It's rare to find an audio album that utilizes a dancer to great effect, but there is occasionally a flamenco effort that captures the rhythms and excitement of the art form. Son De La Frontera is such an effort. A tribute to the groundbreaking guitarist Diego del Gastor (1908-1973), the album features his songs performed by a top-flight quintet. Dancer Pepe Torres is a true artist here, not only tapping out complicated time signatures but also eliciting a broad array of sonic textures from his feet. Along with two percussionists (one which occasionally sings), the group also features precise but fiery playing by Raul Rodriguez on Cuban tres guitar and Paco de Amparo on traditional flamenco guitar, giving the songs a broader steel-and-nylon-stringed palette that is both Old World and New. With no gratuitous use of electronics, the real innovation here is the exceptional abilities of the players and their broad faith in these great flamenco songs to create breathlessly exciting music. ­--Tad Hendrickson

Son de la Frontera's debut CD is an exquisite blend of emotionally-charged, heart-stirring flamenco music, mostly drawn from Diego Del Gastor's rich legacy in Moron de la Frontera. Mixed in with the beautiful, stirring sounds of the Cuban trés played by Raúl Rodríguez; the haunting voice of Moises de Moron; and the compás of the rhythm section; their debut is an impressive work.

While others would rave on about "Como el agua entre las piedras" and the centerpiece "Cambian los tiempos", my favorite track on this CD is number three, "Bulería del corazón". It is truly a beautiful track with so much potential. Ironically, it is one of their more original works. The chord progressions are beautifully crafted like an artisan building a Spanish guitar, carefully crafting the body and winding its strings. It is truly a song that enters the heart.

Other tracks include its resounding beginning, "Bulería Negra del Gastor", the main homage piece to their master, Diego Del Gastor. Other tracks are equally phenomenal.

By the way, I saw Son de la Frontera two years ago playing at a concert at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami, before heading to Madrid, Spain with my school!

When I first heard this cd...few years back , I could not belive my hear . Who is that ? A tres plyed like a flamenco guitar , what a great sound ! I cant recommend enough this group , and I play this cd almost weekly since I bought it .

Music is about intense emotion , this cd is one of them .

Beautiful, hypnotic, Arabic-tinged Andalucian music. More naturally flowing than some of the new Hispano-Arab music. Relaxing but not new-agey or medieval.

This record by Paco del Gastor does not require the acquired taste that so much flamenco music demands: anyone can listen to it without either having to cringe (if not a flamenco aficionado) or wince (if a lover of cante jondo or the "deep song" that is flamenco). The opening piece ("Morón, a part of myself") is breathtaking: guitar, electric bass, and cajón (a percussive box), were played and recorded inside a church, and it contains some of the most bewitching rhythms imaginable. It is a long piece, lasting over 13 minutes, and divided into three movements. It was composed by Paco out of the raw gypsy material in which he has been inmersed all his life and which is now part of him. Yes, he honors his uncle Diego's style of falsettos and rifts, but the piece is so personal and lyrical, that many of the people in the audience (churchgoers, workers, drifters) were crying by the time it was over: it has that kind of immediacy and beauty.

Because Paco has been for many years considered the finest flamenco accompanist in all of Spain, when he is left to his own devices as a soloist, he is modest and demure in his virtuosity (which is incredible). He plays not to prove how fast and accurately his fingers can fly over the strings, but to show how deeply wonderful the music that he plays is. He places himself not in front, but behind the music, so that nothing comes between the music and the listener.

For those aprehensive about such things, there are no voice songs in the CD: only guitar and the accompaniment mentioned in the first piece. The other pieces in the record are standard structural forms of cante jondo: taranto, alegría, siguiriya (ah, so beautiful, this one), bulería, soleá, and granaina. The playing time is a little over 57 minutes and the audio quality is excellent.

This CD is a tribute to Diego Del Gastor,one of flamencos' finest guitarists& human beings. Paco Del Gastor is a nephew of Diegos'& was also Diegos' favorite student who learned most of Diegos' repetoire & then took it all to the next level.This music is rich in melodic beauty & full of traditional flamencos' majesty! One of my favorite gypsy flamenco guitar recordings!

Top notch flamenco.......1999-08-22

I've found it extremely hard to find a good recording of traditional flamenco, but to find this album makes the search worthwhile. Paco is an expert guitar player. His melodies range from soft and simple, to fiery and intense. I have to debate whether or not to play this guy on the radio next year, because if I do, nothing else I play will sound as good. I'm looking foreward to any more albums that Paco comes out with, and I hope they come soon. Anyone who loves flamenco guitar must have this album!

I find myself listening to it for a few days, taking it out of rotation but then coming back to it. Very good, very listenable, great musicianship and production. Sounds great in the car or at home. If you are in doubt, buy it. You'll be happy you did.

I was searching for tango music & came across Eco...as it's listed under the same genre. Hadn't heard of Jorge Drexler except for his Motorcycle Diaries contribution. I enjoy his voice, especially while driving--has a very calming effect on me.

This is pure poetry with music from a mixture of countries in Latin America. He is a genius. I highly recommend this album. I also love Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes with some similarities to Drexler's sound.
So soothing, it will become an album I will never get tired of.

interesting but not his best !.......2005-03-19

I have been a fan of Jorge Drexler for awhile , ( thank's to a Los angeles DJ ! )and since then had bough a lot of his music.....I must say that I'm not to impressed with his latest cd. I always loved the symplicity of his music , just a guitar and few other instruments, mostly acoustic , very jazzy , like the great cd " Vaiven " or " LLueve " ,I always compared his work to some early Michael Franks work . But not on this latest one , definetly over produced , and poorly aranged , with a difinit pop direction . Don't get me wrong his voice his fabulous , and his song writing is the finest.....but just spoiled here with too much electronic arrangement !

Jorge Drexler's music is very original, soothing, poetic and is worth buying even if you only speak English. Every cd he's put out is amazing!
