A Non-Competitive 'Marriage of Figaro'.......2004-06-25

There have been some stellar opera recordings in this series from Naxos: Britten's 'Turn of the Screw' and 'Albert Herring,' Beethoven's 'Fidelio,' and Samuel Barber's 'Vanessa' come to mind. But this isn't one of them. There are some plusses. The orchestra is excellent and the direction by conductor Michael Halász is energetic and flexible. The Countess of Marina Mescheriakova, the Bartolo and Basilio of Janusz Monarcha Michael Roider are fine. The Cherubino of Michelle Breedt is fine in many passages. The Susanna of Judith Halász is a little shaky in spots, but sparkling in others. Unfortunately, the Figaro of Renato Girolami is only so-so. And the only 'name' singer in the bunch, Bo Skovhus, is simply rough and ready (and a bit unsteady) as the Count, a part that require the utmost in suavity both of tone and of personality; he is best in the ensemble pieces. Further, there is no libretto so that someone buying the set as a newcomer tp the opera but on a budget would be left without the sung words.

With many other marvelous recordings of the opera available at mid- or budget-price and in acceptable sound - those, say, of Karajan (with Schwarzkopf, George London, Seefried) or Solti (with te Kanawa, Popp, Ramey, Thomas Allen, et al.) - this set simply isn't competitive.

Sousan (Soosan) was an iranian female singer that practiced an urban iranian folk music known as: " Koocheh baazari ", meaning: Music from the streets of the Baazar!.

From a musical composition point of view, this music is very simple. Actually sometime overlly simplistic, simply following the notes of the musical scale. However, the lyrics talk about problems of ordinary urban people that many other artists dont cover. Also the vocal "soul-ish" pipes of performers like Sousan is simply breath taking and overshadows the simple musical compositions.

A great introductory album for those not familiar with Johnny Clegg and his bands Juluka and Savuka. This "best of" album includes some of his best tracks ever including a wide range of songs from 1982-1993. As a added bonus, some of the classic Clegg has been rerecorded for new versions. Don't miss the track "Tough Enough", a hauntingly prophetic song from his Heat, Dust & Dreams album. Clegg, as always, is ahead of the times, carving ethic African culture and rhythms and popular sounds to create his unique blend of great music. A must buy for the world music lover!

Your average American hasn't heard of Johnny Clegg and Savuka. Much less has the average American heard the wonderful fusion of thier style. But this is no average South African band. With lyrics that cry out against Apartheid rule and melodies that cry out with voices of the past, Savuka hits you with music that will leave you saying, "Viva, Mandela!"

I bought it based on my enjoyment of his other CD...Assarouf, another mysterious and compelling musical experience. It is all very unworldly and alternative in sound and rhytym. Clearly this is an artist that has journeyed to all parts of the globe looking for unusual and haunting sounds that he translates into his own musical expression. Travel by Ear w/SAFAR.......2000-01-09

I had listened to a piece by Steve and Baly (Amin Amin)and was impressed. So I thought I would take a chance and order this CD. I am glad to say, I am not disappointed at all. All the selections are nice. Of course, I have a few favorite tracks (can't go wrong with tracks 1 thru 6 and 10). As a whole though this CD is very good. Steve learned a lot in his travels and it shows on this musical odyssey. I like Steve Shehan's talent for blending different cultural instruments (vocals and items) into his music. I've said this before, but again, if you like to travel and you've never been to this part of the world, travel by ear.
