When they exploded out of the gates on their 2004 debut, Contraband, Velvet Revolver were met with as much diffidence as appreciation. After all, supergroups have tended to detonate as often as succeed, and with vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Duff McKagan, and guitarist Slash all vying to keep the lit match away from the fuse, the odds against this band ever seeing album #2 were even money at best. Surprise! Not only have Velvet Revolver survived three years with unreckless abandon, this album blows the doors off its predecessor. Save a pair of disinfected ballads ("The Last Fight," "Gravedancer"), Libertad is all about hand-grenade chords, drag-racing riffs, and circus-tent choruses. The ageless McKagan and Slash continually gun for the disorderliness of their former band (most notably on the punkish opener "Let It Roll" and its lewd brother "Spay"), while Weiland sounds--knock on wood--positively clean and like a voice of boisterous renewal on tracks like "Mary Mary," "She Builds Quick Machines," and the melt-in-your-mouth cover of ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head." Obviously egos have been checked at the studio door, as Velvet Revolver have already exceeded their anticipated existence. And now that existence goes back on the clock, trying to outshine a second album that's head-and-shoulders better than the first. --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
Great return from one of the best pure rock bands on the planet.......2007-07-19
Libertad is without question a huge breath of fresh air in the otherwise polluted musical atmosphere full of bland pop and mindless emo rock. This album is nothing but pure hard rock from start to finish. The guys in Velvet Revolver did a great job of putting a fine piece of work. The only negative i see with it is that it lacks the constant crunch of the first album. Still i love Libertad and highly recommend it not only to those who love real rock, but also to the younger music fans, who needs to be enlightened on what real rock is.
Favorite songs are Get Out The Door(Great cowbell action in it and should be released as one of the next singles), Mary Mary, Just Sixteen, and Spay.
great.......2007-07-19
as much as i would love to just shout 'go buy this album', i'll try and actually tell you about it. the first album was loud, fast and full of solos and swearing and was alltogether a great super group cd. libertad has less of that, but somehow it works. songs that would be slow on the first album make up the guts of this one, but there is still plenty of rock like quick machines, spay, get out the door, and let it roll. the 'quiet' songs, like last fight, gravedancer, and the cover of cant get it out of my head (which i couldn't get out of my head) fit perfectly with the album. i like to see talent in music, and my only dissapointment was that the best solo slash has is in quick machines, which i've heard on the radio for the past 3 or 4 weeks. i just wish they had added a song that would be a no brainer for fastest song on the cd. but don't get confused - if you're looking for a great rock album and love music, get libertad. if you're looking for something to blast out of the car's system - get contraband (if you haven't already). if you just found 25 dollars, go buy both
Becoming Velvet Revolver.......2007-07-18
I liked the first album becaused it was Guns with out Axel. I always had a hard time liking them because he was so horrible. I would never go see them because of his ranting on stage, bad behavior, late arrivals, tantrums etc. So VR solved the Axel problem and I could enjoy Slash with out guilt or pain.
This cd sounds like they are actually turning into a real band with their own sound. All that touring did something. I hope they stay together for a long time and keep producing great albums.
3.5 stars.......2007-07-18
After 3 whole listenings to this cd I think I'm ready to talk about it, this is really different from VR debut album, Contraband is really melodic and very very G 'n R sounding, this time they got rid of that sound, and I think for the first time creating their own sound, the cd rocks, but something is missing, good guitar riffs, good soloing by Mr. Slash, but no standout song, just as a whole is a good cd and nice to listen to it, maybe next release will be better.
4.5 stars - Band Finds its own sound. BUY this album.......2007-07-18
Libertad is a major step for VR. They sound like a band that has come into their own. The album has a consistent sound that is neither GNR nor STP. It's a slick, dance / pop / rock sound with amazing rhythm and killer guitar solos overlayed with the unique vocals of Scott Wieland.
I thought Contraband was kind of a hodge-podge with some great singles. This is a great ALBUM.

beautiful music.......2007-01-30
This is a brilliant album - Inti-Illimani, John WIlliams, Paco Peña? C'mon! This is music that will reward patient listeners. This is deeply soulful, social protest music. Non-Spanish speakers should try to track down the lyrics and find a way of translating them, to appreciate the meaning and the sentiment.
As for the reviewer who copies and pastes the same review for all his reviews of Inti-Illimani's discs... "...the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende..." - I don't think one line in a review makes it a political venue, but you have just made it into one with your few paragraphs praising Pinochet.
Let us learn to appreciate their great music without..........2005-12-30
It has been an enormous pleasure to listen to Inti Illimani for the past 20 years. Definitely great musicians and great recordings, to say the least. However the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende and call his deplorable and failed communist period in power exciting, and Pinochet's years "the frightening Pinochet years" (read reviews under The Best of Inti Illimani), can only come from the twisted mind of someone who still believes in 20th Century myths: the myth of Fidel Castro, the myth of Che Guevara, the myth of the proletariat, etc. Having survived 11 years in a communist country I know better, a lot better. All of us should by now. Unfortunately we do not. Look at Venezueza and now Bolivia, with the two puppets in power dancing to the music of Fidel Castro.
Frightening years for whom? For the communists and all members of the red tribe of disciples of Fidel Castro, of course. Today, to still call Pinochet a dictator and Fidel Castro "president" is beyond comprehension. Look at Chile today. Can anyone believe it could have become what it is now without eliminating Allende's regime and crushing the communists?
I give Inti Illimani an A for their music. Let us learn to appreciate their great music without praising their disastrous and failed political views. For that, they get capital F.
INTI'S MASTERWORK.......2005-11-13
I used to buy Inti's LPs when I was 12 and I was schooling in Italy.
It still remains one of my favourite musical groups of all time.
Fragments of a Dream is, simply put, their masterwork, the one where Horacio Salinas reaches the greatest heights of inspiration in a blend I would call, at times, "modern Latin American baroque".
It starts with a piece inspired by my fatherland's folk music, Sardegna, and ends with a dismantling-cum-reconstruction of the principle of the dance worthy of any great classical composer. Brilliant

tangos.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful cd for people who love tangos...Libertad Lamarque had her own unique style and she expressed her music in a manner full of emotion and from the heart!
A great artist.......2005-09-04
Libertad Lamarque will always be in the memory of those who have listened to her or seen her work as an actress. This album is a really golden collection of her "tango" singing. Once you listen to her, you'll play this CD over and over again.
Libertad Lamarque will be missed-her recordings will go on........2000-12-19
I've had Libertad Lamarque's album Tangos Imortales on vinyl since my mother gave it to me as a birthday present in 1975. In fact I live near the street where the now defunct record shop where mom bought it was! I was thrilled to hear this fine LP is available now on CD. To be honest, I didn't listen to the CD since I know all the songs by heart and it's in mono anyway. Did you know in the TV movie Evita Peron Rita Moreno's charcter was based on Libertad Lamarque? Her legendary battles with star-turned-politcian Eva Peron got her exiled to Mexico. Argetntina's loss is the world's gain. I especially liked the male vocalist on Cantando and Adios Muchachos later became the english language song I Get Ideas. A Media Luz is fun to listen but Plegaria is the most dramatic song on the album(as if the album needed a dramatic song) and it's not sampled on this website! Oh well! The lady died on Dec. 12 at aged 92 in Mexico City. Having worked for over 70 years she will be missed but her recordings will go on. Tangos Imortales is not to be missed by ANY music fans
a bright star from the past.......2000-08-29
This fabulous actress and singer is an Argentine treasure. She sings with such passion and sincerity, and her sparkling voice (even though these recordings are from many years ago) sounds crystal clear and full of life.
Her rendition of "Nostalgias" is wonderful, as is "La Cumparsita", and the spoken section of "Inspiración" will give you a glimpse of what a luminous presence she was on film. Though I confess, I don't normally appreciate the female voice, Libertad Lamarque holds a special place in my heart and in my CD collection.
Libertad Lamarque has a beautiful voice........1999-10-01
Libertad Lamarque has a beautiful voice that is full of emotion. When you listen to her sing you are taken to the "place" she is at. I and my mother enjoy her music very much and am looking forward to acquiring more of her music. Please offer more of her music. Thank you

Heavenly.......2001-05-10
Having never heard this woman sing I had only seen her name. With the plethora of female artists around it is hard to sort out the mediocre from the outstanding without breaking the bank. I was turned on to this artist recently by a good friend and have since listened to Tania sing incessantly. Perfect for those quite moments, this CD has accompanied me on my mornings hikes. By the time I reach the 1500 ft. elevation I am soaring well beyond the clouds on the wings of Tanias lovely voice. Since this is a collection of hits the arrangements are all very different but all outstanding. There are minimilist accompanyments but it works well because her voice is so lovely. At other times the songs have a jazzy flow to them, puntuated by sexy sax that further adds to her seductive voice. Often the songs have a Mexican flavor, complete with mariachi. At other times they bear testement to her own ethnicity with a Peruvian sound. Whatever the arrangement it is superably done, with lush accompanyments, including strings and harp, befitting an angelic voice for the ages. She reminds me of Lila Downs but much more sophisticated and polished. There is not a dog in the bunch, nothing but winners on this CD. This is one of those CD's that sounds better and better with each listening, as you become more familiar with the voice the message becomes clearer and clearer. It is hard to pick favorites but without doubt the four Jose Alfredo Jimenez penned songs are outstanding, particularly one of my all time faves "Cuando Sale La Luna." Her version gives me goosebumps, it is hauntingly beautiful. An interesting number is the Sting pop tune from a few years back entitled "Fragile"...........with it's repetitive phrasing "how fragile we are".... only this is in Spanish. It is beautiful just as so much of this CD is. I look forward to exploring more of this artists music but for starters this is an outstanding representation. This CD is guarateed to take you to heaven and back with Tania's beautiful voice.
magical.......2001-01-04
I first heard this amazing singer a few weeks ago on a "Mexico, Voz y Sentimiento" CD that had the exquisite "Cuando Sale la Luna" on it, and immediately bought this great compilation, which has 19 additional songs that are a joy to hear.
"Concierto para Una Voz", with a piano and strings accompaniment is a rare gem, as is the long (7:51 minutes) "Alfonsina y el Mar" sung to a harp solo. "Tres Palabras" is a fabulous duet with Miguel Bose, and her interpretation of "Gracias a la Vida" is a marvel...but in nearly 75 minutes of music, there isn't a dull moment on this CD.
I've never enjoyed listening to a female voice as much as Tania's, not only for the beauty of her sound, but also for the artistry of her style, and I can't conceive of anyone on the planet not being captured by the magic of it also. This is heavenly music for the whole world, whether you understand Spanish or not.
There is only a song/composer/time list on the insert, but the guys will like the cover photo...she looks like a sultry belle, but wait 'til you hear the loveliness of her voice.
Breathtaking!.......1999-12-02
Concierto Para Una Voz (a capella), Gracias a La Vida, and Alfonsina y El Mar alone make this CD a Tour-de-Force for anyone who likes superb chanteusses and their great performances.
A Peruvian gift, Miss Libertad enfuses her songs with a whole rainbow of subtle emotions.

After more than 30 albums, Afro-Peruvian singer Tania Libertad makes her U.S. debut with Costa Negra. Whereas fellow Afro-Peruvian Susana Baca remained in Peru researching Afro-Peruvian music and history, Libertad chose to move to Mexico several years ago. The change in surroundings gives her music a broader Latin flavor than Baca's, as she makes interesting connections between Peruvian, Mexican, Cuban, and Panamanian folk music, all tied through the musics' common African roots. Well supported by percussion (featuring an array of drums from Latin America and Africa) and great choral arrangements, Libertad's vibratoless mezzo-soprano voice is an impressive, commanding presence whenever she sings, rising to diva proportions on the album's romantic ballads. Libertad even holds her own in a duet with Cesaria Evora on the bolero "Historia De Un Amor," where the two voices intertwine with drum accompaniment for stunningly romantic results. An excellent introduction to this talented singer, Costa Negra should raise Libertad's profile in the States. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description
The gypsies in Spain are looked down upon as "suspicious foreigners", who travel in large families. They are perceived as entrepreneurs in thievery, con games, drug dealing and extorting money from tourists and elderly citizens. Like the African-American situation in this country, a disproportionate number of young adult gypsies are in prison or on probation. In fact, they are an enterprising people with strong family ties, extensive religious rituals and their own strict laws, dating back hundreds of years.
In a country internationally recognized for it's culture of flamenco song, music and dancing, the gypsies reign supreme. The various state provincial governments (juntas) in Spain, along with all the state accredited national flamenco clubs (penas), decided to select the very best inmate singers of flamenco in Spanish jails by running a national contest open to all incarcerated prisoners.
One hundred and fifty inmates, from many different jails, responded by sending in demo cassettes of their singing voices. Many jails were represented, including Malaga, Valencia, Madrid, Alomorca, Barcelona, Sevilla, Ocana, Cuenca and Jaen. Thirty finalists were selected and escorted from their provincial jails by the armed Spanish Guardia Civil to the prison of Cordoba for the final selection of the best singer. The contestants were backed by the foremost flamenco guitarists, clappers and shouters (jaleo) in the flamenco world. The ultimate reward - 5,000 pesetas and the reduction of the sentence being served.

Two Cries for Freedom (Dos Gritos de Libertad).......2001-10-30
Excellent example of cante jondo and pure, traditional Flamenco. Antonio "El Agujetas" has an interesting voice that really works in this style of Flamenco. Hard-core Flamenco.
A journey.......2000-04-01
An album with a meaningful background and a purposeful result. Buy this album. But don't stop here with your journey into the world of flamenco.

Libertad's career began when she was a tot of 5. Perhaps this explains why her voice so often sounds like that of an older woman, more knowing and worldly wise than her young, lovely face might lead one to expect. She now resides in Mexico but was born in Peru, and this album explores the latter country's persistently resurgent, richly percussive African heritage. Although more pop-flavored and not so rough-and-ready as some other interpretations, her arrangements make ample use of the African-derived call-and-response vocals, squeezeboxes and percussion. But her touch remains deeply personal. She adds a fugitive taste of honey to a workers' lament and divines the nascent bitterness curled at the heart of an erotic ballad; a whiff of addictive consolation rises from a rural potion seller's sales pitch. Brazilian composer/poet Chico Buarque's Funeral Del Labrador is a heartbreaking ode to humble lives whose ceaseless labor ends in anonymous futility. --Christina Roden

Good concept but misses.......2007-01-22
After being buried in a heap of discs that didn't make a good first impression I have tried listening to this disc again recently to see if it is I-Pod worthy. The bottom line is only a few of the songs are outstanding. I'm not sure why either because the songs are pleasant enough but they just don't grab you. The percussion and horns add a nice touch to compliment her voice but someting is missing; the problem is I'm not sure what. Maybe it is the melancholoy nature of the songs don't fit with her high end voice that contrasts with the dark deep background vocals? It is just a peculiar disc, beautiful in it's own way but not very accessible. This album requires patience and if you're like me you'll be hitting the fast forward button. Songs that make the I-Pod include "Samba Malato" which is a typical song that reflects the African heritage of some in Peru,"La Bruja" a traditional song that is uptempo and has catchy hooks punctuated by jazz piano and accordian,"Presos del Miedo" has Tania in a lower octave at times backed by nice percussion, "El Arullo" is a tasty salsa number with ethnic background voices chanting throughout and "Anda Mareado" is a soft yet rhythmic song that will have you swaying. I like some of Tania Libertad's other works, but in the end, this is a disc that has too many lapses and probably not for everyone.
Exceptional interpretation from a Peruvian Diva!.......2005-11-18
WOW, this woman ceases to amaze me. She interprets just about everything, from Rancheras, boleros, balads, trovas and classical numbers (similar to Diva, Rocio Jurado). This album contains african peruvian songs....superbly done! She owns everything she sings. One has to appreciate such a divine songstress!
