group keeping my attention for so long.
And why?
Because Michael's arrangements surpass time.He doesnt follow any strict rules of how choirs should sound and shouldnt sound...he pushes the line and arranges in such a way, that most logical directors would get flustered over.It makes sense and it sounds good yet strays from the path and norm of conventional choirs.Somehow Michael has mastered making his singers sound seamless...the men and women harmonize and sound as one.Something I have never heard a choir do,and know how hard it is to achieve something as that...being involved in classical choirs for 5 years+.
Ireland has a wealth of writers, poets, dancers, and musicians.I dont know how this country churns them out,but nonetheless Anuna is proof that theres something in the water.
Another point to be made...is where the material is found.Michael combs through libraries, anicent texts, church music, etc.Reading his linear notes for songs...you feel like you're getting the untold history lesson of cultures long forgotten and an Ireland you wont see on St.Patrick's Day.
I had the chance this past March to attend Anuna's second tour of the U.S. in NY at a pub (the most unlikely place to see a choir, but I wouldnt have changed it.) I had waited for 10 years to see this, and it was worth the wait and more. The first two songs,I didnt breathe...I sat there, watching the singers proceed throughout the pub and I sat there with my eyes shut at times not exhaling until they took stage. The stage presence of the group was extraordinary.Being so use to performing in a choir where we had sheet music in our hands and the director standing in front of us...to actually see peoples' faces light up and see how much they thoroughly enjoyed singing (and at times singing in their own native tongue as Anuna showcases alongside Latin and English.)was such a blessing! John McGlynn led the choir, and taking some very funny introductions to songs and making the audience feel like it was more at a concert in their living room amongst family than at a pub.
This is an amazing cd if you havent checked out Anuna before..you get a sample of everything.Try out the tracks...August,Deep Dead Blue,Kyrie, and Blackthorn.A few of my faves!

More than 40 years on, the Chieftains are still the world's nonpareil Irish acoustic instrumental outfit. While celebrated for the international dissemination of their national mother lode they have actually promoted music from all six Celtic Nations; beginning with Ireland (Eire) but also honoring ancient folkways from Scotland (Alba), the Isle of Mann (Ellan Vannin), Brittany (Breizh), Wales (Cymru), and Cornwall (Kernow.) Furthermore, they have sought out musicians from other Celtic enclaves, such as Galicia (Northern Spain,) Cape Breton Island (Nova Scotia -- one of North America's few Gaelic-speaking regions) and the Southern U.S., where haunting modal tunes imported by mountain-dwelling Scots-Irish immigrants provided the essence of old-timey country and bluegrass music. There have also been pop-star collaborations and a myriad of concept, live-in-concert and tribute albums. The set includes excerpts from the thoroughly traditional "numbered" albums that made the group's reputation but also covers their pan-Celtic explorations, duets with stars of other genres, including Bela Fleck, Nanci Griffith, Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos, plus encounters with notable Irish performers like Sinéad O'Connor, Van Morrison, and The Corrs. It is obviously impossible to encapsulate such a long and varied career, even over the length of two generously-filled disks, but this well-picked program gives an accurate picture of the band's astonishing scope and virtuosity. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

An excellent overview of Ireland's most famous band that isn't U2.......2006-03-16
Celebrating a remarkable 40-year career.......2006-03-11
Produced by Jerry Rappaport and band founder Paddy Moloney, the compilation spans the band's history from roots to branches. The first disc boasts 18 tracks from the Chieftains' extensive solo career, while the second provides 17 tracks from their numerous collaborations. Each track has been newly remastered from the original recordings to provide crystal-clear sound.
The very first track of disc 1, "Lots of Drops of Brandy" from the 2000 release Water from the Well, is the Chieftains at their prime. But as tracks progress, from 1977 to 2006, from 1992 to 1978, it quickly becomes clear that the Chieftains were always at the top of their game. Their musicianship is flawless, their arrangements clever and diverse, their devotion to Ireland's native music never in doubt.
But even in the band's solo albums, the Chieftains continued reaching out to other cultures with their music. "Full of Joy" seamlessly blends Irish sounds with a Chinese ensemble in 1987, while famed Spanish instrumentalist Carlos Nunez adds a Galician sound to the mix on 1996's "Santiago de Cuba." Within Ireland's borders, they joined forces with the excellent players of Altan for "The Donegal Set."
Samples from disc 2 include recordings with the Corrs, Van Morrison, Bela Fleck, Sinead O'Connor, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstadt, Los Lobos, Sting, Elvis Costello and the Rankins. The music is diverse, but the quality is uniform. And the Chieftains' ability to find the common ground between various styles and cultural traditions is nothing short of remarkable.

Well Done Collection of Vivaldi Concertos.......2006-10-21
This is it then. Especially enjoy the mandolin concertos (two of them here) and the Two Cellos, as well as Holliger in Oboe work. Also, the Cum Sancto Spiritu is powerful and shows range of this tireless composer who influenced so many and still does. This is nice for someone looking to add a litte Vivaldi to their playing collection. Sheer enjoyment!
