The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

It swept me away!.......2002-12-01

The first time I heard this album was on a flight to Alaska in deep winter. Each time I hear it, I am transported to the vast ice and snow in the twilight of an arctic day and I can feel the wind against my face and see the brilliance of the Northern Lights. I have shared this album with many of my clients, I am a massage therapist, and would recommend it for anyone who craves a musical experience that is unique and memorable. I own three copies of this album! Enjoy!

Yet it's better than that -- this music can serve as either background vibes when that's what you want, or interesting and subtle music to listen to carefully. Pearce is one of the best at his genre, whatever that genre is.

A truly delicate album. Each melody creates a carefully crafted ambiance fostering subtlety, feeling and imagination. It perfectly complements the enjoyment of seeing for instance the Hubble Ultra Deep Field view of a tiny portion of the Universe. Misleading advertising.......2000-12-15

I bought this CD because the ads (here on amazon.com) compared it to Tim Story, one of my favorites. While there are some basic similarities in genre, I find that Pearce's style is less evocative and more drone-like. I expected Pearce to be different, and found him to be boring.

Superlative guitar atmospherics.......2000-03-19

I'll have to second the review below. This is a superb album of chiming guitar atmospherics, with the spectral radiance of light through stained glass. Though it may be an obscure reference, this album brings me to much the same place as the Cocteau Twin's "Victorialand" album.

THE HIDDEN RIFT is a superb ambient/space music album........1999-06-28

On THE HIDDEN RIFT, guitarist extraordinaire Jeff Pearce has produced music of sublime beauty, peace and introspection. Using just guitars and studio wizardry, Pearce brings forth slow patient washes of melodic warmth, drifting spacy ambience, and wave after wave of audio bliss. While two songs do sound like a guitar produced the music, the majority of this sounds like synthesizer (but it isn't!). The music is never ostentatious or melodramatic. Instead, it is minimal and suffused with a fragile beauty in the same way that Tim Story's keyboards are. It is ideal music for relaxing late at night, especially in the dark. Haunting, sublime, and exquisitely recorded, it is a must-have for lovers of either space or ambient music.

Deeply exudes serenity in any space.......1999-06-18

I have had this title on a cassette for over 3 years, and it is one I reach for constantly when I just want to feel more of love, gentleness, peace and connect with my spirit. I am going to get this on CD......it is hauntingly sacred music and most people ask me "who is that" when they hear it playing. It aids me in coming to that still place deep inside........

The life of Teresa Sterne is as noteworthy as the label she once presided over (Nonesuch). As a child prodigy, she successfully filled world-class auditoriums in the 1940s with audiences eager to hear her piano playing. Then, inexplicably, Sterne abandoned her concert career only to resurface as the leader behind Nonesuch Records in the late 1960s, turning the budget classical label into one of the more adventurous and consistently rewarding labels around (and generally keeping quiet about her earlier fame). Half of this double-CD tribute collects recordings of a teenage Sterne at the keyboard; the second disc is devoted to some of the finest recordings from her Nonesuch tenure (1965-1979)--both are engrossing.

Ignore the surface noise on Sterne's disc (no small task on the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20), and you'll hear a young pianist in fine form--she is expressive, and boasts crisp articulation and fine technique. She dances through Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 with riveting intensity; on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (with the New York Philharmonic), she shows a sensitive but no less virtuosic side. On the second disc, we get a virtual best-of for Nonesuch Records, including tracks by Joshua Rifkin, Paul Jacobs, and William Bolcom. Hard to imagine anyone doing it these days, but in one five-year period (1970-1975), Nonesuch released albums featuring the music of Stephen Foster, Edgar Varese, George Crumb, and a platter of Bulgarian folk tunes. They're all here. Now battling Lou Gehrig's disease, Sterne herself may be unable to celebrate this release, but for anyone who has treasured a release from Nonesuch's glory days, it's a moving tribute. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

The Incas linked much of their daily life with their religious beliefs and, therefore, with nature inasmuch as they worshipped the elements, such as the sun, the moon, thunder, pachamama (mother earth) and many other marvels of nature. For thousands of years, cultures around the world worshipped the sun - the element vital to life. During pre-Inca and Inca civilization, Tat-Inti (Sun God), was the most important of the many gods to worship. The Incas considered themselves to be direct descendants of the Tat-Inti and called themselves Sons of Tat-Inti. Consequently, they dedicated their lives to the sun god by holding special religious ceremonies and festivals year round. Thus Inkuyo's newest release of traditional and contemporary Andean music is titled Ancient Sun, after track 5, Sol Milenario.

Reconstructing the musical rhythms born from numerous cultural mixes and influences with Bolivia, Inkuyo offers listeners a variety of these Andean-born rhythms while simultaneously emulating the sounds of ancient songs, dances and festivals which remain popular and celebrated today.

Flowing flawlessly, the music ranges from sensual and cadent tempos, romantic and sensual rhythms, a two-part rhythm that is a slow and sad melody ending with an energetic format breaking the sad spell, lively and beautiful melodies, and capturing the natives yearning for their homeland.

Ancient Sun follows in the same tradition as Inkuyo's other recordings. Listeners are thoughtfully and joyfully transposed to the ancient history of the pre-Inca and Inca civilization through a combination of modern compositions inspired by the land and its people and traditional songs and dances collected during the ensembles' travels throughout the Andes.
