5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful music!.......2007-07-07

Listening to this Gottschalk CD hs been a truly rewarding experience. We listen to it everyday, so I'm sure we will be purchasing more of his music.

5 out of 5 stars A very powerful performance.......2006-12-15

June 7, 2003
This is a very powerful performance by Licad, the first in a long
while. I had a chance to compare her recording with an earlier
recording of Gottschalk's piano works by another (relatively unknown)
pianist, and I must say that the latter recording pales miserably
in comparison to Licad's. Listening to Licad play in this recording,
I can't help but be reminded of Vladimir Horowitz's piano performances
during his heyday. Licad and Horowitz have very similar touch, intensity,
technical prowess and dynamic range. There are 16 piano works works in
this recording, and I must say that all are top caliber performances,
with the possible exception of track #9, Souvenirs de Porto Rico,
Marche de Gibaros, Op.31, where Licad seems to have missed a few
notes and desynchronized the rhythm in a few places. My favorites
are tracks #5 (Tremolo, Grande Etude de Concert), #7 (Manchega,
Etude de Concert), and track #14 (Tournament Galop); in the last
one, you can almost see and hear the horses galloping around the
race track. With the price ... this recording is a genuine steal.
However, I am still waiting to hear Licad play a Liszt, Brahms,
Prokofoiev or Bartok, where I believe we can really hear Horowitz
come alive.

3 out of 5 stars Shock treatment.......2005-04-11

There are plenty of other pianists who have played Gottschalk's music. These include Eugene List, Alan Mandel, John Arpin, Alan Marks, Philip Martin, and my favorite, Michael Lewin.

This disc has a very good selection of Gottschalk's music. Still, I do not always like Licad's interpretations of his works. Nor is her playing especially clean.

Le banjo, an excellent piece, is played too fast. Give this lady a speeding ticket! Bamboula is played unusually slowly, and there are even a couple of presumably intentional minor errors in rhythm in it. I think it is okay to play parts of it slowly, as Licad did, for dramatic effect, but I am not overly impressed by her performance of it.

When we reach another fine piece, La Savane, the intentional errors in rhythm get worse. I have never heard La Savane played like this before, and I don't like it.

Next is Tremolo. I think Licad does a fine job on this one, both technically and interpretively. And I also like her interpretations of Manchega and The Dying Poet.

Souvenir de Porto Rico is perhaps Gottschalk's best work, and it is technically very difficult. This would have been a great opportunity for Licad to show that she can handle the task. But she chose to do otherwise. It is disappointing.

Most of this disc is simply not Gottschalk as it ought to be played. If someone unfamiliar with Gottschalk wanted to listen to a CD with some of Gottschalk's best works on it, I'd normally recommend one with this set of pieces. But I certainly wouldn't recommend this. I'll give it two stars just for Tremolo, and one more for shock value.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite make it.......2003-11-11

Cecile Licad is a fine pianist, but she's not right for this. Maybe she's trying to put too much "Artistry" into these instead of virtuosic fire, although perversely she plays some pieces too fast. This is still quite nice, considering the low price, but don't throw away your old Leonard Pennario LP's.

5 out of 5 stars An exuberant blazing Gottchalk interpretation.......2003-09-19

Ms. Licad's Gottchalk interpretations on her latest CD is a pioneering effort in presenting the essential Gottchalk. She could have opted for the "safe and traditional " molded from other previous interpretations. But on this CD, she has opened a whole new world about the possibilities of Gottchalk's music who typifies the wondrous cultural influences here in the United States. Her performance is riveting, exuberant, blazing, virtuosic and always with a keen individual musicality that manages to always pay homage to what is essentially Gottchalk's. That is a feat in itself. I highly recommend this CD which should be CD of the Year.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive?.......2006-07-17

This version of the underappreciated work of Alkan should, in deference to Marc Andre Hamelin's amazing versions, should probably be the standard by which others are judged... in addition the album includes a great collection in one purchase.

5 out of 5 stars WELL worth getting........2006-05-19

This CD has what is still my favorite interpretation of Alkan's Concerto out of the three I've heard (although regrettably I haven't heard Jack Gibbons' version). Ogdon and Hamelin seem to kind of rush parts in order to impart a greater sense of technical bravura whereas Smith lets the power and majesty of the piece come through.
Also a great recording of the Alkan Symphonie. Hamelin's playing of the piece seems to have gotten all the attention but I find this one just right.
The prior two pieces would be reason enough to get any Alkan CD but this one is also loaded with a number of smaller gems, some of which it's probably going to be, what, twenty years before someone else makes a recording of any of them. The Petit Conte and Nocturne show Alkan's similarities to Chopin. The Toccatina is a delightful little piece with an awesome ending. Five great preludes, eight esquisses, etc. etc. - probably the best Alkan CD out there.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Remastering!.......2005-07-15

I own the original LP recordings of some of these works and the CD version. In a previous review I remarked how the CD sound quality was not the best, but adequate.

This remastering brings back much of the original vitality and great sound quality that was in the LP version but lacking in the CD version. And all at a bargain price too!

All Alkan (and Ronald Smith fans),don't hesitate to get this 2CD set. To have the symphony for piano and concerto in such fine quality sound again is a real treat for the ears.

Most highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Pianist/Inspirational Composer.......2004-09-03

Ronald Smith died on the 27 May 2004 a week before I was due to hear him perform in concert at the age of 82. Obviously I was incredibly upset by his death and not having ever heard him play - especially ALKAN.

Ronald Smith was the man who re-established Charles-Valentin Alkan as one of the greatest composers of piano music. Busoni claimed "Alkan, alongside Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Brahms, was one of the five greatest composers for the piano since Beethoven".

Of particular interest here is Ronald Smiths recordings of the Solo Piano Concerto and Symphony for Solo Piano. These are some of the most extraordinary compositions in musical literature.

Ronald Smith's recordings are exceptional and in my mind can only be equalled technically by Marc-André Hamelin performances of Alkan. Yet with this said Ronald Smith was the only virtuoso pianist who truly understood Alkans philosophy of music - hence smith's book on Alkan - The Man The Music.

This album is highly recommended to all music and piano playing enthusiasts.
The music is innovative, passionate; but not sentimental and incredibly interesting in structure, colouring and philosophy.

Disc 2 of this new collection, the solo piano pieces, has been doing good service for well over a decade. Marks plays a good variety of Gottschalk music, sparkles in the virtuoso pieces, and even manages to keep a straight face when he plays sentimental tripe like "The Last Hope" and "The Dying Poet." As the only important composer produced by the U.S. in the 19th century, Gottschalk still deserves our attention, and his folk-influenced pieces are still fun to hear. Oddly, the four-hand piano recording is inferior to the solo piano disc; it sounds thin and shrill, evidently not the pianists' fault since Marks plays with beautiful tone in his solo disc. Also, more of this music comes from Gottschalk's sentimental salon style, making the program a bit less attractive. But there is still a lot of fun to be had, especially in the concluding "Grande Tarantelle." So, if you regard disc 1 as a free bonus and disc 2 as the real matter, you're definitely getting your money's worth here. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars I Only Wish I Could Have Met Him.......2007-01-18

Like the title suggest, I wish I had met hime before his death in 2001. Even though this disc is of original, "poorer quality" recordings, you can still hear Mule's mastery of timbre and vibrato. You can also tell that Mule was originally a violinist from his use of vibrato. I had fellow musician listen to these recordings without telling him who it was and the instrument, and he immediately thought srings. I recently had the opportunity to met and play with Eugene Rousseau, a former student of Marcel Mule and a saxophone genius. I also have the honor of studying under a star pupil of Rousseau, Anna Marie Wytko. Rousseau discussed Mule and through these recordings and my meeting him, I understand why Marcel Mule is called "Le Patron".

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recordings of Vintage Music.......2005-01-05

This recording is fabulous. Marcel Mule's vibrato while considered outdated, is beautiful, his sound is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Technique, intonation and articulation are some of the best ever. His playing is light and accurate. His playing reflects a sound, that should be strived for, even when playing contemporary music. When he plays fast passages, it is still musical. The recording does not leave an empty feeling of, "WOW, he played and tongued really fast!" But one of awe at his ability to control and manipulate the saxophone is to doing whatever he wants. Since all of these Mule recordings are dated between 1930 adn 1940, they were recorded on LPs, and the background noise that is heard the noise that would be heard if listenting to an original LP, it most likely hasn't been taken out to preserve the original quality of the recording to prevent the loss of certain pitches and overtones that are contained in the recording.
This Marcel Mule CD is one that should be owned by all saxophonists.

5 out of 5 stars THE essential saxophone recording........2003-07-31

I can now truly understand why Marcel Mule is considered "Le Patron" after hearing this album. On every single piece, he performs with impecible musicality: tight articulations, great breath control, nice understanding of volume, and tone and vibrato that a great violinist would kill for. Another interesting aspect is the excerpt from Francois Combelle, showing a history of how the instrument used to be played as if it were a clarinet.

Every single saxophonist should own this album, for it is a perfect example of how the saxophone is supposed to be played.

4 out of 5 stars A Foundational Recording for MOdern Saxaphone.......2003-01-27

Marcel Mule was one of the founding fathers of the "classical saxaphone." Becasue of it's youth, the saxaphone is many times disregarded as a legitimate instrument. If nothing else, Mule has gone beyond the call of duty in this wonderful cd to prove any and all of those accusations wrong.
Mule has conquered some exraordinary compositions on this recording. He has taken such a youthful instrument and has given age which in turn, encompasses the soul and feeling that classical music presents in almost any setting. For an insturment that was so scientifically crafted, Mule has given the saxaphone life and colors. His intonation is almost infallable. He has a dark, deep and rich sound that resonates on every longer tone. And his vibrato just sings as any stringed instrument would do.
While the recording is a little fuzzy, which is probably due to it's date of recording, and, or that the recording was done from a distance, and in a hall, the purchase is well worth it. To be able to hear one of the leading forerunners in this still somewhat sub-cultural group of performers is a wonderful experience. So much can be learned from this cd.

5 out of 5 stars An old favorite of mine updated.......2007-07-08

Gottschalk wrote a lot of very pleasing and colorful if not very deep piano music. Deep has its place, but not every moment is a Bach organ moment, and this is wonderful music when you want to relax to something light. Gottschalk drew on African American and American Folk influences as well as his formal training in Paris to produce a new sound for the mid nineteenth century. Not really classical, but not yet with the structure or sophistication of the later rag and jazz, it's really just Gottschalk. I first encountered Amiram Rigai playing this music years ago on a Musical Heritage Society cassette. A lot of pianists have done credible recordings of Gottschalk, but to me this is how his pieces should sound. This is a terrific CD.

5 out of 5 stars Charming Music with a Light Touch.......2003-09-04

Having played some of these melodies as a student, I know them well. However, I have never heard such a marvelous rendition because the artist's hands seemed to fly over the keyboard, scarcely touching the keys but not missing a note. The rhythms are lively, and the contrasts wonderful. The music is light and undemanding, but if you listen carefully there's a lot to hear!

3 out of 5 stars Dance Rhythm Misssing.......2004-12-24

It seems that Martin wasn't able to produce the dance-like figures in Gottschalk music, specifically, the Latin and Creolean rhythm. The "Banjo" is played too slow - it seems that he literally lived by its Moderato tempo. I am much more awed with martin just playing the slow pieces.

But I recommend CECILE LICAD's Naxos Gottschalk recording over this.

4 out of 5 stars An American composer who is not so well-known.......2003-05-20

Frédéric Chopin predicted that Gottschalk would become one of the foremost pianists of that century. His virtuosity can be seen in the compositions on this album--The Banjo is an uncanny re-creation of the sound of American banjo folk tunes. These pieces are grand, florid, and are designed to show off pianistic skill. They are not deep compositions.

Gottschalk is not particularly well-known these days, but he had a successful concert career and his music was popular. He died at age 40, collapsing on stage in Brazil, right after playing a piece called "Morte" (Death) in concert.

4 out of 5 stars Gottschalk by List.......2001-09-28

Charming piano solos. Portents of Ragtime and Copeland that will come in the future. Pieces use many piano skills not usually played in such a clear way. (Would be good recital pieces for moderately advanced piano students.) Just well done and lots of fun for someone who thinks the piano is special all by itself. Also, an eye-opener for those who listen for familiar folk melodies in unfamiliar style.

4 out of 5 stars Good disc for pianists who want to play Gottschalk.......2000-04-05

Technically brilliant, but the disc was actually recorded in 1956, and as a result the sound quality is somewhat tinny.

I received the music book "Piano Music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk" (Dover, Richard Jackson, ed. -- highly recommended!) for my birthday, and needed a CD that let me know what the songs should sound like. (I hate to count, and have a lousy sense of rhythm.) This CD contained more of the songs in the book than any other I could find.

For a general introduction to all periods of Gottschalk's piano music, I'd suggest "Selected Piano Music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk" by Lambert Orkis (Smithsonian Collection of Recordings, 1988). The Orkis disc was recorded in 1982, and the sound quality is excellent. Orkis plays a Chickering grand piano of the sort that Gottschalk hauled around with him on tour, and the pieces shine brilliantly when played on the instrument for which they were written.

Harpist Emily Mitchell has come up with an interesting program of French Romantic and Impressionist works for solo harp. Chances are, if you're not a harp enthusiast, you haven't heard these pieces and you're not familiar with composers like Alphonse Hasselmans and Marcel Tournier, both central figures in the instrument's development. Harp buffs will love this, though, and the rest of us will enjoy it in smaller bites of four or five tracks at a time or find it ideal background music. Serious listening is rewarded by the subtle colors and medieval atmosphere evoked by Fauré in his Une Châtelaine en sa Tour, the gentle lilting melodies of Tournier's Six Noëls, Hasselmans' dreamy Réverie, and Mitchell's lovely adaptation of a Fauré Nocturne. First-rate playing and engineering. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Charles Valentin Alkan: "The Berlioz of piano".......2006-07-26

The weird creative universe of Alkan, his well marked introspection as well as his febrile activity in which concerns the expressive possibilities of the piano, surrounded him of a sort of mysterious halo.

His introspectiveness exerted on the audiences, caution, veiled admiration and a certain misgiving. His lyricism was not precisely direct. He faded into oblivion until the second half of the XX Century when Roland Smith, John Ogdon, Raymond Lewenthal, Michael Ponti, Bernard Ringeissen and lastly the renowned pianist Marc Andre Hamelin have really worried to make of him a better known composer, and judging by the nourished list of new recordings of Alkan, the result has been pretty fruitful.

This album presents a set of interesting piano pieces, that it would be extremely advisable to take into account, in case you are a true musical archeologist, incessantly active for searching the enormous number of unknown Op. and treasures to find out.

Laurent Martin is solvent pianist with a broad range of sonorities. Ringeissen is besides other untiring pianist always receptive to new sounds.

Iron horse, Op. 27 is perhaps, the most astonishing and original piece of the album, plenty of suggestive sonorities and wild beauty.

      5 out of 5 stars (No title)........2000-12-15

This is an excellent, excellent disc. However, the content is only selections duplicated from complete recorded performances previously available (in their entirety) on Marco Polo by Bernard Ringeissen and Laurent Martin... This is an excellent introduction to Alkan, no doubt, and the price is beautiful! However, you may be a little wary after buying this (which is basically a great hits compilation) to go for the more serious stuff available elsewhere... Most likely unnecessary purchases for Alkaholics.

4 out of 5 stars Great value for money.......2000-10-06

I'm not really a great fan of Naxos. I am, however, a great fan of romantic pianists, and since Alkan was one of the and the Naxos recording was the only one I could get...well, I had to buy it! And I'm glad I did. This recording is amazing! First of all, I was amazed by the many aspects in Alkans music, but even more so by the quality of the recording. Ever note stands out and is perfectly clear (well, as clear as can be when it's alkan we are talking about!). The two performers are obviously the right choice for this recording and it's a shame that I haven't heard of them before. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Alkans music, this is $6 well spend...just wait till you hear "The Railway", that is simply amazing, it's a wonder that anyone is actually playing like that! a really good cheap recording like this is hard to find, so do yourself a favour and buy it!
