5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars SUSAN HAYWARD BELTS IT OUT.......2005-03-31

This CD is a rare treat for Susan Hayward fans - a chance to hear her do her own singing in the film "I'll Cry Tomorrow" based on the story of Lillian Roth, who battled alcoholism in her life. The sound quality is EXCELLENT and the CD includes extensive notes, and even includes unused tracks, such as the vocal efforts of studio vocalist Sandy Ellis, who was originally going to dub for Hayward. Many people are not aware that the real Lillian Roth was disapointed that her own voice tracks were not used for the film. But, Hayward surprised everyone with her surprisingly goodvocal range. The background music is exceptionally fineas well, and is all included here. This CD is a must-have for Susan Hayward fans - and lovers of fine film score music as well.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15

no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural didn't spend the evening of Thanksgiving 2000 in a turkey-laden stupor. Instead, the longtime leader of Buckwheat Zydeco led his band through this typically high-energy set, recorded in his birthplace of Lafayette, Louisiana. The mode here is extended cuts--the shortest one clocks in at five and a half minutes--that allow the band to shuffle as long as there are dancers on the floor. While the amped-up bottom that Dural helped bring to zydeco is here--as is an R&B horn section that makes a cover of King Curtis's "Soul Serenade" sound like the product of a bayou-bred Van Morrison--Down Home Live! concentrates mostly on originals that bring plenty of Cajun flavor. (One of two other remakes, Fats Domino's "Walkin' to New Orleans," replaces the master's piano with Dural's accordion and the rubboard of son Sir Reginald Master Dural.) This could've been one of those in-concert discs that screams "You had to be there," but the sound and feeling are so vivid that you might end up feeling like you were. --Rickey Wright

Album Description

Live from Louisiana's Creole Country comes Buckwheat Zydeco's "Down Home Live!," the first-ever live album of zydeco's best-loved ambassador, Buckwheat Zydeco. "Down Home Live!," is a record of rollicking good times tracked in the intimate confines of El Sid O's Zydeco & Blues Club during a hometown break for the barnstorming bandleader's annual Thanksgiving show in Lafayette, La.

Blues Access, in a cover story and lead review, said: "The good-natured energy that literally pops off of this disc immediately makes you wish you had been at El Sid O's to witness the show in person. But you'll be glad to have this document of the event that catches not only every feel-good note but the essential `vibe' of the evening as well ... it's impossible to resist being caught up in the sheer sense of fun and release (it) draws you into."

From the powerhouse dance floor boogie of "What You Gonna Do?" to the majestic soul of Dural's brilliant reading of "Beast of Burden," the band does it all. The group even revisits their inventive reworking of Fats Domino's "Walking to New Orleans" and Dural's reggae-tinged zyde-soul anthem "Make A Change."

The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and others have called Buckwheat Zydeco "one of the best party bands in America," and now music fans need venture no farther than their CD players to find out what all the fuss is about.

" Down Home Live!" showcases the show-stopping dynamics that've turned countless curious listeners and concert-goers into full-fledged zydeco fanatics. This is also the disc the converted have been waiting for, as it captures Buck's irresistible personality, bottling the between-song patter, soaring solos and horn-driven workouts that are this legendary live act's trademarks.

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Zydeco!.......2001-09-29

One of my favorite Zydeco cd's of all time! Pure party music with some serious accordian playing, tight band, high energy and soulful singing that reach down deep into your soul! Saw him at The Jammin' for Salmon festival in Portland, Oregon on August 6, 2001 and he was the only artist at the festival who got the crowd into a dancing frenzy and put smiles on everyone! I had the opportunity to meet him and take a photo with him (a very nice man!), I have that photo online on my webpage. Play him often on The Crazy Coyote Blues and Jazz Power Show 1490 KOTY in southcentral Wa. state.

5 out of 5 stars The Cajun Creole James Brown Tears up The Bayou ! ! !.......2001-06-03

Stanley Buckwheat Dural Jrs tight house rockin' mix of Zydeco, Memphis Soul and Blues has always got me going. This time he done gone overboard - - especially when the horns are wailin' on the JB'ish "Put It In The Pocket" - - You might not associate the sounds of washboards and accordians in your funk, but when you hear him SCREAMING out on that sinfully juiced up Hammond B-3 (how the heck did they get that organ soundin' like that !), you know what's going on. This is probably one of the funkiest and most albums I've heard in over 10 years... from his Exciting Intro, straight through... this is a band with lot's of bottom, lot's of rhythm, lot's of soul... Buckwheat seems particularly energized off the festival circuit and back home at El Sido's, which for Zydeco *is* down home. Albert Collins may have left the building, and JB might be as young as he used to be but when it comes to screaming gutbucket funk and soul, Buckwheat not only lives, but is the reigning king. This album will make a change in your life !

A top pick of the millenium !

5 out of 5 stars Oh Lordy, Oh Lordy, let's start the PARTY!!!.......2001-05-22

This live CD is the next best thing to being there! No band is more consistently entertaining live than Buckwheat and his Ils Sont Partis Band. I first saw Buckwheat in concert Houston in 1987, and the energy back then at his live show is just as great as it is from El Sido's last Thanksgiving. Mike Melchione's guitar solos on "Beast of Burden" rival solos by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins. That smile on Buckwheat's face on the cover is contagious and shows he's having as much fun as everyone in the room, despite having a 35 pound accordion strapped to his back about 200 nights a year. This is one of the funnest live CDs I've ever listened to, especially at the ear ringing levels of my car stereo. I only wish it were a double live CD to hear more of his fabulous music.

4 out of 5 stars Buckwheat Live at Home!.......2001-05-09

This live zydeco set done on 11/23/2000 at the famous El Sid O's in Lafayette, LA by one of the genre's best Creole musicians with what has been dubbed one of the "best party bands in America". Stanley Joseph "Buckwheat Zydeco" Dural, Jr. has always been known for an eclectic, non-traditional vibe that incorporates blues, soul, & rock into the zydeco groove. At a time when most accordionists don't bother with the bass side of their accordions, he works the left hand buttons to create a musical depth & power other bands can't approach. In this collection, tracks like King Curtis' "Soul Serenade", Fats Domino's "Walking To New Orleans" & the Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden" are ideal examples of his penchant for laying a zydeco spin on pop tunes, with some soul "Make A Change" & a burner such as "Hard To Stop". This is high-energy material from one of the great good-time bands, & like the man himself, it's hard not to like.

5 out of 5 stars If you close your eyes, you would swear you're there!.......2001-04-27

I've seen Buckwheat perform live at the NJ Crawfish Festival a number of times. His energy, crowd interaction, and old-fashioned Louisiana entertainment style make his live performances wonderfully refreshing and down-to-earth. This CD captures all these great attributes. From his comments to the crowd ("Somebody Scream!" and "A Tois", for example), to the traditional way his band starts most of the tracks, you really feel the down-home, Lafayette, LA warmth. The jams on all songs are great, and would be excellent background music for any upbeat party. The recording quality is crystal-clear. My only complaint would be that the horn section, in some of cuts, is not always as highlighted as in some studio versions of the same songs. The liner notes help complete the listener's journey to Buckewheat's home, and El Sid O's club, the venue for the recordings.

A friend of mine just took me to see Disappear Fear at Down Home, and they knocked my socks off! Not only are these ladies talented beyond my wildest expectations, they are as personable a pair as I've ever come across. The "Live At The Down Home" CD is now in my car stereo, and I expect it to stay there for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the roots.......2001-10-30

I am listening to this album right now and it is calling me back to what I LOVE about Sonia. This album really gets back to her strongest songs in her strongest performance and really what it boils down to for me, the album is just *crackling* with her terrific positive energy. Perfect way to perk up your day.

5 out of 5 stars SONiA at her best.......2001-08-31

After the disappointment of her last album (the weak ME TOO, only interesting in spurts unless you really care what Harvey said in Amsterdam), I didn't know what to expect from this one, and wondered if another live album wasn't a step backward for Sonia.

Well, guess what? This is her greatest album.

I want to buy a box full of 'em and pass 'em out to everybody I know and strangers on the street. Sonia is one of the greatest talents I've ever heard, the living embodiment of Buddy Holly, Phil Ochs, and John Lennon, and she's at her peak in this acoustic live set. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but yes, she's that good. If you want to check it out for yourself, get this album. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Ballads and Proud Rock N Roll.......2001-08-22

As a long-time fan of disappear fear (the band) and SONiA (gone solo) I was tremendously pleased with this intimate, energetic album. When I turn up the volume, I can feel goosebumps forming as I recall the first time I happened upon this artist and was immediately enthralled by her sweet ballads, clever lyrics, emotional delivery, skilled guitar work, and proud rock'n'roll energy.

Listening to 'Live' I am trnsported from my tiny little NYC apartment, to the boozy, rowdy 'Down Home' in Tennessee where this was recorded: I can almost feel the intense energy SONiA brings to the stage. And with no one listening over my shoulder, I can even sing along as the breathless long notes of 'Be the One,' 'Me too,' and 'Fix my Life' touch my soul. Heavy on old favorites; but with excellent production, audience harmonies and accompanying African drums on a few, select, tracks, this solo effort seems to bring to them new life. Overall, this album showcases SONiA at her best: LIVE!
