Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16

I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.

a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21

I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."

The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.

Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.

My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.

This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Okay, but not great.......2007-02-25

To echo another reviewers sentiments, RELEASE THE COMPLETE ALBUMS!!
This CD is okay because this is the only place to get some of these old tracks on CD. There are also some unreleased live tracks, but from who knows where because Columbia thought it too much trouble to provide the recording info in the liner notes. This CD is way too short, and most of the live tracks exist in better versions ON THE ORIGINAL LP'S!!! I was really hoping for some exciting new material, and I thought I would get just that when I saw "Wars of Germany" in the track listing. I had never seen or heard of the song before. What I got was one of the worst performances of a Clancy/Makem song EVER. This should never have made it out of the vault. Overall, an okay CD, but don't expect anything new.

Where's the Rest of Their Catalogue?.......2005-07-05

Chances are that those reading my review already have a concept of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. So, with a nod to the knowing, I'll begin: In the early 60s, more than one musical quartet from across the Atlantic got a boost from going on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW. When this particular team did the show, the folk-music fans responded positively, but a demographic which had not yet been tapped also suddenly made its spending-power known. The vast Irish-American consumer block wended its way to the record store and Columbia had a fairly unlikely hit. Of course, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem had been playing clubs in Greenwich Village for three or four years and had recorded a lot of songs for a label Tom and Pat Clancy had founded, "Tradition." But, by the time they made their first record for Columbia, their singing had become incredibly forceful and distinct. From 1961 (or '62) until 1969, the team recorded at least ten full-length albums for Columbia, some live, many in the studio. Eric Weissberg (who had a hit in the early '70s with "Dueling Banjos") often played on the Columbia recordings and their first Columbia album featured him and Pete Seeger. In short, the Clancies and Makem were in top vocal form here and had the best musicians in the business backing them. Makem's tin whistle was of course at its hypnotic best. These were funny, exciting, moving albums. The bulk of them are NOT available on CD. THE LUCK OF THE IRISH has tracks from various times in the sixties, some of which made it to the albums and some which are either alternate takes or which were never used. "Home Boys Home" is marvelous and sounds like the exact recording on the unavailable-on-CD LP HOME BOYS HOME except that a rhythm guitar has been removed. Like other releases by Sony (which IS Columbia)
the booklet tells you very little about the Clancies progression in the sixties. Is there some taboo on telling the fans which albums came out when? It's as if some Soviet bureaucrat were given the keys to the Clancy vault and caused most of their recordings to vaporize before the wall came down. This is not only really good music, it's important to the Irish folk movement, and it's not on CD. Bob Dylan, thankfully, invited the Clancy Brothers to sing at the Madison Square Garden tribute to him in 1992, so people will, through that CD, run into the Clancy Brothers, but Sony otherwise seems to try to keep them hidden. A bunch of CDs of random tracks packaged for a Saint Patrick's Day audience does no justice to this seminal folk group. Here, off the top of my head is a list of their Columbia LPs. So, two, count 'em, two actual albums have made it to CD and the other CDs are culled from different albums with many, many tracks left off. May I also point out that at least three of these are concept albums. HEART AND HELLISH, for example, is a truly well recorded live nightclub performance and the audience, roaring with laughter and cheering and, at solemn moments, almost prayerfully quiet, is as much a part of the recording as the group. Did some manager throw this stuff in some legal hell-hole? It's as if only two stories from DUBLINERS were allowed to surface. What gives?
So, if you buy LUCK OF THE IRISH you'll like the songs. But they jump back and forth through the Clancies 60s career. Why not allow the CDs to reflect the albums, as is done with the Clancy Brothers' friend Bob Dylan? And if the answer is "The album's are short," MY answer will be, put two on one disc. But put them in order and let's hear them in their entirety!

Great CD to purchase.......1999-05-04

This CD is one of my favorites because it really adds a punch to a party. With Liam Clancy's soft mellow voice to Tommy Makem's deep baritone voice, it is a full clash and collide.

Fantastc Work From Hartford!!!.......2001-07-19

OK, aside from the fact that I used to handle PR for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, I would still rave about this recording. Fritz Mahler (related to the great Gustav Mahler) took the HSO to new heights with a series of recordings taken from The Bushnell in Hartford. Outstanding sound quality truly enhances the amazing music of Purcell. A must have for Purcell and classical fans alike. Also check about The HSO's recording of Carmina Burana, the first ever recording of the piece.

An outstanding Purcell disc.......2000-09-22

The performances here are very satisfying, the Purcell suites interspersed with dreamy sequences of harpsichord pieces. This is a reissue from several decades ago that once again shows how sensitive modern digital remastering can bring out the best in such recordings. Some would find things to pick at, but this is one of the most satisfying Purcell CD's to have ever come my way. Its a modern instrument reading, but don't let that put you off. This isn't old instrument bowing and scraping. Its music making of a high order and you can't beat the price.

Couldn't Be More Pleased!.......2003-03-06

What a wonderful find! Song's range in feel from the comically absurd to the tragic. I especially liked the live numbers....those guys could certainly play to a crowd!
Personal favorites: "The Jolly Tinker", "The Old Orange Flute", "Mr. Moses Ri-Tooral-I-Ay"(a case of mistaken identity. Hebrew may look like Gaelic to the uninitiated), "Peggy Gordon", "William Bloat(a black comedic advertisement for Belfast linen!), "The Juice of the Barley", and "Master McGrath". I highly recommend this boxed set to any Irish music fan. Heck, I recommend it to ANY music fan! Slainte!

I have all 3 of these cds and they are really good. the sound is great and tommy makem is really good. if like the clancy brothers and tommy makem, you wil like this cd.

The Emerald Society of Wisconsin 2005 Brendan Heart Fund The Brendan Heart Fund was started at Milwaukee Children's Hospital in 1987 in memory of young Brendan Ward. It supports cardiac care for children, including diagnosis, treatment, and research. In 1990 the Emerald Society of Wisconsin selected the Brendan Heart Fund as it's charity, and began raising funds on it's behalf. In January of 2005, Child Magazine rated the cardiac program of Milwaukee Children's Hospital as one of the top five programs of its kind in the United States. The artists on this album have generously donated their music to help raise funds for this deserving cause. They come from Ireland, Atlantic Canada, and the United States and have joined their hands and hearts to help children in need.
