5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-06-04

Another triumph for Anuna- this album incorporates more instruments than other albums, but it is done so tastefully and it really adds a whole new dimension to the crisp voices of Anuna.

Definitely worth a place in any music library!

5 out of 5 stars Different, but still superb.......2003-12-29

Unlike most of the albums Anuna has put out so far, most tracks on this album are for choir AND orchestra. The harmonies are definitely 20th century, but they are pleasing to the ear almost always add to the already excellent sound of the choir. Of particular note are the tracks "The Great Wood" (available for download on Anuna's site if you're curious to hear before buying) and the final track, "1901".

Although the sound may be different than what you have come to expect from previous albums, I would still recommend this one wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars another excellent cd by anuna.......2003-06-11

I bought this album when it was still only available in Ireland, and it was well worth the extra money then. Like Cynara and Deep Dead Blue, this CD has more modern music, including some songs composed by Anuna members, as well as the more traditional music they're known for. Perfect for studying or working to.

4 out of 5 stars Music of the people.......2005-04-23

On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27

Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting, mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.

Dominus Vobiscum.
Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30

It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.

Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-04-01

This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".

4 out of 5 stars Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07

I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

Evan Ziporyn: Frog's Eye

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Engaging new music for orchestra.......2006-12-22

Evan Ziporyn is gradually building an impressive discography of his strong and subtle compositions. These range from conventional Western ensembles (like the piano trio) to Balinese gamelan with electric guitar. But with the exception of the beautiful Ngaben (a memorial to those killed in the bombing of a nightclub on Bali in 2002), none of Ziporyn's orchestral works has been available until now. The four works on this new Cantatoupe CD are therefore most welcome, and each is further evidence that Ziporyn is one of America's strongest and most original compositional voices. I liked the playfulness of Frog's Eye, and the energy of Drill (a clarinet concerto with the composer as soloist), but War Chant may be the most compelling work here. There are also two songs with orchestra, and if I have any quibble with this CD, it's that Ziporyn treats the voice as another instrumental line...but then, so did Stravinsky and Copland. Another must for everyone interested in new music!

After two decades at the helm of London's premiere chamber-goth ensemble, Dead Can Dance, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard celebrated the century's end by parting ways and pursuing solo projects. Though less celebrated than his ethereal-voiced cohort, Perry's ability to create catchy musical pastiches from classical, world, and electronic elements is evident here on seductive tracks such as "Voyage of Bran" and "Archangel." A cover of Tim Buckley's "I Must Have Been Blind" suggests the influence behind Perry originals such as "Saturday¹s Child" and "Medusa," while cheerful tracks such as "Death Will Be My Bride" summon up the spirit of Jim Morrison. Although Perry and Gerrard's solo projects have yet to transcend their shared legacy, Eye of the Hunter is welcome reassurance that the dead still dance. --Bill Forman

Album Description

1999 solo debut from the former leader of Dead Can Dance. Eight tracks of emotional folk-blues & ballads, including 'S aturday's Child' and a cover of Tim Buckley's 'I Must Have Been Blind'.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not DCD, possibly the ghost of Tim Buckley.......2007-06-20

It's sorta sad but understandable that 90% of the Amazon reviews center on how much this album is not like Dead Can Dance. Admittedly the work Perry did within the DCD framework was incredible and I'm sympathetic to wanting more (at least we got a few new ones from their tour awhile back). But no, EYE OF THE HUNTER is not in the vein of DCD, although it's very recognizably Perry. It continues his homage to the style of many of Tim Buckley's ballads (including an outright cover of I MUST HAVE BEEN BLIND). They're gloomed up a bit more than Buckley usually did, but have the same dreamy atmosphere. Taken on it's own terms EYE OF THE HUNTER is good, not great. Knowing what he's capable of it feels a bit lazy (especially since it's all he's released since DCD's SPIRITCHASER). However, it's still very worthwhile and worth exploring.

3 out of 5 stars Not Dead Can Dance.......2007-06-20

Some good sounds on this, but he seems lost without his Dead Can Dance team, although his voice, Sinatra-like, was my personal favorite far above her yoddling jibberish. Still, a good addition to fans of Dead.

4 out of 5 stars Post Post Punk Alternative Dreary Blues.......2007-04-26

This album makes my limbs go limp which Dead Can Dance won't do. It's got a slower, lonelier sound than Dead Can Dance. It's earthy and dream-like as on an overcast day with patches of sun and a bit of starry nighttime latter on. As a solo record (and I am holding out that Dead Can Dance isn't really broken up)it shows Perry as the more down-to-earth member. Gerrard's made-up-language lyrics that often ascend to the heavens while very very cool, sometimes I wish she would use real non-western languages here and there..perhaps she does.
Nevertheless, here we have a great understated yet slick production with some great FX experimentation. It is a bit psychedelic, as a "mushroom trip through the moors" as another reviewer here says although with topics such as child abuse on "Archangel" and aging such as on "Saturday's Child" I wouldn't call it "trite" unless this reviewer himself has accomplished some great work of art that we need to know about.
Otherwise, more down headed and resigned sounding than Dead Can Dance. I found "The Captive Heart" to be a very romantic number that made me think of my lady although I'm not sure if this CD stands up to as many repeat listens as DCD does. I hope it does. I am very curious to hear what Mr. Perry does next as waiting for Gerrard to come back to studio recording with Dead Can Dance may take too long. He is a great talent and very unusual in this day and age where the vocalist actually sings and has lyrics that are even worth reading on the liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars This is truly the very best of dead can dance.......2006-03-22

Im a huge fan of Brendan Perry. If you loved Dead can Dance but could do without Lisa Gerrad this is the CD for you.

If you loved songs like "Enigma of the Absolute" and cried at the end of "Dont fade away" from the tword the within CD and if you quietly begged for more of Brendan on 12 string, you will love Eye of the hunter. Its all Brendan in his purest uninhibited and untainted beauty. No interuptions from Lisa on this one.

4 out of 5 stars DCD it is not.......2006-02-25

Well, I must first tell you that I am a huge DCD fan and have been for many, many years. With that said, I feel that this album does not reach the standard already set by DCD. I realize this is a solo project and may not be meant to even resemble DCD. I think it is safe to say however, that Brendan was shooting for the same style. Please don't take me wrong though... I do love the album and there a couple of songs that I would never want to be without.

I absolutely love this CD. Have other Tillman as well, he is a master.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD from the talented Martin Tillman.......2006-06-04

I love this CD! Those who may be familiar with Martin Tillman from his CDs with Michael Hoppe, The Poet and Afterglow, won't be disappointed with this CD of piano and cello music. Since first hearing him in 1997 on Hoppe's The Poet, I have been waiting for Tillman to record his own CD of cello music. Tillman, a classically trained cellist, plays both piano and cello on this multitrack CD.

The CD features, with the exception of one piece, Tillman's own compositions, and these are varied and interesting. Some are deep and brooding, as in Eileen, while others, bassalino and tangobay, are up-beat with latin rhythms. The piece, bachwards has a Bachian/jazz feel to it, with piano plucked cello and snare drum. My own favorite is white oleander, a very haunting piano and cello duet. Tillman's fine solo piano work is featured in, is it me or the moon passing. The piece february in mazuria was written while on a visit to his wife's native Poland and has a very classical feel to it. Tillman's own liner notes give us insight into his musical journey from Zurich to Los Angelus.

If you are looking for some cello music that is not classical, yet is soulfully brings out the qualities of this most wonderful stringed instrument, then this CD is worth buying. Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Fusion of modern and Egyptian/Arabic, works!.......2002-03-26

I have to approach this from a musical standpoint, since I'm a musician and not a belly dancer. (And a good thing too, who wants to see a 40 year old bald guy belly dance?)

Musically, what we have here is a fusion between Arabic music and more modern sounds. Ramzy uses traditional instruments along with the occasional synth and drum machine. At first I was bothered by the occasional intrusion of the synthesizer and the drum machines, but then as the music progressed I forgot they were there. Ramzy wants to introduce the modern elements, but he's pretty firm on keeping the Arabic element upfront. For the most part, this works, and it's quite possible to get caught up in it. He is a fantastic drummer, and all the musicians on here are more than competent.

I have to admit this doesn't attain quite the high level of spirituality and sensuality that more traditional Arabic music does, at least not for me, although "Aazab" comes very close. However, I'm not sure that's what Ramzy was aiming for. It seems that he's trying to bring Arabic music to a wider audience, as well as providing killer soundtracks for bellydancers everywhere, and in that he succeeded.

I personally wish the production was a bit less...perfect, I suppose, and that the musicians had gotten a little more carried away and a little less careful. There is a wildness that's essential to a lot of Arabic music that appeals deeply to me, and Ramzy only occasionally hits that wildness here.

But it's quite possible I'm expecting too much from this CD. It's also true, in spite of all I have said, that I listen to it and I like it, and find something to dig every time. So perhaps it would be best to ignore my reservations and listen to it for yourself. After all, whose opinion are you gonna take; mine, or the 40,000 or so gorgeous bellydancers who love Ramzy's music? I thought so. Me too.

5 out of 5 stars Belly Dancing.......2001-11-17

The problem with this soundtrack is the same with others I've purchased: You don't get all the songs on the soundtrack that you heard on the movie. There were at least two songs I heard on the movie that I bought this soundtrack for. There aren't on it. What a waste. The song playing while the bikers were in the bar and pulled a gun on the waitress was great and also wasn't on the CD. Since I didn't know the name of the song or the artist I couldn't know whether it was on the soundtrack or not. Now this soundtrack sets on the shelf. I will eventually sell it, if I can find anyone willing to pay good money for this joke of a soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars It would be 5 stars if not for sweet emotion.......2006-09-25

Thats wrong putting a Aerosmith song on a tribute album to STYX. No every other song on here is great but that just ruins it. If you want a tribute album to Styx get TOO MUCH TIME ON OUR HANDS: A TRIBUTE TO STYX that is The Worlds Greatest Trinute To Styx

5 out of 5 stars A wall of sound.......2005-11-25

I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Dolat-shahi twice now, and hope that I will have many more. The first time I saw him perform I had no idea what to expect, simply walking into a show billed as "Master of the Tar" - having no idea what a Tar was. Within seconds I was removed from my body and taken on an intense journey that I cannot retell without much more room. I think the show was only 45 minutes, but it have no real idea of time having passed other than the program. Truly amazing.

The instrument on this album, the tar, is a simple guitar-like instrument of a few strings. However, he can evoke such sound from those few strings. Emotion, intensity, flight, water, birds, cascades, chill heights and sonorous depth. Not to be missed.
