The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

5 out of 5 stars Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

5 out of 5 stars How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16

Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hear the master early in his career, in 3 different settings.......2007-06-29

Sixteen tracks captured here span 1954-56 with Urbie's trombone featured in three different ensembles. His clarity, confidence, and technical prowess are on full display, and he's accompanied by great players like guitarist Jimmy Raney, pianist Dave McKenna, drummers Kenny Clarke and Joe Morello, and saxophonists Al Cohn, Frank Wess, and Med Flory.
One of the things Urbie is famous for is his interpretation of ballads, and his renditions of "You Are Too Beautiful," "It's Too Late Now," and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" are superb. For something livelier, demonstrating how Urbie taught other trombonists how fast the instrument was capable of moving, there's "Thou Swell," and "Dirty Dan." "One for Dee" captures the essence of 1950s small group jazz. Among the standards featured here are a swinging version of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland" (with some nice flute work by Frank Wess), and Urbie's rare switch to valve trombone for "Frankie and Johnny."
There are two additional tracks at the end of this collection that feature some nice solo piano from Dave McKenna, included to complete the set of recordings done at these sessions. Overall, a very enjoyable 72 minutes of music and a must for Urbie fans.
Note: The 2007 CD release "All About Urbie Green" duplicates 11 of the tracks on this CD, including nine of the Jimmy Raney collaborations and the two Dave McKenna piano solo tracks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars May be High Point of English Song.......2007-06-04

Whenever I listen to any renditions of English art songs, going from Elizabethan times to the modern, as by Percy Grainger, I always dispair at how uninteresting they are when compared to the great German, French, and Italian art song repetoires. It seems as if the English can never quite wrest their genre from its folk roots and become a 'classic' music realization. I cringe at the Shakspearean 'hey nonny nonnies' and the 19th century compositions, none of which are as good even as Stephen Foster at his best.

But here is Purcell, and I believe I've found an author of English song I can really enjoy. To be sure, he has not entirely kicked the straw from all of the lyrics, but out of this 74 minutes of performance, I can easily listen to it many times over. And, as it stands at the moment, the prices for these CD's are a real bargain, if you like English song.
