Beautiful.......2005-02-07

The Aka Pygmy group was recorded in Teldex Studio Berlin, rather than in the field as usual, and thus the recording features the clearest and most beautiful Pygmy music I have heard.

Aimard's performance of Ligeti's Etudes is also amazing, and would be highly preferable to Frederick Ullen's recordings if complete.

Reich is somewhat neglected for lack of piano works, with Music for Pieces of Wood being adapted to piano.

The liner notes, by musical director Simha Arom, Aimard, Ligeti, and Reich are far more imformative than most, explaining the conception of the disc and features of all three musics.

If you like experiments..........2003-06-24

...then this is the right place to start. And if you like cross-overs, this is one of the more laudable efforts to consider.

The basic idea behind this CD is brilliant: An exciting confrontation really, a comparison, between contemporary culture and rhythms, and indegenious ones from a thousands of years ago...! Little has changed, the cynic would say, however, but we all know,so much has changed. Pierre-Laurand Aimard plays Ligeti and Reich very dark, like a rich french coffee, but with tempo and a kick, and still with mysticism which is very very black. It's hard to imagine, but the piano actually CAN do these things, and it requires a master like him here to drive it to its full potential. Ligeti's comments range from the extravagant to the funny.

What I like most about this CD ist the fact that intends to be completely uncommercial. What a miracle in today's world full of cross-over pressure (from the labels), commerce and bombast, and therefore, by all means, go and get this CD, and be it just to promote art before the dictate of money, money and more money...!

Just a superb trio recording by Randy Weston, at age 80, playing his greatest hits. Fantastic rhythm section, especially the bassist, who uses the bass in the fashion of an African rhythm instrument. Weston's forceful playing is undiminished by age, and he offers fresh takes on his famous pieces. Topped by superb recording quality, this CD is a winner.

plus that he has blessed us with his exceptional music,
riveting performances, and wondrous recordings.
LITTLE NILES, UHURU AFRIKA, IN THE SPIRITS OF
OUR ANCESTORS, and MARRAKECH IN THE COOL OF THE
EVENING are among the many classics by which
this Tutsi-sized champion of the Black aesthetic has
brought the intense virtuosity of African American
genius, and the insistent diversity of African legacy,
together to form a highly personal expression which
continues to inspire entire generations, uplifting the
world.
In the auspices of his 80th year, the Brooklyn-born
grandmaster strides forth with his most powerful and
personal album to date. Fresh from the independent
Random Chance Records, ZEP TEPI is Brother
Weston at his most culturally astute, spiritually
focused, and emotionally open. The thunder has
never resounded more deeply, nor has the lightning
struck more dearly than it does here.

His first trio album in a very long time, ZEP TEPI
steps boldly forth with the strongly dancing sound
which is a Weston trademark. Engineer Tom
Berkeley is to be commended for astutely capturing
the depth, dimension and impact of this unique sound
as none have done before. Artist Ogandube Fayomi
provides the album's impeccably panoramic cover
illustration and photos, set to fine balance by the
jacket layout and design of Minor Swing Graphics'
Ed McConnell.
These and others form an impeccable team which,
through the production of Paul West, makes things
far easier for the artists to get straight to the
aesthetic business at hand.

Setting this recording into sterling excellence, we find
bassist Alex Blake strutting, strumming, and singing his
way through grand scapes of lustrous melody. Meeting
Weston's every touch with a supple grasp all his own,
Blake stirs the imagination with his swift, sure polytonal
rhapsodies, able to turn rhythm and groove on the
proverbial dime! As astonishing is the gripping subtlety
of percussionist Neil Clarke. Avoiding the traditional
trap set, his sifting harmonic eye and ear provides an
emancipating force which complements Weston with
chromatic tapestries of multicultural splendor.
Thus, ZEP TEPI is a hearty voyage from the Nile to
the Delta, Blues to Bop and swinging about, beyond
and within.

Bask in the jubilation of "African Sunrise", and the
penetrating glow of "The Healers", as you gather
the motion of your odyssey across solemn earth and
vibrant rainbow. Enter the brisk, quenching jet stream
boiled to a fine brew in "Portrait Of Frank Edward
Weston", a tribute to Weston's Africa-conscious
father first heard (and with Blake!) in a concert
recording 30 years ago.
Long-acknowledged landmarks "Berkshire Blues"
and "Hi-Fly" (here spelled "High Fly") are given fresh
readings which prance and prowl with sophisticated fire.
Call and response are richly enacted throughout this
session, and all the brothers are phenomenal.

At the heart of this bountiful offering, we find the man,
his piano, and a hearty song to sing. Here, two of
Weston's most beguiling solo performances sing
straight to the soul, resonating with radiance and
a smile. "Route Of The Nile" shimmers with a lazy
sway, frequently rocking you to and fro in a
comforting ride on the streams of a broader
history. "Ballad For T" is a tantalizing tribute
to the immortal Thelonious Monk, spun with all
the charm, wit, mysterioso and wonder that Monk
could touch us with.
Carrying the memory of that touch firm in his own
special grasp, Weston delivers the distant and the
down home to your front door.

ZEP TEPI joyously begins with the most
celebratory rendition of the epic "Blue Moses"
ever recorded. Listen to Weston ruminate and
resonate his perceptions through the keys, joined
by Blake tapping into sonorities akin to Mali-
born storytellers and Mississippi troubadours, as
Clarke enters the ritual with his own percolating
summons which fires the Holy Call. Griots have
much to say.
Journey's end is equally joyous, Guy Warren's
"Love, The Mystery Of" performed with deep,
playful passion as its instrumental high points
ease into the sweet vocal chant of communal prayer
in purest invocation - no frills needed and no dogma
allowed!

Lesson and sermon consummated, it is deepest
Wisdom which beckons us on. Character is the
candle which illuminates the wisdom, and the
art. The glow of that candle is strong and
warming in the timeless call of ZEP TEPI.

Album Description

This recording leaves the listener breathless and astounded by the musical richness of this small area of Africa. In these performances from remote areas of central Ghana, the collective musical genius of everyday farmers, fisher-folk, traders, and civil servants bursts forth. Their singing and chanting moves through a colorful palette of instruments including water drums, rectangular frame drums, side-blown horns, and brass bands. Clear, penetrating sounds of metal instruments offset by complex drumming patterns are framed by haunting vocals. Listeners are immersed in a kaleidoscope of sound. Thirteen tracks and 28 page booklet including extensive notes and photos. This is the only commercially available recording of Akan music.

Great Disc.......2007-06-30

This is a great disc. I whole heartedly review with the former reviewer -- there is so much diversity to just the music of Ghana alone that there is no way to classify it all under one category. So you will need to stretch out and purchase a bunch of different discs with various different styles. This is a good one.

More great music from Ghana. .......2004-11-20

This is a disc completely worthy of your money and time. In case you have family, historical, and/or geographical reasons for wanting to know, the music on this disc is from Ghana's Central Region (not actually in the center of Ghana though, "Central Region" is the name of... for lack of a better term... a state in Ghana). The music is by (and from their areas of the Central Region) Assin, Efutu, Denkyira, and Fante peoples. All are Akan groups except the Efutu, "whose languages belong to the Guan cluster of the Kwa branch". Obviously I got this from the liner-notes, as I am no expert on all the many... and there are MANY... different languages and cultures of Ghana.

As for the music itself, I've had this disc for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it more with each listen. It is a very fine collection of recordings! I didn't get to the liner-notes until yesterday. It was interesting to find out that the Efutu are not Akan, since I had already noticed a distinct difference between the feel of their music and the other (although also differing) musics here. For those with some hip-hop interest, the Efutu track here makes me feel like they are playing some sort of ancient ancestor of a Timbaland beat. I like it alot. =)

There is alot for which to be thankful on this disc, and if you've ever stumbled upon my reviews for a few other cds from Ghana (the Master Drummers of Dagbon 1 & 2, and the Master Fiddlers of Dagbon), you'll be interested in knowing that this disc is completely different from those. Unfortunately, oftentimes things are lumped under the monolithic label of being "African music", but that is so broad as to be almost meaningless, considering the degree of musical diversity even in just one small country like Ghana. If you have the Masters discs I just mentioned, and you're worried about buying this one and feeling like it'd just be more of the same, don't worry. This is a whole other world.

The singing here has a much more organized feel than that on the Masters discs. Also, this disc always has larger groups of singers. It is more of a central feature of the music as well. Some lovely "chorus" vocals, sometimes in the form of interplay with the drumming. What you'll think of the brass band tracks (just a couple), I do not know. I like them, but I'm a weirdo. The first one strikes me almost as William Parker-ish orchestrations of his interpretation of the timbre of a bleating goat. I mean that in a good way. Also the percussion on that track is fantastic! I'm not sure how they are getting this tone, but it's like controlled, perfectly timed fireworks exploding in the distance.

Rather than rambling further, I will wrap this up by saying you probably didn't stumble on this cd by accident, so this sort of thing already interests you. Go ahead and pick this one up because I'm sure you're going to love it.

1979 field recordings from the Akan coastal areas of Ghana.......2004-03-09

Field recordings of Akan folk music from the Central and Western Regions of Ghana made by ethnomusicologist Roger Vetter in 1979. In this respect the disk is more narrowly homogeneous than some similar ones: only the Central and Western Regions are represented, although the bulk of the Akan population of Ghana lives in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. And, obviously, if it is a disk of Akan music, it does not include music produced by other ethnic groups in Ghana.

What the disk lacks in geographical and ethnic diversity, it makes up in stylistic reach. The music in these recordings is played by non-professional and semi-professional players, and although most of the music is quite traditional (i.e. shows little European influence) some tracks include instruments that originated outside Africa such as the tuba or the electric guitar, and some of the repertoire including waltzes and gospel music show a Western influence transmogrified in the local milieu. In this regard the recordings are authentic: the variety of music produced for local performance and consumption in the Akan coastal regions of Ghana was (and remains) varied, reflecting a variety of cultural uses and influences. While most of the music on this disk was meant for dancing, one of the most interesting tracks is a talking drum piece in which the message is not only played but recited, allowing one to hear the translation from speech to drumming. The accompanying booklet documenting the cultural background, the players, their instruments, and the various musical styles is highly informative.

Cool Techno-Tribal Groove.......2005-03-01

Wow ! This is a real departure from Zingaia's earlier releases and I love where they take me on this new musical adventure. Super cool techno-tribal beats, world rythyms and sampled voices from Africa and the Near and Far East blend beautifully. This release really transports me into a whole other world. While I really love the vocals from Abbi Spinner and Katlyn Breene from the previous releases, this new drum heavy trance inducing excursion from Zingaia is a complete a joy and an amazing listening experience.

Dissapointing!.......2005-02-16

I might like this album better if I didn't already have a fairly large collection of albums by Putamayo World Music which are much better than this! The reason I mention that is that this album reminds of the things that company releases, just not nearly as good.

I have both of their other releases which are superb! They are all about Sacred Sex and praise the Lady and the Lord. This album is bland and boring compared to the other two. The only good thing I can really find to say about it is that it might be enjoyable to drum along with it.

However, I have several other albums I like better which are also good for drumming along with. If thier next album isn't any better I will have to revise my opinion of Zingaia!

Soles on Earth is Out of this World!!!.......2004-10-27

This latest release by Zingaia (their third) is vastly different than their previous releases, both of which I absolutely love. Where their first release "Beneath the Veil" is a trance journey into the seductive heart of the Goddess, and their second release "Dancers of Twilight" featuring the alluring vocals of Abbi Spinner, further develops the original theme, deepening and expanding the voyage into musical spirit; with their latest release "Soles on Earth" Michael & Katlyn Breene and crew launch into a tribal poly-rhythmic trance dance groove that is no less than phenomenal. Middle Eastern, East Indian and African rhythms combine with sampled vocals from around the world to produce an album that sets the mind, body and spirit free to dance joyously to the pulsing rhythms of life. Definitively the most eclectic of their releases yet, Soles on Earth will stir your soul and get your feet moving. I give it my highest recommendation.

One thing I have always loved about African church music is its joyfulness. (Another favorite of mine was the original Missa Luba which is no longer available unfortunately). The chant in this recording is fantastic. I love it!

Wonderfully peaceful, meditative franco-senegalese fusion.......2002-10-22

I was lucky enough to visit the monks of Keur Moussa Abbey in Senegal in the early 1980s. Coming from 18 months living in the devoutly muslim far northern part of the country, it was quite surreal to wander around the grounds of the abbey and listen to the christian liturgical kora music coming from this group of african and european monks. A wonderful compliment to your Baaba Maal and Yousou NDour CDs!

Beautiful, Serene and Unique.......2001-12-29

Imagine Gregorian chant sung in French and Senegalese to the rhythms of modern Africa and you have a vague idea of how wonderful this CD is. Sometimes driving, sometimes sweetly lyrical, it's not particularly religious music (unless you want it to be). It is music that will calm you, thrill you, and transport you to another place, whatever place you're in. Thanks to Trance Planet for turning me on to the monks of Keur Moussa.

This is a fabulous double CD Album. The lyrics are beautifully composed and the music is fantastic. AFter a long day, this is a great album to put on and enjoy some relaxing music. The songs have an international mix from Lounge to mediterranean flavour to them.

Finally, the lady that sings on this album has a beautiful voice.

She sounds just as great live as she does on the CD.

Sadly, the lack of description here on amazon does not do the album justice.
