Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This lack of contrast and variety creates an otherworldly, disembodied atmosphere, despite several buildups of motion, dynamics, and intensity. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2006-01-12

This amazingly beautiful album to me is the soundtrack of Anatolia, of an era gone by when Turks, Greeks, Armenians and other ethnic groups shared their lives peacefully and harmoniously. Its sadness inevitably reminds me of millions who unnecessarily died on this soil in many wars fought in early twentieth century, of people forced to leave the only land the knew for unknown destinations and destinies, of the unimaginable hardships endured by its people. And more personally it takes me fom New York and puts me right next to my father's grave in a forgotten Anatolian village, 6000 miles away.

4 out of 5 stars an artistic triumph.......2005-12-28

Peaceful, meditative, sad, introspective, deceptively simple. Classical. Coming from a deep sense of inner peace, like all things from the Work, but NOT New Agey.

Mystical.

Mr Gurdjieff sang or hummed his songs and Thomas deHartmann "wrote them down and added harmony". Hard to tell where Mr. G stops and deHartmann starts, but we will never know. Mr G speaks of Objective Music and the vast majority pieces of subjective music. This is the former.

I must confess that many other peformances and arrangements of the music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann, the way it was "supposed to be played", left me cold. Most of the other renditions I heard were played by those Drunk with Orthodoxy, amaturish or just plain lacking in musical ability.

This version is a revelation!

I think G would approve of this.

I like this, I think that the arrangements for cello and piano instead of just piano, as written, is an artistic triumph. The cello played by Anja Lechner expresses the peace and meditative sadness inherent in the music, even if that wasn't the way it's usually played. Composers are often not the best intepreters of their music.

That having been said there are three part to this music, pieces by G/deH, Tsabropoulos and then more G/deH and when the pianist sticks his own works in the middle of Mr G's the quality of composition falls somewhat. His compositions are or similar mood and type to G/deH, but really don't have the same achieve the same heights of depth and soul. (Mr G would say they are not Objective Music, I guess.) Perfomances of all pieces are uniformly good.

I would hope this group will arrange more of Mr G's music in this format in the future.

Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Interpretations of Gurdjieff's Music.......2005-12-14

You may want to pass this one up if you enjoy Gurdjieff's music as he intended it to be. To me these seem like rambling, flimsy interpretations of strong, articulate works (if you have heard any of the Kremski recordings, you know).

The arrangements do not seem to have captured the spirit of Gurdjieff's music very well. If someone did with Beethoven what has been done with Gurdjieff's music here, I don't think it would be taken seriously.

If you are interested in a new "twist" on Gurdjieff's music, then you may enjoy this. If you enjoy Gurdjieff's music closer to the way which he composed it, then you will want to look for a different recording.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Subjectivity Encounters An Objective Music.......2005-03-19

Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff's music was first given a broad public exposure with Keith Jarrett's recording "Sacred Hymns" in 1980. The public was perhaps already partly prepared for this music in 1979, due to the release of director Peter Brook's beautiful film on the life of G.I. Gurdjieff, "Meetings with Remarkable Men". The closing sequences of "Meetings with Remarkable Men" show the middle-aged Gurdjieff being taught about deep ontological truths through live performances of both music and dance.

In the 1920's, at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, Gurdjieff continued this work by collaborating with Thomas de Hartmann on creating an "objective music". A music that "would work upon all listeners equally, focusing their mental life and bringing them to a new relationship with the living universe". It is probably Keith Jarrett, who has worked closely with the Gurdjieff Societies of both London and New York, that has produced the most "authentic" or "objective" reading of Gurdjieff's music in recent years.

On this ECM New Series disc of 2004, "Chants, Hymns and Dances", Anja Lechner and Vassilis Tsabropoulos decided to take a more liberal, "subjective", approach. Their interest in these compositions is perhaps more "musical than philosophical". Their suitability for this task should be apparent. Lechner's most recent work has involved interpreting the music of both Armenian Composer Tigran Mansurian and the Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov. While Tsabropoulos, for his part, has worked with ancient Byzantine music and the music of the Greek Orthodox Church.

According to the informative liner notes by Steve Lake, "This music exists for the individual to make of it what he or she will, according to capacity". Lechner and Tsabropoulos both have deep experience with composed music and also with the process of free improvisation. Indeed, these two performers brilliantly interpret Gurdjieff's music with gentle assurance and a bright spontaneity. The five original compositions on this disc by Tsabropoulos even suggest an affinity with the Gurdjieff sensibility that borders on predestination.

"Chants, Hymns and Dances" is worthy of repeated encounter and remains serenely vital with each new audition. This is an ambiguous music that defies easy spiritual classification.

This is one of the most moving records I have ever heard. It is a must have for any classical music lover or anyone who appreciates deeply emotional music. So simple, so powerful. Wow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Drum Prayer is out of this world !.......2002-12-26

Wow ! This new release from Steve Gordon is really exceptional. I got it as a gift for the holidays and it just blew my mind. The orchestration and exotic insturments are amazing and the blend of vocals with chants from around the world really creates a trencendent sound. I've been blissed out for the past several hours and can't stop playing it. Spectacular and highly recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Drum Prayer made me feel an akin-ship to the whole world........2002-11-13

I've never written a review before, but when I heard this album, I felt compelled to write my feelings down of what it invoked and share them with someone. I've hardly listened to much native sounding music, but this album is much more contemporary and it reached a place in me I didn't know I had. I just sat there and rocked with the rhythms. Drum Prayer made me feel an akin-ship to the whole of the world. I didn't know what the words meant when listening the first couple of times, I just got into the instrumentation and vocals., They were so joyful, so soothing and visionary that I was compelled to at last read the liner notes. The Sanskrit, Tibetan and Lakota chants added to the native drums, flute and guitar are so well woven together, I can't imagine how it could have been done any better. I have played this album countless times already and enjoy it every time. My favorite track is `Holding the Vision'. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Drum Prayer is entrancing.......2002-11-05

I find this new release by Steve Gordon to be exquisite and perfect for massage, yoga, tantra and ecstatic dance. The blending of diverse instruments and sacred devotional chants are absolutely entrancing, making it exceptionally easy to slip deeply into an exhalted state of bliss. The vocals are particularly beautiful. I have really been a fan of Steve's previous work with both his brother David and Deborah Martin, and with the release of Drum Prayer I feel that he's really outdone himself. I absolutely love it.

5 out of 5 stars Drum Prayer Gets High Praises.......2002-10-23

This new solo project release from Steve Gordon is exceptional. A real groundbreaking piece of work for the genre, combining a variety of nature sounds and indigenous instruments from around the world, with chants for world peace from several different cultures including Lakota, Sanskrit and Tibetian. This recording melds all of these apparently diverse cultural aspects and sounds together into a delightfully inspiring and unified mix of ancient shamanic rhythms and contemporary world-beat music. Gordon has assembled a virtual host of top artists for this release, including brother David on piano, vocalists Jaya Lakshmi (Lost at Last), Lakshami Devi and Laurie Lovecraft as well as percussionists Girish Gambhira and Kim Atkinson and the amazing Sarod playing of Wynne Paris, with Digeridoo provided by Peter Van Gorder and additional electric guitar and synthesizer tracks from Spotted Peccary Music's Howard Givens. Drum Payer is brilliantly uplifting while still remaining entrancingly relaxing allowing the listener to explore uncharted expanses of this new and vivid sonic realm. The vocals are sensational and incredibly serene. The CD has been playing in the background of my home office for the past several days and each new listen reveals something new and deeper in the mix. Truly an extraordinary work deserving of the highest praise. Drum Prayer is an absolute winner !

5 out of 5 stars DRUM PRAYER - STEVE GORDON.......2002-10-14

"As a nature enthusiast, I enjoy relaxing outside, reading a good book and listening to "earthy" music that gives me inner peace. That music is DRUM PRAYER by Steve Gordon. This title is a blend of contemporary world beats and ancient sounds with a flavor of sacred chants. I love the jazz/spanish guitar, feathery flutes, native drums and the ambient dance grooves. This is a winner...a 5 Star!!!" Jeananne/Fullerton, CA

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2005-12-12

This CD is awesome! What a mystical experience. Perfect for relaxing to, reading to, doing Tarot to, doing ritual to, or just meditating to! It's going to be hard to find a CD that tops this one.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure for the travel addict.......2001-12-17

As a travel writer, I've been enchanted by the music and spiritual ambience of places outside our normal range of experience in the US. This CD brings back all the mystery of the world's most enigmatic sites, from Kathmandu to Cairo, Spitsbergen to Patagonia, Hanoi to Nuku'alofa, and Jaisalmer to Moorea. It's a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Cliff.......2000-04-18

Incredible CD. Really. If you want to take an international journey without artificial assistance (except your sound system), this album provides the trip. I was given this album several years ago by someone who doesn't like "new age" music. Yet, I would not classify this work in that category. I have only listened to the soundbites, provided by Amazon, to compare this album with Chris' other works. It is not the same. This is one of the best albums I own. When I am upset, cannot sleep or just need to change the subject in my head's jibberish--it's the only thing that works for me. Thanks Chris.

5 out of 5 stars A mystical experience!.......1998-09-04

This cd ranks very highly as one of Chris' best works to date and receives my highest recommendation! The sounds, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing to the mind as well as the soul. Images of ancient temples will come to mind as you sit back and 'feel' the music.

2 out of 5 stars Not his best effort.......1998-06-13

Pretty disappointing considering some of his earlier work, especially his collaborations with Paul Voudouris. I guess it's an attempt at a more ethnic style of new age music, but he has done much better.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Acoustic Jewish Fusion.......2007-05-03

Basya Schechter and Pharaoh's Daughter have created an album that mixes traditional and origninal contemporary songs, and sounds from all over the world. It is a spiritually uplifting album.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic, unplugged world fusion music.......2006-09-30

From Basya Schechter and friends comes this mesmerizing collection of songs inspired by traditional Jewish music from around the world. The world percussion and group vocals give a folksy feel to the music, and some of the arrangements are lively and even danceable, like "Ija Mia," "Shnirele Perele," "Afilu," and "Lecha Dodi." Others are more like the sort of reflective folk music or light jazz that one might hear in a trendy coffee shop. But all the selections have an air of gentle whimsy about them, as though drawn from hearts and souls that seen the world, forgiven its flaws, and embraced its people with love and understanding. The musicians of Pharoah's Daughter are: Basya Schechter and Benoir on guitars (at least some of which are tuned in quartertones, I think), Martha Colby on cello, Tracey Love-Wright on winds, and Jen Gilleran and Jarrod Cagwin on percussion, a plethora of guest musicians, and just about everyone on vocals at one point or another. For more Jewish music from the far corners of the world, try the compilation album "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World." And if you find "Out of the Reeds" appealing, try also the work of Nana Simopolous, SAVAE (the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble), and Axiom of Choice, as well as Basya Schechter's solo work.

      Album Description

Calabash is the first volume of Afrobeat Poems. Afrobeat poetry utilizes Pidgin English and its idiomatic infusions of English and vernacular Nigerian languages as a medium to reach the listener/reader. The presentation of the poetry with the background of Afrobeat music gives this genre an authentic and fresh appeal. Consistent with the music of Fela Kuti, the legendary originator of Afrobeat, this collection stands true to Afrobeat philosophy: raise pan-African consciousness while entertaining the audience. In Calabash, Ikwunga in collaboration with Dele Sosimi, Femi Elias, and Justin Thurgur, have produced a unique fusion of Spoken Word, African style call- and- answer recital, with a new contemporary Afrobeat.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing work!.......2006-01-03

Amazing CD. Such depth and complexity of lyrics and sound. Excellent examination of current social issues. The musical arrangement is classic afrobeat. Recommend strongly!

      5 out of 5 stars Courageous Adventure!.......2004-12-23

Ikwunga Wonodi's Calabash Afrobeat Poems is an invitation to all lovers of good music. Brilliantly enriched with the infusion of poetry, Calabash...skillfully meshes Afrobeat music with skillfully constructed lyrics suffused with conscious messages and stories. Wonodi's voice, though often fluctuating,
resonates the kind of tone that should grab the attention of fans familiar with Afrobeat music and music inspired by poetry. His style, though influenced by Nigerian/West African pigeon English, is reminiscent of vocalization by Gill Scott, Les Nubians, MC Solaar and Mutabaruka. Cuts such as "I don love", "Go Slow" and "Da Bomb" are obvious classics. Brilliant effort for a first album!!

4 out of 5 stars Cool Concoctions in a Calabash .......2004-11-28

The title pretty much says it all. This is a veritably embroidered calabash of poetry stewing in sweet afrobeat concoctions; a stunning debut and an indication of great things to come. Calabash Vol. 1 finds Ikwunga delivering a set of fresh verses on longstanding concerns. Much of the material here is as long on poetry as it is on titilating music, a provocative mix of pedestrian pidgin and sound that most people will be hearing for the first time. Ikwunga's raw delivery and Dele Sosimi's minimalist Afro-Chill constructions make this a winning disc.
