A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

Album Description
Flunk's debut album "For Sleepyheads Only" introduced the US to Norway's stylish synth pop trio of Ulf Nygaard (producer and vocalist), singer Anja Øyen Vister, guitarist Jo Bakke and associated member, drummer Erik Ruud. Their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" gave them not only critical acclaim but a large following from the track appearing on a slew of stateside releases. Described as "woozy, gauzy, muted, blurry and very groovy", Flunk occupies that unlikely place between folk and electronica. At once organic and studio-tweaked, the Flunk sound layers Björk-like Anja's creamy, dreamy vocals over a hushed base of samples, keys, and softly strummed guitars, creating an ethereal, past-midnight vibe. On Morning Star, they have evolved this sound further creating a pure indie sound with less emphasis on electronica. In keeping with Flunk's tradition of New Order covers, on Morning Star we are treated to a live studio recording of "True Faith". Morning Star also delivers very strong original material with the title track "Morning Star", as well as "On My Balcony", "Blind My Mind", and "Probably" showcasing the superb songwriting talents of Flunk.

Love this album, did not dissapoint .......2006-11-29
ugh..............2006-05-08
No as good as For Sleepy Heads Only.......2006-01-07
On For Sleepyheads Only there was a cover of the New Order classic Blue Monday and Flunk have decided to do the same with Morning Star and included a live version of True Faith. Unfortunately this is a bit annoying to me as I am used to the beats of the New Order classic track and there aren't any here just guitars and vocals. It's too bad what they did to it.
So if you're looking the For Sleepyheads Only sound then you will be disappointed with Morning Star but if you can get past that and appreciate your folksy sounding 70's music then you will enjoy this album by Flunk. For something quite different check out their remixes of For Sleepyheads Only called Treat Me Like You Do. There are some great remixes on there.

Life CAN be wonderful - with Anja cooing in your ear.......2005-11-14
I am more than a little late in jumping on the Flunk fan float. I have always listened to their CDs whenever I have gone into B&N, Virgin, wherever, yet kept putting off buying them for some insane reason - still trying to figure that one out. It was only when I noticed that "For Sleepyheads Only" and "Treat Me Like You Do" (remix CD of "For Sleepyheads Only") were no longer available for easy purchase that I flew into a panic, and into action. I saw that I couldn't order either, except from independent sellers on Amazon for $60 or more, and could no longer find copies at Virgin Records, B&N, or Towers - all said they did not have copies and could not order them because they were out of print. OK, you have my attention now. I was finally able to track all of them down for < $20 on Amazon (Thank God for Amazon and it's international independent sellers - ended up finding mine in the UK, of course), and have not been disappointed that I made the frantic, scrambling effort.
This album is amazing, from beginning to end, but particularly in the beginning for me - "Play", "Morning Star", and "On My Balcony" are absolutely incredible and Anja's voice is from heaven. Definitely not the stereotypical voice one might hear on the radio (who listens to the radio anymore?), but the organic, ethereal sound that we as trip-hop fans have embraced.
The cover of "True Faith" performed live proves that Anja's voice is for real, whether reccorded in the studio or behind a live mic. Flunk's cover treatments of songs, "True Faith" on this album and "Blue Monday" on "For Sleepyheads Only", gives me a new respect for the act of covering songs, a practice that usually falls flat. They truly take these songs and make them their own, which is saying something with these two previously established and highly respected tracks.
I really fell in love with the album, though, the other night when listening to it while running errands in my car. The weather was beautiful, windows and sunroof open, sun setting over the mountains in Colorado, foothills all of 1/2 mile west of where I live, and Anja/Flunk provided the most amazing soundtrack that made even the mundane practice of running errands feel like a vacation.
Don't put this one off like I did or you will be kicking yourself later like I am now.
It's a soothing delight and it's smoothing my life .......2005-08-27
Norwegian band Flunk achieve near perfection in "Morning Star," their second "folktronic" album. Languid, mellow and charmingly catchy, this is also graced with angelic vocals and a sense of romantic realism. It's an album for people drunk on love, but with a taste for heartbreak.
It opens with a slow sweep of electronica and sweet vocals: "Everyone/Every singer and every song/Everyone/And every lover whose lover's gone..." Soon Flunk has slipped into a blurry, ethereal groove, which is grounded by the folky melodies of their wispy electronic music.
From there on, the band kicks off into a series of enchantingly sweet folktronic songs: dreamy pop melodies, electronic swirls, folksy guitar balladry, and chirrupy little dancey numbers. And Flunk explores emotions too, starting with the warm rush of early love, but slowly descending as trust is lost.
The album ends on a poignant note, with the speaker announcing, "After all I have no more to say/To you." After being lied to, she ends up wandering in the rain, dazed by the breakup and asking, "Who would dare to bring me love?"
What exactly makes Flunk such a good band? First and foremost, it's obviously the music. This quartet blends folk melodies and electronic wizardry together, producing both dreamy ambience and bouncy pop. Jo Bakke's gently folky guitar and Erik Rudd's solid drumming serve to highlight Ulf Nygaard's smooth programming.
And Anja Oyen Vister is the icing on this enchanting musical cake. Vocally, she's a dead ringer for Icelandic chanteuse Emiliana Torrini, with the same breathy fragility and sweetness. Even better, she sounds like she actually means every word of the songs she sings.
Which is the perfect voice to wisp out lines about how "you know that a love affair/is a lot like the rainbow... you should know that the beauty of life/is the beauty of falling in love..." A few songs like "Morning Star" have too-simplistic lyrics, but fortunately Vister's vocals are enough to overcome whatever boredom they might inspire.
Few bands can create such a perfect, enchantingly sweet music. But Flunk's "Morning Star" is one of those rare little collections, which is pure beauty from start to finish.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12
A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05
There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!
So So Compilation.......2002-01-14
Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23
The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.
Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

Wonderful, transporting music.......2002-01-20
This particular recording is great because it features a fairly broad range of Hungarian folk music and the liner notes are quite extensive (unlike some other Muzikas recordings) which helps those of us unfamiliar with Hungarian music figure out, "What is that wonderful sound?"
Although much has been written about Sebestyen since "The English Patient," it is the instrumentalists who keep me interested. The heterophonic violin textures, the cymbalom and the funky hit-gardon sound unlike anything west of Lake Balaton.
Wonderful !.......1999-10-11

fine recording.......2001-12-21
The cast also featured Roy Castle as Cosmo Brown, Danielle Carson as Kathy Seldon and Sarah Payne as Lina Lamont. A fantastic ensemble was headed by Joyce Carpenter.
Danielle Carson brings the house down with the 'Valentine Girls' in "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", which replaced "All I Do Is Dream Of You". Ms Carson also gives a lovely treatment of "Would You?".
Tommy Steele proves his showmanship with "You Are My Lucky Star", "Singin' In The Rain", and "Fascinating Rhythm". Roy Castle is great in the comical "Make 'Em Laugh", while Sarah Payne is given time to shine in "Temptation".
Overall a fine recording.

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12
This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.
If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.

What a remarkable voice, it's deserves your attention.......2000-11-05
The main concern I had for this cd was the repertoire. It had too many songs that I didn't particulary like. If the repertoire had of been better this cd would definately have been a 5. I will say this, Lesley's voice was super even on the songs that I didn't like.
I know a lot of people are unfamiliar with Lesley, since she lives in the U.K., but she deserves you attention. She is a great talent.
Recommendation: Despite giving this cd a low rating, I still would like to recommend it.
