    Album Description

Our Shangri-La, the new album of duets from veteran Southern California country singers Rick Shea and Patty Booker not only exemplifies the West Coast's once vibrant honky-tonk tradition, it damn well resurrects a free-wheeling artistic spirit that is in danger of extinction. Recorded with ace musicians, the album mixes brand new originals with a couple of choice old favorites into a complex and rewarding series of emotional and psychological statements. Our Shangri-La draws from the Wynn Stewart-Jan Howard/Buck Owens-Rose Maddox school of California pairings even as it drives contemporary expression dramatically forward, the classic blend of standard approach and chance-taking that has always characterized California country.

4 out of 5 stars Revitalizing the Country duet.......2004-01-25

Duet singing has fueled country music since its beginnings, both in family acts like the Delmores and Louvins, and superstar pairings like Dolly & Porter and Conway & Loretta. Nashville's recent duets have tended more toward marketing events than career paths, leaving those outside the mainstream to carry the torch. Shea and Booker, veterans of Southern California's honky-tonk scene, fan the flames of the country duet with a strong dose of the Golden State's recalcitrant twang.

The pair of singer-songwriters first met as disc-mates on 1992's "A Town South of Bakersfield, Vol. 3." Then, as now, they charted a course through Bakersfield, with Shea's tenure in Dave Alvin's Guilty Men adding a helping of roots-rock energy. Booker's voice is reminiscent of Rosie Flores, but together with Shea, especially on tunes like "The Bull and The Beaver," they recreate the high-low magic of The Kendalls.

Beyond a few covers, such as the trail-dusted "Summer Wine," the duo's own arrangements and songs form the album's impressive core. The spare "You Take Me for Granted" would break the heart of Merle Haggard's original protagonist, and Shea's "Just a Matter of Time" crackles with the magnetism of Johnny & June.

Shea's production keeps the voices front-and-center without short-changing the fine instrumentalists who set up the album's mood. Special mention must be given to steel player Gary Brandin, whose haunting runs, bell-like peels and weeping bends are nearly a third voice within the duets. This is an exquisite album that impresses upon first play, and reveals more charms with every spin.

5 out of 5 stars the golden days of duets.......2004-01-05

Our music-if you are reading this you know what I mean-doesn't get much radio play as it falls between the niches, but in our kind of music a renaissance of glorious male female duets is taking place, and this is a prime example. Rick and Patty play off each others voices and styles beautifully; there is no way that a solo artist can make this sort of thing happen-not a bad track on the cd, hardly a bad 5 seconds. Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriquez are the current aces in this area, but that is mostly because of their totally masterful song-writing- in terms of musicality there is little to chose between the acts-and there is no higher praise than that.

5 out of 5 stars Country Music The Way It Should Be.......2003-12-31

A magnificent album from start to finish, and every cut is a gem. Patty Booker has an incredible voice and range from the depths of sorrow to sheer joy and the best of honky tonk. Rick Shea is an outstanding musician, song writer and vocalist. The pairing of their soulful and distinctive voices gives an added dimension to the songs that make them duets in the best sense of the word, as their voices wonderfully compliment each other. The material and performances are all first rate with outstanding original songs and terrific interpretations of classics.

Fans of tough-to-peg Texans such as Joe Ely and Doug Sahm ought to give this singer and accordion player a good listen. A fixture on the Southern California country and roots-rock scene for the better part of the '80s and '90s, Gaffney stirs up an appealing blend of Bakersfield honky-tonk, soul, garage rock, and conjunto music. The "then some" part of this two-CD set is actually a straight reissue of his cult-classic 1986 debut, The Road to Indio. Gaffney's accordion bounces vibrantly off Gary Brandin's pedal steel while Gaffney's songwriting boasts a knack for clever country wordplay on honky-tonkers like "Don't Let Love Tear Apart (What Lust Has Brought Together)" and "Alcoholidays." Gaffney would actually release two acclaimed Hightone albums during the 1990s before he got to the "live" part of this two-CD set, recorded in March of 1999. The intervening 13 years made Gaffney's already gruff voice that much gruffer though his lighthearted spirit and tangy musical stew remain undiminished. Here he balances nifty originals with covers of Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Bill Anderson's defiant "The Lord Knows I'm Drinkin'," a country No. 1 hit for Cal Smith in 1973 and a perfect manifesto for this Tex-Mex twister. --Marc Greilsamer

    Album Description

This is a two CD package. Disk 1 is Chris Gaffney and the Cold Hard Facts recorded live at The Swallows Inn in San Juan Capistrano, CA, at their honky-tonkin', road house best. Disk 2 is the re-release of their legendary 1986 vinyl only LP, "Road to Indio."

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bar Band in the World Captured Live.......2000-08-25

Outside of Orange County, California most people don't know who Chris Gaffney is. Actually, there aren't all that many people in Orange County who know much about him either.

THAT'S THEIR LOSS. The Cold Hard Facts are the greatest bar band in the world, and Chris Gaffney is probably the most likeable and best sounding band leader you will ever listen to or see live.

This is a 2-disc set which inlcudes a re-release of a previous album and the other disc is a live recording of the band when it played the Swallow's Inn in San Juan Capistrano, California. The re-release disc is fine, the live disc is one of the best live recordings you will ever hear.

Gaffney plays country, zydeco, Joe Ely-style tex-mex, R&B, you name it. He understands how music can move people on an emotional level. Most of time, the emotion will include a smile on your face, although he can get the tears flowing with songs like 1968. Although you can't characterize the type of music he plays, you can characterize the quality of what he does, and it's impressive.

Buy this record and see him live, especially if he is playing with his close friend and sometimes songwriting partner Dave Alvin.

    Album Description

When Nadine showed up at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach, she expected straight-up new-fangled country western she could Boot Scoot Boogie to. What she got was $1000 Wedding - irreverent, sometimes negative, sometimes whining but always melodic and honest. Nadine was unhappy because she couldn't do her favorite - the Electric Slide -so she passed a note to the band complaining about the tunes. Two of the boys in the band were so amused that they wrote, independently of each other, a song about Nadine. Those results, along with 10 other great tunes, are contained on this, their latest release - affectionately entitled, Nadine's Probably Right.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Music for beautiful losers.......2004-10-06

Great alternative country. Rock slides into country and back into pop, all presented blissfully too raw for mass consumption. If you remember the Windbreakers, this is sort of like them, a bit edgier and quite a bit more fun.

4 out of 5 stars Inventive. original. fun........2004-03-04

A difficult-to-classify LA band gliding under the radar, $1000 wedding blends a variety of tasteful influences into a very hip, occasionally dark take on life in sunny California. Gram Parsons comes to mind, of course, not just in the group's name but in his refusal to accept genre limitations. This isn't really country, isn't really sixties rock or Beatlesque pop, but it takes elements from many styles and creates a singular vision and style. The songwriting is of a calibre far higher than many more successful bands and is what really sets $1000 Wedding apart.
If you've ever enjoyed the kind of rootsy, intelligent, substantive music that never comes out of the radio anymore, grab this.

    Album Description

In January 2002, Los Angeles area roots and country stalwart Rick Shea and the "phenomenally talented" fiddler and singer Brantley Kearns started work on a project they had discussed between themselves for three or four years. They decided to record a collection of older songs, some reworked traditional melodies, songs by California folk icons Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin and a few of Rick and Brantley's own understated originals. The album is based loosely on the connection between the music and traditions of North Carolina where Brantley grew up and the more contemporary folk and country music of California that they both have spent the better part of their lives playing. The result is a great new disk entitled "Trouble and Me". It is named after the Buck Owens classic written by Harlan Howard and given a new interpretation by Rick and Brantley. The combination of Brantley`s eclectic fiddle playing and suberb singing and Rick's rock solid guitar work and deep expressive vocals is a sure winner for upstart Tres Pescadores Records.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best alt.country albums of 2002.......2003-01-14

A delicious, acoustic-based set of well chosen old-timey and old-school country tunes, ranging from dimly-recalled gems such as Jim Ringer's "Rachel," Mary McCaslin's "San Bernadino Waltz," Harlan Howard's "Trouble and Me," and the gentle hobo anthem "Loafer's Glory." Fiddler Brantley Kearns has one of those great, gruff, grizzled-sounding voices that I love to hear, calling to mind folks like Larry Hosford and U. Utah Phillips. This is an excellent, thoroughly enjoyable album, one that would be easy to miss out on, since indie artists have such a tough time with distribution these days. Dave Alvin, whose band both these guys play in, produced this disc, with a light, unobstrusive touch. Fans of the relaxed style of old 1970s-era alt.country will appreciate this disc: I say snap it up while you still have the chance!

5 out of 5 stars Unmitigated joy and unbeatable toe-tapping.......2002-06-09

Wow. I have seen these two gentlemen perform numerous times with Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men and know how talented they are. Still, I was not prepared for how terrific this album would be. Rick's low-key yet expressive delivery is perfect for the folkier selections here, while Brantley's voice is ideal for the more old timey songs. The instrumental backing, the arrangements, the sound... they are all hard to beat. If you liked the recent Jim Lauderdale/Ralph Stanley CD, I think it's a cinch that you'll like this as well.
