Album Description
"Faking The Books", Lali Puna's third album, is a maverick display of pop sensibilities applied to a world gone wrong. All the ingredients are there : The killer hooks, the subliminal fusion of generic undertones, Valerie Trebeljahr's alluring vocal delivery that at first soothes the senses and at second glance portrays the system in all its celluloid, deceptive glory. The band have already provoked glowing responses from the highest-profile listeners - adored by Radiohead, championed by Andrew Weatherhall, re-arranged by Bomb The Bass, backed by Radioactive Man, remixed by Two Lone Swordsmen and closely followed by an ever-expanding ripple of admiration from a now substantial body of fans. A band made up of members from projects as central to the guitar-pop scene as The Notwist, Tied and Tickled Trio, Console and more. And when you receive support at that level (reaching a peak with the release of their last album "Scary World Theory") - where do you go?
For Lali the progression came with confidence : the amplifiers turned up,the instruments plugged in, the voice placed higher up in the mix and the storytelling edged closer to our confused, lawless, modern version of the world. "Faking The Books" is all about the signs of our times, inverting the Zeitgeist into something that not only explores the musical fusion of raucous instrumentation and layered, soothing production, but that also tells its story with a multi-coloured grip on our peculiar reality. The songs direct themselves with a pop conviction that isn't afraid to mix vintage synths, vocal effects, garage drum workouts, detroit strums, carefully arranged strings, electronic bass drums and a homage to all the bands that have paved the way for such diversity - you know, the one's that have made the current crop of guitar-pop heroes role-models for a new generation.
Deceived by the system, the vapours of uncertainty hang over "Faking The Books". A world where nothing is quite as it seems, a world where no one can be trusted. The only certainty comes with connection, a connection to a band forging through stereotypes and inviting you to immerse yourself in songs that, once exposed to, will refuse to let go.

Starts strong, weak finish.......2007-01-31
A pleasant surprise.......2006-04-11
Although B-Movie is still a favorite I really dig Micronomics because I love the opening guitar riff. Call 1-800 Fear is pretty much my ultimate fave off the disc because I love the second half where it's nothing but electronic clicks and beats as the words "Someone is taking over," swirls through the mix. Brilliant track with a subtle yet powerful political message behind it.
I am an newly recruited fan! I can't wait to purchase Tridecoder, the remix CD and hopefully have an oppurtnity to see these guys live.
Amazing!.......2006-04-04
And now we try to forge ourselves..........2005-10-17
Lali puna seeems to be taking equal cues from the worlds of trip-hop, downtempo electronic, IDM, and the My Bloody Valentine school of rock to create something altogether unique and emotionally powerful.
These songs could be seen as bittersweet anthems to lonliness and perserverance, and there's a hidden beauty to practically every track. It's a deceptively optimistic record, and it manages to find a light and delicate side to whatever "genre" it is taking on. After a few listens, it becomes almost impossible to go without this album. It is adventurous albums like this one that defy simple genre classification and pave the way for the endless possibilities of future music to come.
If you're already a fan, I'd recommend picking up the remix/b-side double-disc "I Thought I Was Over That," which features some really great songs that didn't make the cut, as well as some amazing remixes which manage to work within the strangely atmospheric mood that Lali Puna has created. In particular, the Boom Bip mix is very good.
On a similar musical note, I would recommend The Notwist's "Neon Golden" album, which is also indespensible. You might also like M83's "Red Seas, Dead Cities, and Lost Ghosts," or the Themselves/Notwist collaboration under the name 13 & God. There's a similar (if poppier and more electronic) drive running through the sadly overlooked Duo 505 album "Late" as well, and it deserves to be given a listen.
It is music like this that is restoring my faith in things to come.
AWESOME!.......2005-03-13
Lucky those who discover Lali Puna.

It's funny how odds and sods collections by electronic artists often add up to their best releases, from Enon's Lost Marbles to Fennesz's Field Recordings compilation. I Thought I Was Over That: Rare, Remixed And B-Sides has the advantage of spanning multiple years, from Lali Puna's early electronic pop to their later, more guitar-oriented stuff. It also has many remixes commissioned by and for the band, deeply broadening the sonic palette. Formed with members of the Tied and Tickled Trio and the Notwist, Lali Puna is something of a minor supergroup. The music is melodic, mellow, and inventive stuff that blurs the line between pop and mildly out-there sounds with politically barbed lyrics sung breathily by Valerie Trebeljahr. As such, it's perfect for fans of Lamb, Stereolab, and Laika. A few songs are experiments that should have stayed in the studio; "Left-Handed Dub" is dreadful and the remixes by Flowchart and Two Lone Swordsmen are a bit dated--too `90s-sounding. But that's still only one tenth of the album, the rest of which is a pleasure. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
I LOVE THIS CD!!!!!!.......2007-05-22
CD 2 isn't THAT bad.......2006-02-26
buy it for disc one.......2005-08-29
On the other hand, Lali Puna themselves are excellent at inhabiting the space of others, whether by remixing (Two Lone Swordsmen's "It's not the worst I've looked", Dntel's "(This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan") or via remakes: Slowdive's "40 Days" and, best of all, the long forgotten (but not by me!) collaboration between Giorgio Moroder and Phil "Human League" Oakley, "Together in Electric Dreams." All these tracks are on Disc One, and here the Amazon reviewer is spot on: Disc One is just about the best Lali Puna album ever. Besides all these gems, there is the thunderous beauty of "Clear Cut", their brilliant collaboration with Bomb the Bass.
If you buy this CD for disc one, treating disc two as a kind of bonus disc, you can't go wrong.
Unmissable!.......2005-08-25

Album Description
For the last three years Valerie Trebeljahr has been quietly whittling away at her very own blueprint of pop music. Steering well clear of prevalent harmless geniality, her aim is to cleverly and intelligently dissect our perception of the world around us. After initial, tentative solo ventures on a four track and contributions to the Hausmusik Reihenhaus" 7" series as well as The Safe Side" on Belgian label K-raa-k, Lali Puna have now become a fully fledged band, carefully selecting band members (from Console, Notwist, Tied and Tickled Trio, Iso 68, Fred is Dead) as well as infrequent collaborators (Bomb the Bass, Two Lone Swordsmen). Following last years album debut "Tridecoder", their latest offering "Scary World Theory", again released by Morr Music, has now achieved the perfect combination of pop and (personal) politics. Behind ostensibly shy, almost withdrawn vocals Valerie is by no means coy about confronting the world's ambivalent status quo, bluntly documenting current conditions underneath putative fragility. And the music, too, demands our full attention. Between hummable chords and sometimes soothing, almost hypnotic monotony, each repetition discloses multi-layered complexity as well as cleverly hidden counterpoints. No matter if atmospheric (Satur-nine), exuding classical warmth (Contratempo, Lowdown) or quietly breathy (Scary World Theory) - again and again Lali Puna tear heartbreaking harmonies from the sparsest of arrangements. 50 Faces Of rewinds the beat to move our feet with funky House breaks, intersected by stubbornly chirping electronics. Nevertheless, Lali Puna's precision is best revealed on Nin-com-pop or Don't Think - here seemingly unemotional reduction coaxes its way into our ears with unflustered self-confidence and refuses to go away. Produced by Mario Thaler (a.o. Notwist, Slut) "Scary World Theory" is a confidently melancholic album quite happy with itself. And willing to spread that happiness. If we're prepared to let it enter our lives, that is.Customer Reviews:
Soothing, effervescent, ethereal, and basically happy music.......2004-08-05
Everything here falls easy on the ears. There's nothing harsh, no rough edges, just melody. Amazing how what sounds like simple laptop noodling can hold your attention throughout an entire album. There's not one song on this album I don't like.
I judge any album by its headphone value and longevity. If I can happily listen to this stuff in a pair of kickass headphones (noticing intricacies, hidden melodies and beats, and hearing the production quality), and do so for longer than just a few weeks, I find that I've got a keeper. Lali Puna is one of those bands.
Sometimes, when I'm feeling kind of down, I put on Lali Puna and my mood transforms. This music is, in a word, beautiful.
If you haven't heard any of their stuff, I suggest you treat yourself to some LP. In fact, go out and buy the damn CD, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
amazing album.......2007-03-02
The title track is particularly good, but the album works very well as a whole. It's pop-ish and catchy enough to be comfortable for most people to listen to, but it's eclectic enough for serious music snobs as well. When I played it at a dinner party earlier tonight, everyone wanted to know what they were listening to; it was very well received.
moments of heart aching beauty . . ........2007-01-23
Standout tracks are:
Middle Curse, a little ditty about quiting your day job with a lazy guitar melody and a lovely clicky break in the middle that plays on the sublime melody.
Bi Pet, which has slightly ambiguous yet very catchy lyrics. It's when the lyrics are repeated for the second round that song really hits a downtempo electro groove.
Come Home, which starts off sounding like someone accidentally dropped the needle on a record right in the middle of a warped piano melody. The break in the middle with the hiccuping vocals gives me goosebumps.
This is an amazing disc. I haven't stop listening to it since I bought it. A must have.
Unique sound, better than "Tridecoder".......2003-06-25
I bought Lali Puna's first release, "Tridecoder", when I originally discovered the band. I like this album a lot better. The overall sound is cleaner and pleasant to listen to. A few of the tracks, including "Bi-Pet", "Scary World Theory", and "Don't Think" are actually quite catchy and are stuck my head.
If you are trying to decide whether to buy "Tridecoder" or "Scary World Theory" I suggest ordering this album. It is only available as 1-2 week import, but it is much better and worth the wait!
Just fantastic.......2002-11-25

all the tracks are great. #3 bi-pet is just amazing.
i also highly recommend venus hum's debut album. kind of bjork-like but with no jazz!!

Album Description
This is the follow up single to Lali Puna's third album Faking The Books" which has been released to worldwide critical acclaim in april 2004.John Soda, The Notwist and Console.Additionally, Lali Puna asked two of their favorite artists for remixes. Anticon artist and Lali Puna's european tour support Alias did an amazing job on Alienation" (original version available on Faking The Books"). Micronomic" itself has been remixed by Boom Bip who has just released his remix collection Corymb" on Lex Records featuring a remix Lali Puna did for him. What goes around, comes around!
To round things off, Micronomic" includes two brandnew Lali Puna songs which have been written and recorded while the band worked on Faking The Books". The Daily Match" clearly focusses on Lali Puna's pop skills and is one of their most accessible songs to date. Harrison Reverse" is one of the band's rare instrumental compositions presenting Lali Puna's more electronic and abstract side.
