Album Description
Members of the San Francisco Symphony join members of the San Francisco Opera and the American Conservatory Theater in performing a cornucopia of compositions by Ron McFarland, an Arnold Schoenberg protg who has won a well deserved reputation as one of America's greatest and most popular new composers.(See reviews). The Trio for Harp, Flute and Viola was first heard as a Romance for Harp and Orchestra, commissioned by harpist Gillian Benet. Incorporating the original harp part, Ron McFarland wrote the new version for principal harpist Douglas Rioth, flutist Linda Lukas and violist Christina King of the San Francisco Symphony. An opening section consisting of a series of themes is followed by a central Andante. A lively Scherzo is next with good-humored bantering between the harp and the flute/viola duet. The work ends with recapitulation in varied form of the earlier material.
Four Songs in Blue were written on poems of McFarland's friend Patrick Emery Carr, whose text are heard in numerous songs by Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and others. Mr. McFarland regretted that he had not written the promised songs before Carr's untimely death. He had also promised Sara Ganz that he would have new songs for her next recital. The two promises came together in the Four Songs in Blue, written in a popular style close to the styles of the other songs using Patrick Carr's lyrics.
Sonata for Violin and Piano opens with a Largo theme for the violin, followed immediately by a strong imitation in the piano part and developed as a Prelude to an energetic Toccata. One reviewer described the second movement as "a night scene creating a spell of quiet beauty." The Tempo de giga tht follows makes considerable demands on both violinist and pianist, contrapuntal and chromatic, with, however, a sense of tonality.
Six Les Hommages Piano Preludes are taken from a larger set of 24, and pay homage to ten of McFarland's favorite 20th-century composers, and two from the 19th. He has written 24 character pieces in 24 major and minor keys from original material, using a musical characteristic or style of each composer. All 24 preludes have a thematic unity, with the exception of the Lisztian paraphrases of the love theme and finale from McFarland's opera The Dinner Party. The complete set has been recorded by pianist Elaine Lust on the Ron McFarland Chamber Works CD (Con Molto Music).
Lear and Cordelia: To open his second season as artistic director of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, Edward Hastings commissioned McFarland to write the incidental music for King Lear. At the end of the run he asked McFarland to create a suite from the music that could be performed in concert. Hastings then had it performed on BBC's Desert Island Discs as one of the pieces of music that he would want with him as a castaway. This performance includes Peter Donat and Fredi Olster, ACT's original Lear and Cordelia, with the ACT Ensemble of wind instruments (flute, clarinet, two trumpets, two horns and trombone) harp and percussion conducted by John Johnson. The suite is built around the conversations and confrontations between King Lear and his beloved daughter Cordelia.
"King Lear, without all the words and theatrics, and in a half-hour instead of three. Perfect! Image Magazine

Mind blowing stuff........2006-02-25
Michelangeli, however, just takes the piece to a whole new level - getting right inside its deepest heart, wringing out every ounce of emotion and fully exploring its depth of feeling without ever stepping over the top - but please (as someone else here has rightly pointed out) do not confuse this with his comparitively disappointing 1970's studio version, the elusive genius obviously thrived best on public performance!
Everything else on this disc shines just as brightly and strongly. If you enjoy piano virtuosity of the highest order then you really should add this one to your collection if you haven't already.
Michelangeli: an everlasting and true living legend!.......2005-07-23
His whole approach every time he played a piece, was very similar to an architectural process. Like Furtwangler, he re-created a work, in search of its inner values.
This historic performance is an additional testimony that carves in relief his artistic integrity.
The Schumann's Carnival is played without self indulgent affection, he impressed the romanticism a major sign, a real statement of the greatness of the human condition and glorious sense of transcendence.
Go for this invaluable musical treasure without reserves.
CAN YOU MAKE OUT WHAT THEY ARE SAYING?.......2002-03-03
The first half of the concert is Schumann, Faschingsschwank and Carnaval. Faschingsschwank seems to me to suit him rather better than Carnaval, but let me make it clear to other disappointed owners of M's studio recording of Carnaval that this performance resembles that roughly as Snowhite resembles Carabosse -- it is n times livelier and more attractive, even if I still doubt that M is really a natural Schumann player as Horowitz so conspicuously was. And natural or not he is still a great player and this Reconnaissance is haunting and special beyond the ordinary. Faschingsschwank is the last thing he rehearses, and what struck me most was how on the night M turned up the power and volume in the popular tune 5 minutes or so into the first movement -- a really amazing collectors' piece for connoisseurs of his special tone-production. In general he seems more comfortable with it than with Carnaval and parts of it are as near to joyous as anything I have ever heard from this ultra-serious artist. The rest is Chopin Debussy and Mompou (the Mompou being the Cancion that M used to trot out now and again).
The Debussy Images are not terribly different from his studio recording, and music-lovers new to M's Debussy should not expect anything in the manner of Gieseking or Richter. This Debussy is big in tone, highly coloured, individual certainly but memorable in the extreme. Of Chopin we have the Fminor Fantasy, the G minor
Ballade and a waltz that I'm not sure I have ever heard before --it's not in my sets of the waltzes by Rubinstein and Lipatti. M's
playing of the waltz is simply wonderful, his G minor Ballade is not likely to be contentious -- rhapsodic and romantic but basically mainstream and I can't recall liking any other interpreter so well in this piece. I feel the same way about M's F minor Fantasy but I know that this is probably much more a personal view. The opening march is decidedly fast, the big tune is very inflected and there is a great deal of rubato. I swallow it whole, but some may well disagree. What is surely beyond disagreement is the whole feel of an utterly special occasion that marks this recital.
Michelangeli searches for the Unknown.......2000-10-09
The Debussy as well searches for the phantasmagorical, the poetry in Debussy, Michelangeli, like Cortot I imagine, looked for the oddness, the un-normal,the trancendent aspects of the music. Which is why he plays Scarlatti so beautifully and clean and pristine for there was not the un-normal there,or it was hidden under the simplicity of direct contrapuntal releifs. Like sculptural cathedral objects hauntingly emitting themselves eternally from the safe confines of the granite block.
This is the music which confirms all the myths which had surrounded Michelangeli's career, his overgrown conceit, and mysteries, this disc confirms all the unbelievers to be wrong, Michelangeli searches for the unknown in this music.
A JEWEL!!!.......2000-03-05

Leo Smit: Complete Works
Manufacturer: Donemus Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B00005B6C8 Release Date: 2001-04-24 |
Amazon.com
The Dutch composer Leo Smit (1900-1943) was a Holocaust victim, not to be confused with the fine American composer-pianist Leo Smit. This set collects all the surviving music by the Dutch composer, most of which he hid away safely before being shipped with his harpist wife to an extermination camp. Smit's composing personality has a wide range, but his most characteristic style owes much to Ravel (to whom he wrote an homage) and, often, to American jazz. Smit's chamber music has clear textures, firm rhythms, and a great deal of melodic and harmonic interest; his orchestral works are brilliantly scored, usually quite concise and effective. This joint effort by a wide variety of Dutch performers is generally well performed (although in a few pieces other available Dutch recordings are even better), and the effect of hearing Smit's complete works convinces us that a worthwhile voice was silenced in its prime. Donemus's booklet, in Dutch and English, is extremely useful. But the fold-out package format is very inconvenient and may not hold up to repeated use. --Leslie GerberPop Music:
