It's been a long wait for the solo debut from Irish icon Dolores O'Riordan. After all, the Cranberries issued their swan song in 2001. After their break up, O'Riordan collaborated with Germany's Jam and Spoon, Italy's Zucchero, and David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti. She also appeared, as herself, in the 2006 comedy Click. All the while, she toiled away on her first solo effort. Fortunately, good things come to those who wait. Co-produced by Youth (the Verve, U2), Are You Listening? is a throwback to 1980s-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sinead O'Connor--sweeping keyboards, forceful drumming, and muscular guitar work. It may seem like a melodramatic move, but the music never overwhelms the slight yet steely figure at the center of the maelstrom, particularly on the lilting "Ordinary Day" and haunting "Black Widow." Cranberries fans expecting something more demure may be taken aback, but O'Riordan's supple voice should win over most skeptics. And lyrically, she compensates with tender words inspired by her husband ("Apple of My Eye"), the death of her mother-in-law ("Black Widow"), and the birth of her youngest child ("Ordinary Day"). --Kathleen C. Disappointing album bordering on BORING........2007-07-19

I have been a Cranberries fan since the first time I heard their music. Dolores O'riordan's voice was simply magical. Listening to her singing always sent chills up my spine and gave me a buzz. Her original, intense, and emotional voice was a saving grace to much of the junk music that overwhelms us today. I was heartbroken to learn that the Cranberries split and went on to individual projects, but as long as Dolores was still singing, I'd surely be buying. And then she gives us "Are You Listening?" And well......What happened???!

She told us her solo album would be something different from anything she's ever done before. Something more .... AHEM... "experimental" (very overused word in the music industry and hardly applicable considering so much pop garbage sounds alike). Well, Dolores, where's the originality in this album? This album is much more < > POP sounding than her previous work with the Cranberries. The musical originality is absent from most of the songs. It sounds like she uses typical pop arrangements, sounds, and tricks and as a result the album sounds like very all-purpose, generic pop music with Dolores O'riordan's voice sing the predictable rhyming lyrics. Very uninspired music.

Dolores does quite a bit of whisper (breathy) singing on this album. Usually when I hear that I think of a singer who's vocals aren't as strong as they used to be and who literally CAN'T sing crisply, clearly, or as strong as before. I hope that's not the case with Dolores' voice, but all the whisperings on this album make for a weak sounding voice. An annoyance when I'm eagerly waiting for her to just SING.

As for the lyrical content, Dolores continues to sing about the same subjects - her children, her husband (and her love and/or desperate need for him in her life), her other family & loved ones, people who put her down (remember the song "Loud and Clear"? well, she still sings defensively to people who hurt her and this time it's in the song "Loser"), and her efforts to evolve and grow as a human being. Dolores' lyrics tend to be simply put and straightforward. I've always like that. Listening closely to her lyrics give me the impression that she is still trying to find herself and climb out of a dark, murky something that is taking up more than enough space in her life.

I find most of the songs plain, uninspired and very forgettable. There are some standouts, namely BLACK WIDOW and OCTOBER. Black Widow is a song she wrong while going through the death of her Mother-in-law from cancer. She sings the song passionately and with a little creative use of her voice. It is heavy on the electronic musical *help* though. I wonder how the acoustic version would sound. OCTOBER is another song that I really liked at first. When I heard it the band Linkin Park came to mind. This one sounds like a Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" song. Meaning, "I may be down but I'm not OUT!" It's a You Go Girl! song and I have a soft spot for those.

My biggest complaint with this album is that Dolores just doesn't sound very alive when she's singing. I don't mind that she sings about the same topics. She could be singing about her cornflakes cereal for all I care. But sing it like it's the best stuff you've ever tasted and every bite tastes absolutely wonderful and puts you in 7th heaven! That kind of energy is missing from this album. Maybe Dolores went the way of some other artists (Tori Amos, Sinead O'connor, Alanis Morrisette to name a few) would could sing beautifully and with such raw passion when they were angry or unhappy, but somehow lost some of that spark when intense dark emotions left them. Can't they be just as intense when they're happy?

Dolores hasn't done a complete 360 (a la Sinead O'connor) with her voice, it still sounds great. But in this album it's sounding a little more flat and dull. Not a bad effort for her first solo album, but I hope for a better sophmore solo album. Buy it and listen for yourself.

What a great debue solo album. I found the first half of the album awsome some of the second half dropped off a bit, but over all a great album. If you like the cranberries I think you will really like this.

A different style in the wonderful voice of Dolores.......2007-07-16

Even though there are bad comments for this album, as a Cranberries fan I think this CD is AWESOME!!! It's logical that Dolores try to make something different than the songs from the Cranberries. This new album shows that Dolores has everything to succeed!!! With a totally new style this album shows the taste of music that Dolores Has. All the songs in the album are wonderful!! My favourites, Ordinary Day, When we were young, Angel Fire, Apple of my eye, Black Widow, Loser, ALL OF THEM!!!

Here in Mexico, there's no too much promotion of this album, but I think that it has to have that promotion because it's a really masterpiece. This album combines new rythms, sounds and types of music that makes you imagine a lot of wonderful things. And the best part, the voice of Dolores... She has the most wonderful voice in this planet.

EVEN without the Cranberries, this album is so rich who needs them!? I also love her as always unique voice that can easily be recognized! EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM IS GREAT! That is a rarity these days!

It arrived in less than a week and in good condition. The music is a bit different than that of the Cranberries but to me it still does it. Dolores is a very talented artist and any real fan should have in their collection this cd!

Great Band.......2007-04-14

Here is a band that had alot of hits.This is a good collection of their songs.My favorite tunes from this band are You Really Got Me and All Day and All of the Night.Another huge hit from this band was Lola.
The Davies brothers, along with drummer Mick Avory and bassist Peter Quaife, produced a number of hits.

They Really Got Me!.......2007-01-23

Okay, I remember the British Invasion. This is one of those cd's you can either listen to in context of the times or as a great primer for the rest of their stuff. I've found myself listening to it repeatedly and I can still pretty much tell you where I was when the Ray and Dave were kicking out the hits. Like one of the reviewers said, there may be a track or two that I personally would have included but blast it all, this is a primo collection and as long as I can listen to "Waterloo Sunset", I am in paradise! Don't hesitate to pick this collection up! It doesn't get much better than this!

Possibly the best collection of any band.......2006-12-16

While hard core fans might find a favorite track or two missing, I, as a casual fan, can't think of a single worthy song that does not appear on this double disc set. There are even a couple great songs that I had never heard before. The Ultimate Collection covers the entire career of the band, with a couple solo numbers by Dave Davies thrown in for good measure.

Whoever put this set together deserves congratulations.

Three albums into Tegan & Sara's career, it's still somehow necessary to get a couple of facts about them out of the way before diving into their latest offering. They are, yes, identical twin lesbians, and they do occupy the space--more like a vacuum, really--between the riot-grrl menace of Sleater-Kinney and the un-fun folk of Indigo Girls. That out of the way, So Jealous is the duo's best disc yet, meriting more than the mainstream notice that has so far evaded it. All the components are in place: a beyond synthy, full-throttle band, including John Collins and David Carswell of New Pornographers, and songwriting so honest as to make a person--any person--check to make sure no one has been snooping in her diary ("I won't mistake you for problems with me/I won't let my moods ruin this you'll see," from "I Won't Be Left"). The vibe is early-80s pop-punky (Tegan & Sara's singing can sound like Missing Persons' minus the squeals) spiked with a rock'n'roll edge--if the title track were noisier, it might sound at home on a Yeah Yeah Yeahs disc. Destined for hugeness, if only in indie circles for now, Tegan & Sara provide something crucial for pop princesses to be So Jealous of, and that's genuine talent. --Tammy La Gorce

Amazing CD...AMAZING!.......2007-07-06

Honestly you will be singing almost every song on this CD driving to work, taking a shower, or cooking a meal. This CD is a great CD, every track is not only listenable, but very enjoyable. The title track "so jealous" might take an extra one or two listens to enjoy, but every other song is a flawless transfer into the other. You listen to the whole CD, and when its over, you just hit play again. Pop the CD in your computer, and watch a video of tegan and sara in the studio making the the CD. Sit back, relax, and listen to two canadian twin sisters making amazing catchy songs. Not Great but So Good.......2007-04-12

I love these girls and apparantly I'm not the only one as their songs keep popping up on TV shows and commercials. That's not to say that Tegan & Sara are selling out, I just think today's television producers are a tad more hipper than they used to be. So Jealous actually came out a few years ago but it's taken me this long to decide I had to have it. The album isn't as consistently enjoyable as If It Was You, their last effort but where So Jealous is good, it's very good. The opening "You Wouldn't Like Me" with its chugging guitar and the self loathing lyrics are typical T&S. So Jealous takes all of the greatness that is the sisters and keeps the momentum going. The ambiguous misery of the lyrics is so catchy and enjoyable you can't help but sing and strut along. "Take Me Anywhere" , "Where Does The Good Go" and the single "Walking With A Ghost" are just as good as anything on If It Was You. The grinding guitars, hip drum beats and the awesome harmonies and vocals are a nice distraction from anyone's own problems. Let's hope Tegan & Sara get back to the studio very soon. And if you haven't yet discovered these girls get yourself a copy now!

My Favorite CD of 2004.......2007-03-30

This is an astonishingly good album, resembling a greatest hits package more than a general release. Tegan has one of the most original-sounding voices.

"You Wouldn't Like Me" really blows me away: beginning with some six-string strumming and just a single voice, the song builds up until in the end it resembles a pop triumph.

The great thing about Tegan & Sara is that they come up with great melodies and then stay on melody. No extra trills or frills.

The contributions from New Pornographers' members just make this disc all the more interesting.

If you like more obscure folk pop, the kind you just might not hear while shopping at your favorite natural health foods store, you owe it to yourself to search this out.

Simply Outstanding.......2007-07-17

This CD has to be the #1 Gospel CD so far for 2007. It is very seldom that you get 14 out of 14 songs on a CD to listen to which are this good - this CD is one of them. Every single cut is uplifting, dynamic, and appeals to your gospel music senses.

My advice, if you don't have this CD, listen to the samples, then get it as soon as you can - you will be glad you did!!!

It's About Time!!!!!.......2007-07-01

I've been blessed for years by the preaching ministry of Bishop Noel Jones and have always been anticipating the album debut of his choir(whom I'd only heard at a glance via his television broadcast and on his documentary, the Hoover Street Revival). This album has been a long time coming and since purchasing it I can't put it down...strong classics for those of the Gospel persuasion, praise and worship persuasion, and even of the reggae persuasion. And in addition to highly anointed contributions of members of his praise team and choir, the project features cuts with Donnie Mcclurkin, Deitrick and Damita Haddon. Wow. If you want a little extra you may want to purchase the Wal-mart version that features a free dvd(videos and the sermon, "Focus" by Bishop Jones). If you've been blessed by the releases of Bishop Jakes & the Potter's House Mass Choir, Bishop Eddie Long and the Total Praise Mass Choir, and others...the debut of Bishop Noel Jones & the City of Refuge Sanctuary Choir is a must have. I know where I'll be churchin' whenever I visit the City.

Awesome, this cd is one of the best gospel cd's, or any genre, I've heard in a while. Great worship and praise in combo with great beats, energy, and encouraging lyrics that will uplift the soul.

If you enjoy Good Gospel Music & buying a CD where every song is a blessing then I would strongly suggest "Welcome to the City". I have never Purchased a CD where I enjoyed Every Song until now. This Choir is truly anointed. God Bless.

Great overview of the Kinks' tenure on Pye.......2006-03-16

"The Singles Collection" is a great survey of the Kinks' singles on Pye Records, including initial Beatles facsimiles (including awkward "woo!" falsetto), successful forays into hard rock ("You Really Got Me" has been called the first heavy metal song) and psychedelia ("See My Friends" showcases this little-known aspect of the band), and finally the quirky social commentary that they're probably best known for today ("Well Respected Man," "Dead End Street," and numerous other gems).

This compilation covers the albums from the debut "Kinks" through "Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround Part One," but a substantial portion of these tracks were standalone singles. That means that this collection hardly tells the whole story-- in fact, important albums like "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" and "Arthur or The Decline and Fall of the British Empire" are barely represented at all. But it also makes this disc a valuable resource for excellent non-album tracks like "Set Me Free" and "Autumn Almanac" that can be hard to find elsewhere with such crisp sound quality.

I recommend this compilation to Kinks newbies and hardcore fans alike, because it's both a competent primer on the band's first decade as well as a great source for some hard-to-find music. Just be sure you also pick up the albums, at least from "Face to Face" onward, to get the full picture of this indispensable band.

Best Kinks Collection.......2006-01-23

George Starostin could not give the Kinks a perfect 5 on his classic rock review site (a great site!: starling.rinet.ru/music) because the Kinks lacked a "perfect" album, where every song was incredible, not just good. Arthur came close for him, but not quite. However, I believe this is the "perfect" Kinks album, even though I prefer their released albums. This is not a greatest hits compilation, just a singles compilation, the equivalent to the Beatles' Past Masters. This album has all of their singles from '64 - '71 I believe, and every song is great! The Ultimate collection offers more, but if you're new to the Kinks, start with this colection that captures their golden years. If you love this, move to the albums. You should not be disappointed with this collection. Some beautiful stuff.

All the sixties classics.......2004-09-02

This compilation covers the period 1964 to 1971 - the stuff that really matters. The same label has released a double CD compilation tit1led Ultimate collection, which covers their later music as well. If you want their later hits, including Come dancing, that is the collection you should go for.

This contains all the classic sixties songs including You really got me, All day and all of the night, Tired of waiting for you, Dedicated follower of fashion, Well respected man, Sunny afternoon, Waterloo sunset, Autumn almanac, Days, Lola and Apeman. It also includes Dave's two solo UK hits - Death of a clown and Susannah's still alive.

The set is presented in chronological order beginning with their cover of Long tall Sally, a song that demonstrates their musical roots in R+B. They didn't stick to R+B for very long, becoming more of a mainstream pop group and continually changing their style thereafter. Nevertheless, their songs were always distinctive because of Ray's talent for making ordinary situations into extraordinary songs. My favorite Kinks song is Waterloo sunset, a huge UK hit but not an American hit. It is about romance at a railway station that I am familiar with, though I cannot possibly imagine what inspired Ray to write that song, but he was a genius.

The best tribute to the quality of their songs lies in the diversity of the covers that have been recorded by singers in several genres of music. Despite the brilliance of some of the covers, here you get the chance to hear the original versions. If you just want a single CD of their sixties music, this one is as good as any you will find.

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.

My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!

Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.

Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24

The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.

i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

Ray Davies Hits His Stride.......2007-04-18

This was the first album of the Kinks' new era. Ironically, it was also this album that contained their last big international hit of the '60's --"Sunny Afternoon." Although it contained a couple of their simple love songs from their earlier era, likely put there to fill out the tracks, the strength of the album is in the social commentary and personal observations of the rest of the songs.

When I bought the album in 1966, "Party Line" (a Ray & Dave composition) intrigued me. I remember party lines, but few people, at least in the US do. Dave's line "Is she big/ Is she small?/ Is she a she at all?" could just as well apply to e-mail or IM today, though. The voice asking who was there belonged to the late Frank SMyth, who wrote the liner notes. I was hooked after "Rosie Won't You Please Come Home," a song about the Davies' sister Rose who emigrated to Australia. Nicky Hopkins' harpsichord laid over the bands decending arpeggio just bounced along and Ray's slightly off-key singing captured my imagination, and I was a Kink Kultist from then on.

"Session Man" is about session musicians, supposedly specifically Hopkins. "Rainy Day in June is a mood piece, the motfs of which popped up later in "Wicked Annabella." "Dandy" (covered by Herman's Hermits, of all people), "House in the Country," "Most Exclusive Residence for Sale," and "Sunny Afternoon" completed the story of the social climber started with "Well-Respected Man" and "Dedicated Follower of Fashion." "Holiday in Waikiki" is more than slightly snide and basically Ray venting about commercialism in paradise. Reminds me of the line "American tourists love to see the Village Green" from "Village Green." "Little Miss Queen of Darkness" was a forlorn figure Ray met in a discotheque, sort of Lola's ancestor. This album really established Ray as the voice of the Kinks, and they never looked back. Ray wrote "You're Looking Fine" for Dave to rave on, and Dave still does it in his live shows. That one really jumps in the "Live at the Kelvin Hall" show from 1967.

The extras do round out the Kinks' saga in this era. These songs were relased on the compilations "Kinks Kronikles: and "The Great Lost Kinks Album," but it's nice to have them here. The magnificant "I"m Not Like Everybody Else," which was "Sunny Afternoon's" B-side, and two great singles from 1967: "Dead End Street"/ "Big Black Smoke" and "Mister Pleasant"/ "This is Where I Belong." (I have these singles in my collections.) "Mr. Reporter," written by Ray and sung by Dave for his projected solo album is listed as unreleased but it had appeared on Dave's "Unfinished Business" compilation. "Little Women" is a new find.

Ray hit his stride with this one. From "Face to Face" (1966) through "Everybody's in Show Biz" (1972) they put out albums full of insightful, great bopping rock.

A Great Transition.......2007-03-31

The Kinks were adequate with the hard rock n' roll, but they came into their own with Face to Face. Ray Davies combined a few Brit pop styles with his own eccentric commentary. The band is great, and they have fun developing their form until their next album, Something Else, which is, in my opinion, their absolute best.

'Face to Face' is the reason I love the Kinks! This may not be their greatest album, but it is my favorite lp by the Brothers Davies and will always hold a special place in my heart. This is what England sounds like! English culture, the people, the pubs, the disenfrancised, the mods and the upper crust. I heard this record first in college and was immediately hooked though "Sunny Afternoon" was the only 'classic' that I knew of before hearing the album in total. How many songs am I in love with from this lp, one of a slew of incredible rock albums released in 1966? Well before 'Face to Face', the Kinks were a hard rocking British Invasion band that had single success but whose albums were not fully realized collections of songs. 'Kink Kontroversy' was a step in the right direction but even this very good album pales in comparison to 'Face to Face'. "Too Much on My Mind" and "Rosie" break my bleeding heart!.."Party Line" and "Dandy" pump me up on British pomposity and the lifestyles of Swinging London. "Fancy" and "Holiday in Wakiki" are awesome in their unconventionality. Ray Davies was in many ways comparable to Bob Dylan in his social observations, especially as he describes many of the characters in this pseudo concept album - which as some reviewers have commented could be the continuing saga of the "Well Respected Man" although on "Face to Face", he is fast losing his shirt ("Dandy", "House in the Country", "Most Exclusive" and of course "Sunny Afternoon"). Dave only belts out "Party Line" and "You're Looking Fine", the later could be seen as something from previous records. The remastered version includes the classic B side to "Sunny", the Dave droned "I'm Not Like Anybody Else" which is now featured in an American advertisement (IBM?), how's that for respect! "Dead End Street", "Big Black Smoke" and "Mr. Pleasant" (is he the "Dandy's" victim?) all feature on this amazing collection of Ray Davies gems. It is absolutely criminal that this record was barely released in the States and had paltry sales figures. Classic rock fans need the Kinks and "Face to Face" which began a run of music that celebrates the genius of the boys from Muswell Hill.

Ray's drastically improving..........2007-02-08

The Kinks are getting serious here and are an equal here to that "other" British pop group. Ray Davies creates an ode to British working class and this is part 1 of his 3 album trilogy. Face to Face, Something Else and Village Green may be the best albums British invasion band has ever produced that speaks to the common man and that includes those other 4 guys from Liverpool.

The Kinks Weren't Like Anybody Else.......2006-10-25

Face To Face was the first of several albums that would eventually earn The Kinks their rightful place among The Beatles, The Stones, and The Who as one of the most revered and influential English bands of the 1960s. The fact that they were the least commercially successful of these bands made them more of a personal favorite to rock fans than the darlings of screaming teenagers. Since The Kinks were nothing if not quirky, they were probably willing to trade financial rewards in order to secure their own niche among the somewhat congested world of 60s rock music.

The record starts off with "Party Line", a rocking tale of daily minutiae. While sly social commentary had popped up in previous Kinks songs (eg, "Well-Respected Man", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"), this tune shows Ray Davies taking "think globally, act locally" to a bit of an extreme. (Was this really a good enough reason for him to not be "voting in the next election"?!) Other straight-ahead rockers on the album include "Dandy", "Session Man", "A House In the Country", "Most Exclusive Residence For Sale", and the inspired, tongue-in-cheek "Holiday In Waikiki". This handful of songs alone demonstrates Ray's wide range of topical interests: swinging bachelors, under-appreciated musicians, insufferable millionaires, and fish-out-of-water Englishmen. Just as Ray's social commentary was flourishing, so was his introspection. This is also strongly felt on Face To Face, as on the heartfelt pleas of "Rosie Won't You Please Come Home?", the plaintive "Too Much On My Mind", and the vivid, funereal contrast of "Rainy Day in June", the biggest downer on the record. There are also the old-fashioned ditties "Little Miss Queen of Darkness", "You're Lookin' Fine", and "I'll Remember", the George Harrison-esque "Fancy", and "Sunny Afternoon", their last major US hit single until they resurfaced in the top 10 four years later.

Simply put, Face to Face is a remarkably rich collection of songs. It is accessible and listener-friendly, but challenging and deep as well. Dave Davies' buzzsaw guitar riffs are nowhere in sight, and Ray does more that simply shout out the same few lyrics for 3 minutes. The lyrical and musical variety is very impressive, including the ivory tickling by Nicky Hopkins, the ultimate Session Man. This album is a far cry from the cookie-cutter, hodge podge records of the early 60s (those by The Kinks included). And it is particularly amazing that bonus tracks like "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" - arguably the first punk song ever - "Dead End Street" (US #73), and "Big Black Smoke" were minor hit singles and B-sides that nevertheless sit comfortably among Ray's best work.

It is disheartening to know that while the their peers were reaching the tops of the charts between 1966 and 1969, The Kinks were barely making a dent in them. (The Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur didn't even chart in the UK.) And yet their albums were at least as ambitious, consistent, and enjoyable as anything by these other bands. Four decades on, the fact that so few people have heard this music makes it all the more fresh to the newcomer's ears. Face To Face was the first of four records in four years that would snowball into what may be the richest body of work to come out of the UK or US in the late 1960s. Thankfully, it has proven to be hugely influential on subsequent generations, such that this record and its follow-ups can be said to be the bedrock for the entire spectrum of Britpop, from The Jam, to The Smiths, to Blur and Pulp.

Give me Face to Face over any other UK record from 1966 any old day of the week.

As the frontman for the Mavericks and a member of Los Super Seven, Raul Malo has applied his Orbison-like delivery to an eclectic array of material. On this, his latest solo effort, the warbler enlists veteran producer Peter Asher to focus on romantic balladry, as string-laden arrangements surround Malo's tremulous voice on the opening title track (a '70s hit for songwriter J.D. Souther) and the soaring "Feels Like Home" (reprised as the closer in a duet with Martina McBride). The song selection highlights Malo's vocal range, as he finds the bittersweet essence in a slowed-down rendition of the Everly Brothers' "So Sad," a dramatic reading of the Bee Gees' "Run to Me," and a lilting take on Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart." He even tackles Etta James's signature tune, "At Last," its jazzy, smoky sophistication punctuated by a trumpet solo. The cover of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" provides the album's main link to country, but even here the bedrock organ and soul choir sound closer to the church than the roadhouse. The stellar selection provides a superb showcase for Malo's shimmering voice. --Don McLeese

He leaves me speechless. I just discovered him a few months ago. He has the most unique, engaging voice and interpretive approach to music that I have heard in my lifetime. I am 60 years old and love all kinds of music. Comparing him to Frank Sinatra is an insult. He can sing rings around him and every one else ...What a talent.

Beautiful........2007-04-09

One could wax poetic about Raul Malo's voice, never doing it justice. His voice is amazing...whether he is singing a standard, rock, country, or Latin; he sings with grace, and infectious enthusiasm.
I highly recommend his two other solo efforts too. "Today" is so much fun! "Nashville Acoustic Sessions" just terrific.

Peter Asher's production is so "clean" nothing out of place or excessive. I hope Malo and Asher team up again soon.

Good, but overrated.......2007-07-15

Every classic band has an overrated album. And this is Motorheads. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad by any means, but I tend to think of as a middle of the pack album. It's better than thir debut album, but I personally think that both Overkill and Bomber, their two previous albums are better. Maybe Ace Of Spades is so highly acclaimed because it has their "classic" hit, Ace Of Spades. It's a great song certainly, (although I'm pretty sick of hearing it by now) but the rest of the album doesn't quite add up as a whole to truly earn the title of "Motorheads greatest". The production is sometimes atrocious, and has some of the worst "stereo" effects I've heard. In fact in frequently sounds as if it was recorded in mono.

Production issues aside, there are some some songs that frankly just aren't all that strong. Live To Win, Fast And Loose, Fire , Fire and Bite The Bullet are all quite mediocre (although there are some good good guitar solos scattered throughout these songs. Love Me Like A Reptile, Shoot You In The Back and The Cahse Is Better Than The Catch are all good songs, but not quite what I would call classic. In fact apart from Ace Of Spades the only songs that I would consider worthy of classic status are (We Are) The Raod Crew with it's locomotive pace and inspired guitar freak out finale, and The Hammer, a song that although good on the album, really is in it's own element in No Sleep Til Hammersmnith.

I enjoy Ace Of Spades for sure, as it does have some of Motorheads best moments,and captures their early youthful aggression and enthusiasm as opposed to their later grizzled veteran craftmanship but I really don't consider the entire album to be their best. If you have a desire to explore Motorhead then I think it's an album that you should hear, but in my opinion Bomber is better than this, and most of their 1990s releases are easily as strong as Ace Of Spades. I'm a huge fan of the band, but I sometimes think that some rock fans miss out by only buying "Motorheads best", and skip the rest of their catalog, assuming that it's all downhill from there.

If you only got one Motorhead CD, make it this one.......2007-06-07

This is the best quality Motorhead CD I have heard, and it is in my opinion better than the Overkill CD (supposed to be the best they did).

The Ace of Spades album rocks, and if you dont like this one, you will not likely like Moterhead. This album also is one of the series that Eddie Clark plays on. To me, he was the driving sound of Motorhead, and when they were a classic trio, he was the guitar player.

You cant go wrong with this one!

Cult classic that should be as big as .......2007-01-22

Motorhead share many qualities with another tried and true rowdy bunch of rockers, AC/DC. Unlike their Aussie counterparts, Motorhead never had the U.S. breakthrough that catapulted AC/DC into the mega-legends they are. Perhaps it's because Motorhead is still as caustic, bombastic and offensive as ever, meaning their signature album, "Ace Of Spades" is just too abrasive for radio, along with everything else they've ever done.
This, of course, is an injustice. The classic line-up of Lemmy Kilmister, Fast Eddie Clarke and Phil Taylor created several albums of such intensity and power that even after the inception of outfits like Exodus, Metallica, Sepultura and other heavyweights, Motorhead still sound heavy, loud and rude. No passage of time has been able to corrode or modify their attack. For that alone, they belong in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame.
"Ace Of Spades" is the high point of Motorhead. Producer Vic Maile gave this album a sound that throws you back against the wall and pins you there until the CD is finally over. The best part is, you want to stay trapped. Far better musicians than they ever wanted you to know they are, this album is full of hooks within the barrage, and Clarke's bluesy riffs and leads add style and form to the music, which allows it to not just run over your head over and over, but to actually swing a little, "Fast And Loose" being a good example.
"Bite The Bullet" is punk fast, and funny, too. "Fire, Fire" is as hot as the title and "The Hammer" leaves you in no doubt that what Lemmy says he'll do, he'll do it. No tough guy in lipstick and drag whipped posing for this guy. The three extras aren't quite as up to par as the original album, with the band ahem, joining Girlschool for a three song set that rock, but are timid compared to the rest of "Ace Of Spades".
Strong proof that loving your music and believing in it shows, as this and many other Motorhead gems are easily available, thanks to their loyal followers. Unlike some reviews that claim Motorhead won't attract new listeners, I disagree. This outfit is better known than ever, and my own nephews a generation behind me have begun to get into rock's gnarliest outfit.

Ace of Spades: Punk Rock Perfected.......2006-12-27

This album started a metal revolution (NWOBHM). Brutally fast, classic rock solos, intricate drumming, and Lemmy. Was there ever a doubt?

In my opinion, Motorhead also created the greatest punk rock albums ever: Ace of Spades (1980) and its LIVE counterpart, No Sleep Til Hammersmith (1981).

The energy of this album is hard to describe. It makes me feel so powerful when I listen to it. It is like listening to a symphony of machine guns, jet engines, rockets, and bombs. Cool!

But, Motorhead is more than a punk band. This album is the punkiest of the lot, at least of the classic studio albums. The other albums that I list below have different styles, and the are all excellent albums. Lemmy is also a talented artist, (OK, "artist" sounds lame, but you understand me). The albums I list below demonstrate genius, but you'll have to judge for yourself.

If you trust my opinion, and I have really given you little reason to, you will pick up these Motorhead albums below. But, sometimes you gotta take a risk ....Whudda you got to lose. It's Motorhead Dude!

If you like Ace, then it is mandatory for you to get No Sleep. If you don't it's like buying half-a-slice of Pizza. No one would or should do that. They go together like ham and eggs. Get em' both today.
