3 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality.......2007-01-25

A lot of songs for little money, however, there are no liner notes and the sound quality is very poor. To some it may sound "authentic," but there are many other compilations that are a much better introduction to B.B. King.

1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for a better collection...........2004-11-29

Dollar for dollar, the Millennium Collection CDs are disappointing, and that is putting it nicely.

You can get many more songs for not much more money by looking at other collections, or "Best of" CDs. I see these in the store and am always amazed that people buy them. Not just for BB King, but for numerous artists.

Dollar for dollar, this is simply the worst way to sample the King.

5 out of 5 stars start here.......2003-03-04

This is the best B.B. King CD value for the money. It's a little shallow song-wise and leaves out so many gems form his long, fruitful career, but it's some of his most accessable music. Traces of soul, rock, and '80s pop fall in with the blues on the album's ten tracks, making a good choice for the pop muisc collector or casual fan. More ardent fans will, and should, want more, but it's worth the price for what you get.

5 out of 5 stars Got the blues and I feel soooo good.......2002-02-23

If you just want a taste of BBK than this is an excellent place to start for a small amount of bucks, money well spent. Remastering is very good. Jump and shout and get your mojo goin'.

Une tres belle photo sur la couverture, "La Madrague", les grands classiques attendus ecrits par Gainsbourg y compris la version originale de "Je t'aime moi non plus", quelques perles ici et la au gout de chacun, que demander de plus ?

5 out of 5 stars Lightweight pop of the sixties and seventies.......2004-03-28

Brigitte was better known as an actress and it would be fair to say that she was not a great singer - but she was good enough to make lightweight pop that is worth an occasional listen.

On this album, there are two duets with Serge Gainsbourg. Je t'aime moi non plus was intended for release as a single but it remained in the vaults - I think Brigitte decided she didn't want it released. In any case, Serge then recorded it with Jane Birkin. That version was released as a singe but was quickly banned in France. The singles were shipped across to the UK, where it was banned by the BBC but allowed to go on sale. It sold well, eventually reaching number one on the UK charts - a rare achievement for a record sung in a foreign language. The other duet between Serge and Brigitte is an original song about Bonnie and Clyde.

There is also a duet with Sacha Distel - a cover of Stevie Wonder's You are the sunshine of my life. Like everything else here, it is sung in French. It occurs to me that this is an ideal song for a duet although I've never heard any other duet version of this song. Among the solo recordings, highlights are L'appareil a sous, La Madrague and Harley Davidson. There are liner notes in English - this is a British compilation.

Brigitte's music is not essential, even if you are building a collection of French pop music, but it is worth an occasional listen, especially for Je t'aime moi non plus.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good B.B........2000-09-20

I hate to give a B.B. King CD any less than five stars, but not every song on this CD is great. I did not like track number 3, The B.B. Jones, at all. It's some cheesy dance tune, from a movie soundtrack. It seems like a song that B.B. was required to perform. His heart is not in it at all. Having said that, the rest of the CD is really good. Several King classics are here like Don't Answer The Door, Paying The Cost To Be The Boss and Sweet Sixteen. There's even a nice instrumental which showcases B.B.'s guitar nicely. Overall, I think there are much better B.B. King collections out there than this one, but it still has some really good stuff (Don't Answer The Door is awesome!) Get Live At The Regal or Live In Cook County Jail before this.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD at once !.......2000-01-03

What makes a great deal of a difference between BRIGITTE BARDOT and other actresses who are into singing is that each and every song of BARDOT's was written for her, by the same people who were also her friends. The result is an incredible authenticity.

BRIGITTE BARDOT loved to sing even more than she loved to act: she would spend whole nights in recording studios, then she would rush at dawn to be on time at the movies studios. She wrote in her recent Mémoires that she never felt tired when singing (while she grew tired of acting), and it sure shows when listening to her records.

If you like different kinds of music, you'll love this CD even more: you'll find calypso, twist, pop, mambo, charleston, chanson...

This CD is also great for people who are learning French: BARDOT has such a personal way to pronounce words, detaching them from each other, which makes it very easy to understand the lyrics.

In a sociological and historical way, BRIGITTE BARDOT is what THE 50's and the 60's in France were all about. She is part of our collective memory.

Buy this CD: you can't be disappointed !

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......1999-03-31

This Cd is fantastic, how many musical genres can you fit on one 20-track CD? There's cutesy pop, Gainsbourg's classics, and the adorable but cheesy Tu es le soleil de ma vie.

Gainsbourg wrote some wonderful songs for her, and they're mostly all here, Harley Davidson, Je T'Aime, L'Appareil a Sous etc. You can hear she's having a lot of fun on these songs.

If you like Bardot, buy it, it's a classic. Great photos too.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Blues Album.......2007-02-26

    That 5 is really a 4.5.

I don't write reviews usually but the previous reviewers are entirely misguided and wrong, hence the need for another review. This is NOT a compilation disc- it is not a greatest hits collection, and it is not 70 minutes long. "Blues on Top of Blues" was an ALBUM, and a good one at that. The album is very brassy, as B.B. hired a fellow named Johnny Pate (who also worked with Curtis Mayfield) to help him arrange the songs. There are definite gems here- "Paying the Cost to Be the Boss" is a classic, and "Heartbreaker" and "Raining in My Heart" are good cuts. I don't know why I single them out, because it's pretty good end to end- lots of soul, great singing and playing by B.B., and standard era arrangements. This is a major piece that chronicles an important place in B.B. King's career, and should be treated as such. If you are looking for "The Thrill Is Gone," get a different cd, rather than buying this album and then complaining about its absence because you are too stupid to research your purchase!

"Blues on Top of Blues" came out in 1968 (hence the brevity which the other geniuses noted), but it's still pretty much the same quality as the vinyl, so when they remaster it I'll give that the full 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Blues on top of Blues.......2006-06-22

I had this on vinyl years ago, but lost it. I reordered it on CD because the tunes still ring in my mind. The best horn arrangements I've ever heard on a B.B. King album. Not a lot of guitar, but great vocals, great arrangements, Horns are awesomeat times. So many of his albums just repeat previously recorded stuff- THIS IS A GEM!

3 out of 5 stars Way too short.......2002-10-02

This CD is kind of a jip when you think about it. Yes, it's inexpensive, but it's only about 29 minutes long. There are many other BB King CDs out there that give you lots of music for your money. However, this isn't really one of them.

The songs featured here are early recordings, as one might guess from the rather young-looking picture of BB on the cover. The recording quality sounds a bit dated, but there is plenty of energy in the songs to make up for it. There is a kickin' horn section on some of the songs that don't really typify the blues, but are still delightful.

There are no liner notes, so you have no idea what the chronology of the songs are or who the musicians were, other than the man himself. But it's over before you know it, so don't pay too much for this. I imagine the box set is a little more worth the cost, wouldn't you think?

The sleeve is a little short on personnel details, but the music is top notch. A fine anthology of Levy's bluesy outings with all sorts of collaborators, from the jazz, blues and funk worlds. A great overview of Ron Levy's grooves, and definitely one to get.

      Amazon.com essential recording

There are countless B.B. King collections out there, but this is one of the few that really captures the development of his groundbreaking style in the '50s. Why these essential masters from the R.P.M., Modern, and Kent imprints had never been released before on CD is truly a mystery. But why complain now? Here for your pleasure are early (and some original) versions of B.B. signature songs like "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Sweet Little Angel," and "Three O'Clock Blues." On each track, you can hear King crying the blues and executing T-Bone Walker-style solos with the energy and confidence of a young man. The sting of his guitar "Lucille" is made even more powerful due to the early stereophonic sound, and his studio bands pack a primitive wallop as well. --Ken Hohman

      Amazon.com

If the four-CD King of the Blues box is too big a bite out of your budget, this is a good primer of early B.B. King gems. "You Upset Me Baby," "Sweet Sixteen," "Sweet Little Angel," and "Everyday I Have the Blues" are among his career-founding hits. There's even his rare take on the Elmore James classic "Dust My Broom," reinterpreted sans James's trademark slide guitar licks. The youthful exuberance of King's singing is a joy to hear on all of these 20 tracks. And the influence of T-Bone Walker and swinging jump blues is at its most naked on these sides from the R.P.M., Kent, and Crown labels. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Correction to my previous review ("B.B. - When He Was Hot").......2003-02-25

I made a comment about the horn sections on this CD and expressed it badly. There is a horn section on some of the tracks. But they're from the original sessions. Some re-issues of this material have extra horns dubbed over the older horn section in an attempt give the saxes and trumpets a more "full" sound.
That's it... This is a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars When B.B. Was Really Hot..........2003-02-25

This is one one the truly great Blues compilations. The recordings were made when B.B. was really doing more than just playing the Blues - both his singing and guitar work were "on fire". These are the songs that made him so legendary and influential.
Also, on this CD the songs haven't had a horn section over-dubbed onto the tracks. This was the case on some of the compilations that were issued on LP in the '60s. What you have here is the original sound - on the border between smooth and raw - made many years before B.B. decided to become a Pop performer.
By the way, one of the other reviews gives this CD only 1 star. I think the reviewer misunderstood the rating system, since the tone of his review is actually lauditory.

1 out of 5 stars NOT the original recordings!.......2000-07-02

I am an enormous fan of B.B. King's early work -- I listen toit all the time. Don't be fooled by this CD: these are not theoriginal recordings they purport to be. In the late 60s, King's old label, Modern Records, wanted to cash in on his newfound popularity. They decided to reissue his early recordings, but they apparently thought that the sound quality was lacking. They overdubbed new bass, drum and horn parts onto them -- destroying the original character of the recordings, and making them all sound the same. This CD is a reissue of THAT release -- NOT of the originals. For a fantastic CD of the original, unadulterated cuts, get "B.B. King: His First Two Original Albums on One CD" on the Flair label. Amazon carries that one, too, and it's a 5-star CD!

      4 out of 5 stars Hardly a clunker.........1999-08-05

This is a great party CD of early B.B. King. A welcome addition to any CD collection.

2 out of 5 stars Not the "Best of".......1999-04-07

This album contains a lot of clunkers. Many of these tracks were not originally released and it's easy to see why. Don't waste your money on this CD.

      Album Description

This set (this is the first out of seven CDs), would make an ideal introduction to Bartok's piano music, especially if you are still unfamiliar with the bulk of it. These are urbane, honest, eminently intelligible interpretations that will draw the uninitiated into the texts of this extraordinarily rich music. In her exhaustive survey of his complete piano works June de Toth proves herself a smart, solid, and reliable pianist. She offers thoughtful and often eloquent readings that reject both hysteria and the kind of kamikaze approach of so many young piano lions. Its overall sobriety and discipline is such that the music speaks for itself. She fathoms each solo piano work as a kind of apposite gestuary of hemiolas and unnerving hesitations, and as the stuff of musical speech. If Bartok was Hungary's answer to Moussorgsky, nowhere is it more evident than here. Capturing the essentially trochaic inflections of Hungarian speech with the knowing temperament of a native (Ms de Toth is full blood Hungarian) she lays out the keyboard songs with the patrician air of an old storyteller at a family gathering. Whatever one's ideas and taste may be in interpretation of Bartok, her performances are persuasive. Take particular note of her attractive readings of the 14 Bagatelles: these she portrays with a kind of arid simplicity that enhances their now playful, now lonely ethos.

Review from AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE March/April 1999

This set (Bartok's Solo Piano Works, Volumes 1, 2 and 3) would make an ideal introduction to Bartok's piano music.

The music speaks for itself, as if Ms de Toth were loathe to run any interference. In the wistful 'Street of Istvand', for example, or in the rugged yet oddly seductive sailor song 'In the Harbor of Nagyvarad', her no-nonsense surefootedness gives ample voice to Bartok's nostalgic melancholia.

Indeed, in these works, part of the 42 Hungarian Folk Songs for Children, she fathoms each as a kind of apposite gestuary of hemiolas and unnerving hesitations, and as the stuff of musical speech.

Capturing the essentially trochaic inflections of Hungarian speech with the knowing temperament of a native (Ms de Toth is full blood Hungarian), she lays out the keyboard songs with the patrician air of an old storyteller at a family gathering.

Take particular note of her attractive readings of the 14 Bagatelles: these she portrays with a kind of arid simplicity that enhances their now playful, now lonely ethos.

In her exhaustive survey of his complete piano works (these are the first three out of seven CDs), June de Toth proves herself a smart, solid, and reliable pianist. YOUNG
