Editorial Reviews
Traditional Irish musicians commonly are fond of medleys of jigs and reels, but few have been so relentless in combining compatible melodies and rhythms as County Clare fiddler Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill. The centerpiece of this album, recorded at Seattle's Tractor Tavern, is a 27-minute semi-improvised suite incorporating fragments of 11 distinct tunes. American folk music fans with attention spans more attuned to Woody Guthrie than Philip Glass might prefer the more concise five-minute pairing of "Carraroe" and "Out on the Ocean," or the jazzy six-minute coupling of "Dowd's No. 9" and "Come West Along the Road." As the old advertising jingle goes, "It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long." --Rick Mitchell

Blown away.......2007-06-18
Amazing, wonderful, powerful..........2007-06-14
Here's a guy who is soft-spoken and humble before God, and truly grateful for his salvation, given his background, which you can learn about on the CD and online. His thirst and hunger for the Lord--a true, unaffected faith--comes through in every song. If his voice doesn't drive right through you--it certainly does for me--the music and lyrics will.
I am more fond of unadulterated acoustic music rather than polished studio mixes. This CD has it. Make no mistake though--the sound and music quality is excellent with two voices (Shawn and a female vocalist) and a cellist who adds just the right touching quality to the music.
It may sound strange but when I started listening to this CD it really starting deeply ministering to me. As a man I almost hate to admit it, but I had a hard time not crying on a lot of these songs. I started seeing how deeply and passionately someone not just wants but deep in our souls needs to know and love their Creator--it's simple and basic and fundamental to a Christian's walk, but we often miss it in the hum and buzz of our daily lives.
That said--all in all this is an excellent, warm, and beautiful effort from a superb musician I think we'll be hearing a lot from in the coming years.
Inspiring and Entertaining.......2007-05-28
The lyrics talk about needing God, surrendering to God, and praise. He is not afraid to mention the name of Jesus. His songs are both meaningful and catchy. I particularly like 'Gravity'. He also does a remake of Judy Garland's 'Over The Rainbow'.
Shawn is an up and coming artist who will both inspire and entertain. I recommend it.

Burnin' in Ballard.......2007-03-12
Ballard, a Seattle neighborhood that formerly boasted two regular jazz venues but now has none, is a traditionally Scandinavian enclave. That part of the world has always supported this music, so the venue is still appropriate. What transpires here is great individual playing and tight group interaction. Keezer has been one of the best young keyboardists for several years, and is heard here on electric instuments as well as his more familiar acoustic one. Mike Pope is solid and collabarative as always, and Terreon Gully is among the most interesting and innovative of what is an outanding cadre of younger jazz drummers.
Joe Locke shows why the vibraphone remains one of the most enjoyable instruments to hear in this setting. The instrument doesn't have many exponents, but along with the estimable Bobby Hutcherson and younger players like Steve Nelson and Stephon Harris, Joe Locke keeps the vibes available as a solo voice.
With the exception of James Taylor's "Native Son", all the compositions are either Keezer's or Locke's. The performance is well-paced, each composition played long enough to give the two composers plenty of time to explore, and the live recording by Reed Ruddy is excellent. If you're partial to jazz recorded live, as many of us are, this is an excellent performance by a small band generating big energy. Highly recommended.
"Live in Seattle" - what the reviewers say..........2006-11-05
"As can be the case on special occasions, this live recording is ripe with sonic excitement, spontaneity, and the ubiquitous impression that something extraordinary is happening right before one's ears.
That undoubtedly was the feeling of those who filled the Mars Hill Church on November 19, 2005 for the third annual Ballard Jazz Festival's headline concert. The wow factor, in full force at the start of the show, had morphed into an I-can't-friggin-believe-what-I'm hearing phenomenon by the end of the night, as a normally subdued Seattle jazz audience found itself hooting and hollering as if the Seahawks had won the Superbowl.
Six tracks of original compositions (plus James Taylor's "Native Son") are captured here--three by Locke and three by Keezer--creating an enjoyable yet intricate challenge to listeners who attempt to name the composer of each tune without peeking at the credits--so similar are the musical visions, so subtle the thematic differences that separate Locke's and Keezer's writing for this group. Harvey Siders (JazzTimes):
"[..] Co-leaders vibist Locke and pianist Keezer are so close in their musical philosophy that when one itches, the other scratches. They comp respectfully behind each other, not that either leaves many gaps. And each knows how to heighten the energy of the other. Regarding group excitement, the quartet is propelled by a kinetic rhythm section: bassist Mike Pope and drummer Terreon Gully. [..]"

Dr. Michael Matheny (RadioIO Jazz):
"Setting the pulse and vibrations is drummer Terreon Gully with Mike Pope locking firmly on to the foundation with both electric and acoustic bass. Just these two players are fun to follow through each track. But it is Geoffery Keezer who is (simply mad!) on piano and Locke himself that fill every space of the sound spectrum left in the mix. The music is intelligently horizontal and vertical. Once you think you are in the groove and the standard has been set, you are taken to a higher level as you follow the agile dialogue between Keezer and Locke. The results are magical."

Frightening.......2006-08-14

Wha'?.......2005-08-10
My God. I liked the Olatunji concert, but there are limits to even my liberal definition of "music". Cosmos is a nonsensical catfight. Afro-Blue begins nicely with a 4/4 version of the theme, but where does Trane go after the first fifty seconds? Pharoah Sanders takes over in a truly crude and pretentious display of quacks and farting noises.
I havent listened to Evolution, but I understand it is even harder on the ears than Cosmos.
The only thing I liked on this album was Body and Soul, in a wild version that would have given Coleman Hawkins peptic ulcers. I must admit I also liked Out of this World. Three stars out of five.

An Excellent Live CD from his website.......2004-02-03
There is an autheticity to Joe that is far removed from the smug calculated preciousness of MacManus. Joe never lost his punk vitriol, no matter how skilfully he embraced it in music. And he never had the delusional self absorption to dismiss and deride Ray Charles's contributions.
There is always an edge to Jackson, even in in the sentimental "Home Town", which strikes a resonating chord with anyone who sees something essentially lost in their place of remembered beauty. This set sparkles all the way through, and though taken from different concerts in different cities, it is a seamless and intimate presentation of some of his most terrific songs. There is everything to like about this set, so, if you hadn't picked it up before, do yourself a favour and do so now.

"Fun, Fluffy, Filling, and proFound" wrapped up in one........2004-02-23
I've had this album for a number of years, (after seeing them by chance at a music festival), and still get great enjoyment from listening to it.
"Welcome to the New World" is my favorite cut. A song unequalled in it's ability to paint a broken marriage and midlife crisis and ensuing opportunity with nothing more than a series of sub-phrases consisting of adjective/noun pairings and the title line.
Vocals are fantastic, great blending, flowing gracefully back and forth as a single voice or a perfect harmonization at will. No small feat when you realize how many syllables Andrew can cram into a measure.
Andrew's lyrics are second to none. I don't say that lightly. In fact, I think they are genius in their mock simplicity. Other great lyricists actually need to make sure that we understand how deep they are and how selective they've been. Andrew's lyrics aren't trying to impress anyone, He's not afraid to go from cutesy to ironic to triple entendre to a multi-layered analogy in a single stanza. His song subjects also run the gamut. You wouldn't find many folks putting out a child like song"Little Skipper" (yes, as in Barbie doll Skipper) on the same album with a forlorn song like "Comfort Me". Yet both are treated with the same lyrical care. There is no lyrical equal to Andrew (across all his albums). This is mainly because no-one else even attempts his lyrical style. Free-flowing and as fast as they come, (think Fed-ex commercial, or post-commercial legal disclaimers), yet they can hold up under a microscope of repeated listening. This is what makes the album have such a long shelf life. They can be taken as carefree, but weren't created that way. Depth is optional for the listener. `Doug Engaged' is a great example.
The rhythms, especially on the guitar are superb. Truly unique. Can't explain, just listen.
The only criticism I have of the album is it's mixing, especially on the initial track. The vocals which should be frontstage, especially on this cut, are too distant, and the acoustical accompaniment takes the focus.
I would recommend this to folks who like David Wilcox, Christine Lavin, or the old Bare Naked Ladies. I would compare it to Gordon (by BNL). Fanciful, not taking itself too seriously, but underneath the surface, the simplicity is a veneer for a much more skilled songwriting.
I sense a valid tinge of frustration from the group that they have not become more popular. Indeed, it's a shame, they're too deep for bubble gum music, and not taken seriously enough by the elite as worthy of being truly artistic. They're too fun for folk music, and not hip enough for pop rock. But for those who don't feel a need to justify themselves to the music critics, and want something that is textured enough to provide years of enjoyable listening across a range of subject, this is truly unique and great album.

Product Description
The name itself gives the first hint: not the American String Orchestra, or the American String Ensemble, but the American String PROJECT. Think "project" in its one of its prime connotations-- a plan in development, communal in nature, defining and refining its goals as its members engage and you get a sense of the fluidity and camaraderie that are the hallmarks of this group. The American String Project is an annual phenomenon where diverse performers and modes and visions mingle to create something that did not exist before: Fifteen string players from around the world gather in Seattle to perform works from the chamber music repertoire that have been arranged specifically for the group. The intimacy of the chamber music articulation, with its interplay of tone and color, is enriched and deepened, taking on the tonalities of a string symphony but always with the proportion and exchange that characterizes the great chamber works. Two further differences are salient: First, the Project draws from the world s premier string players: soloists, concertmasters, chamber music artists, teachers. Moreover, this ensemble performs without a conductor. The group is anchored by its artistic directors, Barry Lieberman and Maria Larionoff, but its modus operandi is collaborative. Each work on a season s program is assigned a "leader," who together with all the musicians determines how best to shape and present the performance. From work to work, the players positions rotate, to egalitarian effect: at times even a musician who sits exclusively in the concertmaster s chair in her or his regular job may occupy in the last chair in the second violins. The result of these differences, as audiences and critics over the past five seasons have discovered to their joy, is music making of thrilling vitality and communication-- performance not as reproduction but as translation. From the introspection of Mozart to the energy of Beethoven and the poignancy of Mendelssohn; from the pasPop Music:
