This is the "serious" side of the Irish Rovers, as it were. Of course, serious is a relative term, considering the irresistible cheerfulness found in these 15 lilts. But, where 1999's The Best of the Irish Rovers focused on their best-known novelties (like "The Unicorn") and drinking songs from their 1968-1971 Decca tenure, this 2000 collection spotlights their political, historical, and more traditional Irish songs. Even when the themes are sober--postfamine emigration, social rebellion, unrest, and protest--the Rovers turn them into musical celebrations of perseverance, integrity, and triumph in the face of adversity. Add to these topical songs a mix of lively dance numbers and light-hearted courting songs, and you have a clear look at the "other side" of the Rovers, one thoroughly steeped in their musical and cultural history. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Rovers show their heritage.......2003-08-29
The set begins with an instrumental, King of the faeries, but is followed by a selection of Irish songs that includes wonderful ballads and story songs as well as upbeat, fun songs.
An interesting aspect of this collection is the sequence of four songs about the Irish people that moved to America because of the potato famine - Shamrock shore, Banks of Newfoundland, Shores of America and Lament for the Molly Maguires.
A glance at the track listing will show that this is not a collection of famous Irish songs - you won't find Danny boy here - but those songs can be found elsewhere. For those who want some Irish music beyond the obvious, this is an excellent collection.

A excellent companion piece to 1999's "Best of" release.......2000-03-21
My only complaint, and you can't hold this against the Rovers themselves, is that MCA is being a bit stingy with the material. There are 15 tracks here, but with many lasting just over 2 minutes the total running time is just over 35 minutes. If MCA really wanted to provide good value they could have utilized the full playing time of the digital format and added almost all these songs to last year's "Best of...". Now THAT would have been a bargain. Or at least added some more numbers like "Goodnight Irene", "Donald Where's Your Trousers", "Farewell to Nova Scotia", "Minstrel of Cranberry Lane", "Wind That Shakes the Corn", and "Coulter's Candy". But maybe they're saving those for next year's release?

Legendary selections by a legendary voice.......2004-03-24
McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

Fiona Ritchie, the host of National Public Radio's popular Celtic music show The Thistle & Shamrock, says she chose tunes for Christmas Ceilidh that reminded her of the village holiday socials she attended as a child. She must have lived in a remarkably cosmopolitan part of Scotland because along with the assortment of dance tunes and songs played by musicians like Manus McGuire, Lunasa, and Altan, the selections include "Maneo da Ulla/Foliada de Parenda" by the Spanish group Milladoiro and "Ceilidh Funk," a synth-based dance tune by the Scottish accordion player Phil Cunningham. And for a CD that prominently features the word Christmas in its title, there is almost no holiday music here at all, except for "I Saw Three Ships," a guitar solo by English guitarist John Renbourn, and the Tannahill Weavers' version of "Auld Lang Syne." Ritchie does include a nice essay about a typical Christmas ceilidh and a Dundee cake recipe in the liner notes, but overall this is one of the very few holiday CDs you can play year round. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
Marvellous!.......2005-01-15
You won't find anything here to disappoint you, but much to put you in the mood for trimming the tree, wrapping gifts, and of course for baking those yummy Christmas goodies for family and friends. In fact, included is a recipe for Mrs. Walkinshaw's Dundee Cake! I'll be trying this one out next week!
With 17 different tracks and artists I could be easily driven to distraction trying to figure out which three to share with you. The entire disc is that good! So I went with one which has some familiar history, and then one of the two traditional Christmas pieces which are recognizable world-wide. And I had to choose the one which stood out above all others for the final pick. So without further ado - here we go!
Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny give us a delightful track entitled At It Again. It is a humorous tale, believe me, and nobody could deliver it like this talented artist, once the renowned vocalist for Silly Wizard. And when you join this incredible voice with the Uillean pipes, well, you have the beginnings of something compelling and passion filled! This track will bring a smile to your heart and a laugh to your lips!
John Renbourn provides a seasonal staple with I Saw Three Ships. Johnís a very gifted guitarist, and shows his stuff with this piece, embellishing the chorus with extra notes and picking the melody out quite clearly. I could sit and listen to him play for hours, but all too soon the piece is over.
The Moving Cloud by Kips Bay is the piece which leapt out and stayed in my mind with each and every listen. It is taken from a live performance, and the disc Into the Light. This group is incredibly unique, well gifted, and very diverse in its background! Front man Pat Kilbride is amazing on the guitar, as is button accordionist John Whelan. Steve Missal once played in Ted Nugent's band, and was also Billy Idol's drummer. Richard Lindsey is a stellar world beat bassist, and Kenny Landrum is a keyboardist with flying fingers! I love reels, but this one is supercharged!
This is a spectacular taste of Celtic talent and will add much to your festive spirit! From Altan to Wolfstone, you'll find it here, as well as the included tale of a village Ceilidh. Treat yourself this Christmas; you'll be glad you did!

Outstanding album.......2000-11-17
Chris Rea only played five songs. Only one of them appears on this album - the excellent 'Stainsby Girls'. But having heard the concert, I bought this album as soon as it was released, and was not dissapointed at all. In vinyl terms, side one is stronger than side two, but there really isn't a bad track here. I would describe this as a rather melancholy album - lyrically Chris spends a lot of time lamenting the past, but the album is musically excellent. Many years on, I still regard the opening track, 'Steel River' as one of my all time favourite pieces of music. This track has it all - great lyrics, slide guitar, and a wondreful jazzy horn section. Chris Rea's love song about a way of life now gone forever remains a classic.
Why should I spend my time reviewing a rather obscure album from an artist whose later work was more commercially successful? Simple. This album is a classic. Buy it.
