A Love Affair: The Music Of Ivan Lins .......2007-04-02

I discovered this album because I'm a fan of Vanessa Williams, who contributes one track. Nicely produced with various performers and varied styles within the Brazilian jazz idiom.
Some real nice tunes and renderings.
One of the highlights for me, not surprisingly, is Vanessa's offering, "Love Dance," which is a killer ballad, delivered with such delicacy and grace as only Vanessa can. A stunning track. Worth the price of the CD, alone.

I could not think of a song of Ivan Lins when I heard 'She Walks This Earth" sung by Sting. This song sells the CD and as for me....It was worth the purchase. After that, I could'nt get into it as much as I tried. All the artist on the CD were wonderful. It's just not a CD that requires listening to, with passion, more than once or twice. Sting....YES. Perhaps it's over my head and I need to listen again.

Five BEAUTIFUL Stars! Ivan Lins is Wonderful!! "Cantando Historias" ("Singing Stories") is a brilliant CD collection of updated Lins' classics. This world famous Brazilian composer, singer, and pianist continues to grow in stature and success a full three decades after his start. This electrifying CD, recorded live in Rio De Janeiro, is an instrumental and vocal gem that drops us in the middle of an enthusiastic audience that can't help singing along. Singing complete verses, no less.

The CD was the surprise of the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards, taking the overall "Album of the Year", a first for a Portuguese singing artist. It also won the "MPB Album" Latin Grammy. The singing is in wonderful Portuguese, but the beautiful, powerful music will sweep you away without the need for translation. I speak no Portuguese and I love this music. There are also special guests on this CD: a smoldering performance by Simone (sporting a fetching short hairdo as seen on the CD insert), Jorge Vercilo in great form, and the elegant Zizi Possi, who add their special flair to this live performance.

My favorites, 'Pieces D'Resistance', are the joyous CD opener "Abre Alas" (Clear The Area), the beautiful gentle samba "Porta Entreaberta" (The Half-Opened Gate), Zizi Possi in duet with Ivan on the heartfelt "Bilhete" (Ticket), and the senusous Simone/Lins duet on "Comecar de Novo" (New Beginning, aka The Island). In addition, "Guarde nos Olhos" with Lins and Jorge Vercilo is spellbinding, as are classics "Madalena", "Dinorah, Dinorah", "O Tempo Me Guardou Voce" and a rocking "Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai". Five HUGE Stars!!

For new fans, Ivan is known outside of Brazil chiefly for a slew of his famous compositions which have attracted major artists, including the Grammy winning song "Velas" ('Sails'), which was beautifully recorded by Quincy Jones with Toots Thielemans; "Love Dance" (Lembranca) by Dianne Schurr and Vanessa Williams, "Before It's Too Late" (Antes Que Seja Tarde) by the Manhattan Transfer, "The Island" (Comecar de Novo) by Sarah Vaughn and Barbra Streisand, the huge Elis Regina hit "Madalena" which Ella Fitzgerald fell in love with and recorded, "She Walks This Earth" (Soberana Rosa) by Sting, and "Dinorah, Dinorah", which was recorded by jazz man George Benson and Elis Regina. Whew!!

(Note: "Guarde nos Olhos" and "Desesperar Jamais" (Never Despair) are not shown in the Track Listing, but they are on the CD as Track 2 and 5, respectively. The songs "Aos Nossos Filhos" (To Our Children") & "Cartomante" are merged on Track 6; "Vieste" (You Came) & "Iluminados" (Illuminated) are merged on Track 10. All of which yields 14 great tracks. the music included in these disks are just top notch. however, having seen the programs on PBS, i regret that the producer did not include the entire program (inclusive of interviews with artists) on an extensive DVD/CD compilation. this DVD/CD is at best a tip of the iceberg compared with what is shown on PBS.

caution. for jazz fan who is also into HDTV, the HD DVD is a problem. the disk box states as 16X9 HD but the image does not fill up a typical 16x9 HDTV screen like the original boardcast. rather the DVD produces the image in letter box format. this is disappointing/. so, if you expect to see a true DVD in HD format filling up your 16x9 HDTV screen, the DVD disk will not meet your needs. however, if this is the least of your concern, this is the DVD/CD set you must own.

note to producer. please release the ENTIRE program in box DVD/CD set and fix the 16x9 dvd format. i will love to own this. thanks.

Ivan still going on strong.......2007-03-12

Yes, just like the previous reviewer, is unfortunate (and I don't even know why this great CD is not available in the US market; apparently only available in Brasil and Mexico) that after almost a year this CD is still nowhere to be found in the north-american market.
However, going back to the CD, this is a very enjoyable/pleasent CD by Ivan (the second most-recorded composer from Brasil after Tom Jobim);still combining jazz-tinged tunes and exploring back some of his samba roots. Songs like "Passarela No Ar", "Ela E A Propria Vida" and "Renata Maria" are total knock-outs.

Acariocando-TEN stars.......2007-03-07

I've been a fan of Ivan Lins since the Love Dance album (1989) and the fabulous AWA YIO. Unfortunately, what little of Ivan's music made it to the radio airwaves disappeared with the mechanical format of "Lite Jazz". So Lady Luck was smiling the day that I happenened on the Grammy award winning "Cantando Historias". But as wonderful as that CD is, the reality is that it just made me hungry for more Ivan music. So when a co-worker informed me that he was going to Brazil in the summer of 2006, I begged him to find me some Ivan CD's and he came back with Acariocando. LITERALLY from the first track "A gente merecer ser feliz", I was in Heaven! Listen to it and you will be transported too!

The proof is that whenever I play this CD at work, people always ask me what I'm listening to. The big problem is that nobody has any way to get their hands on a copy of this CD, short of flying to Brazil. It's not available on iTunes, and so far I haven't found a retail outlet carrying it. Sorry folks, I'm not about to let my copy out of my sight!!!

In writings about Elis Regina she said Lins was one of her favorite composers. Now I can see why.I found that as soon I listened to the first track I knew I had a good find. I can't say that about many. Hopefully, I'll be as fortunate in my pursuit of some good music.

This music is so far ahead of anything in the world that is related to rock and jazz. This is one CD, after 12 years, that I do not tire of. I keep on hearing new things. The music is fabulous. It may take a couple of listenings to grasp it but once you get the hang of it, you will play it again and again. It is full of passion, beauty and emotion. Unfortunately, it will raise your standards and make most other related music sound dull.

Ivan the Sublime!.......2005-03-06

First of all, I have to confess I never review anything I would not give five stars to. I see these "reviews" as opportunities to share the pleasure I have taken in music that has moved me sufficiently to wish to share that pleasure with others. I doubt very much anyone is interested in why I didn't like something, so I'll leave that task to those don't harbor such doubts.

Which brings me to Ivan Lins, a musician whom I have come to regard as a dear friend, notwithstanding the considerable disadvantage of never even having seen him perform live. Recently when some friends of mine suffered a terrible tragedy, I had this CD sent to them because of what I feel to be its transcendently life-affirming-without-being-saccharine quality.

O Melhor de Novo Tempo is a wonderful introduction to the work of an artist I regard with a reverence similar to that I feel for Tom Jobim. Like Tom he hasn't got a great voice, but he still manages to be a distinctive interpreter of his songs. And so far as I'm equipped to judge, he's a very fine keyboard player. But it is as a composer that he truly shines. He writes music that engages, deeply and on multiple levels, music that is sometimes joyful, sometimes wistful, but never less than heartfelt. In testament to which I can cite numerous jazz players of the highest stature who have worked with him or covered his material. (Including a highly recommended 1996 collaboration with Terence Blanchard, The Heart Speaks).

His composition Comecar de Novo is one of those works that truly puts the "dei" in "vox pop." Meaning no one, not even the composer, will ever manage the definitive treatment (though, on second thought, Simone's cover comes pretty close to deserving that accolade). Madalena is one of the best and most high-spirited (if you'll forgive the vulgarity) "blue ball" anthems this particular oft-rebuffed lover has ever heard. "Dinorah Dinorah" suggests the sort of woman that, like the source of that fugitive whiff of perfume in an empty hallway, you wish you might have encountered in person. And listening to Daquilo que eu sei, I'm simply happy to be alive.
