1 out of 5 stars Horrid "fun".......2005-09-05

Currently being passed around Saint-Germaine literary circles by Left Bank critics who, almost as one, deplore "Houellebecq" (nee Michel Thomas) in a well-timed bid to embarrass the latter, here's a dollop of kitsch psychedelia posing as backing tracks for the author as he self-consciously recites his verse (to paraphrase the Guardian's piece on this travesty). Therefore, to those "in the know" folk who MUST own the latest outrage--though this one is five years old, it's very a very "hep" thing to possess (as of 04 September 2005; don't worry, it won't last long, those of you who can't afford it), here's your soon-to-be-shed-object-of-the-latest-"current"-interest. Speaking as that rare oddball American who has heard it, hey--it's truly dismal, a bid for hipness by an author overrated by thousands upon thousands of his readers--although one could easily "flip" my one-star rating into a full five-star if you consider greatness to include pretension, ga-ga writing, and goo-goo-poopy musical backing, so poorly done that it fascinates. Save your money and donate it to the New Orleans victims of Hurricane Katrina, otherwise--many of them of French ancestry, if you need to see said donation as somehow "hip." You don't HAVE to be so HIP all of the time, buyer! This, too, shall pass! Open your pockets to someone else for a change--and make sure it's not just spare change. For all I know, Houellebecq would agree with me: he surely can't be happy to be sniggered at by those in the know.

5 out of 5 stars The forgotten french.......2000-09-22

Nick Cave, the Tindersticks, even Perry Blake have something in common; they all look forward poetry. Michel find first poetry and the try to sing it. Beleieve me ; he get it. This incredible debut was first viewed in FIB 2000. He really enjoys himself and his band. Dont miss it.
