Album Description
Outside Austin, Texas, a 53-year-old man sleeps to the melody of four radios, three televisions, two amps, a radio scanner, and a Casio keyboard, all screeching at the same time. Loudly. He has three teeth and his hair is matted into one huge dreadlock. This is the story of Roky Erickson: manic frontman for the legendary band The 13th Floor Elevators, creators of psychedelic music and muse to Janis Joplin. Known for his colossal heroin & LSD binges, struggles with schizophrenia, and an unthinkable term at Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Roky went missing from the world.
YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME is a disturbingly intimate portrait of an imploding family and the struggle between modernized medicine and religion and reveals the shocking & triumphant truth behind one of Rock's great mysteries.
YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME features classic songs from the 13th Floor Elevators, Roky Erickson and the Aliens, and gripping solo acoustic performances from Roky, available exclusively on this soundtrack.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The material on this incandescent release evokes the Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal's previous acoustic stunners, Djam Leeli and Baayo. Maal's piercingly gorgeous, stratospheric Islamic wailing soars over melodies constructed along austere yet sensuous lines as he sings of Africa's imminent heyday, romantic love, and ancient tales. He interacts with constantly shifting strands of song fashioned by guitarists Mansour Seck (Maal's best friend from childhood, who also sings second voice) and Kante Manfila, plus the nimble-fingered kora, or West African harp, of Kaouding Cissokho. The lead trio ripples and leaps among woodsy balafons (xylophones), rattling and swooping talking drums and sabar percussion, and resonant, gutty plucked strings. The ambiance recalls Maal's legendary small-venue live performances or dusk in a small Fulani village, where musicians who have played together all their lives still surprise each other while everybody else sings along. Seasoned fans and newcomers alike will be challenged, astonished, and delighted. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
Following on from the success of his 1998 album Nomad Soul with it's state of the art fusions and collaborations, Missing You (Mi Yeewni) presents Baaba Maal focusing on the acoustic, poetic side of his heritage. Baaba Maal is a world renowned artist and spokesperson for Africa, and on this release he remains true to himself - it is passionate and honest, simple and complex, traditional and contemporary. 11 tracks. 2001 release.Customer Reviews:
SUBLIME SENEGALESE MUSIC!.......2004-06-22
Back to the Basics.......2003-06-19
Senegalese music has become known for its aggressive fusion with western music (particularly French). Maal explored the fusion genre a bit in "Nomad Soul" but didn't seem entirely comfortable there. With "Missing You" he returns to his roots, his basic sound heard before in albums such as "Baayo," and it is here that he thrives.
"Missing You" reminds us of where Senegalese music (and much of African music) came from. The feel is of a night where friends have gathered after dinner to calmly play together. The production is decidedly low-tech, Maal's distinctive vibratto voice accompanied by kora, guitar, balafones, drums, and several backup singers. The music is always light, airy, and folky - very organic and true.
The possible knock against this album is that the songs start to all sound the same. But then "Missing You" is not meant to excite and impress, its purpose is to connect and reassure and it never disappoints in that. It is excellent after-dinner music. Next time friends are over, put aside the standard American folk fare and put some Baaba Maal in for an extremely pleasant change.

All this....on a single? Rock on!.......2006-06-14
Ignore the single. Listen to the B-Sides.......2006-06-02
The version of "Disintegration" included is the best performance of the song I've ever heard. Starting off with a random guitar riff, and exploding into a quicker, stronger version of the song, it's amazing to listen to with headphones on. "Fascination Street" is always a ROCKING live tune. I'm glad they included "Last Dance" and "Prayers For Rain" as well, since they're not as well-known as other songs from the album.
One word of warning, there's a two second glitch in the middle of "Last Dance." I've looked into it, and it's apparently in quite a few copies of the US Pictures of You single. It's nothing big, and certainly doesn't take away from the killer performances available on the disc.
Trust me, if you want to hear The Cure at the top of their live game, buy this. It's short and sweet.
Almost Perfect.......2006-04-22
Great Single with Oustanding Extra Tracks.......2003-06-02
"Pictures of You", the outstanding track of "Desintegration" shows up here in a slightly different (remixed) version from the album and, more importantly, not the full length version, reason I cannot rate this 5 stars.
The extra tracks, though, are outstanding. They contain live versions of "Last Dance", "Fascination Street" (since then a concert fave), an outstanding "Prayers for Rain", and last but not least an 8 min. live version of the title track of "Disintegration". Just fab.
F.A.N.-T.A.S.T.I.C........2002-05-19
Specially the album version which is the full-length. What I don't understand is WHY the extended remix is skipped on this one?!?! It's released only on the vinyl version, so get that one... I like the live versions but (unlike the other 3 single CD's from Disintegration) here we miss the EXTENDED REMIX VERSION!!!

Welcome Back PJBE.......2001-10-19
The remastering is first rate and you can't beat the 2-fer pricing. Get this set while its available because the wait for more will at best be a long one. Thankfully, I still have most of the PJBE recordings on vinyl and a good turntable for playing them. But I would still be near the head of the line to snatch up any subsequent reissues. Years ago I saw several of their recordings on cd, but foolishly passed on them, thinking they would be in circulation for awhile. Silly me. Like I said, grab this before they post the infamous notice "no longer available."
When the PJBE made it's first American tour back in the 70s I was already a huge fan. I went to hear them play, never expecting the concert to sound as good as the recordings. They opened with the Tylman Susato Renaissance Suite and their playing immediately blew away any Memorex memories of their recordings. Unfortunately, we will never again hear live such virtuosity and musicianship. The recordings DO serve as a fine memory of the first and foremost brass ensemble.
Great start! Now where is the rest?.......2001-05-31
Where are their landmark recordings of such works as the Hindemith works for brass ensembles: Concert music for strings and brass, Morgenmusik for brass, Concert music for piano, brass and harps which they played flawlessly?
Where is their outstanding recording of the Gunther Schuller Symphony for Brass?
Please, Decca, give us more of the full course, not merely the teasers and encores.

GREAT CHRISTMAS MUSIC.......2007-01-10
Fresh stuff --- for Christmas, anyway........2005-12-23
Yes, yes, they dig up some old standards, "Sleigh Ride" included. And while we don't really need another recording of it, at least it's a NEW recording, with (to my amateur ears) some detectable Lockhartness in it. The other "traditional" tracks include solo vocal settings of "O Holy Night" and "Do You Hear What I Hear", plus others.
The fresher stuff is what makes the album worth the price. The Joy to the World arrangement by Randol Alan Bass is fantastic -- which is remarkable, since most Joy to the World arrangements are the very definition of Christmas cliché. "Songs from the Hill Folk: Carols of Appalachia" is yet another Christmas medley, but it's a GOOD one, and its set of tunes is good a mix of sounds as well as of familiarity. "Kije Takes a Ride" is a jazz version of a Prokofiev tune that only orchestral buffs are likely to know, from a film that only hard-core film buffs are likely to have heard of. (But it's still unmistakeably Christmas.) "Winter Weather Medley" is a clever mix of three popsier tunes; it's got some weak spots, but it's a keeper nonetheless. "Joy!" is the Sebesky jazzish medley that was the "centerpiece" of "Holiday at Pops!" a few years back. It's nice, and most people eat it up. (I personally think it needs work, but I'm picky with stuff that tries to be jazz.) And the last track is "Happy Holidays", a straightforward arrangement of the Manhattan Transfer chart. Nothin' fancy, but a very listenable specimen of orchestral jazz (which is usually awful).
As far as recording quality goes, I /think/ you can tell that they're under their own label now, and aren't having their sessions mixed by guys from Sony anymore. But almost all the places this is detectable, it's not egregious at all -- in fact, it almost makes me think it's a superior recording model. (Almost.)
Overall, you're likely to have your own set of skippable tracks and repeat-'em-over-and-over tracks. But I think, for anyone curious enough to read these reviews in the first place, you won't go wrong for your money with "Sleigh Ride".
A Great Pops Companion CD.......2005-12-19
This disc has the new sound of the Pops under Lockhart's direction. There are new arrangements that are fresh and lively, and bound to become future "classic" Pops favorites. There is a mix of the traditional (the arrangement of "Joy to the World" "O Holy Night" and the famous chorus from Handel's MESSIAH "Hallelujah." The original "Kije Takes a Sleigh Ride" based on the "Troika" Prokofiev's LT. KIJE. There are three medleys: one of winter weather songs, a second of general holiday songs, and a third called JOY which is an addictive arrangement of Christmas carols. Any time I listen to this disc I find myself listening to this track again and again.
I'm giving these recording five stars due to the quality of the musical performances. It is a flawless set, but for me it would be a supplementary Boston Pops Christmas disc. The first I'd select would be any of the discs under the direction of Arthur Fielder that include Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival," Leopold Mozart's "Sleigh Ride" and Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" without vocals, and the classic Pops renditions of "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," "Santa Claus is Coming To Town," "Winter Wonderland" and "The Toy Trumpet." I'd also purchase William's JOY TO THE WORLD which includes some of his tracks from HOME ALONE and Lockhart's HOLIDAY POPS. These recordings give a true Pops Christmas. SLEIGH RIDE would be a companion CD, but like all Pops CD's, it's a great investment.

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:

Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12
No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.
The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.

My new favorite cd.......2006-05-10
sonic film noir.......2005-10-11
If you're a newcomer to the music of Baltimore's Lake Trout, you might be immediately tempted to envision episodes of Phish-y jams. It's too bad the band's moniker lends itself to such misconceptions, but if there are any lingering doubts as to whether or not Lake Trout should be left under the "jam band" category, their fifth studio release, Not Them You, should easily dispel them.
Similar to its predecessor, Another One Lost, Not Them You opens with a spine-tingling sound effect segue into distorted guitar. In this case, the first few guitar notes and percussionist strokes of the opener "Shiny Wrapper" are like pinpricks to the skin which have the edgy quality of raising the hairs on the back of one's neck before launching into an onslaught of sound so thick Ranere's echoed vocals, at times, barely break through, while songs like "Now We Know" and "Have You Ever" cut to the chase with a driving, direct force. Another song, "If I Can," begins with a distant succession of wavering, schizoid vocals and several solitary guitar notes, followed by the chorus, before bursting into full drum, bass, and guitar ensemble, and songs such as the brief, slightly Tortoise-esque "II" satisfy the flute-laced, purely instrumental requisites that signify almost every Lake Trout album. "Honey" serves as the single, stripped-down acoustic tune, and Ranere's words seem to literally drip off his tongue as he croons and strums along.
In a nutshell, if Another One Lost could be characterized as a sonic film noir, Not Them You would be its avant-garde sequel. Experimentally dark, intense, and climactic, it picks up the pace from where its predecessor leaves off while dropping some of the ethereal, more delicate vocals that Another One Lost seems to carry. In fact, whether flatly wailing on songs like "Peel" or glumly grappling with defeat on others, such as "King," Ranere frequently sounds both defiant and disheartened, a feature which coincides with the album's apparent lyrical storyboard. But for what little it lacks in airy, strung-out vocals, it makes up for in grounded, densely layered drum `n' bass and heavy, hard rockin' guitar, which in light of their ever-evolving repertoire begs the question: exactly which genre does Lake Trout belong to? Ultimately, Not Them You is an epic "Riddle" that leaves one pondering.
top notch tunes.......2005-09-30
When I first discovered Lake Trout about five years ago and saw 'em every chance I could, I loved their "peaks and valleys" approach where songs would go from very atmospheric, almost shoegaze stylings, to super human drum and bass jazz workouts. These guys started out as a sort of "hybrid" group working in a more instrumental, dare I say jam band fashion. Fortunately they didn't become another Phish and instead went into an altogether different direction. When I was first seeing them I noticed fewer and fewer tie-dyed hippie types swirling around at shows, while a much more varied audience started paying attention. I think their storming rendition of the Cure's "A Forest" at the end of many of their shows made it clear they weren't another replecement band for lost Deadheads. These guys also drew in a lot of drum and bass heads because of their amazing drum and bass stylings at live shows. Fortunately they didn't pigeonhole themselves into that category either and instead managed to write some of the greatest songs known to rock today. However, Lake Trout aren't just any rock band. These guys expertly manage to create a soundworld where haunting horns and robotic rhythms merge with deep funk basslines, searing guitars, and bombastic drumming. In a sense, Lake Trout are a category unto themselves. It's due time for people to start listening up. Don't hesitate to pick up "Not Them You" if you like great, daring, quality music.
Evolution NOW.......2005-09-24
The studio albums do no justice to this band live, especially to the drummer, Mike Lowry. He uses 3 different snares during live performances. the variety of this playing is unparalleled. With that said, Not Them, You will leave you wanting more, that's for sure.

It's a bunch of violins doing Cure. And?.......2005-03-12
The selections are crap; possibly, the group wanted a mix of everything, but it's all mostly new, and mostly music that isn't even suited to the instruments. I shudder to think what would have happened if "The Cure" came out before this one. Terrible songs played even worse, most likely.
But, if you simply like instrumental music, it's not bad. It's just not necessarily The Cure.

Okay I'm not a fan of Cure covers, in fact I can't seem to think of one that I like, most of them make me mad that it was even attempted. I love strings and the fact that Roberts vocal lines arent attempted I thought this was going to be the missing link of Cure covers/tributes...
So when I first saw this album, my jaw dropped, I couldn't believe my eyes. Stared at it in awe for a minute, purely overjoyed, bought it and RAN to my car to listen to it. . . . Was interesting... Then I got it home, sat down and really listened to the entire thing, to be incredibly disappointed. It's not "BAD", it's a great idea, it was put together very good .. BUT .. The track selection is everything that is wrong with this. In my opinion, most of these songs were HORRIBLE choices. I don't think many of these work well with a string quartet. A few, yeah okay, aren't bad, but could have been much better with the proper tracks. They selected mostly the more upbeat pop singles, Just Like Heaven? Lovecats? C'mon...
This would have been INCREDIBLE if they did songs like Same Deep Water as You, All Cats are Grey, Kyoto Song, Sinking, If only Tonight we can Sleep, Faith, Apart... Things like that, slower songs. The upbeat pop songs, don't work for me with a quartet.
Great idea, wonderfully done, but terrible terrible track selection.
If I had heard this before I bought it, I wouldn't have, think about this before you purchase this.
I really thought this was going to be something special, like the Joy Division string Tribute which I HIGHLY recomend over this one, in fact go and get that right now if your looking for a string tribute.
At Last!.......2002-05-06
The songs on this album are imaginative versions of Cure songs, arranged for string quartet. Duh, right? Well, this project COULD have been drums and guitar with a violin playing Robert's vocal parts...considering this, I give "Whisper" high marks, even though I wish other less-known but more appropriate songs would have made the album ("A Few Hours After This," "To the Sky," "Treasure," etc). Bonus points for the covering of two newer tracks, "Bloodflowers" and "Maybe Someday." The version of "Just Like Heaven," The Cure's most covered song, joins the ranks of such great covers as Deadsy's and Dinosaur Jr's.
As I say, the arrangements are very close to the original songs, but don't adhere so closely that you think "why bother?" Vocal melodies are approximated - not duplicated - by the strings, which is what I prefer. The arrangement of "Hot Hot Hot" varies the furthest from the original, making a surprisingly wonderfully sombre piece out of the original chintsy tune. Pizzicato figures in nicely on a few tunes, as well.
The original tune "Zazen" sounds more like a Cure pastiche than a Cure-inspired tune; you'll probably be placing different parts of it with different songs. However, as nice as this tune is, I'd much rather have heard another full cover than this. (Granted, I'd rather the track be on it than have only 9 tracks on the album).
Overall, I'd recommend this album to huge Cure fans (who else would buy a tribute album anyway?). While not meeting my hugely high expectations (full orchestra, rare songs), this cd does a LOT better than what could have happened (listen to the "Pride" tribute to U2 to know what I mean). A good, solid album. Maybe this is naive, but I recommend buying this album rather than bootlegging, just so that the industry knows how welcome a project like this is (can we get any more, perhaps? : )
