Well, I am definitely new to this reviewing thing. But, since nobody has reviewed this cd yet, I felt that it is my duty to do so!! The Rough Guide Series is an excellent guide to discovering new world music. I've never been to Louisiana, but have always dreamed of going there! This cd is one of the reasons why. Look at the rich music heritage that comes from this state. It is the birthplace of Cajun, Zydeco, Blue, Jazz, Gospel, and R&B. This cd includes all of these genres of music. This is not just music of New Orleans, but other cities in the state. Americans out there, this is a great introduction to what comes from this country!! This cd includes the very famous songs, "Iko Iko" and "You Are My Sunshine." The famous Buckwheat Zydeco and Dr. John are featured as well as many names that may be new to you. Learn a little about the music of this Southern state.

Album Description

Cajun music - from the prairies and bayous of south Louisiana - has a distinctive sound full of fiddles, guitars, boisterous accordion playing and songs of heartbreak and love (sung in French). The forced relocation of many Acadians or `Cajuns', from what is now Nova Scotia to Louisiana in the eighteenth century, led to the development of a rich and unique musical genre combining French, Celtic, Spanish, Native American and African music. From the parties and dancehalls of the Louisiana prairies to the waltz and two-step rhythms of Cajun music, The Rough Guide To Cajun Dance represents some of the finest and most innovative artists of the genre.

Here's a vibrant album that grabs you from the beginning and never lets go. For devotees of Cajun music, this rough guide will please as it includes a lot of leading exponents. As an introductory album, it's just right too - all of the various dances are here, and with a generous seventeen tracks there's an hour of foot-tapping enjoyment.

Cajun music comes from Louisiana USA, having been brought in by French Acadians from Nova Scotia who, when expelled there by the British in the 18th century, went south to settle in bayou country. Influences have been many including French, Spanish, Creole and Texan Swing. The music has an off beat that requires a specialised style of dancing somewhat akin to 50s rock and roll, and not easy to learn. To a novice the dance floor will appear to be full of people coping beautifully with a limp. Whether slow or fast, it is highly rhythmic, with vocals, fiddle and accordion up front, generally accompanied by guitars, bass and percussion.

The quality of recordings here, given that some tracks are a few years old, varies but is generally very good, while the playing is mostly excellent too. There's Michael Doucet's band Beausoleil, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, Balfa Toujours, Bruce Daigrepont, Dewey Balfa, Marc Savoy, D.L. Menard, Zachary Richard (a real hoot) and lots of others - a very impressive line-up. Many tracks are infused with an authentic backwoods feel. Informative notes, photos and album references are included.

I would have chosen other Bruce Daigrepont and Beausoleil tracks but you can't have everything when it comes to compilations. I did however make some great discoveries, and really there's never a dull moment. Enjoy.

Zydeco is the rollicking accordion-led dance music of Louisiana's Creole culture. It was invented by people of color whose ancestry included freed slaves and groups with whom they intermarried. It not to be confused with the European-derived Cajun style created by descendants of French settlers from Nova Scotia. Zydeco, while as infectiously melodic, is rhythmically harder-edged than Cajun music and incorporates R&B, soul and hip-hop. While popular lore places it in New Orleans, the groove actually developed in the countryside, where groups of Francophone musicians formed combos fronted by squeezeboxes and frottiors, a metal washboard peculiar to Zydeco which was adapted into a vest in the interest of efficiency. Modern bands commonly include electric guitars, bass and keyboards. This set showcases some of the genre's indelible hits, from Rockin' Sidney's playfully belligerent My Toot Toot, to Clifton Chenier's Calinda, to Beau Joque's virile take on John Lee Hooker's Voodoo Chile. --Christina Roden

    Album Description

Zydeco is the driving accordion-led dance music of the Louisiana Creoles. Originally of French origin, it has been heavily influenced by American rhythm and blues, soul and, in recent years, rap and hip-hop. Zydeco is distinct from its local cousin Cajun, and continues to flourish in the rural southwest Louisiana prairie towns. Featuring zydeco legends such as Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco, The Rough Guide To Zydeco presents some of the best Louisianan music, filled with the sounds of the accordion and the frottoir, a percussion instrument with an unmistakable rasp.
