I can't go to sleep without listening to this album! It's magical!

5 out of 5 stars Stirs the soul.......2002-02-02

There's something about Celtic music that really stirs my soul. My small, select collection of Celtic music includes Maireid Sullivan's DANCER and her FOR LOVE'S CARESS albums, and they move me closer to nature and spirit when I listen to them. The rich spiritual heritage of the Celtic people comes through clearly in the magical, lilting passages of Maireid's songs. While I've never met her nor heard her perform live, just hearing the music from a Maireid Sullivan CD I get an image of a young woman astride a horse, dressed in chain mail, and bearing a sturdy leather shield. There's something noble and pure in her music that, for me, goes beyond rational explanation.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album.......2001-01-12

Maireid transforms her music into a joyous musical adventure which speaks simultaneously of Ireland's past, it's hopes in the new millennium . She not only reinterprets traditional pieces in an extraordinary manner, but forges ahead with original material that defines the future of the genre. Unlike many other Celtic artists, Mairéid and her band create music which is totally void of well worn clichés, and instead presents a totally invigorating and inspiring musical environment.

"Singer/Songwriter Maireid Sullivan spreads her light to the world through the medium of Celtic Music. In her first album, Dancer , she blends a combination of traditional and original tunes in a seamless flow....The lyrics are infused with a Celtic spirit and the universal philosophies of love and freedom. At a time of re-emerging Celtic culture, we are reminded that "the roots of history and memory are buried deep in song." She sings with a voice filled with passion, mystery and wisdom. She sings of creating a better world, shaping our tomorrow. Reaching for the music of the spheres, with nature as an anchor, she reminds us that life is a dance and we are the dancer."

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2002-08-29

"You express the intent of the songs ... with depth and great feeling. I really like the way you have melded the traditional 'old songs' and the new visions of your own. A true Celtic process which has allowed them as a people to survive until now - they are a very adaptive culture and keep one foot in the future and one in the past while visiting the otherworld on occasion. The music of both old and new is well blended to create a whole that is a continuum as well as 'soul-scape'. ...the overall effect is calming, giving a warm peaceful, gentle, and refreshing feel. It would be hard to pick one 'most favorite' song, but if I had to choose, I think it would be "Recurring Dream". I have similar dreams about my childhood, but also about places I've never been yet know I have lived in lifetimes ago. "I don't want to hide" is another that I can personally relate to. And I love the way you've done "The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry" and "Annie Laurie". It is hard to separate the whole, and I hate doing that, as cubbyholes with separated, estranged wholeness are a great part of the problem with our world and our souls today.

Plus, we all need the refuge of peace and plenty for our heart's rest in "Danu's Land" where: '...Sweet as the voice of angels....Listen for their keening call/ In your heart you will hear their song/ Hear your own voice, see your own dream/ 'Come to me' they sing in melodious strain/ Live forever deep in Danu's dream...'

...a conscientious perspective of how Celtic music, thus culture, is alive today yet retains very strong flavors and convictions from the past. The underlying effects of the music provides a calming, warm feel. Pob fendithion Brigid i chi cariad. (All blessings of Brigid be yours love.)"

I did not like this one at all. It sounded mushy and new-agey. I can't even see how it could be called Celtic. Maybe i'm just partial to a more traditional folk sound, but if you like something that is real contemporary and don't care if it sounds like celtic music, you might like it.

Mairéid and her band create music which is totally void of well worn clichés, and instead presents a totally invigorating and inspiring musical environment. The music evokes a sense of immediacy for the listener. It creates a magical experience in a compelling atmosphere. On this new album, Mairéid's soaring voice interprets each song with a gentle spirit and delicate touch that reveals her visionary realm of mystery and enchanting beauty. This is particularly evident on songs like Danu's Land, and Anam Cara. As a personal soundtrack to a spiritual pilgrimage, Mairéid sets her poetry to music in a stunning creative musical statement. "For Love's Caress" will stir your soul and let your spirit take flight with it's exquisite vocals and alluring musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Sophistication.......1998-09-22

People who loved Dancer will be surprised at the departure in style from Maireid Sullivan's earlier CD. After hearing it more than once, you'll find that this album reaches deeper and is much more sophisticated. For Love's Caress is warm inviting and soulful, just a delight to listen to. As usual, Maireid reaches very deep to produce a superb example of musical expression. If you are not a fan of Celtic music, this CD may just change your mind . Although it is rooted in Celtic music, Maireid Sullivan transcends any such categorization, bringing her own unique contribution to the world of music.

Never Drift Apart Songs of joy, struggle, and hope By Mairéid Sullivan

Never Drift Apart, the third solo recording and independent release by Irish-born traditional and contemporary singer, poet, and author, Mairéid Sullivan, is an imaginative musical journey through soulful ballads, soaring slow airs and mesmerizing dance rhythms - songs of joy, struggle and hope. As Mairéid notes: "Our vision for these songs is to create a comforting and energizing canopy of sound for the listener, recreating the experience my mother created for me when she sang me to sleep as a child. Each song is a world unto itself: songs of joy, struggle and hope. I grew up in the Irish countryside but I feel that I am a part of every place I have been around the world. My home is everywhere. I wish to remind everyone that music helps us thrive in the chaos of the world."

Mairéid Sullivan (Lyrebird Media)
****
Irish songstress and Celtic chronicler Mairéid Sullivan is back after seven years overseas. Possessing a rich, pure voice and a poet's vision, she has distilled her experiences into an exceptional new CD. Sullivan knows few musical boundaries and the genres on this locally produced record range from contemporary to traditional, from folk and pop to ambient new-age textures (provided by Sullivan's partner, accomplished American guitarist, Ben Kettlewell). Other key contributors include violinist Matthew Arnold, bassist Joe Creighton, and percussionist Peter Neville.

Sullivan's music soothes and uplifts, particularly the opening title track. Her haunting cover of Ry Cooder's classic Across the Borderline, Tommy Makem's beautiful The Curlew Song and a gorgeous rendition of Eric Clapton's River of Tears are standouts.

Never Drift Apart is available at ABC shops and good record stores or online at www.maireid.com

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album.......2003-04-27

Okay. I admit I am a huge Maireid Sullivan fan. However, having said that, fans expect that sooner or later the music is going to fade. I usually find that artists I favor have one or two bad cd's in which I wish I'd never spent my money! However, I'm happy to say that I've yet to find ONE bad cd by Maireid Sullivan. I'm so happy that she included "All About Love" on this cd as it hs quickly become one of my favorite songs. I've seen her live 3 times and she just gets better each time. This cd only further proves that Maireid has staying power! You won't be wasting your money! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Music that slows me down........2003-04-21

As an American child of the 60's my idea of new music is usually a remastered CD of an old Neil Young or Eric Clapton album. Something really new often has to be dropped in my lap.

Such was the case of Maireid Sullivan's "Never Drift Apart." It was a gift from a friend --- and now it will be a gift TO my friends. What a breath of fresh air! I pop this one on at the end of the day to guide me in my transition from work to rest. My wife plays it first thing in the morning to help "start the day calmly." I guess you could say that we use Ms. Sullivan's beautiful music and sweet voice medicinally. To follow this metaphor to its logical conclusion: medicine does not have to taste bad to be good. This medicine, in fact, tastes great!

If you think it is a good idea to take a deep breath now and then, but sometimes don't schedule enough time for breathing, get this CD.

And just to prove that my taste has not changed all that much, there is even a song written by Eric Clapton included in this beautiful collection.

5 out of 5 stars A voice that puts goosebumps up your spine..............2003-04-19

Close your eyes and allow the oft otherworldly voice of Maireid Sullivan to wash over you and penetrate your being. As in her earlier albums, these selections will bring you back to replay this one again and again. Some of these songs strum such an emotional chord in the listener that you find her voice puts goosebumps up your spine.

Whether it be traditional Celtic music or contemporary ballads, the entrancing blend of words and music will soothe the soul and enlighten the heart. These are musical adventures to be relished and repeated!

5 out of 5 stars Maireid is Enchanting, Angelic, Spellbinding!!.......2003-04-18

Maireid is the winner of Creatrix Studio's 2003 New Millennium Award, for her latest recording Never Drift Apart. She is a visionary musician, whose evocative music transports you beyond time and space. Her crystalline voice is always melodious and often angelic and otherworldly, and it will envelop you in spells of enchantment.
.
Her songs have a strong Celtic flavor with melodies that will soothe your spirits and calm your frailed nerves. Listening to Maireid is like sailing across pristine water on a crystal-clear day. Don't miss this magnificent recording--it's a beauty.

    Album Description

The Australian lyrebird is unique. Though shy and elusive, this magnificent creature who mimics the cries of other songbirds, has been depicted in rock engravings and drawings by indigenous artists for thousands of years.

Inspired by the mimicry of the rare Australian songbird, musician and dancer Matthew Doyle sings the lyrebird in the only known recording of a song in the Tharawal language. He mimics the bird's own call using both voice and didjeridu to celebrate the survival and renewal of the lyrebird.

The album opens with New Beginning with the didjeridu exploring the theme of creation, followed by Mouth Music, in which Matthew vocalizes as if he were performing a traditional dance. Mimicry, a feature of the lyrebird's sublimity is continued in Tongue Talk.

In the song Wiridjirbin: The First Lyrebird, Matthew sings the lyrebird in the only known recording of a song in the Tharawal language. It represents a significant moment in both the cultural and linguistic history of New South Wales. Composed by Matthew, he mimics the bird's own call using both voice and didjeridu to celebrate the survival and renewal of the lyrebird. This song is a reconstruction of fragments of a language, no longer spoken, and describes how the first lyrebird was created.

Cave Drawings refers to drawings of lyrebirds close to Sydney. Didjeri-duo begins with an excerpt of a recording made on a misty, damp morning in rainforest country in the Blue Mountains (100 kms west of Sydney), an ideal time and place to hear the lyrebird. The accompanying didjeridu, played by Michael Atherton, was made by Matthew.

Courtship Dance is about the mating ritual and the rhythm of renewal. In Song Bird, Matthew mimics a lyrebird mimicking other birds. In the last track Mungari (which means singing) Matthew renders a technically virtuosic display of lyrebird, cockatoo, brolga, kookaburra, boobook and emu calls.

This recording is dedicated to the memory of Aboriginal artists Malcolm Smith, and Philip Lanley who was one of Matthew's teachers.
