Captain Beefheart-weirdness and straight-on rock and roll highlight this mostly live album original released in 1975. Best when showcasing his evolving guitar skills and Terry Bozzio's thundering drums, Bongo Fury contains some of Zappa's more enduring songs, such as "Advanced Romance and "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy." The endless riff and blistering guitar solo of "Muffin Man" is one of the high points of Zappa's onstage career. "Goodnight Austin, Texas, wherever you are!" --Andrew Boscardin

4 out of 5 stars two big egos of the music era together.......2007-05-06

It's fun to have a bit more material with the voice of the beloved Captain Beefheart on it.
He and Zappa were childhood friends who in time grew to be more like a tired married couple.
There's a good video out there from the 90's that tells the tale of Zappa giving Beefheart this gig out of the kindness of his heart, the flipside of course is that Beefheart also gave Zappa a vocalist Par excellence.

It's a quirky mix of music and prose, but definitely more on the Zappa side of theatrical composition with electric instruments.

5 out of 5 stars That Prince of Foods, THE MUFFIN..........2007-04-05

This one's a real rarity in the FZ catalog for a number of reasons, the first and most obvious one being the partnership with Donnie Van V...the Captain. More important, however, is the rare hit and miss ratio of two of Zappa's trademark styles, those being comedy and no-nonsense, end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it guitar solos. In many of Franks' releases, one style ultimately wins out over the other...the comedy is top-heavy or it's an afterthought. Not here. This is Zappa's L.A. Pachuco doo-wop humor married to some of the most talented musicians he ever assembled under one roof. In addition to Frank's own fretboard pyrotechnics, we get Denny Walley on slide guitar. Add Napoleon Murphy Brock, George Duke, and Terry Bozzio and you have one of the greatest all-time "stamina" bands. I saw the Berkeley Community Theater leg of the "Bongo Fury" tour...unfortunately, Beefheart never shared the stage with FZ, but he did perform a mighty tasty "Orange Claw Hammer." Zappa tied his hair back into a ponytail and proclaimed "this is SERIOUS music" as he launched into an extended, brutal "Black Napkins." Brock prowled and stomped and roamed the stage like a werewolf under a full moon, honking brilliant solos from his sax. The same power is found on "Bongo Fury." In "Advance Romance," Zappa invites the Armadillo World Headquarters audience to "look what she did to Denny right now," as rips a beautifully aggressive solo, which blends into a firestorm from Zappa himself. In "Muffin Man"...well, what can I say? As impossible and ridiculous as it might be to attempt a "10 best FZ solos of all time" list, if you COULD, there'd have to be room for this one. From the "Mr. Tambourine Man" reference in "Debra Kadabra" to the interspersed weirdness of Captain Beefheart, this is one of the richest, most complex, most rewarding FZ albums of all time. If you are a fan of "Guitar Frank," grab this one.

5 out of 5 stars Zappa & Captain Beefheart dual madness............2007-02-25

Again Zappa produced a jewel with this album by allowing Captain Beefheart - who worked with him on "Hot Rats" in 1969 - to be full of unrestrained irreverence. The live performances are out of this world. I have had the chance to see Zappa twice in Paris in the seventies and Zappa had the audacity at one concert to tell the audience that we all looked liked rats from the stage.... I also saw him four times in the U.S. in the 80's. Zappa was a master conductor on stage. His band members had to keep a close eye on his hand-gestures and body postures at all times. At any moment, he would turn to his band and showed a specific hand-signal to tell them to immediately change the current beat to a "Weather Report" fast-pace beat. The guitar solos on this album are Vintage Zappa. He did not miss a note. I used to describe Zappa as a scientist of Music. He treated Music as if it was constantly evolving. He was never afraid of exploring new sounds and arrangements. That's why he could never be pinned down as a rock, blues, jazz, funk, punk or classical musician. He was all of it and none of it. His music was different because Zappa was unique. "Bongo Fury" allows us again to spend a wonderful moment with a Genius....

5 out of 5 stars "Witch Goddess of Lancaster Blvd!".......2006-08-05

I really, really like Bongo Fury. This is actually the second Zappa album I bought. My older brother bought "Sheik Yerbuti" home the week it was available & we both fell in love with it. Soon after I found myself flipping through the Zappa albums at the local "Record Bar" (remember them?) For some reason the one that caught my eye was "Bongo Fury". Having recently aquired a pair of bongos, I could relate to the title.
The album was one of my favorites from the first listen and I still have it, even though the cd version is what I listen to.
If you are already a Zappa/Beefheart fan then you know about this one- if you have never heard it, I would recommend you get it & immerse yourself in the madness! SAM WAS A BASKET CASE!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Bongorama.......2007-06-09

First heard this on a college radio station and thought it was a new re-mix club/dub mix that was the bomb. Scored it on Amazon only to find out it was the Original. Some cuts I think are great but the overall style is too repetitive with the bongo solos for all the songs. I think the purchase was worth it for Apache alone but many won't like the stylings of 70's funk with the Mancini like strings and the bongo flavorings. For collectors mostly.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER.......2007-01-27

FROM MICK JAGGER TO MARTIN SCORSESE THIS ALBUM HAS INSPIRED MORE PEOPLE THAN [PERHAPS] ANY EVER RECORDED. ALWAYS IMITATED , NEVER DUPLICATED THIS IS THE ONE.I AM SO HAPPY THAT IS FINALLY BACK IN RELEASE.

2 out of 5 stars Full Of Breaks.......2006-11-14

The Incredible Bongo Band is probably not a band most people have heard of, but one of their songs, "Apache" is one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop especially by old school acts of the 80's. Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Nas, The Geto Boys, The Ultramagnetic MC's, Grandmaster Flash, KRS-One, Kool Moe Dee and countless others have used the drum break from the song (The Sugarhill Gang had a minor hit with "Apache Rap"). The group wasn't really a group at all, but a studio concoction of session players who were quickly assembled in 1972 to round out a soundtrack album (the less than memorable The Thing With Two Heads) with two tracks. Those two tracks, "Bongo Rock" & "Bongolia", led to the full-length album Bongo Rock and the follow-up Return Of The Incredible Bongo Band. If you are a fan of 70's style funk music, then this is an album for you, but mostly it is only notable for the breaks some of the songs provided.

4 out of 5 stars Even more eccentric than the original!.......2007-01-21

I've always thought that "Mondo Bongo" was where Bob Geldolf and The Boomtown Rats started to slip, but the years have been kind to The Rats' fourth album. They were trying to grow out of the scene that originally spawned them, and I also began to wonder if their inability to crack the American market (after becoming superstars everywhere else) was wearing on them. It would explain the thoroughly sour tone of many of the album's best songs.

Both The Rats' native island and their commercial nemesis took it on the chin on "Mondo Bongo," with the "septic isle" of "Banana Republic" drawing the popular vote - the mix of reggae and Geldolf's angry lyrics was another huge melding of styles for the band and a number one single. As for America, the broadside of "it's Disneyland under martial law" in "Elephant's Graveyard" took a dour look at Florida's disintegration as a retirement paradise.

This is also where the eccentricities began to get into the way of the songs. "Please Don't Go" and the re-writing of "Under My Thumb" weren't really all that great to start with and haven't improved. "Fall Down" is almost Pink Floyd in temperament (and odd that a cover of Floyd's "Arnold Layne" is included). Scat singing on "Please Don't Go?" Yikes. There's something else I miss from all these CD's (since it was on the American LP) is The Rats' re-recording of "Up All Night." (Not the version on "V Deep" - the version I speak of is only available on an out-of-print American best of or Rhino Records "Just Can't Get Enough Volume 4.") But unlike others here, I don't have too much issue with the revised running order. "Mondo Bongo" was such an eclectic album that Geldolf's reorganizing the song sequence doesn't seem to really mangle the album's original mood.

Like on my review of "The Fine Art Of Surfacing," my main gripe about the new version of "Mondo Bongo" is the re-mastering seems to be too "hot." The drums on several of the songs compress out and distort to the point that, like on "Please Don't Go," the song clips off. Not a good thing.

3 out of 5 stars Not the same album. Revisionist however you look at it........2005-04-02

I've waited a long time for Mondo Bongo to be re-released on CD only to find this is far less enjoyable a listen than my vinyl copy.

This new running order simply doesn't flow well, no matter what explanation Bob Geldof gives in the new liner notes. There's just no need to tamper this much with an album. In addition, upon closer inspection fans of the original album will note the 10 second long dramatic pause is now missing in the final song proper, Cheerio. It simply goes from the ultimatum "well you'd better hurry up and say something or else I'm gonna go..." straight into the response "okay that's fine by me, cheerio". Amazing how the omission of a mere 10 seconds of silence can turn a once clever gem into a pointless ditty. (Oh well, at least they included the "cheerio" lyrics as opposed to the 1981 CD release which leaves those words out altogether, chopping the song before it can really end!)

The Boomtown Rats released a great album in the early-80s which they deserve to be remembered for. However, this new drastically altered remaster isn't that album. I'm no vinyl purist, but looks like you're going to have to hunt down the vinyl (and possibly a turntable) if you want to hear what really went down when this album came out...in a time when New Wave bands thought ska, reggae, and BONGOS were cool and put them right up front to kick off an album (hence the album title).

The only really great feature of this remastered version of Mondo Bongo is the lovingly-designed packaging complete with a full-color foldout mini poster. Too bad it's wasted on the crummy CD inside.

Possilbly the Boomtown Rats' 5-star album, but this release is another failure to get it right.

Cheerio.

4 out of 5 stars One of their more peculiar albums, weird new track order..........2005-03-26

Like four of the other remasters, this album's track order deviates from both the US AND UK releases of the album. Why? Good question...but that's why I remove a star.

Anyway, I'm writing this review to note, for the less informed, to correct/make notes on the other reviews which are incorrect in their claims about original versions of the albums/sources of tracks:

"Fall Down" WAS on the original LP...just not the North American version. Remember, though, this was an Irish band stationed in Ireland, and thus the UK versions are more closely tied to the band's actual desired order than the US versions (which typically just pushed the best-selling singles to the beginning of the album)

"Up All Night" was not omitted. It was originally on V Deep and not Mondo Bongo, insofar as UK releases (the more "accurate" ones)

"Whitehall 1212" WAS originally released on Mondo Bongo, and NOT Rat Tracks.

Not intending to pick fights or criticize, mind you, I'm simply obsessive about the original placement of non-album tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Hardly recognizable..........2005-03-20

Made in EU in 2005, Serial# 982-677-6, Playing Time 53:53

Most of lyrics enclosed...

If you're like me, you've been waiting to "retire" your vinyl pressing of this as soon as a CD version was made available.

Like all 6 re-releases of their albums, the remastering job is excellent! If you're reading this, you probably don't need a description of the genre of music (and talent) included.

Instead, I'll focus this somewhat brief review on the differences in content between the North American vinyl pressing and this CD issue:

a) the running order is completely different!
b) track 7 ("Fall Down") wasn't on LP (but was released on the "Rat Tracks" EP)
c) "Up All Night" has been omitted but will re-surface on the "V Deep" CD re-issue!
d) track 11 ("Whitehall 1212") was originally released on the "Rat Tracks" EP)
e) track 15 ("Arnold Layne") is a "real" bonus track and is indeed a PINK FLOYD original
f) track 16 is the live version of the album track, recorded in Portsmouth

The re-sequencing of the tracks makes this re-issue more eclectic than it originally was.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2005-03-11

I've beeen waiting over twenty years to get this album on CD. Not quite as good as The Fine Art of Surfacing, but definitely the second best Rats album in my opinion, though I know many fans disagree. The one disappointment is the re-arranging of the tracks for the CD. It just didn't sound right not having Mood Mambo start the album, but I'm already getting used to the new order.

5 out of 5 stars Favela = SLUM.......2007-01-31

The word Favela translates roughly to the english word Slum. The music on this CD is from one of the worlds biggest ghetto's with the worst social conditions. Some people do not like the rio funk music because it is "too simple"...THESE PEOPLE ARE POOOOOOR!!!! They are not recording in a industry standard, "over the top" studio with cutting edge gear...just the bare essentials and it translates incredibly. These recordings really communicate the intensity of the favela party where a good time is badly needed to enjoy life. Some of the realest music on earth. No fluff, just a party in the ghetto.

5 out of 5 stars A blast for the booty from Brazil.......2006-04-04

This music is fun! The music is based on big beat Miami Bass with lyrics shouted in Portuguese. Writing about it, it sounds like it would be an awful mish mash of stuff, but this music is great. It'll get the body moving--this is great party music or for rolling down the street. There's another compilation called "Rio Baile Funk" that also has a lot of this type of music. Both CDs have a few tracks that are on both, but overall both CDs cover slightly different territory in this original style of music from Brazil.

5 out of 5 stars funk brasileiro é o máximo.......2006-02-25

I loved this album. Just listening to it makes me wanna dance all night. It's awesome! Liricks are a little obsene but the sound is really catchy. My favorite performer is Bonde do Tigrão!!

5 out of 5 stars M.I.A./Diplo fans should pick this up.......2006-01-15

...one bad thing: After you listen to these outrageously raw beats from the streets of Brazil, "Arular" by M.I.A. will not sound as original as it did before. But, oh well, every one has their influences. This "Baile funk" stuff is awesome. Or "Rio Funk", either way, I beleive the word "favela" describes the parties where this type of music is played in Brazil.

By the way,...how in the world could a reviewer think all these songs sound the same? This stuff is all over the place. Every minute you're engaged and dancin it up in your car as the dj mixes up an entire UNIVERSE of beats. OKAY, I do confess, its a bit noisy and crazy. But its street music. I think it adds to the charm. The sound is similar to taking one step forward, and then two steps back... you wind up in a different place than you had expected. Though you can here that technology is lacking, it makes this mix all the more charming. The upbeat feel to this album is a spicey treat, and the Do-It-Yourself feel of old school electro is definitely present. There's Afrika Bambaata in the background in one track for sure.

This is street music, raw and real. Its got a DIY feel to it, but that is a good thing. Feels like you're there while djs are mixing it up all dirty in order to keep the place moving. Plenty of vocals (in Portegeuse?) thrown in to the layers of booty shaking rhythms keeps the feel ROWDY. And I mean rowdy... the MCs are screaming things in some other language. But after listening to all that Reggaeton on the radio, I like it.

Mind you, this isn't normal "electronica". Its definitely "urban" music. And sounds a bit 80s/90s. But, as I said before, its all part of its charm.

If you have heard of Diplo (who was on tour with M.I.A. when she first blew up), his Florida album features a track that is pure "Baile Funk"/"Rio Funk"/"Favela Beats": Diplo Rhythm feat. Sandra Melody, Vybz Cartel & Pantera Os Danadinho. Its an awesome track. Now I know where his influences are... RIGHT HERE!

Another great album from La mano Negra, the most "classical" one, great rock music and intelligence mix of another styles to make one of the best rock CD's in the nineties, very, very critical too occidental way of live (just check Welcome in Occident, Letter to the Censors and Out of Time Man
No really weak songs, (maybe "It's my heart")and great moments, as King of Bongo, Don't want you no more. This is the last of the band at complete and maybe their best too.

Well, I'm a fanatic of Mano Negra and now of Manu Chao. I've been hearing Mano Negra's music for more than two years. King of the Bongo tells Mano Negra's life in U.S.A. Their CD is a rebellion against the occidental culture using alternative music mixing with multicultural influences.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The originals, and still the best.......2006-04-01

This set is their first two albums they made for Attic Records, 'Walking on Sunshine' and the imaginatively titled 'Katrina and the Waves 2'. Half the songs from each album were re-recorded for their Capitol Records debut. Skip that cd, and get this instead.
The original albums hail back to the early days of rock and roll: 10 songs each and 1/2 hour long; songs about dancing, songs about love, more songs about dancing, more songs about love. What else is there? AND, there's not one clunker in the bunch.
The music is straightforward and catchy. The lyrics are deceptively simple: check out "She Loves to Groove" for example. You could have all the lyrics memorized by the second listen. Not a lot of rock and roll today does that. Katrina and the Waves never had pretensions about the music they were making, and god love 'em for that. Katrina is one of the most overlooked and underrated singer/shouters ever. Her voice is a force of nature.
As for the extra tracks, "That's Just The Woman In Me" is the best; again, deceptively simple lyrics and Katrina's soulful singing. The covers of "River Deep" and "Hearbeat" are...ok.
The back of the cd sums it up best: "This is guitar driven R&B rock ' roll. PLAY LOD."

4 out of 5 stars Overdue reissue of classic early '80s guitar pop.......2003-12-21

Purveyors of one of the ultimate summer singles, "Walking on Sunshine", Katrina And The Waves have been sadly marginalized, because that one song of is ubiquitous to this day. In some respects, the song was definitive, as it came from the classic KATW template -- meld Motown and power pop, get the band hopping and let Katrina Leskanich unleash her spectacular blue eyed soul vocals. While it's true that very few guitar pop bands ever have a massive hit, and thus, KATW already got more than similar bands ever dreamed of, it's equally true that they deserved so much more. Then again, the band came of age when many of the best power poppers could barely get the attention of the major labels -- The dB's first two albums only came out in England, for example. This context explains why the first two Katrina And The Waves albums, featured here on CD for the first time, only came out on Attic Records in Canada. They weren't even reissued after the band's success on major. That it took so long for them to come out again is a shame, as both albums are littered with fantastic songs, mostly from the pen of Kimberly Rew, who already knew undeserved obscurity from his tenure in The Soft Boys. Rew was (and still is) also an ace guitarist, as shown by the bubbling fretboard work that is evident throughout. So delight to the original versions of songs that appeared on the band's major label debut like "Sunshine", "Going Down to Liverpool", "Mexico", "Do You Want Crying", "Que Te Quiero" and "The Game of Love", which may be Rew's golden R & B songwriting moment, as it sure sounds like a Stax classic. Whether you prefer the original versions is up to you -- there's no incorrect preference. And if you only know the big hit album, well, there's plenty more tracks of that quality on here. "Spiderman" is a superb power pop song that grabs immediately, "She Loves to Groove" would have been a perfect song for Nick Lowe and Rockpile to cover, and "I Really Taught Me to Watusi" is rhumba-dumb fun. There are also some fine bonus tracks, including a live "Sunshine" and a smoking cover of "River Deep Mountain High", which, along with the Waves original "Cry for Me", serve as proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Leskanich was a top rank soul shouter.

5 out of 5 stars KATW Fans Will Want These Original Mixes.......2003-12-10

I don't know why it takes so long for some of these CD releases to appear. There were complications with this one. The liner notes say that that original masters were "disposed of" by Attic Records (why do people do such things?), but they did a nice job with the sound from the best available masters.

These mixes are a worthwhile alternative to the familiar ones on the "Katrina and the Waves" release on Capitol in 1985. I agree with the preference for this earlier version of "Going Down to Liverpool" from the Trowser Press Record Guide: "... but the second "Going Down to Liverpool" obliterates the atmosphere and the hooky melody of the original in an absurdly overheated arrangement." Of course, this song was also covered by the Bangles, but the original found on this release is still the best, IMHO.

The live performance video on the included DVD is a very nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars overlooked gems.......2003-11-20

i'm probably biased (been on a major katrina kick lately, for some reason) but this cd is just fantastic. it's an interesting contrast to the first u.s. katw cd in that even though many of the songs are the same the guitar parts aren't as pronounced and the production isn't as slick. but the tunes are still fantastic, upbeat masterpieces and katrina's voice is in fine form.

the bonus dvd is the real keeper though - simply the band ripping through about a dozen numbers in front of a studio audience. if you missed them when they were hot back in the day, seeing them here is a worthy consolation prize.

Album Description

Originally released in 1991 and out of print for the last several years. Propelled by the Top 40 Modern Rock hit, "The Sweater", this album is a ground-breaking tour de force of retro 60s mod grooves, torch songs, comedic vignettes, and indie rock eclecticism.

Featuring a who's who of Canadian indie (at the time) musicians; Bob Wiseman (Blue Rodeo), Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies), Tim Vesely & Dave Clark (Rheostatics), John Tucker (Land Of Giants), and the electronic grooves of Tom Third; this was a highly influential debut and a mainstay of early 90s college radio. This re-issue includes 3 bonus tracks, the complete lyrics, and the video for "The Sweater".

5 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Ive Mendes............2007-03-25

The first time I heard Ive sing was on Capoeira Love Affair by Mr. Hermano, but at the time I did not it was her, so if you have not heard this song yet, go out and look for it, you definitely will not be disappointed (this has nothing to do with this cd but she sings on the song, so check it out if your curious.). I came across Nao Vou Fugir on the Deluxe Edition of Erotic Lounge and I was seduced not only by the vocals, but by the structure and production style of the song as well. If the production on this cd sound a little familiar, as it did to me, that is because it was produced by the talented Robin Millar, who produced for Sade on their early releases. The songs on this cd vary from down-to mid-tempo, which is perfect for lounging or even those special after dark moments. As I mentioned before, her collaborative work with Mr. Hermano is worth taking a listen, Capoeira Love Affair, Como Um Sol, and Jugando Con Fuego are all available on various compilations. Ive also collaborates with Robin Millar on his solo cd entitled "Kiss and Tell", although it is only for two songs, regardless it is a great cd. Overall this cd is a notable first release from Ive, hopefully she will release her second album soon.

3 out of 5 stars Very good Bosa Nova singer.......2007-01-12

I've purchased this album because I liked her song "Nao Vou Fugir" in the Siddharta: Spirit of Buddha-bar Vol. 3. Few songs in this album are very nice, if you like Bebel Gilberto and other traditional Bosa Nova music.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DEBUT ALBUM BY A GREAT DIVA - - - - -- - - - - .......2004-11-30

This Debut Album is full of surprises; first of all and perhaps the most important aspect of this recording is Ive's superb voice; it's perfect for her style (pop/smooth jazz).
The phrasing, the tempo, the compositions, eveything in this album guarantees you a delightful experience.
And the video??............... well, if you perceive the vocal hues, you can imagine the video.
Don't miss this gem from the wonderful realm of Brazilian Music.

5 out of 5 stars Clooney: Her songs for children.......2007-05-20

When I was a child in the 1950's, my parents bought me a 78 RPM record of RoseMary Clooney's, "Kitty Kats' Party". On the flip side was, "Teddy Bears' Picnic". I still have that 78 RPM vinyl record. But it is so scratched up, all you hear is pops, crackles & background hiss.

So, for many years, I hoped the industry would put out her, "For Children Only". They finally did. And it has all the background instrumentation that was barely audible on my record. Pristine sound! I am delighted to recommend this wonderful children's music CD. You won't be disappointed!

Bill Burgess, one satisfied customer.

3 out of 5 stars three classic children's albums live again!.......2007-04-16

This disc from DRG features three classic children's albums from the 1950s, all ready to charm and entertain a whole new generation (whilst allowing those of a certain age to re-discover them).

CLOONEY TUNES was a 1957 re-package of novelty and kiddie singles originally recorded by Rosemary Clooney between 1950-54, her early years with Columbia Records. Clooney's delightful touch and spin on such songs as "The Land of Hatchy Milatchy", "Little Sally One-Shoe", "Le petit cordonnier (The Little Shoemaker)"; and "The Syncopated Clock" will appeal to all ages, purely due to the verve and feeling of Clooney's vocals. In all of her ventures, she never gave short of 110%, and this album is of course no exception.

BONGO, part of the Disney compilation movie "Fun and Fancy Free", featured Dinah Shore serving as the Narrator and voicing the lead role of Bongo, a performing circus bear. Shore brings her breezy persona to add a special touch to "Bongo", and a rare outtake (included as a bonus track) allows us some extra time to appreciate Shore's performance.

THE ADVENTURES OF PICCOLO, SAXIE AND COMPANY was a fantastic kiddie album from Victor Borge, the legendary comedy musician who brought the classics to the masses in an entirely new light. Borge adapted and supervised everything on this album. Children are encouraged to learn about and appreciate the various classical music instruments, whilst enjoying Borge as he tells the story.

A bargain price, too. For anyone who remembers these classic recordings, this CD will be a charming reminder of simpler times, and for a new generation it will be a great surprise and delight.

5 out of 5 stars Rosemary Clooney Is Wonderful.......2006-01-15

This is a wonderful album, featuring some of Rosemary Clooney's often overlooked songs which were deemed "childish". However, they are still treasures and I am very happy to own this on CD. I am particularly fond of "On the Good Ship Lollipop". Rosemary's vocals are as strong as ever on this album, and it is very soothing to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Memories.......2005-08-12

I grew up with this music. I still have the record albumn but it is scratched. I just bought 3 copies to give to grand babies. A wonderful CD for small children. I think I was 4 years old when I was listening to mine. I had a small turntable in a case all my own. I played this music over and over and knew every word to each song.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic .......2005-08-02

My mom grew up with this album, and made a copy of it for me when I had my daughter. Now my four year old loves it and we both know all the words. It's a great contrast to all the hyper-active overly-busy kid's music made today. It's so light and happy and fun. It's great!

4 out of 5 stars psychobilly romper room stomp.......2006-06-05

I have been listening to the "cemetary shoes" album. Okay now be warned before you rush into Johnny he is considered to be in the Genre of "PSYCHOBILLY" so if you do not have at least a passsing appreciation of Rockabilly, punk, goth, and alt country. So don't blame me if he scares the hell out of you or you just don't get it, but if you can get past any prejudices or dislikes you initially have of the music and really listen to the man, he has something to say and a very unique way of saying it. you can hear a few samples of Johnny on his website at www.johnnydowd.com Here are the lyrics to one of his songs that I really like the words to,

Billy Blu

A crooked little man / lives in the underground
Sometimes he goes up / but mostly he stays down

People call him Billy / William is his name
In the coming darkness / he's the keeper of the flame

He repairs radios / with alien transistors
Cosmic commnication / between brothers and sisters

He has information / unavailable to most
He converses with angels / and sleeps with ghosts

Silence is a sadness / a bird with a song
Billy is a sailor / between right and wrong

A world of light and promise / is beyond his memory
In the present he is occupied / preparing for eternity

Lucifer is coming / don't let the children hear
The devil's in the wood pile / judgment day is near

Things that seem simple / are extremely complicated
When you scratch the surface / of things gold-plated

© Johnny Dowd

I hope the more adventurous of you take a listen and give him half a chance and those less adventurous look at all the pictures of his pretty face (well at least that was the one good thing one young lady could find about him). On another interesting note about Johnny he didn't record his first album until he was 50 years old. Well guess I can't complain I didn't put out my first book until I was 34, and I had twenty odd years of material back logged. Which we can really blame on Bob because I really didn't think much of the "bits" I wrote until I heard SBR and I thought man I want to make statements like that. I look at Johnny's lyrics and it so often reminds me of the ways that I string words together. So take a listen, check out what he says, and always keep an open mind, remember don't judge a book by it's cover (or a book of poetry by it's title).

2 out of 5 stars Meh........2004-11-12

Man oh man...you know I love JD, but this album is sort of making me question me faith. I question whether two stars is really fair, but I gave three to The Pawnbroker's Wife, and this is definitely inferior to that one, so that's what it's getting. The most obvious disappointment here--and I think most fans would agree with me on this--is the absence of the immaculate Kim Sherwood-Caso's vocal talents. This was always a big part of the appeal of any Dowd album; she made good songs into stunning songs, and I suspect that, even if the ones here aren't as good as usual, she could have partially redeemed some of them. I certainly hope the two of them haven't had some sort of falling out, and that we'll hear more of her in future Dowd recordings.

Here's what's good about this album: the frenzied 'Garden of Delights.' I would say that this is the one song here that approaches classic status; an unnervingly intense tale of murder/suicide. Also pretty good: 'Wedding Dress,' with its entertaining southern gothic lyric (maybe Dowd should write books). That and 'Brother Jim' have a gospel feel to them (even if one's about a crossdressing butcher and the other a clerical murderer). 'Whisper in the Nag's Ear' might be okay on its own, but it just seems pointlessly overdone compared to the spare original version on Pictures From Life's Other Side.

But...most of the songs are just kind of there. Not unpleasant to listen to, but not exactly exciting either. I expect a lot more from the guy who wrote 'Worried Mind' and 'Hell or High Water.' Better luck next time.

5 out of 5 stars Clever, smart, interesting music.......2004-11-09

Johnny Dowd makes me appreciate having ears to hear with and a mind to think with. Here is a man who, in a just world, would enjoy the success that more commercial musicians do today; that he does not is a real crime (then again, the world's loss is his fans' gain). His music is deep, dark and thoughtful, but well crafted, like an Alfred Hitchcock film. The tunes take some getting used to, as does his voice, because they cover material not usually associated with today's homogenized and emasculated pop and radio scene. But like most acquired tastes, you wonder how you ever got along without it. He writes music like the moon casts shadows, makes you look over your shoulder, and consider your fate. His albums, including his recent, Cemetary Shoes, deal with topics from the seamy side of life, a portion of the world that is anathema to the Britneys, the Jessicas, and the other pop tarts of music. If you appreciate artistry, thought and challenge, check out the Dowd catalog. Stretch your imagination a little. Take a chance on his music and experience an enveloping warmth that is cognition and emotion melding.
