Tchaikovsky and Tchai.......2006-07-17
I wondered what do Tchaikovsky and Tea have in common, and then I remembered that in many countries across the world - the word for tea is "tchai". That aside, yes, this is a refreshing blend of music, perfect for tea time - relaxing and reviving at the same time, and quite a bit dreamy.
Teatime...or otherwise........2005-11-02
I've owned this for years & play it often. It IS perfect for teatime, as it makes pleasant background music which you can talk over....but is also great w/volume up in car w/it's rambunctious side and incredible instrumentation. A really nice blend of Tchaikovsky's pieces.
Tchaikovsky's Dreamier Music: A Soothing Album.......2005-07-31
"Set your Life to Classical Music" is a fine album series that feature beautiful classical music for background music of any occasion- weddings, barbecues, breakfast, beauty sleep, bathtime, reading a book, romantic dinner, massages you name it. And indeed many classical pieces are perfectly therapeutic sessions in themselves. This album features the more intimate-sounding, soulful, sweet and relaxing tunes of Tchaikovsky. He did compose heavier and more dramatically intense music- his later symphonies, his Overtures and operas. But here we hear no Russian fire or harshness. Instead we are treated to the charming Mozartian style works of the Roccoco Variations and the Piano Trios. The disc also features the Andantino from his Piano Concerto No. 1 - and that piece is almost a Chopin Nocturne, with beautiful soft rubato and dream-like qualities. Included here is also the Pas De Deux and Odette and Siegfried theme from his ballet Swan Lake, lilting and graceful as the dancers movements themselves. The dance divertissements from Nutcracker round out the ballet segments with charming allure. The melancholy String Quartet and Serenade For Strings is here as well and not to mention the beautiful, wistful excerpts from the ballet Sleeping Beauty, his greatest ballet. The Panorama and Vision of Aurora played with delicate strings and sublime technicality. This is indeed a "refreshing blend for body and spirit" and is in fact perfect to listen to while drinking tea cosnidering you drink tea. I have tried it and believe me the experience is very soothing and refreshing. Try putting this on in your miniature CD player with headphones, then go out into an outdoor, natural environment, a park or a backyard garden or patio, and drink tea or read a book and you will find this is a fine companion.
Beautiful.......2003-08-25
One of the best aspects of Tchiakovsky's music is the ocnsistency: he just DIDN'T compose any bad pieces. And with such consistency, you can compile a CD such as this.
THis CD gives you a proper taste of Tchaikovsky's style, and is a very nice sampler of some of his most famous works. This CD lacks some of his more energetically volatile works, but it thus lives up to its title. It is extremely relaxing, and soothes you as you listen to it. The works are melodic, and the orchestras and soloists are superb, especially in the Serenade and the Rococco Variations. I highly recommend this CD for anyone, even if you aren't a huge classical music fan.
Tchaikovsky's Most Enchanting Tunes.......2000-08-19
Like the title suggest, a good companion for tea time. Or any time. The music of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky is beautiful, lyrical and full of a grace and charm that parallels to Mozart's. A great collection of music by the legendary Russian composer. He had a gift for making music in a style that did not sway away from Russian folk music but that added a Classical perfection, or better yet a Romantic mastership. Who can forget the Sleeping Beauty suite. Here is the Panorama scene.. gorgeous music. I recommend the entire ballet score. The Nutcraker and Swan Lake are also here. The Piano concerto no. 1 in B, Andante Cantibile and so much more. I garauntee any listener satisfaction.

Best of the best.......2004-03-14
There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

Stay Away.......2006-01-05
While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!
Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23
The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.
Pipes and Drums: Amazing Grace.......2000-06-11
I love the sound of the pipes for this one song, and is my favorite.

Trailer Park Musical a good hear........2007-05-15
This musical is a good laugh and can bring up the spirits of any musical theatre buff. The voices are excellent and they showcase a great characterization of the personages represented in the show. It is a CD that entices the listener to go ahead and get tickets to the show and go see it. Also a personal acquaintance of mine Leslie Kritzer does a phenomenal job on the CD.
A Tornado of Fun!.......2007-04-10
This seems to be my year for finding recordings of lesser known musicals that are just awesome. It started with buying Zombie Prom, and continues with The Great American Trailer Park Musical!
But this show is just all-out fun! The tunes are catchy (I got one of them running through my head, right now) and the lyrics are quite clever. The three main ladies become the Greek chorus, telling us about life in their trailer park, Armadillo Acres, located in Starke, Florida. The show then focuses on one agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left her trailer in 20 years, and her husband who has had enough and starts fooling around with a stripper who is on the run from her boyfriend. Sound crazy? It is! And a whole lotta fun!
Yes, there are some explicit lyrics, but nothing excessive. So do yourself a favor and give this album a listen. You might just want to move into your own "manufactured home" before you know it.
One Of My Favorite New Musicals In Years.......2007-01-31
When I tell people about this show, I tell them it is far better than it had to be... With a title like that, the audience draw is already built in, but with great songs and a very clever story (without ever being offensive or degrading) this musical is a fun hit. And while it is not the old-school "Okalhoma" style musical, there are a lot of musical niceties about the show - layered melody lines, tight harmonies and clever clever phrases and lyrics. I fully recommend it.
The show (and Recording) ROCKS.......2006-09-26
The whole point of theatre, even in a tongue-in-cheek satire like this one, is to have some sense of truth. The "Great American Trailer Park Musical" completely hits the target dead-on. With it's ridiculous pop culture references, use of white trash musical pastiche (honky tonk country, corporate rock, wedding disco, and the like), and general use of bad taste in a visual (and audio) aesthetic, the show is one loaded joke that never tires. And the over the top performances, all grounded in this evident truth, provide an evening of Laugh after Laugh - more so than similar pieces like "Urinetown" and "Altar Boys".
Sure the language, for those who have expressed concern in above reviews, can be strong at times. But never is the language used in a matter of fact fashion. For those who have ever even remotely hung around a trailer park (as it quite Clearly states in the TITLE) or even around those who inhabit a Sociologists Jackpot of research, You know that crude humor and strong language are staple of the norm.
"Oklahoma" and "Cats" this show is not. However, "Great American Trailer Park Musical" is a definite piece to listen and pay attention to. With the general climate of new musicals to be either repackaged musicals from movies (Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Footloose, etc) or jukebox musicals (Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Hot Feet, etc) - there is a new genre that is emerging, the "in-joke" musical. Trailer Park, Altar Boys, Spelling Bee, and title of show are examples of this. These are shows that blur satire and exaggeration with real life all the while dealing in a specific subject matter.
"Trailer Park" is a hip, new and exciting piece of music theatre, even if not groundbreaking. For those who like to play it safe may I suggest the "20 Great Broadway ShowStoppers" CD - all songs are from 1932 to 1949. You will be sure no profane language will infect you there.
Wasn't That Funny.......2006-07-29
I gave this a good listen, but did not find it all that funny ... or memorable.

Released in late 1983, Pipes of Peace peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard album charts, thereby becoming the first Paul McCartney LP to run out of gas before reaching the U.S. top 10. Which is not to say that it deserved better--despite the well-meaning title track and the duet with Michael Jackson on "Say Say Say," Pipes of Peace marked a definite artistic low for Sir Paul. Coming on the heels of 1982's effervescent Tug of War, Pipes of Peace sounded surprisingly sleepy and uninspired, and the few half-decent songs ("Keep Under Cover," the unfortunately titled "So Bad") didn't stand a chance against the album's bland, state-of-the-'80s production values. "Say Say Say," a big improvement over "The Girl Is Mine," Macca and Michael's previous collaboration, easily outclasses the album's other tracks. Happily, you can also find it on All the Best, where it gets the company it deserves. --Dan Epstein
Customer Reviews:
This is Great!.......2007-05-25
I had this on cassette when I was a kid and I had the 45 to "SAY SAY SAY". being a music / CD collector one would think I would of had this years ago. The CD is even dated 1983 (did they make CDs back then?) Yup, and its a US release. Go figure. Deffinatly a nice collectible CD to own.
The ex-Beatle's fourth Columbia album.......2007-04-05
Sir Paul McCartney released his fourth Columbia album in the fall of 1983 with the Top 10 smash,SAY SAY SAY with the King Of Pop Michael Jackson. I'd say that was a reciprocation for McCartney's collaboration on THE GIRL IS MINE from Jackson's meagahit THRILLER. Other hits include the title track and SO BAD. Of all the aforementioned tracks, only the latter did not make it to the 2001 compilation WINGSPAN. The SSS video was totally awesome. I'd say the song was a smash due to Motown great Jackson's moral support. Even TGIM was a Top 20 hit.
Drownin' in a Sea of Love.......2006-10-12
No one has defended Paul McCartney's post-Beatles music more than me. This album, however, is indefensible. I recall purchasing it new in 1983, looking forward to more great music, especially on the heels of the 1982 masterpiece "Tug of War". I couldn't have been more disappointed.
The high point of this disc is reached at the very beginning. "Pipes of Peace" is one of the prettiest and most lyrically satisfying songs of Paul's post Beatles breakup work. Unfortunately, it is mostly downhill from there, with the notable exception of the last song on the album.
"Say Say Say" is catchy to a certain extent, and there is a nice interplay between the vocals of Michael Jackson and Paul, but it almost has the feel of a novelty song, as if Paul was using the (at the time)skyrocketing popularity of Jackson to drag himself to the top. If so, he was successful: "Say Say Say" was his last U.S. number one single.
"So Bad" is okay, but not "So Good". When I first heard this song on the radio, I couldn't even tell it was McCartney, due to the extreme falsetto vocalizing.
"Through Our Love" closes the album, and is a prime example of why McCartney is second to none when it comes to ballads. This love song is anything but silly, with great lyrics, a gorgeous melody, fabulous vocals, and a beautiful arrangement. It is one of Paul's most underrated songs.
The rest of the songs on "Pipes of Peace" range from boring to downright awful, with most sounding like throwaways, or "Tug of War" rejects. The 1980's production values and effects only heighten the weaknesses of these remaining tracks.
By far, though, the biggest dissapointment is the absolute, total, complete, absence of any songs that even come close to rocking on this album. It's as if McCartney didn't have a rock and roll song in him at this point. Maybe he was too content, too rich, too un-motivated, or too high. But never did he sound more like he needed John Lennon.
HA HA HA... YOU'vE Been Smoking your Pipe allright Pauly ol' BOY.... .......2006-02-11
...or then again Paul, maybe you didn't smoke enough of that nectar of God, your peace pipe, your friendly friend....
I mean, after all, what you lacked on this album was cReAtIvIty..... perhaps your friend Mary Jane could have helped you a bit more with that one.... I mean, darn man, you ain't in Tokyo anymore.......
Hey Paul.... you obviously didn't get by because
you didn't get high enough with that little help from your dear friend..... you were alone... but you didn't take that sweet sweet ride... what the heck happened to you man????????????....cuz those freaks was right in this case!!!! You didn't get High High High!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I M A BIG MACCA FAN.... JUST AVOID THIS ALBUM LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!
Mid 80s Middling.......2005-01-07
Now if you ask me, and folks interested in nadir and zenith often do, this here album was not Paul McCartney's zenith... but it twern't his nadir neither. This one is kind of middling with a few frilly bits and some interesting musicianship, but nothing that stands out as significant in a very significant catalogue. I guess that might could be why it managed, back in 1983, to get up to the #15 spot and stay there only for a week before slipping down and vanishing in to relative obscurity. This, as they say, was not one of his finer moments in musical history.
Despite this rather negative commencement to my review, he did manage to see three singles lifted off the album, "Say Say Say" and "Pipes of Peace" are memorable, but "So Bad" is kind of forgettable. The mid 80s were not bad for Paul, but they were not as thrilling as the mid to late 70s when he could do no wrong. Plus that, his fan base was getting older and the young folk who were plunking down pocket change for albums in the local record shops were starting to find interest elsewhere and Paul wasn't the ant's pants as far as they were concerned. It was, after all, the era when Michael Jackson was eclipsing everyone in Popdom and Paul McCartney (along with everyone else) was left in the wake.
Me and Mama care for this album like we care for all his mid 80s albums... it feels like a red headed stepchild in the family. You are obligated to care for them, but you don't take to them like your own. They come to the table to eat with you, but you always look at them and see them buck teeth and freckles and tussle of red hair and know that it ain't from your loins even though it might have taken your name. That's kind of how we feel about this here album. Junior, however, loves it because he likes to learn about Indians and Cowboys and Old West stuff and he associates Pipes of Peace with peace pipes... which he counts among the Indian lore of Hollywood Westerns.
This one is for the collectors and die hard fans. If you ain't in either of them groups, then I suggest you start your purchasing elsewhere... maybe with one of his compilation albums or with one that remained up in the charts for a longer period. That's my two cents worth... and with the weakening of the US dollar, two cents ain't worth nearly what it was worth back in 1983 when this thing came out.

Brian Jones's trip to Morocco in 1968 included a trip to the mountain village of Jajouka guided by painter Brion Gysin. What he recorded there introduced the world at large to the Master Musicians of Jajouka, initially released in 1971. Their music is based on ritual, but is still playful. The horns, chanting, and drums of this field recording are completely trancelike. It's a shame that phasing and panning has been added to the sound in an attempt to make it even more psychedelic because it stands perfectly well by itself without the effects. (You also have to wonder whether titles like "Your Eyes Are Like a Cup of Tea" are really literal translations from Aramaic). Still, this is perfectly classic stuff, celebrating the weeklong Rites of Pan festival and offering an almost religious experience to the listener. Anyone who doubts that music has the power to transport should begin here. A classic of world music. --Chris Nickson

Instant Classic.......2004-03-17
This is the record that started the interest in Jajouka. Since most was already said, I will just add what I think is missing from other reviews. The Jajouka village is Arabic-speaking, not Berber, and definitely not "Aramaic". Their traditions are typical of whole Morocco, which is an amalgalm of Andalusian/Arabic influence, Islam, and of course the ancient traditions of Berbers of North Africa. I think this is the best record about Jajouka since it sounds like a live recording of what could have been an eternal night. The instruments are solely ghaita (Moroccan oboe) as well as tbel and bendir percussions.
Many Jajouka records have sprung after this one, some are good and some are not, but this one is a must have.
If you like this music, check out other Berber records and make sure you go to Morocco to attend the various traditional music festivals throughout the year!
"Nothing is true, everything is permitted".......2004-03-10
Hassan i Sabbah's phrase, as translated by Brion Gysin, makes a fitting review for this album -- just as the other reviews reveal, everyone will find something different in it. The Master Musicians do indeed make music that is "headchanging" and "trancelike," but it's also music that will "scare many people" with its invocation of "the Pan in panic." The album is a field recording made in Morocco by Brian Jones and Brion Gysin in 1968, an edited document of ancient Lupercalia rituals dedicated to the god Pan that are hours, and sometimes days, long. (These rituals echo through every springtime rite, from Mardi Gras and Carnival to Easter.) And although the recording has been given a psychedelic gloss it doesn't really need, the result is hypnotic, powerful music, if the listener is open to it. This is an old, old trip -- and the album is the first of its kind.
Take Me With You, My Beloved.......2004-02-25
I don't know if Brion Gysin and Brian Jones and/or the Master Musicians of Jajouka made these recordings sound so strange on purpose, or if they just turned out that way. In any case the bizarre echo and phasing effects make this recording unlike any of the 5 or 6 other Jajouka recordings. But Bachir Attar loves it, so that's one high recommendation.
This music will scare ... many people. Others will be annoyed. Other people will fall in love with it, as I did. To hear this music as it is meant to be heard, you have to give yourself over to it completely, in whatever way that is best accomplished for you. Then you will abe able to hear the relationships of the repeated patterns in the 3 or 4 musical layers. These relationships can be extraordinarily complex, but sound as beautiful as a living arabesque unfolding itself would appear to the eyes.
The purpose of this music is to take you away. You can only find out where you are going if you take the journey.
A fitting memorial to Brian.......2003-02-26
This album...the very pipings of Pan, the ancient and forgotten rites of Lupercalia, discovered in 20th Century Morocco by Beatnicks, Junkies and Hippies? ABSOLUTELY.
The sounds made in this album send chills up my spine. This album reminds us that not only is the world stranger than we know, it is weirder than we CAN know. Everything is True. Nothing is Forbidden. These tapes will cause cold winds to blow through the canyons of your mind. The state of Pan is that of "Panic", and that is what you hear in these "songs."
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards caused this album to be posthumously released after Brian Jones unfortunate drowning/murder in the swimming pool of the house where A.A. Milne wrote Winnie-the-Pooh. Brian recorded these tapes several months before his death, intending to release them.
The Master Musicians.......2002-09-28
Recorded by Brian Jones with his friend, superhippie Brion Gysin, in July 1968, the tapes were edited in London by Brian. This was the first record released by the new Rolling Stones Records label in 1971 (after Brian died). Several authors claim the album started the world music movement that integrated non-Western music into the mainstream of rock.
The music is part of an ancient festival that has been linked by anthropologists to the Roman Lupercalia and the truly ancient prehistoric festivals of pan. It celebrates an ancient, pagan-Muslum tradition in the Moroccan village of Jajouka that is detailed in the linear notes by Gysin and Jones. You need to be prepared to appreciate the anthropological context of this music to enjoy it (and although Brian was on a different plane of reality when he recorded this music, he did have a genuine appreciation of the cultural context, as did Keith when he worked with the Master Musicians of Jajouka many years later).

Customer Reviews:
Great listening music.......2006-07-11
The Gordons know how to relax you. Great listening pleasure with a light Native American touch. This particular CD spans their music career from there previous CD's plus 3 new ones.
20 Years of Sacred Musical Vision.......2002-12-27
What a gift ! I feel incredibly fortunate to have been given the gift of the Gordon's 20th anniversary compilation album Sacred Drum Visions from my wife for the holidays. It is trully an exceptional collection and likely my favorite of the all the Gordon's releases thus far, as it contains many of the best tracks from their incredible highly-acclaimed native music series including Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine as well as 3 magnificent new tracks. The Gordon brothers music has really evolved in a number of unique ways over the years. And though their music stems from a native American influence it artfully combines sounds and instumentation from many indigenous cultures from around the world, making their sound trully universal; and this clearly shines through in this compilation. Perhaps the best thing about this particular release is the perfectly sequenced flow of each track into the next creating a sonic journey that reaches back in time and trancends the mundane world taking the listener on a journey of the Spirit and the Imagination. The 3 new tracks are really exceptional gems. I particularly like Faithkeeper Part I, which opens the CD and Light of the Canyon, the jewel within the center of these tracks. This CD is far more than a retrospective of the Gordon's amazing body of work, it is a powerful, transformative and healing musical journey of the heart. I highly recommend it.

Highland Pipes and Drums.......2007-03-09
This CD was wonderful, the music just captured you and each song had it own unique sound. My husband died in a fire and he always said he wanted bag pipe music played at this funeral. We used this CD and many people asked the name of the CD, they felt it made the funeral more meaningful. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to bagpipe music.
Look Somewhere Else.......2003-09-26
If you're looking for Pipe music you'll be most dissappointed by the amount of "accompanied" works on this CD
Please listen to some AMAZING music instead of this stuff..........2003-02-13
I picked this CD to write about because it's the #1 seller on Amazon for Bagpipes. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, people don't take this as what is going on in the Bagpipe & Drum world!!! This CD is ok for having many different Military Marches and that's about it!
Please listen to some of these bands to really experience the BEST of what this awesome music can bring: Shotts and Dykehead Caledonian Pipeband, Victoria Police Pipe Band, Strathclyde Police Pipe Band, 78th Frasiers, Boghall and Bathgate, and SFU.
Amazon actually sells some CD's from these bands. At least I know there is a Shotts CD.
This in not a definitive list, there are many other GREAT bands.
Lismor Recordings also has a series of the Actual Worlds best pipers and you can't get any better. Once you start listening to this stuff, you won't get anymore of these.. compellations.
Good practice CD.......2001-03-10
If you want to practice with a good tempo and get examples of setting .. this is a good CD.
Not Bad, Not Great!.......2000-02-05
I love military and police pipe bands, and for the most part, this CD delivers the real thing. One unfortunate choice of music sounded like it was performed by "Alvin and the Highland Chipmunks", and has generated a lot of amusement in my office whenever it plays.
