Beautiful Music.......2007-01-19
This is a terrific CD full of warm and romantic music. It's perfect to listen to or to have as background music.
Spell-binding; breathtaking; most incredible CD ever.......2001-12-02
As a fan of celtic music, I sincerely believe that Heart of the Celts is most astonishing CD I've ever heard. I've often said, that this is the music I'd like to hear as I leave this world!!! I've shared this CD with many friends, who share my love of this CD. Unparralled!
Spellbinding, moving and magical.......1999-12-10
Karen Matheson and Connie Dover's voices are magnificent. If you enjoy Celtic music, this CD is a must. Love songs are even more enchanting when you can't understand the words (some songs are in English, though)! The music really draws you in. I find myself playing it over and over. Came upon it at a 1/2 price book store by accident, what a find!
Narada has done it again!
A family favorite: Timeless, Interesting, Soothing.......1998-12-13
Love every song and listen to the CD frequently. My entire family--from grandpa to children--enjoys the music. When I first played it, we all stopped, sat down by the fire, and just listened.

Not the best........2005-03-02
I bought this CD with high hopes. I absolutely loved the first one, the one recorded live. This one was a disappointment though. The guys songs are good and their voices are in good form but it was missing something...feeling, I guess. The live concert version can make me cry and laugh it's so sung with feeling, but this is just singing. I just felt it lacked feeling. I guess that's why I was disappointed with it.
What a magnificent Heritage.......2005-01-22
I highly recommend this album to all fans of Irish music. This is the last album with Ronan as a memember and it is one of their best. Ronan's "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen" is wonderful, so too is Finbarr's "South of the Border". The theme from the Titanic "My Heart Will Go On" is the best version since Celine Dione's. My favorite track is Anthony's "The West's Awake" . One point to note is that this group is one of the few out there who can perform live with an equally good recorded sound. Having listened to them at Meadowbrook NH the night of Ronan's farewell I can assure you that live or recorded they have a fantastic sound. I highly recommend this CD to all fans of Irish music.

A Review .......2004-10-30
I have never really been a fan of Traditional Irish Music and had never even HEARD of the Irish Tenors....That is until a friend of mine introduced me to the recording of "Live In Belfast" Instantly, I was hooked. I have become addicted to a lot of these songs. Especially the goofier ones they sing. like "Phil the Fluther" and "Courtin in the Kitchen" When Heritage was released I was estatic....As I had loved all the songs they had released before. Even though they recycled some of their songs. I loved the way they re recorded "Red Is The Rose" with Finbar in place of John and also "Fields Of Athenry" I Found this version to be better than the other one. I found it really bizare that they would sing "My Heart Will Go On" as that is not an Irish Song...Ireland was where the Titanic sank. but still. I really enjoyed listening to it. "South of the Boarder" and "Golden Jubilee" along with "Little Brigid Flynn" were quite entertainingly cute. I really enjoyed Anthony's "The West's Awake" and "The Parting Glass" and "The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls" I would, too also love to see Anthony put out a solo album.
Heritage, The Irish Tenors.......2004-09-30
This is another delightful effort by Anthony, Finbar and Ronan.
My favorite songs were "Off to Philadephia" (Anthony) and "My Heart Will Go On" (Finbar). I didn't even mind the repetition of some songs heard on past CDs - but wondered about it, until I learned of the departure of Ronan Tynan. I am curious to see the kind of arrangements they have included on their new CD, due to come out later this year, which they made upon the return of John McDermott. John is a Canadian of Celtic descent, whose voice, though pleasant in a folksy way, does not seem to blend as well with Anthony and Finbar as did Ronan's trained vocals. I would be very pleased to see Anthony make a solo CD, including such ballads as (my all-time favorite) Bantry Bay and some of the wonderfully playful Irish ditties he sometimes performs at his solo concerts.
Tattered Tenors.......2004-08-20
When the Irish Tenors burst upon the public scene not too many years ago, they were heralded as a refreshing change in the sea of musical mediocrity. The original trio of McDermott, Kearns and Tynan thrilled us with their exuberance and vocal virtuosity and frankly, I miss that. (Please note: since I originally wrote this review the threesome has changed to McDermott, Kearns and Wright with Tynan having left the group).
As one of their latest efforts, "Heritage" is an "okay" album, but it certainly lacks the freshness and fun of the Irish Tenors' earlier efforts. Of course, there are notable exceptions such as Kearns' roguish "Off to Philadelphia", the sprightly "Golden Jubilee" and the beautiful "The West's Awake" solo by Kearns. Wright's "Little Brigid Flynn" is downright fun but his "South of the Border" is oddly out of place. With too many recycled songs and a little too little Anthony Kearns, I personally found "Heritage" to be the weakest effort in the generally stellar Irish Tenors' discography.

Generally regarded as, along with Mary Black, the finest Irish singer going, O'Connell got her start in Ireland's thriving acoustic music circuit, though she has never been a traditional vocalist. Her voice is neither showy nor subtle, but it exudes warmth, generosity, and quiet strength. She's an interpreter, not a writer, someone who looks with an eye for the poetic, and generally finds just the right songs: "Summerfly" is a Cheryl Wheeler classic, "Trouble in the Fields" is an early, tough Nanci Griffith narrative, and "Western Highway" sounds like classic Americana. --Roy Francis Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Modern, Mellow and Folksy.......2006-05-31
These are folksy type songs but they don't sound old or recycled. They have a fresh, modern sound to them without crossing the border into rock or pop or even country. Each of the songs on this album could conceivably fall into one of those other categories but they are more properly in their own. They are also quite enjoyable.
Maura has a lovely voice. It sometimes seems as if it has been electronically enhanced to compete with the very strong instrumentation but never sounds strained or overwhelmed. It is a nice mix.
Maura's Amazing Voice.......2006-05-19
My family and I just love Maura O'Connell. She has a voice like no other, a voice that just goes right to the heart of whatever music she is singing - ballad or "jig" or country or "standard" - she just sings it better than anyone. We have been to an Emmylou Harris concert and could neither hear nor understand one note or word - a total waste of time and money. In contrast, we went to a Maura O'Connell concert a few years ago where she sang in a large concert hall (University of Illinois, Krannert Center - one of the concert halls there) and she sang - without amplification - and you could hear her all over the hall, that pure beautiful voice. It can be so completely tender, yet simultaneously powerful and strong. I will never in life understand why America (and elsewhere) gives its hard-earned cash to the likes of Britney Spears or Madonna or Mariah Carey, et al when they could be paying Maura O'Connell for the pure and simple pleasure of hearing that voice. It is one of life's gifts. Buy this CD. Buy any and all of her CDs. Enrich her in return for how she enriches music. Her voice is a joy and a blessing to anyone who loves music.
Amazing Simply Amazing !!!.......2006-05-10
This album has to be one of the best albums of all time! Maura O'Connell has one of the most expressive and powerful voices that I have ever heard. She can be sweet and gentle when the need arises or powerful and strong. Her range is truly staggering and she has that unique ability to touch your soul. My favourite tracts are Cast a long Shadow and the Title Track Helpless Heart. I agree with the previous reviewer, you cannot put Maura and Mary Black in the same category - Maura is simply streets ahead!! Buy this album and enhance your life!
CAN'T STOP THE GIRL!!!!.......2004-02-23
Look, lets just lay it on the line here. Maura O'Connell is NOT...as described in the notational Amazon blurb...just one of the greatest IRISH singers around. You can take that restrictive little adjective qualifier out of the description and junk it. Maura O'Connell is one of the greatest SINGERS around. PERIOD.
"The Voice" can do virtually anything. Any genre (though I haven't heard her try opera yet), any tempo, any time, any place.
And when you HEAR "The Voice" you know it instantly to be hers...just as you do with Judith Durham of the old Seekers.Maura is Maura, and as soon as she starts up you know you can just settle back and expect a TREAT. "Red" ALWAYS delivers.
I Don't plan to go overlong with this review (if you want more yak from me about how good she is, go read the "Walls & Windows" review). Don't need to. This album is flat out WONDERFUL. It may well be her best. It has all the wonderful instrumentation you expect on an O'Connell CD, and all the heart and sublime vocal nuances. The songs on this thing are just fabulous from start to finish and I hesitate to name any titles at all as being "special". They ALL are. If pushed, I would have to say my biggest love affair here is with "Cast A Long Shadow" (but that's just me), though EVERYTHING else runs "dead-close second"!
If you have never heard Maura O'Connell before (what cave are YOU fresh out of?), then saddle up with THIS album, pardner. Right here. Right now. "Helpless Heart" is a real gem. Be warned, though. Once exposed to "Irish Red" you WILL absolutely and unequivocally become an O'Connell junkie and crave her music like a fish craves water.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!!!! Me, I'm about to DIE to hear her do
"Danny Boy"!!!!
A great voice with Bela Fleck backing her up.......2001-02-13
people, this is one of the best albums you will ever buy, western highway is the definitive road song, trouble in these fields is both and curse and a prayer. awesome songs by a lady with class and a voice that melts hearts and saves souls...maura oconnell is the best thing to come from ireland since guiness stout and she won't give you a hangover. thanks for the songs Maura.

Customer Reviews:
A Woman's Heart (Volume 2).......2005-02-04
The second A Woman's Heart cd is no less tear-provoking, gorgeous, and uplifting than the first. This album is possibly a little less soulful than volume one, but no less enrapturing and involving.
With sixteen beautiful Celtic songs sung by the same group from the first A Woman's Heart, this is not to be missed. It draws you in from the very beginning. The first time I heard this, I wasn't really listening and did not like it much, but the second time it tore my heart out. I couldn't list my favorites if I tried, because it would be all of them. This is one of those rare albums you turn on and just let go-there's nothing to skip over.
It's like a journey that will change your life. Just go down the path of this healing Celtic music-it really will soothe your soul.
Woman's Heart 2.......2003-02-05
I think this album rates up there with the first compilation released a decade ago. The stand out track is Poison Tree by Marcia Howard and Mary Black and it is clear to see why it was lifted as the first single. It is a fine collaboration by two outstanding singers and signifies the powerful forces at work within this album. If you only buy one c.d. this year make sure it's this one and if you have any change left over buy the single for your best friend. This is music as real as it gets.
Hard to improve on perfection.........2001-12-07
I purchased this CD after falling in love with the first Woman's Heart. That was and still is, one of my favorite CD's.
I purchased Woman's Heart 2 and I guess I was expecting it to be as great as the first one. There are some good tracts, but none that stood out that much,in my mind. I seldom play it. A good CD, but not a great one.
Roll on Woman's Heart 3!.......1999-02-02
If you liked the first one you'll equally love this. There's a bit more variety and all the songs grow on you very quicky. Still getting played regulary here in Belfast.
Just as fabulous as A Woman's Heart (1).......1998-09-26
This is a wonderful CD, very relaxing. I loved A Woman's Heart and this is just as great. A wonderful mix of artists, Dolores Keane is the best, as well as Frances Black and Maura O'Connell.

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12
Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.
This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.
If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.
Excellent Celtic Cd.......2006-12-30
A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!
Just lovely!.......2003-05-25
This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. Another great harp compilation CD is "Faces of the Harp" from Narada.
Amazing.......2001-08-30
I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!

The best harpestry CD!.......2001-07-23
One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

Serah has a beautiful voice!.......2004-02-24
if you are looking for unique music and a gorgeous voice akin to Clannad's Maire Brennan or Loreena McKennitt, Serah is the artist for you. the African drum rhythms will appeal to those who like a little fast and furious and the vocals will appeal to your softer sider. definitely check this album out.
My heart sings along!.......2000-07-16
This CD is a treasure! My heart, soul, and feet all respond to this amazing blend of sound and lyric! Gentle and strong......yet mystical and almost spiritual at times. Playful and happy, yet able to feel sadness also. "I'll find a song to wear with my dress!" That line says it all!

Serah sings like an angel, her voice floating over the wind........1999-10-26
Serah's voice is mesmarizing, as she combines English, French lyrics with African tones and rhythms. Each song is an invitation to revisit and enjoy the blend of sounds.
incredibly original, great cross-cultural music.......1998-06-14
Love this music. Serah has always written music with beautiful lyrics and melodies. The addition of the African vocals has added an element of rhythm and depth that makes this CD a standout. Nothing run-of-the-mill about it. Very upbeat. . . makes you want to sing.

Customer Reviews:
Nice easy to listen to Celtic album.......2005-08-02
A wonderful medley of easy to listen to Celtic music...good variation of artists. A good addition to my Celtic/Irish collection!!
Kilkelly.......2001-02-08
I agree completely with the reviewer who made comments about Kilkelly. It brings tears to my eyes and I don't know why, either. Phenomenal. The only other song I have ever heard that even approaches the sorrowful mastery is Sad Little Girl by Dan Schwartz. This CD is worth it even if Kilkelly were the only song on it. With so much more, it is a definite must. These truly are songs from the heart.
The most moving song I have heard (I'm over 60).......1999-11-07
I heard your song "Kilkelly" on WUNC (Chapel Hill) last Sunday. It brought tears to my eyes like no other, I know not why. Even the sample I found on your webpage has done it. I have got to buy the CD.
Close your eyes, you can smell the peat fire........1999-02-08
Mick Moloney takes you to Ireland, not only with his tours (which are wonderful) but with his music and stories and information (that you don't even realize he is teaching you because it's so fascinating). He touches your heart and soul with his music and love for his country.
