Product Description

Radio Sweethearts is the second solo album from Sheila Noonan. The daughter of Irish American bandleader Paddy Noonan, Sheila has appeared on concert stages and package tours all across America. She has one solo album, 1996's "I Just Want To Dance With You" already behind her and Radio Sweethearts charts her progress in the meantime. It is a colossal advance on its predecessor as it sees her finding her feet and arriving at a musical direction befitting her talents. Ms. Noonan's voice is clear, strong and possesses a powerful sense of purpose. She avoids the soft option of either playing the established Irish American cabaret slant or repeating the process already set in stone by Mary Black, Maura O'Connell and Frances Black. Sheila steers a course across a wide selection of Irish, Canadian and Scoffish sources, finding songs that are eminently comfortable and which cry out for exposure. She has judiciously chosen her material from the pages of Tommy Sands, Dougie MacLean and J.P. Cormier. What emanates from her performance on Radio Sweethearts is a genuine sense of enjoyment and youthful vitality. "The Island" and "Roseville Fair" bounce along sweetly and "The Music Of Healing" packs a deeply felt emotional punch beneath her honey sweet vocals, with subtle backings bathed in an acoustic folk/country/rock crossover colour adding extra flair and panache. This sounds like an album Sheila and her compadres had fun making and its youthful drive is sweetly contagious. Radio Sweethearts finds Sheila Noonan's talent fulfilling its initial promise in a mature and accomplished fashion.

3 out of 5 stars Irish music or country music.......2007-02-23

Those who loves pure and more traditional Irish music may find too much country music overtone.

5 out of 5 stars IrishMusicLover.......2006-10-05

Radio Sweethearts is a sweet, uplifting mix of familiar cuts like Everybody Loves a Lover, and The Heart. Happy sounds like Roseville Fair and the sentimental Dougie MacLean song Singing Land, as well as Another Morning, song of an aging woman reviewing her life, or Emigrant Eyes, of a grand child's admiration for her Irish grandfather. The more I listened to this CD the greater appreciation I had for Sheila Noonan's lovely voice and choice of songs. But afterall, as Paddy Noonan's daughter, how could she NOT put out a good recording! They're Brilliant!!!

    Album Description

A wonderfully homespun album which highlights the skills of the band, from the graceful, looping pedal steel to the deft, economical drumming. What stands out most of all, though are the warm, husky, surprisingly "American" vocals along with the matching strength of the songwriting. John Miller's originals such as the title track, "New Memories" and the weepy "Fallen Out Of Love Again" show a strong and sensitive understanding of country roots. Francis Macdonald's upbeat contributions, particularly the clever commentary on the genre, "Every Other Song" ("...every other song I hear/'s about drinkin' too much beer...") and the doleful "Lonely Footsteps" bring an indiepop sensibility into the mix, but with admirable subtlety. And of the handful of cover tunes, the best is a sweet take on the Freddy Fender classic, "Is Anybody Going To San Antone?" Shellshock. 2005.

    5 out of 5 stars Scotland's finest honkytonk band!.......2001-12-09

These guys are GREAT... This is a wonderfully homespun album which highlights the skills of the band, from the graceful, looping pedal steel to the deft, economical drumming. What stands out most of all, though are the warm, husky, surprisingly "American" vocals along with the matching strength of the songwriting. Singer John Miller's originals such as the title track, "New Memories" and the weepy "Fallen Out Of Love Again" show a strong and sensitive understanding of country roots. Indie-pop sweetheart Francis Macdonald (drummer for Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, and a slew of other power-pop projects) contributes steady, upbeat rhythm, as well as a few truly fab songs, particularly the clever commentary on the genre, "Every Other Song" ("...every other song I hear/'s about drinkin' too much beer...") and the doleful "Lonely Footsteps." He brings an indiepop sensibility into the mix, but with admirable subtlety. And of the handful of cover tunes, the best is a sweet take on the Freddy Fender classic, "Is Anybody Going To San Antone?" As an album, "New Memories" has rough-hewn edges, but in a very good, very un-Nashville way. Recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......1999-09-12

I saw Radio Sweethearts perform as support group for Heather Myles when she performed in Glasgow and I was impressed. Support groups rarely make the impression this group did. I don't usually find British acts singing country to quite work, but this act is an exception. Love the album, and I don't think there's a bad track on it.

5 out of 5 stars Scotland's greatest hard country heroes!.......2001-12-09

Glasgow, Scotland's finest alt.country band is back, with a slightly less raucous -- but no less rockin' -- set of harmony-rich honkytonk gems. Unlike their first album, "New Memories," this record is all original material, and most of it's written by Glasgow's singing brakeman, John Miller. Miller's voice continues to amaze with its flawless, soulful American accent -- and as a songwriter, he ain't no slouch, either. The band's original lineup is intact here, along with special contributions by Alex Chilton (harmony vocals on about half the album) as well as "Little" Stevie Jackson, of the band Belle and Sebastian. Another great independent record, well worth checking out!
