5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-29

I remember my father listening to these songs way back in the late 70s. After hearing them over and over, I got to like them too. Whenever I hear them on the radio now, it always brings good memories. My favorites "Easy," "you bring me up" and "Sail On." These songs are classics. Excellent melodies and vocals.

5 out of 5 stars THE MILLENNIUM COLLESTION THE BEST OF THE COMMODORES.......2006-09-01

I WAS LOOKING FOR THE SONG OH NO AND I FINALY FOUND IT ON THIS CD. I CAN`T WAIT TO GET IT.THIS CD BRINGS ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS A KID.

4 out of 5 stars Lady, They Were Brought Up .......2006-03-06

There are just so many times when it comes to making a good hits package, they can be either good or bad, but the cases with the 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection has been either a considered hit or miss when it comes to showcasing a artist definitively. That has been the case with so many acts like Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart and classic Motown legends like Diana Ross and The Temptations. For The Commodores, the group hasn't been around in years, but there is always the possibility of finding a good hits package all theirs, following the R&B legends from Alabama.

The Commodores 20th Century Masters Millenuim Collection is a simple and convient reflection behind one of the most unique R&B groups of the 70's and 80's. The collection does a really good job at highlighting Lionel Richie and company. The songs here are arguably as simple and definitive as you could expect. The compilation includes some great party anthems like Brick House and Machine Gun, as well as classic ballads like their tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson on Nightshift, Sweet Love to even simple ballads like Three Times A Lady and Easy. While there are a lot of great tracks here, there are a couple of disadvantages to the record. One of them is that the album overhadows tracks like the Funk track Girl, I Think The World About You and Zoom. Not only that, but the tracks on the collection weren't remastered as well as well as other collections like the 1997 Ultimate Collection of The Commodores.

Despite a few flaws, The Commodores 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection is a very simple and straight forward reflection of one of the best 70's groups of all time. This is a very inexpensive, but mostly well-thought out reflection of Lionel Richie & Company. If you are on a budget and really want to get your groove on, I absolutely suggest this great album.

5 out of 5 stars More "Lionel Richie" than "Commodores" but..........2005-12-29

This 20th Century Masters is the best I've heard in the whole "20th century" series, but doesn't do too good a job at spanning the Commodores lifespan. Before Lionel Richie became a household name, The Commodores were mostly funk, as can be seen in "Brick House," the group's biggest hit, but beyond that song, the disc doesn't cover that side of the group very well at all.
But, I still give the compilation a perfect 5 star rating, because even though it covers a pretty narrow portion of the band, it covers the BEST portion. Lionel's ballads aren't nearly at the same level of genius as some of Marvin Gaye's or Stevie Wonder's greatest work, but I think they're just as enjoyable. Songs like "Sail On" and "Just To Be Close To You" will simply never get old.
I absolutely love this CD, it's one of the most played in my collection, but if you're looking for a true Commodores overview, you might want to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But The Hits.......2004-04-23

A Good Deal for 5.99 at Costco! Has every major hit of the commodores career!

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-05-16

I moved to Chicago in the late 70's from Connecticut and I was blessed to work for the Ohio Players Personal Manager. I was 21 yrs old and it was my first job in the music industry. When I hear their music it brings back the exciting life that I lived and it brings back wonderful personal memories for me

5 out of 5 stars True Funkmeisters.......2007-04-10

I was lucky enough to see these guys perform at a FREE outdoor concert in Lower Manhattan around 2002, and let me tell you, they were KICKIN' IT. The horn section was real tight, and the lead singer still has all the funk of his earlier years. It was truly a beautiful event!!!!!!!!

How can you NOT feel the funk of Roller Coaster or Skintight??!!

5 out of 5 stars Ohio Playas.......2006-03-07

These are my homeboys from Ohio and they know how to throw a party! They have several CD's but this one does it for me with the two slow tracks I want to be Free and Heaven must be like this. Sugarfoot made a CD on his own which I like but I can't find. Does anyone know where to get it has songs on it like I'm your Sugar etc...

4 out of 5 stars SERIOUSLY FUNKED UP!.......2005-05-21

This is one funked up album! I bought this cd, mainly for
Fire, and Love Rollercoaster. But Skin Tight, is really
great, and Sweet Sticky Thing is too! Almost every song
on here is good! If you have an ounce of soul in your
system, and you love funk, THIS IS A MUST HAVE!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Compilation.......2005-04-20

If you're an Ohio Players fan like I am, you'll probably enjoy this CD. My favorite song is "Let's Do It (Interpolated with "Let's Love"). Next to Earth, Wind & Fire, these guys are my second favorite band of all time.

3 out of 5 stars Nice singers, good for nostalgic Soul fans!.......2007-03-06

This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any CD collection.......2007-03-04

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Masters.......2007-01-24

I hear the music on radio
so I said i like this group
I wonder if the made more
then little hit's on the radio.

4 out of 5 stars Where's their first Album?.......2005-02-17

I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS.......2007-05-13

VERY PLEASED WITH MY PURCHASE,SWITCH AS A WHOLE WAS A GREAT GROUP WHO MADE REMARKABLE MUSIC THAT YOU COULD FEEL AND THE MANY TALENTS OF BOBBY DEBARGE, TRULY AMAZING. MY PERSONAL FAVORITE HANDS DOWN THE SPECIAL "THERE'LL" NEVER BE" THE FIRST SWITCH SINGLE RELEASED IN 1978...THE YEAR I WAS BORN. THIS TUNE HAS A CATCHY GROOVE THE HARMONIES ARE TOP NOTCH AND THE ARRANGEMENT IS EXCELLENT. OTHER HIGH NOTES ON THE ALBUM ARE "FRIEND IN THE SKY", "DON'T TAKE MY LOVE AWAY" IN WHICH YOU REALLY GET A FEEL OF THE VOCAL RANGE BOBBY DEBARGE POSSESED FROM THE START TO FINISH OVER A NICE STRING ARRANGEMENT "YOU AND I" IS A LOVE BALLAD THAT MAKES YOU THINK AND THE VOCALS ARE OUTSTANDING AS USUAL. "LOVE OVER AND OVER" IS A NICE EQUASION OF HEARING THE GROUP SING FOR US ALL IN HARMONY, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE FLAWLESS "I CALL YOUR NAME" IN WHICH IS SAMPLED IN OUR EARS THESE DAYS WHEN WE HEAR "THROW SOME D'S" BY RICH BOY. I ALWAYS WONDER DO THESE NEW ARTISTS FEEL THE MUSIC AND KNOW THE GREATNESS OF ONE IN WHICH THEY ARE SAMPLING OR PERHAPS THEY MAYBE NEVER HEARD OF THE INDIVIDUALS. THE BEST OF SWITCH IS AN ALBUM YOU CAN PUT IN AND IT'S SURE TO RELAX YOUR MIND PUT YOU IN A GROOVE AND DELIGHT YOU.WHEN YOU ARE A TRUE MUSIC LOVER LIKE MYSELF IT NEVER GETS OLD IT JUST ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE A CHANCE AND OBSERVE THE NEW BUT IN DUE TIME YOU TEND TO COME RIGHT BACK TO THE BEST, THE BEST THAT YOU FELT IN GENUINE EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC THAT WILL ALWAYS BE GREAT, AND THAT'S WHAT YOU GET IN THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION OF THE BEST OF SWITCH. THANKS GENTLEMAN FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF WORK.

5 out of 5 stars I Wanna Be Closer To This Collection.......2006-10-17

Switch were an excellent group despite never making a major impact their music still remain a staple for R&B lovers. Songs like "There'll Never Be" "I Call Your Name" & "I Wanna Be Closer" are timeless jams that still receive airplay to this day on the oldies stations. The album as awhole is a treat and it gives people who were fans of their major singles to become familiar with some of their lesser known songs. It's not a full length album but this compilation is the closer you can become since most of their albums are out of print. You can't deny when you hear one of their singles on radio it makes you feel just as good now then it did when it 1st came out. "I Call Your Name" is the cut.

4 out of 5 stars There Will Never Be Another SWITCH!!!.......2005-09-06

First of all I do like the compilation, I gave it 4 stars because its basically the same album as the 1991 release Best Of...Now i love all the songs on the best of series but how could you leave off others nuggets as "I Wanna Be With You" from the first album "SWITCH" and "Calling On All Girls","You're The one For Me" and "Falling" from SWITCH II The second release, The 3rd release "This Is My Dream" Featured gems such as the title track and "Why'D You Let Love Fall" and "All I Need Is You" this release featured sister Bunny DeBarge contributing three lovely written songs, The 4th release "Reaching For tomorrow' contained nuggets such as "I've Finally Found Someone New" and the beautifully written song "My Friend In The Sky" Very inspirational and Bobby DeBarge vocals here shine through and shows you that there will never be another like him PERIOD! The last release featured the nuggets "I Luv It" and "Push The Switch(HIGH ENERGY SWITCH)" this release also introduced two new members Terrance Gaines on Lead Vocals and Attala Zane Giles on Lead & Bass Guitars ......This release signaled the departure of Bobby DeBarge and Tommy DeBarge the year was 1981. Over all Switch had Five albums for motown. Switch was a well oiled unit and they JAMMED on the Up Tempo joints and as for the Slow Jams they brought the heat wit Bobby and Phillip ingram on vocals that was a nice combo, superb songwriting and musicianship "There'll Never BE" another switch and Bobby DeBarge man with a VOICE like ANGLES of course gone too soon man, What a falsetto......WOW! Now i have all 5 albums and they are in MINT CONDITION and i will be making my own best of serious........Keep Jamming SWITCH!!!!

Sorry to the hip/hop generation. Yall just don't know what real music is like. Yall can sample this music, you just don't know how to make it!! Strawberry Letter, I'll be good to you, and many more from this set is the stuff from real playing musicians, George and Louis Johnson, protege's of Quincy Jones. I lived this music in the 70's!!!

As a collector, there are 3 things that I consider most important when I'm looking for CDs: 1) Are all the top 10 songs present? 2) Are they the original recordings? 3) How much am I going to have to shell out for this CD? This CD passed the test with flying colors!

5 out of 5 stars Brojay's funk into the new "Millenium".......2000-10-10

Another title in the long list of Millenium Collection titles from Universal is this set from the Brothers Johnson. You might be asking why another greatest hits package from the Brothers Johnson? A couple of things that make this compilation enticing are two tracks that are finally making their debut on CD, including "Welcome To The Club" which was originally released on their long out-of-print original greatest hits album "Blast" back in 1982. Also the song that the George and Louis made their debut on, "Is It Love That We're Missin'" from Quincy Jones' "Mellow Madness" album(also unavailable on CD)is included. The hits included here are the full length album versions. The package has cool photos and has been nicely annotated by journalist Steven Ivory. The remastering(done by Universal's man on the west coast Erick Labson) sounds crisper and punchier than even the album reissues from '96. Though more for the casual fan than the hardcore fanatics, this is one of the stronger titles in the millenium collection series and is one I can definitely recommmend.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Best Richie Compilation.......2004-06-09

If your CD collection is weak on Lionel Richie and you are looking for a nice compilation of his hits, I would recommend "The Definitive Collection" over this "20th Century Masters" album. This CD only has 11 tracks. "The Definitive Collection" has 20, and it's still 1 CD. This album is inexcusably missing some of Lionel's most significant and important hits, including "Endless Love," "Stuck On You," "Sail On," "Penny Lover," and "Ballerina Girl." All of those songs are on "The Definitive Collection." There are some tracks from this CD that aren't on "The Definitive Collection," so I recommend you compare the track lists before choosing. But in the end, I think you will agree that this is (by far) the weaker of the two sets.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional value,excellent mastering........2004-06-05

Who wants to listen to 20 or more songs on a single disc, its boring and frankly i don't have the time. Therefore give me eleven of Lionel Richie Best songs and iam in heaven....this disc was created for people like me.I sold my other compilation

the many Greatest Hits packages thing is weak after a while but if you are new to Lionel Richie then this is a really good place to start. He is one of the Best Songwriters Ever to Me&doesn't get enough credit for turning out as many Classics as he has.I have quite a few of His Albums&have enjoyed His Concert Performances.I wish he would get back with the Commodores again but I also wish Michael Jackson would get back with his Brothers&Sly Stone with the Family Stone but to quote Lionel Richie on "Sail On":Wishful thinking.it don't look like any of that is gonna happen.but this is a Good start for the new Ear to Lionel Richie's Music.

3 out of 5 stars Oops, they did it again..........2003-10-10

When Paul McCartney puts out a hits album, he doesn't include Beatles tracks. Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel's best-of's don't even hint at their careers with Genesis.

So why isn't it possible to have a Lionel Richie collection without throwing in Commodores tracks?

There's a just-fine Commodores Millennium collection already out there. We don't need to drop several of Lionel's best solo hits to pad it with tracks that didn't fit on the first CD.

And since the tracklist is missing, here it is:
1. You Are
2. My Love
3. All Night Long (All Night)
4. Hello
5. Say You, Say Me
6. Dancing On The Ceiling
7. Deep River Woman
8. Cinderella
9. Zoom - Commodores
10. Lady (You Bring Me Up) - Commodores
11. Jesus Is Love - Commodores

Missing without excuse: Running with the Night, Stuck On You, Penny Lover, Ballerina Girl, and of course, Endless Love.

Spend the extra coupla bux & get the Definitive Collection, which, among solo Richie tracks, excludes only the Alabama-collaboration "Deep River Woman". If they'd dropped the 5 Commodore tracks on that CD, there'd be room for it too.

4 out of 5 stars The Jets Rule.......2007-02-04

This collection is awesome. I loved this group when they hit the scene back in the early to mid eighties. All the songs on this cd are classic Jet singing/dance songs.

4 out of 5 stars Good 80's R&B Pop Music.......2007-01-12

I never heard of them until I saw their video on VH1 classic a few years, they are not bad at all. Especially like Rocket 2U, Make It Real, Cross My Broken Hearts. Unfortunately they only have 3 albums for the entire music career, so this collection is short, all the songs are good though.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-24

This CD is outstanding. I LOVE every song. I play this CD at least once a week.

3 out of 5 stars miss the 80s?.......2006-08-11

If you miss the fun of 80s pop, this CD is good enough for you. A couple of the ballads really struck me with memories - "You Got It All" brought me back to watching its video, and "Make It Real" put me at my 8th grade dance. All the dance tracks are upbeat and fun and i had memories of some of them - hearing " crush on you" on the way to the beach. "Cross my broken heart" placed me at the pool in 1987. Fun and upbeat describes what the 80s were about. Maybe that's whats been missing from America for the past 16 years anyway.

4 out of 5 stars The gripping, infectious and electric sounds of The Jackson 5 !!!.......2007-01-24

The Jackson 5 burst onto the scene in 1969 with one of the strongest debut songs ever, "I Want You Back." The vocal and musical arrangements showcase the strength of the group and the rhythm of the melody just naturally makes you want to dance. Although Michael Jackson was a rather young boy to be featured so prominently, it never seemed to matter. In fact, his youthful, high-pitched voice makes the lyrics even more powerful in its own way.

The CD continues with three more smash hits for The Jackson 5: "ABC;" The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There." Again, the strength of the arrangements produces one cracker-jack hit after another. The fact that other artists perform covers of these songs to this day proves that these songs have a unique and powerful appeal.

"Never Can Say Goodbye" is beautifully delivered by Michael and the rest of the group; and the musical arrangement works very well to enhance the beauty of this ballad. Other great songs on this CD include "Got To Be There;" "I Wanna Be Where You Are" and "Dancing Machine." In addition, Jermaine Jackson does a great job on a cover of "Daddy's Home." Excellent!

The liner notes offer great color photos of the group as well as an informative essay by Brian Chin. The song credits are there, too.

Unfortunately, the CD clocks in at about 36 minutes even though there are eleven songs. That's 20th Century Masters for you--they simply never put enough music on the disc even when they have plenty of room for more. I will take off one star for that to make this a four star review.

The Jackson 5 remain one of the greatest groups of the 1970s. Their numerous rock and R&B hit songs display their infectious and positive energy. There's also a sense of urgency in the vocals that beckons you to listen carefully. You will enjoy each and every second of this song set as you dance in your living room to these hits.

This is a great CD for Jackson 5 fans or people who want to get more acquainted with The Jackson 5. I also recommend this CD for fans of that unmistakable Motown sound as well as R&B/Soul.

4 out of 5 stars This is great stuff..........2006-06-22

I'm not any sort of Jackson 5 fan, and this is their only album that I own. However, it is one of my favorites. Though it only contains 11 tracks, over half of those are absolutely fantastic, especially "I'll Be There" and "I Wanna Be Where You Are." Michael Jackson's young voice is nothing short of spectacular, and the songs are fun to sing along with the group. There are several clunkers, and it is strangely unsettling to hear a boy as young as Michael singing what are ultimately relatively intimate love songs. Nonetheless, this album is a blast, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars No superlative good enough for this found in my thesaurus.......2006-03-16

Below you will find a lengthy analysis of the opening song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.

This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.

The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.

(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding."
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?

Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.

One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.

I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.

Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?

4 out of 5 stars Worth a Re-listen.......2005-04-06

I wasn't that interested in the Jacksons during their heyday. In fact, it seemed like "kiddie rock" to me. And I guess it was in a way, but 30 years on, I'm wondering what's so bad about that. I had recently borrowed a Motown compilation from the library with the ballad "I'll Be There" included on it and was impressed with the overall production. Much of what had sounded a little blurred and tinny over my car radio back in the day sounded polished on my CD player. So I checked out this compilation as well to see if after three decades and multiple scandals, it didn't all deserve another listen.

And it does, by and large. By the 70s, Motown was putting out stuff that was pretty darn polished. There's also no denying that the prepubescent Michael Jackson was pretty darn precocious (apparently--before all that arrested development stuff seems to have set in). He can be a bit shrill here and there, but for the most part, he was already a real pro. Like many listeners who were already a bit older, however, some of that slickness and precociousness seemed a bit strange even then. It would get stranger.

But as music qua music, it holds up pretty well. The Jacksons were bubblegum, to be sure, but a better brand--and with better packaging, if you can forgive those 70s duds--than most.

5 out of 5 stars The Jackson 5 rocks... motown's greatest band ever!.......2004-07-04

Micheal. Tito. Jermaine. Jackie. Marlon. The boys of motown. Though this CD would be a little better if it had a few more songs on it it is still a great CD. I love most of the songs on here. There are only four songs on this cd that I don't listen to regularly... and seven out of eleven isn't bad. Micheal's voice on "Never Can Say Goodbye" is a little shrill but it is still a really, really cool song. This is the only Jackson 5 or Micheal Jackson CD I have...but I think I'm gonna have to get Micheal Jackson's #1's and the Jackson 5 Ultimate Collection pretty soon. If you are a die-hard fan of the Jackson 5 and you don't have the ultimate collection...go for it... but if your just a a reasonable fan of the J5... get this CD.

Parliament had long funk songs so this budget album is actually around 70 minutes long. However, Parliament Gold is 2CDs and less than twice the price so I suggest you go with it instead. Gold also has the 10 minute version of Flash Light (my favorite track) instead of the 5 minute version that's on this one.

If you really want to get a party started, you might as well have this CD. Funky classics such as Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker) and Flash Light are sure to fill that dance floor (or living room floor soon to become a dance floor.) And let's not forget some of the good songs that aren't as classic, such as Doctor Funkenstein, P-Funk and Aqua Boogie (a Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop). If you like funk, you need this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Kings of the Mid-Eighties House Party!!.......2007-03-06

If you were a rich kid in the mid-eighties, you wore Lacoste "alligator" shirts and listened to Prince. If you were a scrappy underdog from "the wrong side of the tracks" (like me), you wore a polo shirt from K-Mart (with a little slug on the front pocket) and listened to Ready For the World. I was their biggest fan -- and yes -- I was the only white guy in my junior high with a Jheri Curl. Some kids called it a "scary curl" -- but I didn't care. I wanted to be like Ready for the World, whose anthems and ballads touched the peeps so deeply. Y'all ready to feel it? To get freaky-nasty? Let's break it down:

1. Ceramic Girl (Extended Mix) -- A variation of the climactic big hits (below); Oh Sheila and Digital Display. When people get tired of those two, play Ceramic Girl.
2. Slide Over -- A slow jam that will win people over to love. You can feel the sincerity.
3. Oh Sheila -- Widely considered a plea to get Prince protege Sheila E into the Ready camp. Prince had Sheila E, Sheena Easton, Vanity, and Appolonia in his stable about that time. Ready for the World had a woman who once met Lisa Bonet at a Chuck E. Cheese party. Ready's courtship of Sheila E in order to get some "sex cred" (and some sex) was a gallant effort. I respect that. GREAT song.
4. Mary Goes 'Round (Single Version) -- Prince *wishes* he had thought up the title's single entendre.
5. Gently -- A *very* classy way to describe that sublime moment when you hear, "Go to second! Go to second!"
6. Digital Display (Radio Edit) -- The singer repeats "36, 24, 36, " and wants to "play with" a woman's "digital display." When you're in junior high, you wish all women would be busty robots! And this song nails that precious emotion.
7. Tonight -- If you you played this slow jam while you drove a babe to Safeway for a pink champale run, by the time you got back to the party she'd be all yours.
8. Long Time Coming (Single Version) -- The lyrics hint at innuendo. Actually, the lyrics just come out and say it - straight up!
9. Deep Inside Your Love -- I've studied this song like the Zapruder film, and I'm still not sure what it's about. Sounds good though.
10. My Girly (Single Version) -- Sounds a lot like Keith Sweat's "I Want Her" ("I wanna do it like this, do it like that"). But Ready for the World puts a clever twist on the song, so it has more of a "I wanna do it like THAT, do it like THIS" sound. Nice.
11. Straight Down To Business (Single Remix Version) -- A sly metaphor for doin' the do, sung in a way that makes Bobby Brown seem like Bryant Gumbel.
12. Can He Do It (Like This, Can He Do It Like That) (Extended Mix) -- Can anyone *really* do it like Ready for the World? I think not.
13. Whose Is It? (Chocolate Mix) -- Creamy, rich, tast-a, oooo yeeeah.
14. Love You Down -- May be responsible for the most slow dance hook-ups in the history of song. Also responsible for the most ruined blouses because of Jheri Curl juice smudges. (Especially on those 80's style blouses with shoulder pads!)

Let's face it: If a guy on a New York City street corner sold you a cd of Prince for pennies on the dollar, and it turned out to be Ready for the World, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. (Ready for the World are *not* the Sunshine Hydrox cookie to Prince's fancy Oreo, as the rich kids at my junior high used to say!) In fact, the next time Prince has a greatest hits album, at least three of the above songs should be on it. Seriously, I'd pay $15 just for "Oh Sheila" and "Digital Display," and their other songs are some of the best of an era... or anytime.

3 out of 5 stars ready for the world.......2006-08-05

the cd case was cracked and had some scratches on the cd itself but it played fine

5 out of 5 stars Now This Is A Compilation!.......2006-07-14

Universal's "MILLENNIUM COLLECTION" series are usually skimpy on the song selection and the time length. However, this Ready For The World compilation is a glowing exception. Clocking in at over 73 minutes, this 14-song set contains all the hits in either lengthy 12" versions ("Ceramic Girl"), full-length album versions ("Love You Down") or well-mixed radio edits ("Can He Love You Like This").

READY FOR THE WORLD's music is Prince-lite with the truly unique vocals of Melvin Riley, who represented whiny soulful singers four years before Keith Sweat stepped up to the plate. The band may have bitten off of someone else's style, but at least this talented act was able to add their own stamp to it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of RFTW Hits.......2005-06-29

This is a must have CD for anyone who enjoyed Ready for the World's 80s hits. As someone who owned RFTWs tapes (yes...back in the day when you bought either LPs or tapes!), I was very happy to come across this greatest hits collection. It really does have all the RFTW songs that you could possibly want.

5 out of 5 stars I love Ready for the World!! But there will always be haters.......2005-01-04

I have always been a fan of Ready for the World from the start. Every song was a hit for me. My favorite was "love you down, Whose is it, tonight and so many more." I just hate to hear haters like the review before me of Mike Patterson. There are several artist that may sound like someone else or have similar lyrics.....but in the music business it comes down to who gets the break and who doesn't. Well, I have never heard of Mike Patterson and probably never will. Ready for the World had their fame and they could be back you never know. JUST QUIT HATING.........Lay back and enjoy the music - cause you know its good.
