3 out of 5 stars German Marches on a budget.......2006-11-05

A good budget recording of twenty German military marches from Legacy International. As far as I know several of the marches on this recording are not easily available elsewhere. I was glad to find a CD of this recording which I had previously had on a LP vinyl record. Sadly the transfer to CD has not enhanced the sound quality. It sounds as it did on the vinyl record. There is a volume 2 of German Military Marches from Legacy International as well as an excellent recording of French military marches.

4 out of 5 stars Old LP Re-Issue on CD.......2004-08-21

This is a collection of old LP recordings that were originally released on the Oylimpic Label some years ago. It has floated around since and has now come out on CD. The CD lists the German Air Force Band, but this group only plays in half of the selections listed. The other half is from another old Olympic Label recording with the Hoch Und Deutschmiester band of Austria.

Its too bad the producers were not a bit more honest about who is performing on this CD. The recording quality here has not been improved much from the original LP recordings.
The same poor linear notes are used with no info. about the
band(s) or music. Just some general ramblings about how military music may have developed in Germany. Its pretty general stuff.

While I have complained about the poor production qaulity the style of playing is still quite good. The recording sounds like it was made back in the 1960s or 70s when German bands sounded different than today. The best selection is the Zapfenstrich medley of marches and hymns used by the old Prussian army as an evening Tattoo piece and a salute to the colors. The music is not listed, but it includes Beethoven's "Zafenstreich March", as well as the old "Kurfursten march", which is included seperately later on the CD as well. This special medlely includes drum and fife florishes unique for the occasion in the old German army and concludes with a stirring version of "Deutschland Uber Alles". This selection is alone worth getting the CD for.

The other music played by the Hoch Und Deutschmiester Band is very good Austian martial selections, although these recordings have been re-issued and improved in their sound quality on another label. Overall you get a decent potporri of German and Austrian marches played by two different bands on this CD for a low price. The sound quality is poor, but not unbearable. This is basically a low budget production. You get what you pay for with this price. Enjoy

2 out of 5 stars Quality?.......2003-02-25

Good representation of melodies. It would have been more enjoyable if they had used a better recording device to capture the sound. I think that wax cylinders went out of favor back in the 1920's. (Very limited dynamic and acustic range) Presentation is slightly better than the "average" high school drum and bugle corps.

3 out of 5 stars Not WW2 military marches.......2002-11-06

I was searching for songs like Panzerlied and bought this CD.
I guess I expected too much from this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2002-03-07

Beware of the other CD with this title. THIS is
the good CD, the other is not. This has many great
marches on it including some they used a bit in Nazi
Germany (the Nazis wrote few songs, they used stock).
Overall, FANTASTIC. You will not be disapointed, I
just wish that a march or two was longer.

Product Description

This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD-Compilation presents the marches, anthems and "Vaterlandslieder" that animated the German Empire of the Hohenzollern Emperors from 1871 to 1918, with PERIOD performances by the bands of the élite guard regiments of the Prussian Army, German soldiers' choruses and leading classical artists of the Wilhelmian era. The ancient recordings assembled in this compilation date from 1903 to 1915 and have been painstakingly restored and reengineered to maximize the surprising degree of fidelity already inherent to them WITHOUT altering their "imperial" ambience in ANY way whatsoever. This album presents the sounds of the ACTUAL military bandsmen and vocalists of Kaiser Wilhelm IIs Germany and also features many long-forgotten treasures of German military music, all presented EXACTLY as recorded in the German Empire of NINETY- TO ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO. As an added bonus the CD is accompanied by a lavish, twenty-page illustrated booklet that features a detailed discussion of German military bands, German martial music and the development of the German Empire after 1871.

5 out of 5 stars Gott Mit Uns!.......2006-05-20

This fascinating CD makes available the sounds of German military music from a century ago. Its indeed refreshing to have historical German martial music that is not Nazi era for a change! These recordings pre-date that period signifiantly, and thanks to the superb enhancement process involved they sound almost as good if not better. There is a lot of fascinating material here, all well researched and documented. The extensive booklet provides one of the most thorough backgrounds of German military music available in English. The selection of music provide a nice balance between well known and less well known material. We have a classic "Prussia's Glory" played by one of the Guards bands, as well as some lesser known compositions by famous composers like Blackenburg and Tieke. While "Alte Kameraden" would have been a stnadard to include here, I am just as glad the temptation was resisted. My only quibble is that the hymn "Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz" is presented in different versions three times! I think twice would have been enough. Missing is a good version of the official "Presentier Marsch" AM1 which was a standard at most reviews of the period. Perhaps there was not a version available for this collection. This is hardly a compliant for what is a fascinating collection. At last we can hear the German military band in its heyday. The folks at Brandenberg Historica are romantics at heart, and one can't help thinking they miss the old days of the Kaiser! Lets hope they can put together a volume two someday.

5 out of 5 stars Gott, Kaiser, Vaterland raises the bar !.......2006-03-05

Modern reissues of vintage 78 rpm military band recordings have been around a quite while. Some are good and many not. With Gott, Kaiser, Vaterland, the folks at Brandenburg Historica have definitely raised the bar on this genre. It's an A+ product in all respects, technically & creative. The menu of the 25 recordings offered is a thoughtful & balanced mix of many well known marches of the era and other not so well known, all superbly produced. The pages of accompanying photographs commentary and notes on Imperial Germany, its martial music and the chosen recordings add much more to what is already an outstanding CD. Any discerning listener is ready to play this one again and again and await a volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars John H Wilson III DDS.......2006-02-28

I have been collecting German Military Music since I was stationed there,Nierstein Oppenheim, 1962.The new CDs of Pre WWI broaden my collection and this is a terrific selection of the early bands. The 78rpms could have been lost to us,but now we can retrieve the sounds of history. Thanks to Brandenburg Historica..I hope this is Vol 1.

5 out of 5 stars Marching for the Kaiser!.......2006-02-27

Absolutely one of the best military music collections I have ever owned! The clarity of the ancient recordings is amazing. The martial airs are clear and stirring. Makes me want to put on my pickelhaube and join the parade!

5 out of 5 stars Historical CD.......2006-02-25

Collectors of historical recordings of military music should rejoice at this release. I completely agree with the comments made on the previous review. There is simply nothing like this available for us collectors excepts perhaps for the cd they Brandenburg Historica sell of marches from Saxony. The marches are taken from recordings from the early part of the 19th century so make allowance for the sound, though some of the recordings have almost modern sound. I look forward to future releases. Thank you, BH!

4 out of 5 stars Great Variety.......2007-01-10

This CD is a good example of German martial music. It has great variety.Hopefully it will lead to reoleases of more albums of marches, from the mid 1850's thru the early twentieth century and would include Austian offerings as well. The Imperial Band would be wonderful.

2 out of 5 stars Title is a bit misleading.......2006-09-24

I was very pleased with the original volume of German Military Marches. There were some differing opinions, in regards to the sound quality of that cd, but nothing that took away from the selections.

As the name of this title "More German Military Marches & Polkas Vol.II" suggests, this cd would be a addendum to the previous volume. This is not the case for this cd, as it is a completely different selection of tracks and genre.

I am not a military marches expert, but I do have a collection and an idea of what I expect from a cd entitled Military Marches & Polkas. This recent volume is primarily a collection of bland polkas. Maybe a Polka fan would like this volume, but if you are looking for good military marches, as found on the original cd, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Presentation.......2006-03-17

As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for good CD's of music suitable for Oktoberfest celebrations. This CD definitely fills the bill. The musicians and their conductor are thoroughly professional and do an outstanding job--which, to be sure, is what one would expect from the German Air Force Band. The blend and balance between instruments is excellent. With the exception of "Deutschland Ueber Alles," the songs are mostly light-hearted, breezy arrangements that are executed with military precision. At the same time, they are very much in the traditional Oktoberfest oom-pah band mood and spirit. An interesting and pleasing combination! With the exception of "Deutschland Ueber Alles," which sounds slightly distorted, the sound quality is superb. I highly recommend this CD!

4 out of 5 stars German Band Music --- "Beer Garden" Style.......2004-07-11

If you're looking for heavy full-range German march music, this is probably not the album for you. Also, the recording quality is a bit tinny here and there, especially in the recording of the "Deutschland Lied." As my heading implies, the perfomance style is much lighter and is more like what you'd hear at a local Oktoberfest beer garden. The music is, on the whole, still enjoyable and the vocals are also on the light side. Back in the late 1950s through the early 1990s, the radio station KTYM broadcast German music programs on Saturdays and Sundays hosted by Fred Schell and Peter Teichmann. On their programs, they played music that sounded much like what you'll hear on this CD. While I don't think of this music as something you'd march to, it is the kind you'd relax to while sipping from your bierkrug and enjoying a Thueringer bratwurst or Muenchner wiesswurst and a side of sauerkraut with friends. On Sundays when I was a kid, my dad would barbeque on the porch. We kids would play in the yard while his German friends would sit in the shade enjoying their beer and listening to this music played on the portable stereo set my dad brought outside on a LONG extension cord. I'm still in the habit of listening to this music on weekends. It still brings back some nice memories.

While the recording quality is wanting here and there, I think you'll find this collection of traditional German music relaxing and pleasing. You would do well to puchase this album used on Amazon, as I did. And, for those of you who understand German: "In der Not schmeckt das Wurst gut ohne Brot!"

              Customer Reviews:

              2 out of 5 stars Om-pah.......2004-07-31

As somewhat of a musicologist and ethnomusicologist I have to maintain that this release is NOT the catalog indicative of the pre WWII and WWII period in German history, dare I say it...Nazi. Third Reich music was an important part of the proaganda mill as it stirred the emotions and provided a soundtrack to military customs. It's called "Martial Music" for those of you who don't know. We, in the U.S., have our own favorites that are used in all types of military settings. Heck, the President's own (USMC Band) is the official band and provider of music at the White House, and they also tour and play the D.C. area quite a bit (it's usually free too). But 3rd Reich martial music has been somewhat taboo, since all this political correctness.... tussle (I don't want to get booted) has left us with sterility where sterility isn't needed.

Anyway, if you want the real deal go up on a search engine and type in 3rd Reich Martial Music or something akin to that. The music is out there. If you want polka or other such BeirGarten stylings, try some Frank Yankovich (not related to Weird Al), or searches on Polka. It's fun stuff, I've reviewed it in the past. All my Cousins in Michigan even dance to it (I'm just a bassist...and not of the polka genre), but I do enjoy a good party, and polka parties are generally a blast.

Back to the subject. If Martial music is something you'd be interested in, by all means do some searches, 3rd Reich, Soviet whatever... it is available, just not here. Another interesting sub-genre of Marshal music are Jodi-calls, i.e. what troops sing, breathlessly while running in formation at Oh-dark-thirty.

Hope that helps, I know a number of my dad's buddies and my all of my Uncles were WWII veterans and they had all sorts of memoribilia, records, flags and some great tales. It's all history and therefore noteworthy.

2 out of 5 stars Lacks any power or kick.......2004-06-07

Forget this record. I expect my German military marches to be played with vim, vigor and possible violence, this band is way too tame. It sounds like an arthritic Perry Como wannabe is directing the group. It's not a military orchestra, this is some dingy oom-pa-pa band assembled in the basement of the Augustinerkeller (if you know Munich, you'll get that joke). The marches are played much too slowly and there isn't the necessary urgency or dynamism here. There is also no vocalizing and the song selection is dismal. Where is "Westerwald?" Where is "Wenn Wir Marschieren??" A crushing disappointment in song selection, style and presentation!

              3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Emasculated.......2002-04-23

I guess after all that horrid Nazi business, it has become majorly politically incorrect to do German military music that sounds like, well, German Military Music - in other words the kind of stuff that would inspire young Rhinelanders to romp & stomp their way to Paris.
Anyway that is the impression I got after listening to this CD. It just lacks the "kick" that I look for in military music (which I mostly listen to kick myself in the butt when I workout)
Instead it sounded to me more like middle aged men playing in an ompa band outside a hoffbraugh.
Nevertheless as ompa music it is well done and if you are looking for that this CD is a good choice. But I rate it a 3 since it is advertised as Military Music.
A better recording, if you can find it, is "Prussia's Glory" - World War 1 era German military music with all the punch.

5 out of 5 stars My heart has surrendered to this CD!.......2001-11-08

I am very much liking, the ah... how is saying? marches. I have many troubles not getting out of mine car and goose-stepping down der Interstaat. I especially have much liking for the Rundfunkblasorchesterkaner whose clever tempo matches that of mine mg42! Who can stay grumpy mit diesen superb musics blitzing the stereo!?

5 out of 5 stars Move Over Sousa.......2000-01-22

Very good CD. The sound is clear and crisp. The selection of marches is excellent. As a whole, I think most of the marches are as good as, if not better, than many Sousa marches. My favorite on the CD is Bayerischer Defiliermarsch and my least favorite is, ironically, Unter Dem Doppeladler. I am a graduate of a military college and have heard and marched to my share of marches and rank many on this CD near the top of my list of favorites.
