Once En Vogue proved that old-fashioned gospel-soul female harmonies could create sparks with modern street beats, every record company went looking for young singers to hook up with new-jack-swing producers. Those efforts bear fruit with SWV, which stands for Sisters with Voices, and the three teenaged singers from New York really do have great pipes, capable of a distinctive sound that can dominate a production rather than the other way around. Cheryl "Coko" Gordon, the trio's lead singer, boasts a great range that allows her to sound tough and sultry in her gritty alto, and romantic and flirty in her trilling soprano. SWV's debut album includes 13 different songs, plus two alternate mixes, and the best tracks are the 10 written and produced by Brian Alexander Morgan, who knows how to create the melodies that all great harmonies must start with. The first single, "Right Here," features a very funky, push-and-pull rhythm track, but the three singers reclaim the song with harmonies that are very percussive themselves but with lots of melody and romantic personality as well. The single, "Weak," is a ballad that allows Gordon to confess her infatuated weakness without ever sounding like a weakling as she hits the beats confidently and purrs in anticipation. --Geoffrey Himes

Great Debut..........2007-03-22

This is a great start to SWV's career but their second album "New Beginning" was their best album to date. On this album they had a lot of smash hits like "Weak", I'm so Into You, "Downtown",and "Human Nature". They had a few uptempo songs that sounded good, but they exceled on their ballads "It's About Time" and "What I Need". All the SWV fans should have this album and SWV is working on some new material so look out for them.

"It's About Time" takes me back to my young days, as a pre-teen. I remember well, listening to tracks on this album, on our local R&B radio station. What made SWV stand out, as a trio, was their great ability to blend different voice types together. They all had lower voices, but Coco, in particular, demonstrated her command of her lovely alto range. This is heard especially on tracks like "I'm So Into You" (with the infectious hook, and catchy melody) and "Weak" (which was later covered by that teen pop star, JoJo---their version is FAR superior to hers, by leaps and bounds). My favorite cut is "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)." This combines a sample of "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson, with their lovely vocals.

These are the types of songs you put on, when you and your sweetie are getting together for a romanctic evening. Just turn the tracks on, pour the wine, and enjoy these Sisters With Voices. ......

Who doesn't remember 'weak'? This girl group was very good, I don't know why they broke up but they were good.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Bought this because I follow/love what Winwood has done in the past - very pleased I got it. It is full of tracks that stand out because of their musicality, difference to the current musical mainstream and depth/richness of melody and instruments. This album could be prescribed for stress relief, it is very cool. Plenty of Latin influence in this one but SW, as always, finding warm melodies and stunning vocals to spark the soul. For me it was worth buying just for track 1 (Different Light) and track 9 (Horizon) - and everything in between is great too.

This is the best quality album soud wis I have. The music is first class and will be enjoyed by all Steve Winwood fans. He only makes one every five years or so. You cant miss really. We all want a box set remastered but alas not yet. This is the next best thing.

Why remaster a great sounding CD recorded less than 3 years ago? .......2006-05-09

I bought the CD with the companion recording of the three live cuts a couple of years back, and it sounds fantastic. Is this newly packaged dual disc version really remastered with superior sonics? or is it just a marketing gimmick. I am the suspicious sort.

Saw Winwood and his band at an outdoor show last summer and they were trememdous, they stretched songs from this CD and classic pieces into some great live workouts, go see them if they come to your area.

Perhaps the last time that I seriously listened to Steve Winwood was back during the premier attention focused on "Arc of a Diver". Anyone who can do the math knows that that was a long time ago and I have to admit that Winwood music was stapled in my synapses along with my perhaps less "responsible" days. Today, I believe that I can judge a suite of music with a bit more context than those younger, headier days. But, to my astonishment, I was "blown-away" by this resurrection of Winwood artistry. A syncopated blend of his most creative process, injected with blatantly latin/caribbean overtones simply left me breathless. The production, arrangements and insistent rhythyms led me to finish that bottle of Stag's Leap Chardonnay all by myself. In short, an incredible recording.

Since his debut with Spencer Davis as a mere teenager, Steve Winwood has exemplified all that is great about rock. This album is nothing short of superb. He takes an obscure soul number like "Why Can't We Live Together," and puts his definitive stamp on it. I've heard him described as a white Ray Charles, and after seeing him in September at Denver's Paramount Theater, I have to give in to that cliche. From the outstanding opening track to the final cut, this album brims with understated elegance that is rare in rock anymore. Everything from soul to latin to Traffic-style up tempo numbers is what you will find on this remarkable recording. His Hammond B-3 playing is still the standard among keyboard players and provides a very warm retro feel to the production. The band seems to be essentially the same one he tours with and they are all superb musicians. I would encourage the purchase of this record, and even more so, encourage everyone to catch his live show. From boy genius to rock pioneer to grammy winner, Steve Winwood deserves, and has earned, all of the accolades and admiration one can give a performer.

A Terrific Album.......2007-04-15

If you are not familiar with Paulette's voice think a less melancholy Tammy Wynette (one of my favorites). Paulette's work with Highway 101 is well documented but she has some wonderful guest appearances, especially on The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Circle II.
The first number on the album, I Knew a Good Thing When I Had It, should be a major country hit. Lively and very catchy you have a hard time getting this song out of your head. That Old Glass Case is a really good song about a family heirloom. He's Funny That Way and Twenty Years Ago are two more fine numbers that like all of Paulette's tunes has hooks that grab you and have you singing along. It's About Time Now is a high energy tune with good use of the fiddle that will start your foot tapping and before you know it you will be dancing to this one.
I saved Thank You Vets for last, although every song is very good this one is extremely moving for me, a Viet Nam Vet. Paulette's brother Gary is a Nam Vet and the lyrics on this song come straight from her heart. She tells all Nam Vets that she appreciates them and the country now appreciates them even though it is late in coming from our country...better lat than never I say. The song has a great melody and has the hooks she is known for but there is a lot of power in this number and the heartfelt lyrics. It is the song that brought Paulette out of retirement and we are the beneficiary of that decision. Paulette dedicates this album to all Viet Nam Vets. Buy the CD, you won't be disappointed, even if you are not a country fan.
Here is hoping this very talented and caring lady continues to record. If she plays in your area do yourself a favor and catch her live.

Finally Paulette has given us a new CD. With 10 original songs, she has written precious stones to share with all who listen. No one writes more personal and meaningful songs then Paulette has on this CD. Besides songs such as The Old Glass Case and He's Funny That Way. She has,written a song for the Vietnam vets. Where have the other writers been on this subject. Easily showing she can express any feelings she has, even on a subject to difficult for most to tackle.

Once again if this isn't enough, she shows us no one can actually sing their songs with the emotion and energy that she gives to every line. No wonder Highway 101 was the most popular group of its day.

Carlson's Timely Return Warrants A Well-Deserved Homecoming.......2006-06-27

Prime Cuts: Only in Your Dreams, He's Funny That Way, That Old Glass Case

It's about time for her return -- after a 9 year hiatus, where she has chosen the venerable prerogative of raising a family -- Paulette Carlson's finally back. Vocally this petite blonde is still packed with emotions when she croons a ballad and when she rocks she still can cause barns to be ablazed. And, despite the fact that country music has gone through transformational maelstroms led by the assault of pop and rap that shook its identity at its core, Carlson's new CD still comes across as if time has not changed. With a throwback to the days when she was heading the multiple-number-one group Highway 101, "It's About Time" still relies on those wonderful rustic rudiments such as steel guitars, fiddles and piano to parlay these newly recorded 12 paeans. However, with "It's About Time," Carlson makes two departures. Instead of relying on the scribes at Music Row, Carlson has penned 10 out of the 12 cuts. Further, she has chosen to helm the album by herself, a fleet she has had never done before.

Most ambitious among this oeuvre is the heart wrenching ballad "That Old Glass Case," a story song that finds echoes with Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors." Here Carlson waxes nostalgia about her deceased parents incurred via an old glass case, a priced family heirloom. Though it is easy to give in the tooth-decaying mawkishness on such songs, but Carlson redeems this track with the way she caresses each note with care dripped with emotions. Also, in the inspirational mode is "Rejoice for the Moment," a ode to carpe diem in the lyrically alley of Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying," though it lacks the urgency of McGraw's hit. And when inspiration turns to patriotism, a couple is represented here: lead single "Thank You Vets" is a slice of personal tribute Carlson wrote in remembrance of her brother who died in the Vietnam War. Though the sentiments are to be commended, but the marching drums sounds trite; a simpler backing would be more effective. While "She Rides for the Brand" offers a graphic narrative perspective of the agonizing toil of war on the families of the vets.

Lest one gets the impression that this is an inspirational CD, the songs that deal with romance abound. The choice cut here being the exhilaratingly upbeat "He's Funny That Way" where Carlson provides a litany of why her man is indispensable. Surrounding herself with a wall of wailing fiddles, Carlson bears her heart on the hurt-drenched "Only in My Dreams," this is stuff the heart is proud of. "Twenty Years Ago" and "My Love is in America" are the only non-Carlson penned tracks. Of which, the former was a Kenny Rogers' hit which Carlson's version strips this ballad from Rogers' 80s pop synth-feel. But the latter, "My Love is in America," is a offbeat ballad that suffers too much from some unfortunate chord progressions thus diffusing the melody as a result.

Though Carlson's return is much anticipated, there is a feeling that such a return was a little rushed as far as the song selection of the CD is concerned. There's nothing that really jumps out that spells "hit" all over. Neither is there an entry that will etch into the listener's conscience the way "(Do You Love Me) Just Say Yes" or "I'll Start With You" had on listeners those years ago. Nevertheless, there are enough good tunes to warrant one's listening time. In short, this is a timely return that deserves one's endorsement.

It sure is about time!!.......2006-06-21

Finally..a new cd from the voice of Highway 101, Ms Paulette Carlson. Coming out of 'retirement', this cd was released last year (albeit with different cover art) and has been available on her official website. Anyone who likes Paulette or Highway 101 will want to buy this cd anyway but you wont be dissapointed. Every track is a gem and her voice sounds as beautiful as ever. Simple country songs of love and loss (I knew a good thing... ,I wish you wouldent stand.. & Only in your dreams) along with heartfelt nostalgia (That old glass case & Twenty years ago)and 'traditional' songs (My love is in America & Rejoice for the moment). Also featured are 'Americana' songs, "She rides for the brand", "Its about time" and the reason for Ms Carlson returning to the spotlight - "Thank you Vets" are all really accessable. As a 35 year old guy from England I really have no real knowledge/conection to the Vietnam war. Despite this I was actually very moved by the heartfelt sincerity of the lyrics and the emotion in her voice in "Thank You Vets". Paulette has once again shone through with her songwriting and has written all but 2 tracks. This is certainly a welcome return and hope this to be the first of many more cds we can expect to get from this wonderful and very talented lady!!

This is great music.......2007-07-19

Here's why I did not award this great recording FIVE stars: There are no incredibly unforgettable moments. Steve's classic solo recordings - BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE, for instance - have surprises everywhere. The drum intro to "Higher Love," the guest voices on the title track, and so on. This particular album has everything EXCEPT that extra pinch of substance we refer to as genius. It's a very good album, though, every song is good. You should add it to your collection, especially if you admire Steve's other stuff. It is different and solid.

This album brings me back to when you could buy an album and the songs were longer than 3 minutes each on it. Nowadays if the songs go over 3 minutes it's too long for the general publics' attention span can handle. If you like great musicianship and lyrics then this album is for you. It's hard to believe this is only 3 guys playing. Steve Winwood is as always great ! Buy it if you're a fan.

A Genius At Work!.......2005-07-19

Since he was the star performer in the Spencer Davis Group way back in the 60's, Steve Winwood has always managed to amaze and delight me in his musical genius and style. He is such a virtuoso yet with the flare necessary to allow him to adapt to any type of music style, whether it be hard rock, jazz, Latin or any combination thereof. With the release of 'About Time' Steve has yet again laid out for us a masterful design and performance in every single tune on this CD! My particular favorites are 'Different Light','Cigano', 'Domingo Morning' and the live version of 'Mr Fantasy'. The later of these is included on the Imported version along with live versions of 'Why Can't We Live Together' and 'Voodoo Child' and well worth the addition few dollars. But not a single tune is not worth playing over and over again! What genius. This time with Latin flavor and lots of it. I had the pure pleasure if sitting row 5 center stage at his recent concent in Danbury, Ct and he was amazing. The group was tight and the music flowed from one masterpiece to the next. And generously. Don't miss this recording of our own modern day Mozart. Steve, come back with more, very soon!!!

Stevie's B3.......2005-07-07

"About Time" is one fantastic CD, highlighting what is best about Steve Winwood: great vocals,outstanding music supported by talented musicians around him, innovative jams, and the unique sound of the Hammond B3 and Leslie "going round and round". I am so happy that Steve has returned to exclusively playing the best instrument and sound in music: the B3..and, this musical collection reminds us all of how talented a keyboard player he is. The song selection is outstanding, and for many reasons can be played over and over again, especially "Cigano", "Different Light", and, on the bonus CD "Voodoo Chile". "Dear Mr. Fantasy", live, really reminds us of his continued strong vocals as well as guitar playing that ranks at the top among the best. But, that constant presence of the organ and leslie sound in every cut makes this CD, to me, the best he has ever produced. I only hope that Steve and his current strong, talented line-up contine to play together and produce more CD's for all of us to enjoy.
(I saw this band live in Chicago last weekend..what a show... topping off the concert with an encore of "Crossroads" and "Gimme Some Lovin'.)
I hope "About Time" is the first of many more Cd's to come from the great Hall of Famer, Steve Winwood.

Best of Winwood Delux.......2005-04-15

This 2 CD album set is off the charts for a Steve Winwood collection. The only improvement I would have the nerve to even suggest would have been to add one of his biggest hits, "Can't Find My Way Home", but that's OK because there is the *LIVE* bonus CD with: "Dear Mr. Fantasy", Why Can't We Live Together", and "Voodoo Chile".

Of course, the only thing better than a CD of Winwood is to actually see him in concert and I came close to that by seeing his group perform on PBS "Soundstage" not long ago and it was one hour of pure jam style enjoyment! The range of his talent is a true pleasure to take in!

This CD was amazing. I love every song, especially Mandy and 7:05, but also Year 3000 is a song that everyone in my whole family (my parents and my little brother age 6 and my little sis age 8) can all listen to in the car and sing along to. And until about a month ago, I wondered if they were truly as nice as they sound the CD. I went to the Easter Egg Roll at the White House and performed there. Not only did they sing live, but they play all there own instruments. Also, they stayed for hours after, taking pictures and signing autographs for everyone. Also they would just walk around and you could talk to them. This CD was wonderful and I would recommend this for all ages! GO JONAS BROTHERS! (though I e NICK THE BEST, he's the little 1)

Great soundtrack for the children.......2007-05-13

My daughter wanted this soundtrack. I bought it and listened to it before she did. It was nice to give her a cd that she likes and have no restrictions on it..I actually liked one or two of their songs..However, very popular cd amazon gave me a great price but I had to wait almost 5 weeks for it

Fantastic Sixties Rock!.......2007-05-29

I am a big fan of sixties music--well, really, 65 to 75--with an emphasis on psychedelic stuff out of England and harder rock from wherever. Therefore, I regret to say I had not even heard of this band. I'm not sure how I could have missed them. These guys have a great sound, very distinctive, very hip. I actually think their sound is closer to Paul Revere and the Raiders than The Who. It is full of very cool predatory attitude, and as a previous reviewer noted, there are some great bass lines. I rarely even notice the bass, but here I kept saying "Oh, Yeah! That sounds great!" Don't worry, there are also great guitars riffs and neat lyrics. I'm telling you, Motorhead needs to do a cover of "Try It." That song needs to be perpetuated throughout the generations. This is definite rock music, not pop. Any type of "lite" sound is the death knell for me, and The Attack are not lite. These guys really deserve a more notable place in musical history. My respect may be new but it is now iron-clad.

I buy about a dozen CDs a month, and this is the single most satisfying CD I've bought in over a year. I usually listen to any new CD once or maybe twice and then I file it away to be listened to some other day. This CD I've replayed about 20 times now over the past week and I still get a great vibe from it every play. I now move on to "Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends," but those fellows have a hard act to follow, because The Attack really set a mod mood which compliments my evening cocktail.

Attack - 'About Time! Definitive Mod-Pop Collection,1966-68' (RPM).......2007-05-01

A superb nineteen track compilation of The Attack's unreleased gems, Decca singles and radio sessions. About every cut here is truly out-standing, like "Anymore Than I Do", "Feel Like Flying", "Try It" (I saw the Grassroots perform this song live out on the oldies circuit many moons ago), the awesome "Go Your Way", the total groovin' "Colour My Mind", "Lady Orange Peel" (great guitar licks), their happening Stones cover "Sympathy For The Devil", the uptempo "Neville Thumbcatch" and so on. Only tune here I didn't care for was the corny "Created By Clive". Several line-up changes took place during the Attack's existence but the most vital personnel seems to have been Richard Shirman-vocals, Geoff Richardson-guitar, George Watt-organ, Kenny Harold-bass and Chris Allen-drums. Comes with a nicely assembled 14-page booklet packed with plenty of info, pics, complete discography and art work. Sure to appeal to fans of the Action, Open Mind, Q 65, early Who, the Creation and Les Fleurs De Lys. Essential UK '60's psych. Another upside to this CD is that it has a nearly all-different track listing than The Attack's 'Early Daze' released on the Angel Air label a few years ago (see my review).

Powerful infectious bass lines..............2006-12-30

My first reaction to this CD was being captivated by the infectious bass lines, far more than any of the rest of the instrumentation. In much the same way that Keith Moon's drumming stood out to me when I first heard the Who (the "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" 45). The material is very strong, witness the fact that the lead track, "Any More Than I Do," was a B-SIDE when originally released. I had originally heard "Created by Clive" as performed by The Syn, but The Attack's version is far stronger, peppier and enlivened by the mallett percussion. Well, it says it's a mod collection but, at the risk of alienating purists, I would surely suggest that the psych and freakbeat minded would all find much to enjoy.

Excellent Band/-Excellent 60's Rock u Never Heard!.......2006-12-07

This band should have been as Big as The Who! For sheer originality within the English rock of the late 60's these guys are second to none. This music's right up there with "Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Who sings My Generation and The Move". Now's your chance to hear how "The Attack" pay homage to"The Standells" with this excellent version of the first rock record to get banned in the U.S. Because of it's "filthy" lyrics which amounts to "Try it". How times have changed. The worse fears expressed by 'Lou Reed's Berlin' have been realized. Let this excellent group take you back to a much simpler time when Rock n Roll was new and thousands of super creative bands roamed the US and London. And people still believed that "Rock Music" could save your soul.

Personal Denver.......2007-05-12

This album is not popular with those who prefer "Country Boy" Denver, but it's my personal favorite. It's dedicated to the memory of his father and includes a musical setting of "High Flight," a poem that has private resonance for me and my own aviator father. The title song is my all-time favorite Denver piece, the voice of John Denver, humanitarian. This album is more "produced" than his early work, part of his effort to evolve as public taste changed, which is a challenge for any performer whose career spans decades. You won't hear any twangy bluegrass nostalgia here, but you will hear a mature songwriter at the top of his form, with something to say about humanity in that clear, pure voice. I challenge any Denver fan to listen to "Wild Montana Skies" without singing along.

ok JD album.........2007-03-22

This is not at all a bad album. But if you're a fan of his live performances and early studio albums (like me), it will take some time to grow on you.

Not Quite The John Denver We Are Used To.......2006-07-04

I really only bought this album because I had heard the track, On The Wings Of A Dream. A really wonderful spiritual song about the mystery of life and death. This was not just a random thought from John, his father died shortly before this album was released and he dedicated it to him.
I especially enjoyed Thought Of You, a song about the difficulties of love and relationships. Falling Out Of Love and Wild Montana Skies are good enough to buoy this uneven album. Other than these cuts, I cannot say that I enjoyed listening to the remainder of its contents.
I do understand that at this time in his life, John was facing a great deal of personal upheaval. This album does cover the wide spectrum of his interests and private life. These were difficult times for him, the blow of divorce, the death of his father, and trying to balance a demanding career plus his humanitarian programs. John is certainly trying to express all of his emotions and hopes in each of these songs. Maybe he tried too hard to show his alternate tastes in music.

forget preconceptions.......2006-01-05

This album has to contain some of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. "It's about time" and "Almost a year" are particular favourites. Although it may be a shock to many people who see JD as a "Country boy" you need to listen to this album and the lyrics of the songs without trying to make them fit into the usual Denver label. I have played many of these songs to friends, without telling them who the artist was, and everyone who has heard the songs have loved them and expressed surprise that they were by JD. He has won over quite a few new fans through this procedure. My advice is to forget your preconceptions about the artist and the label he is supposed to fit into and just listen to the music and the words. I am sure that you will find much that will touch and inspire you.

Not the Real Thing.......2001-04-03

I think John Denver was concerned about losing some of his popularity and this album reflects his attempt at "throwing something against the wall and seeing if it sticks." John was not Bob Marley nor was he Bruce Springsteen. He was best at being himself. The thing about it is, the lyrics still reflect his true self, but he tried to put them to music that just wasn't him. Later on, I think he realized why we bought his albums and tried to go back to that successful formula. Unfortunately, his untimely death came before that reached fruition.

One Great Album.......2005-08-18

This is truly one of the best albums I have listened to in the last 6 mos--why it is not released in the US puzzles me. This is better than alot of the Black Crowes albums. Marc is a great guitarist-very original-and an excellent singer and song writer. Why doesn't he get any regonition? He should and I am waiting for his next release. I guess I will have to wait for the next Black Crowes release to hear from him again--I will definitely go to the next concert. GET THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!
