A Terrific 2-CD Sampler from Naïve.......2006-04-02

This two CD sampler is a terrific way to become familiar with some of the CDs available on the wonderful French label Naïve. And the idea for the sampler is that it contains primarily music that could generally be considered melancholy or restful or soothing, depending on your take on the individual works presented here. Some of these excerpts are old friends as I am fond of much of the Naive catalog which includes recordings by the fabulous French a cappella Accentus Choir; the amazing pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard; the American pianist long resident in France, Noël Lee; Rinaldo Alessandrini's baroque group, Concerto Italiano as well as Christophe Rousset's Les Talens Lyriques; cellist Anne Gastinel; impressive singers like soprano Sandrine Piau, tenor Martyn Hill, contralto Sara Mingardo, Spanish soprano Maria Bayo, counter-tenor Derek Lee Ragin, and others. And even though his excerpt (Chopin's Prelude, Op. 28, No. 4) is short, the transcendent playing of pianist Grigory Sokolov, surely one of the world's greatest pianists, is worth the price of this budget release all by itself.

Another highlight, familiar to me from its original release on a full CD of transcriptions sung by Accentus, is Gerard Passon's choral arrangement of the Adagietto from Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Even you Mahler fans who are purists will be impressed with this lovely performance. As well Accentus performs Barber's choral arrangement of his 'Adagio for Strings' which uses the words of the 'Agnus Dei.' Sumptuously, movingly sung here.

I was surprised that I enjoyed a piece composed by Stephane Grappelli, the jazz violinist (a genre I generally abhor). It was composed for a movie score and is entirely winning as played by violinist Laurent Korcia and pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. Another 'arrangement' that I was unfamiliar with was Mendelssohn's reworking of the marvelous contralto aria from the St. Matthew Passion, 'Erbarme dich.' I frankly cannot hear how it differs from the original (and as I've just moved and all my CDs and scores are still in unopened boxes) I could not make a direct comparison. Soprano Angela Kazimierczuk sings like an angel in this beloved aria.

The booklet notes, translated from the French, are unfortunately the typical pseudo-philosophic twaddle so familiar from French liner notes. My advice would be to ignore them. But don't let my opinion of the notes deter you from obtaining this delightful issue.

Whiteness irreverence!.......2006-02-13

Among the notable group of the Six, it would seem two names have resisted the impetuous acid test of the time: Erik Satie and Francis Poulenc.

Melodically, Francis Poulenc is an heir of Erik Satie, but disliked abstractionism and philosophy. He rather preferred sensuality and sentimentality. He was a typical product of the French culture, one of the most singular figures of the famous Six (Germaine Taileferre, Erik Satie, Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric and Louis Durey)

He opposed himself clearly to classic form dissolution inside the impressionist sonorous taste and on the other hand, refused the tragic heroism. Gifted with an instinctive personality, was a fervent lover of the structural clarity and the melancholic mood, kindly ironic without purist whimsicalness.

His music is strongly loaded of whiteness and careful expressive phrasing. Gabriel Tachino shows us why he was one of the prominent pianists of his generation.

Go for this album without dilation.

Accomplished but where's the poetry?.......2005-09-10

This is a decent, if not inspired, collection of some of Poulenc's wonderful music for solo piano. There has always been the question of the use of "rubato" in Poulenc and I recall reading somewhere that Poulenc forbade it entirely. If that's true, than Tacchino is spot-on in his performances. But I missed the poetry that Artur Rubenstein brought to the wonderful 2nd Intermezzo in Db, especially the cadence of wonderful chords at the end. The tempos in this recording seem so straighforward as to sound rushed and workmanlike at times. The dazzling Presto in Bb (written for Horowitz) is played brilliantly here and overall this is a good basic introduction to this important collection of 20th Century piano music by one of its masters. One can only imagine in despair what treasures might have come from Poulenc's pen had he not died at age 63.

POULENC MOST PLEASING.......2005-09-02

This 2005 EMI Encore retread of multihued Poulenc piano music is a joy. Culled from recordings made by Tacchino as early as 1966 (and through the 80s), the near ideal compilation is a melodious, evocative, whimsical, vibrant homage to composer and performer alike, and, as such, succeeds marvelously. Tacchino's approach to these assorted works seems just right; his judgment, innate sensibility, insight and expressively open manner are all seductively spontaneous-sounding; and his charm, wit and eloquence are undeniably engaging. In his hands, there is timelessness about this music, an ambience, distinctly present, imminently satisfying. Production values, as well, merit an appreciative nod for succeeding not only in deliberately programming tracks as contrasted elements of Poulenc's varied emotional palette, but in also carefully monitoring the character and context of the sound and adding, thereby, those memorable gradations of tone and nuance, both acerbic and gentle, that color the music so characteristically.

Beautiful music, sensitively played.......2004-01-15

There are some terrific pieces of music in this collection. We were privileged to hear M. Cazal play in a relatively small theatre in Penrith [outer Sydney suburb], soon after the 1992 Sydney International Piano Competition, in which he won the People's Prize. I don't recall him playing any Poulenc back then, but we were enthralled by his performance.

Maybe Pascal Roge has the edge here, but we thoroughly enjoy this CD and the first CD in the set of 3.

We especially like his performance of the Suite Francaise and the Three Perpetual Movements.

I would be surprised if you do not also enjoy listening to these recordings.

Completely inappropriate style.......2003-10-20

I bought this CD hoping to learn more about Poulenc's piano music, since I am most familiar with the vocal works and chamber music. As it turns out, M. Cazal has no affinity for Poulenc's style, and I cannot listen to this disc for too long before I start to feel assaulted! Every attack is aggressive, there is no time for the music to breathe, some of the loud parts sound actually violent, and the phrasing can be so incredibly square that one gets the impression that the pianist actually resents Poulenc. Where is the humor, the finesse, the gentleness, the genuine passion, the poignancy? Truly disappointing.

Fabulous music expressively done.......2000-01-21

Poulenc's marvellously light touch in composition is (generally) equalled by the expressive playing on this CD. Track 9 is absolutely outstanding; I have repeated it as many as 6 times in a row. Some of the more marcato pieces are a trifle overdone, but this is fabulous music well played.

Music for bandoneon and viola da gamba?.......2005-04-07

I love work that hops genres and times. These beautiful, seductive pieces by Daniel Brel are enchanting and addictive. I picked the CD up on impulse and have been listening to it obsessively ever since. The bandoneon is an instrument most often associated with tango, and Brel's music indeed has some of the same flavors and moods of Astor Piazzola's. But the addition of Poéme Harmonique, a consort of viols, adds a gorgeous, vibrato-free string tone that matches the bandoneon surprisingly well. These pieces are moody and introspective, but also completely accessible, and lushly tonal. I suspect that you'll find this recording as compelling as I do. Another beautifully packaged and recorded entry from Alpha.
