About the Artist
NAWANG KHECHOG has been called the "Jean-Pierre Rampal" of the Tibetan flute. After leaving Tibet, Nawang travelled to India where he studied meditation and Buddhist philosophy as a monk for 11 years, including four as a hermit. He is best known for his Grammy®-nominated collaborations with Kitaro, and live performances with Philip Glass, Paul Winter, Laurie Anderson, Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Baba Olatunji, and served as an advisor for the film Seven Years in Tibet. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Rivers of Sound on Air from Tibet.......2000-07-12

The decision to purchase this CD was promted by my having had the opportunity to experience this artist live one evening during the time of H.H. the Dalai Lama's recent visit to Los Angeles, June 2000. While being introduced, I learned that Nawang had spent many years in retreat in the Himalaya Mountains and, in my mind after hearing his music, returned with his performance as a gift to the world. There is vision, nature and love in his melodies that transcend any perceived limit we may choose to put on life; age, rank, gender, or culture.

Having returned from L.A. after two weeks, you'd think I'd have found something different to leave in my CD player! This is music that can only enhance and add to experiences of life. I can play it soft through the night, during the evening or weekend throughout any task, or during the day while I'm at work, as my cat seems to even be more loving when I finally get home at night.

This CD may not rock your world, but it will definitely elevate it!

East & West Do Meet.......2003-06-26

This album is everything they say it is! With artists like, Chloe Goodchild, Bhagavan Das, Deva Premal, Jai Uttal, Gabrielle Roth, Boris Grebenshikov, DJ Cheb I Sabbah and Survana, how can it not be ... you have artists from different genres, background and traditions with one main focus, The Essence of Feminine Spirituality.

I don't know what I like more (or even if I can like one more than the other), the beats or the vocals. Deeply hypnotic and passionate.... I highly recommend this album.

Album Description

Breaking the barriers between Soul, Funk and Gospel, MichauX brings infectious hard driving rhythms and silky smooth vocals to deliver a message of love, peace and hope for a better future. This mixture of modern R&B and 70's Soul/Funk is comprised of 14 musicians from the Austin Texas area and is produced and recorded by MichauX and mastered by Tom Coyne, Sterling Sound, New York, NY. The Neo-Soul singer's style is often compared to that of Maxwell, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and The Isley Brothers.

MichauX's music carries a positive message in a language that anyone can relate to. He connects with today's generation in a very personal way, sharing his own life experience and how he overcame many obstacles.

He creates a symphony of sounds with each song and conveys a wide range of moods throughout the album. From smooth soul (All I Need), to Urban hip-hop (Hey Girl, Hey Playa), to funk and R&B (Restitution); the beat, pace, and rhythm of the music has the ability to stimulate and motivate.

When asked where his inspiration comes from MichauX says, "What motivates me is working with 'at risk' youth. I want to bring them a positive message of hope that will help keep them in school, away from drugs and a life of crime. If you enjoy the sounds of Maxwell, you will dig this kid. Smooth and sultry vocals with nice production... Pure neo-soul. I'd been looking for something new to satisfy my starving ears until the "Black Summer's Night" comes out and THIS hit the spot. Much love!

I don't know where this kid is from, but I know I'll be keepin' an eye out for more from Michaux.

The objective of South African-born Sharon Katz and the multiethnic Peace Train is to show that people of all races and religions can live together peacefully. It's a tall order for musicians of any country, much less those of Katz's homeland. On Imbizo, which translates as a "cultural gathering of hearts and minds," the politically active singer/guitarist/songwriter is single-minded in her call for unity even as she and the band create a varied repertoire. At times Peace Train doesn't sound all that different than Paul Simon's backing band from his Graceland album, and the group even includes members from Simon's touring band. At other times, the African-music-influenced rock and pop is a bit derivative. Katz and company are actually at their best when they step out of their comfort zone. "Simple Things in Life" is a jazzy duet between Katz, who sings and plays guitar, and trumpeter Matt Cappy that's as poignant as it is understated. The catchy reggae rhythm on "Why O Why" also works surprisingly well. --Tad Hendrickson
