Barber's string quartet is the source of that famous Adagio for strings, popularized by the movie Platoon in its later arrangement for full string orchestra. It makes an even stronger impression in its original context, sandwiched between two thematically related quicker movements. Ives's two quartets represent the two opposing poles of his character: the early First Quartet is a lyrical work based on hymn tunes, while in the Second all hell breaks loose as the four players literally fling themselves at the music (and each other), until they finally decide--in the words of the composer--to shut up, go out, and view the firmament. The end is suitably cosmic, as are these stunning performances. --David Hurwitz

3 out of 5 stars Great Barber.......2005-04-19

I really liked the performance of the Samuel Barber string quartet. If played well, this, and other of Barber's pieces assume their true position of great, great importance within the American and, most especially, Euro-American composers repertoires.

He is one of the most important composers.

We can hear this here though one could also leave this recording aside after listening to it not knowing the work's great importance as, greater than the identification of the work as such, there is a lovely and incredible personalness from the players in the identifying with this work which they realise is very great (and so do we). Then also what they do is they demonstrate or exhibit a very, very special uniqueness of this piece itself for which I would give the recording 98 or 99 out of 100. It doesn't claim to be definitive at all, the very opposite, and is joyous to listen to and much more. Indeed we seem to visit a vast and seemingly endless world of this.

Much of Charles Ives's music which I know, though I don't know much, I rate in a similar though more personal way though the music is more untouchable and remote to me and in terms of greatness and also, kind of importance, though sometimes I would state great importance.

I have to say that I don't find these performances very convincing or enlightening. I have tried for years to listen to these quartets by the Emmersons but have failed. I haven't heard any other recording of the quartets, which is my own fault. The first of the two pieces for four string instruments starts very well and is inducing and one assumes that the Emmersons are able in this territory, but I think they lose the piece entirely, without doubt, though at various points they convey fluency though this is even more irritating as one can't detatch oneself from the music then.

I have no idea what to make of the second quartet. After imagining, truly and not non-deeply that I was quite familiar and totally confluent with this piece, as it is challenging, for some time, over a year maybe, I realised after this that this was the very most disturbingly avante-garde piece that I had ever come across. And I can only describe it as such, it remains this, and without any extra favourable comments at all in support of the piece, after maybe eleven years.

I have to blame the Emmersons for this, and utterly so. It is the strangest occurrence in my complete familiarity with music.

Perhaps, though, the Barber performance is on a similar level of awe in the domain of a great "telling" for me in my experience, sometimes much more so and I think eternal wisdom is being expressed, and surely and with mature, great, masterly ease is in the expression.

I must get a new recording of the Ives quartets.

5 out of 5 stars Come View the Firmament!!.......2004-01-30

I'm not sure if I could think of two American composers who have less in common than Charles Ives and Samuel Barber. One was the ultimate craggy individualist, completely American to his toes and a fascinating mix of the homespun amateur and the modernist. The other was the ultimate professional composer, possessed of a finely honed technique and a romantic sensibility that made him one of the most popular and beloved, and least "American" sounding composers of his generation. And yet, as this disc attests, the two can sit side by side on the same disc without shame. Especially in vigorous performances like the ones the Emerson quartet give here.

The String Quartet in b minor is Samuel Barber's only foray into the form, one that for him was probably not as congenial as other genres. Though possessed of a marvelous facility for harmony and counterpoint, Barber always seems better with the bigger tonal palette of the orchestra, or at least the presence of a piano in his music. His genius is less individual in this work, at least in the opening and closing movements. The Quartet begins with a brisk Allegro in a solid, conservative neo-classical style. This music returns again in the Finale, though much more briefly stated. In between, though is the gem of the piece; the Adagio which was immortalized by the composer in his arrangement for string orchestra. It is a masterpiece of long sustained melody and inspired contrapuntal writing. In this less familiar version, the work looses some of the passion present in the string orchestra version, but seems more personally tragic, more introspective. This is a lovely work and comes by it's immense popularity honestly.

The Ives works much different, though a careful listening to either string quartet gives the lie to the notion that Ives was an autodidact or basically unschooled. The First Quartet was written in 1896 while Ives was finishing up his studies with Horatio Parker at Yale. The musical idiom is late German Romanticism, with strong influences of Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Dvorak. Yet the work is distinctive in a way that Ives' First Symphony is not. For one thing, Ives uses Protestant Revival hymns in this work, which he was careful to avoid in the Symphony, knowing it would incur the wrath of the Euro-centric Parker. This work also shows a greater sense of craft than the symphony, and a more individual sense of harmony, probably also derived from the homespun harmonies of the hymns. The work opens with a magnificent fugue based on the Missionary Hymn, which will eventually make up the third movement of his massive Fourth Symphony. Other movements are equally beautifully done. The over all impression left by this quartet is of a fresh and original Romantic voice, already outshining the more established American composers of his time. Had Ives continued in this style, he could well have been as beloved as Copland or other American composers of later generations.

While the First Quartet still has it's roots in the harmonic practice of the 19th century, the Second Quartet is a more modernist affair, though in program as Romantic as anything Ives ever did. The Quartet is constructed in three movements - Discussion - Argument - Contemplation. Ives provided a programme for the work which he believed showed the bond between four men who, "converse, discuss, argue (in re: Politick), fight, shake hands, shut up - then walk up the mountain side to view the firmament!" The work is a joyously democratic piece, even celebrating the messiness of democracy. The first movement is mostly slow and extremely dissonant. It gradually builds to a climax in which four tunes are quoted, representing political points of view. In the second movement, everything busts loose. The quartet can't seem to agree on anything, what music to play, what tempo to take. The second violinist, who takes on the character of "Rollo", the name Ives used for anyone who embodied overly refined society, tries to inject a sugary cadenza and is immediately shouted down by the rest of the quartet. The chaos reached a fevered and humorous pitch, with Rollo insistently scrapping away at double stops as if he's having a tantrum while snippets of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky fight for dominance, and finally the political themes reappear in full battle gear and the movement draws to a scratchy and furious conclusion.

But the final movement puts the entire piece into perspective. This is Ives at his most sublime. Otherworldly dissonances start the movement, which gradually builds to the viola's statement of the hymn Nearer My God To Thee, mixed with strains that recall the bells of Westminster Abbey. These themes are then slowly and majestically drawn into a shining D major coda, as if to say that after all the fighting and all the arguments, this alone is what matters, ascending the mountains to see the world in all it's glory and to walk ever closer with God. A more profound statement on the ultimate importance of politics I could not imagine.

The Barber Quartet has a number of competitors on disc, the Ives has fewer. For whatever reason, the Ives Quartets aren't as "sexy" as other Ives works like the Concord Sonata. But in any case the Emerson Quartet fairs well with the repertoire, equaling readings by Kronos and the Linsay Quartet and in the Ives I find them superior to the Lydian Quartet and the Mondrian Quartet. This is a fine release and worthy to be purchased for anyone interested in fine works by fine American composers!

5 out of 5 stars Fine American Music.......2000-06-21

This is one of my favorite discs. The Ives Scherzo is played with precision and drive. The Ives 2d quartet is beautiful throughout. The first movement of the Barber is just flawless, so wonderfully played it's simply inspiring. The Adagio has been nicely integrated into the whole work, and doesn't assume a life of it's own. If you internalized the adagio and came across the first/third movement later, you may not like this adagio. Nonetheless, it is done correctly: Emerson maintains rhythmic consistency and doesn't indulge in unnecessary rubato, which indeed makes any rubato that much more dramatic. It's a very powerful performance of the quartet, and one of the warmer renditions of the secondary theme of the first movement and the adagio. Needless to say, Emerson also nails the first Ives quartet.

5 out of 5 stars Earth and Fire-"Reality Fills Fantansy".......2006-02-06

I agree with the previous writers-here in the US most people have never heard of this group-what a loss. If you start talking about E&F, they think you are mistaken, that you want to talk about Earth Wind & Fire. I used to own this album in 1981, in Africa. I lost it and have never been able to locate it.I credit my interest in music, music appreciation skills and openmindedness to this group. Today I stumbled upon their website-www.earth-and-fire.nl/english/albums.htm.Unfortunately the site was not responding well. But at least now I have hope of finding it. My favorite piece was "Season of the Falling Leaves". I should also say that I was only 19 when I got the album and it was the only one I ever listened to. But listening to all the reviews on this site, I am certainly collecting all the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Hollands 2nd finest ( next to Golden Earring)........2002-04-25

Thank you Ben Miler(previous reviewer)for doing all the hard work for me.I agree 90%.I saw Earth and Fire as warm up for Focus in 72 or 73 and they blew me away. This is very prog-
popish with beautiful vocals and solid instrumentation.
Atlantis and To The World are the more prog of the 3,and Gate is a little more prog pop,but still great. The extra trax here
is what brings this box down to 4 stars, which are mainly
b-sides,and a couple from their first record.I was very happy when this 2disc set was released, because my old records are very worn, too bad they did not put on Song for the Marching
Children instead of the filler.Agreat package indeed.

4 out of 5 stars One of the great Dutch prog rock bands.......2002-02-18

Earth & Fire, along with Ekseption, Focus, Alquin, Supersister, Kayak, Finch, etc. was one of the leading prog rock bands to come out of the Netherlands. Earth & Fire supposedly had a long string of hits in Europe, but you'd never know that from living in America since their music never receives radio airplay here. And despite them being able to rack up the hits, they were able to also give us some great prog rock in the process. Earth & Fire is best known for featuring wonderful female vocals from Jerney Kaagman. 3 Originals features three of their albums originally released on Polydor: Atlantis (1973), To the World of the Future (1975), and Gate to Infinity (1977). Atlantis is by far the best one on this set (although their previous one, not featured here, 1971's Song of the Marching Children is even better and E&F's best, in my opinion). The album opens up with the side length epic, a title track, about the rise and destruction of Atlantis (something many prog bands seemed to know all about, including Eloy from Germany and Ethos from Fort Wayne, Indiana). It actually sounds more like a collection of several cuts instead of a whole side length piece with several themes and ideas segues together. Themes do get recurred, but if you love the Mellotron, Atlantis has no shortage of it at all and the side length cut shows it! The rest of Atlantis features shorter pieces, including the wonderful "Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight". There's the tron heavy "Fanfare" that recalls "Storm and Thunder" from Song of the Marching Children. "Love, Please Close the Door" is a nice, acoustic number that closes that album. Two years later, Earth & Fire gave us To the World of the Future, which shows them changing their musical style. The Mellotron isn't used as much, in favore of more synthesizers. Disco-tendencies beginning to surface like the title track. Also for the first time, they added horns to their music. I have to admit that I have never been all that fond of "How Time Flies", simply because it's overblown, both musically and lyrically. Luckily the next cut is a wonderful, spacy, fusiony instrumental called "The Last Seagull". Electric piano is used as well as string synth and nice guitar work. "Only Time Will Tell" harkens back to their older sound and wouldn't sound out of place on Atlantis. "Voice From Yonder" is one of my favorites, incorporating a seance in the music. "Love of Life" was originally a single released the previous year in 1974 and included on To the World of the Future and was a hit for them. Great piece indeed and it demonstrated where the band was headed once To the World of the Future was released. "Circus" is probably the most progressive number as it goes through several changes and themes. Personally I find To the World of the Future a little weaker than what came before, but it's still worth having. Gate to Infinity is said to be more pop and disco-oriented, which I don't doubt, since the band became even more commercial with the likes of Reality Fills Fantasy (1979) and Andromeda Girl (1981).

4 out of 5 stars underrated group in the USA.......1999-11-07

Earth&Fire has long been disbanded.Strangely no one has ever heard from them in the USA, which is sad. They had some very impressive hits like 'Storm and Thunder""Invitation""Green Park Station" and "Maybe tomorrow maybe tonight" which richly deserved airtime but never got it. For those fans who like rock with a bit of heavy mood try listening to a sound clip.

4 out of 5 stars The all time classic... Edited........2006-10-24

This box is a wonderful addition to any Belafonte collection, not to mention essential for the Midnight Special album's first ever appearance on CD. The sound is fantastic, but there is one glaring problem. On Top of Old Smokey has been edited by one minute. This has been done by the most annoying of fade-outs long before the song is over. Just a warning to those buying it (as I did) to get this, one of Harry's greatest releases, on CD. The rest of the package is stellar (although a very odd mix of albums) for a budget-line product. If not for the bad fade, I'd give this box 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars THE INCREDIBLE "MIDNIGHT SPECIAL" plus 2 1/2 CDs........2005-10-11

Five Stars can't suffice for "The Midnight Special". Six Stars, at least. This entire package of three CDs is a wonderful summary of almost all of Belafonte's best work, but I bought this to finally get my hands (and ears) on a truly remarkable recording that Belafonte surprised us with years ago: "The Midnight Special" which is on the last half of CD #3. With a superlative cast of musicians, like all star saxophonist Jerome Richardson, trumpeter Joe Wilder, and master drummer Don Lamond, Belafonte is ON FIRE throughout the CD, digging much deeper than on his carribean hits and really 'bringing it' vocally. This is a folk and blues MASTERPIECE from beginning to end. Indeed, the title song begins with a cameo from young folk star, Bob Dylan, playing a 'savage' harmonica intro and solo, unlike anything he's ever done since. Belafonte is smooth, intense, and convincing throughout.

"THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL" is primarily a pure folk and blues album, sometimes faithful to old lyrics and sometimes using updated lyrics to capture 1960's Americana. Only one song can be attributed to his usual Carribean song stylings. The lyrics are sometimes stunning, the punch lines shocking at times:

* "Memphis Tennessee": "I got a new way of spelling Memphis Tennessee........."
*"Michael Row The Boat Ashore": "Christian soldiers off to war, Alleluia, hold that line in Arkansas, Alleluia"...
*"On Top Of Old Smokey": "All covered with snow, I lost my true lover for courting too slow, Yes, courting's a pleasure, parting is grief and a cold hearted love is worst than a thief"...
*"Mule Skinner": "I can carve my initials in any old mule's behind".. The background chorus and the multiple guitars are great and Belafonte is really compelling.
*"MidNight Special": "Let the midnight special shine it's everloving light on me"..

Elsewhere you'll find the complete CD "My Lord What A Morning" (Disk 1), "Golden Records, Vol I" (Disk 2) with famous Belafonte hits like "Banana Boat" song, "Jamaica Farewell", "Island in the Sun", "Round the Bay of Mexico", and "Matilta, Matilda". Only "Try To Remember" is missing, but that can be purchased from an on-line music service. (Disk 3 begins with "the "Jump UP Calypso" CD, with "Midnight Special" starting at track 13. This German-made CD set is another in the "3 Originals" series and a MUST HAVE for Belafonte fans and folk/blues fans. Five Huge Stars and beyond for this Belafonte Masterwork classic.

I'm being very generous by giving this trio of albums a 2 star rating. This is a 3rd rate imitation British Invasion Band somewhere in between the Zombies and the Kinks. Their material does not reach any where near the heights pioneered by such Dutch bands as the Outsiders, Motions, Groupe 1850, Q65, and RO-D-Y'S. The first two albums have the edge when compared to the last, more psychedelic album which is quite awful. The singles are by far and away the best material on this set of limp material, which bridges the beat and psychedelic eras respectively. Sound Of A Screaming Day, Daddy Buy Me a Girl, That Day, and Please Go are the best songs on this double disc set and all I believe were decent size Dutch hits. These songs remind me of a slightly tougher Hollies or a less innovative Zombies-like band. Avoid this generic set at all cost and look into buying a Small Faces, Action, Q65, Pretty Things or Outsiders album!

5 out of 5 stars A great deal.......2004-05-24

Here you can pick up Dutch band Golden Earring's RARE original 60's albums for around 20 bucks-a steal. You get "Just Earrings", "Winter Harvest", and "Miracle Mirror". While I'm not into their 60's stuff like I am their 80's and newer work, a lot of people like their early Beatles-era stuff, and for the price, it's a bargain and must pick-up for Earring fans to get most of their original songs for just over the price of a brand new modern album. The lead singer in these songs is a different guy than the guy who sung in Radar Love and Twilight Zone, their 2 American hits. The guitarist (George Kooymans) and bass player (Rinus Gerritsen) are the same guys, though. While I prefer albums like "Bloody Buccaneers", "Millbrook USA", and "Face It", if you're interested in 60's GE, you really can't pass up a bargain like this.

5 out of 5 stars Great covers of classic songs.......2005-04-27

In the eighties and early nineties, while pop music had ever-diminishing appeal for older listeners, Rose Marie built up a huge British fan base by singing covers of old songs from the twenties (or earlier) to the sixties with an occasional song of more recent origin. The big-voiced Irish lady recorded several albums, three of which are packaged together here. If I'd been choosing the three, I would have chosen Teardrops and romance (one of my favorites among her albums, the other being Sings just for you, included here) instead of So lucky (an excellent album in its own right though it only has eleven tracks - the other two have sixteen each) but as I upgraded all my Rose Marie albums to CD many years ago, I've got them all anyway.

Note - in the comments that follow, all references to charts are American except as stated. There were no UK record charts prior to November 1952 although sheet music charts were around.

Sings just for you, my favorite of the three here, contains songs that I was familiar with when I originally bought it on vinyl together with songs that I didn't recognize though (like all her albums except her debut, not included here) every song is a cover. The songs are taken from country music (Make the world go away, Legend in my time), gospel music (The old rugged cross), sixties pop (Hurt) and old standards. These oldies include Sunshine of your smile (#1 in 1916), When I leave the world behind (#5 in 1915), Cry (#1 in 1949), You'll never know (#1 in 1943), My mother's eyes (#8 in 1929), Let the rest of the world go by (#2 in 1920) I apologise (#1 in 1931) and Pal of my cradle days (#3 in 1925). Rose Marie did not limit herself to the big hits. One of the best songs (If I had my life to live over) only just made the top twenty in 1947.

So lucky relies more heavily on the old standards than Sings just for you. Among the classics here are Anniversary song (#1 in 1947), You're breaking my heart (#1 in 1949) and My Yiddish Momma (#5 in 1928), All the love in the world is actually Auld lang syne with a different title. Harbor lights, the most famous song here (apart from Auld lang syne), first became popular in 1937 when top versions made the top ten, Frances Langford doing best with her Hawaiian-styled version peaking at #6. In 1950, five versions hit the top ten with another just missing. Sammy Kaye's version went to #1. The Platters revived it in the rock'n'roll era and had an international hit with it. Rose Marie's version is one of the best though nobody is ever likely to beat Frances Langford's version. Not Sammy Kaye, not the Platters, not even Rose Marie, but all these covers are worth hearing.

Sentimentally yours has more old standards but also has a few songs from the late fifties and early sixties. Who's sorry now, originally from 1923, was revived by Connie Francis so fits both categories. Likewise, What do you want to make those eyes at me for (#3 in 1917) wasa later revived in Britain - by Eden Kane (UK #1 in 1959) and Skaking Stevens (UK #5 in 1987). Other oldies include Let me call you sweetheart (#1 in 1911), Holy city (#2 in 1900), Have you ever been lonely (#8 in 1933), Just one more chance (#1 in 1931) and I'll be seeing you (#1 in 1944). Love letters in the sand (Pat Boone) and Crazy (Patsy Cline) are of more recent origin, though they will still appear ancient to many people

I wasn't into the old songs when I originally bought these Rose Marie albums (or even when I upgraded them to CD). I was just in awe of her singing and wasn't too concerned about where the songs originated. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me, not just because of Rose Marie's music (there were others especially Willie Nelson) and now that I appreciate the old songs, I rate Rose Marie higher than ever. I suspect that, had she made the effort, she could have been a bigger star in America than she ever was in Britain. As it is, her music is almost forgotten now, but certainly not by me.

    5 out of 5 stars Rose-Marie Rocks.......2002-04-26

There's something about the vocal stylings of soulful songstress Rose-Marie that always hits you in the gut. She's a deeply emotional singer that never shies away from "going for it" on a track. She's fond of recording cover versions of popular songs but, in my opinion, often exceeds the original performer's rendition. Her smoky voice somehow manages to resonate in your heart as well as in your ears....I love this album.

Though usually I prefer to have 3 albums individually, but for this compilation, I love to have them in 1 package (2 CDs). I have no more comment except : EXXXCELLENT!!. It brought me to when I first enjoyed KAYAK. Almost all, I have in it.. Thank you Polygram

5 out of 5 stars Three classics in a single case!.......2003-06-16

What a pity that it's almost impossible to get the old Kayak records on CD in Europe! That's especially true for "Starlight Dancer (1977), "Phantom Of The Night" (1979), and "Periscope Life" (1980), which mark the second phase of Kayak after drummer Pim Koopman left, and which I have NEVER seen in any stores in Germany, although Kayak is a Dutch band. Some people say that these albums are crap compared to their earlier ones, but I would like to disagree. "Starlight Dancer" is one of my favorites, because it contains some of the best ballads Ton Scherpenzeel has ever written (e.g. "starlight Dancer", "Irene", "May", and "Dead Bird Flies Forever"). It's true that the Kayak sound has changed into a more pop-oriented direction, which is even more apparent on "Phantom Of The Night" and "Periscope Life". But even those two album have some great highlights. Again, it's the ballads who make them worthwhile. And can you really refrain from getting three classic prog CDs (with 5 bonus tracks, including three quite interesting single B-sides) for a good price?

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent bargain.......2000-02-22

Kayak never really made it world-wide, and this excellent bargain combination makes you wonder why. If you have tried and liked Merlin, this is a good point to continue. Otherwise, I would recommend to opt for Merlin first. That said, this is a beautiful collection, including some of my all-time favourites like the `space-opera' Starlight dancer, the haunting ballad Anne (about Anne Boleyn), the relaxed May and the underrated Dead birds fly forever with some Pink Floyd overtones. In response to some of the other recensions: the USA version of Starlight dancer is indeed totally different from the earlier Dutch version. In the present collection, you get the three original Dutch versions with some nice bonus tracks to boot. Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Finally they did it right!.......1999-10-17

Includes 3 albums as released in Europe + 5 bonus cuts. The sound is much better than earlier CD attempts. This European group was very underrated in America. Great songwriting, musicianship and arrangements. "Phantom Of The Night" is my favorite, though the American version of "Starlight Dancer" is wonderful too.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars classical jazz and rock fusion........2006-07-23

Many groups have mixed classical music with a contemporary style. In the late 60's early 70's a Dutch group named Ekseption did this under guidance of master keyboardist Rick van der Linden and had some successes in Europe with the '5th', 'Air', 'Sabre Dance' and 'Peace Planet'. Though this music is not for classical purists, it is excellent if you like late 60's rock with a jazzy flavor and some mellotron added to your classical assortment.
I have been looking for years for a CD version of their first album which includes a nice little drumbit on a piece called ' Canvas'.Very 60'ish and it would have done nicely in a James bond film at the time. Too bad the sound quality lacks a little.
Another nice piece is 'Partita No.2 in C minor' which sounds like you're under water in some Captain Nemo film with the way it starts out on the mellotron and then goes over into a jazzy concoction of nice keyboardwork.
Not all pieces are outstanding but for the money this 3 album compilation on a double CD is well worth it for those who like something out of the ordinary.

This CD is an absolute gem and a must in any collection of contemporary organ music. Every minimalist fan, 'classical' or otherwise, should also have a copy in their collection.

The four Part pieces are worth the value of the CD alone. The second track 'Mein Weg Hat Gipfel Und Wellentaler', with its gentle floating rhythm is the standout on the album.

The Maxwell Davies pieces are short and very quirky - little musical puzzles. The Glass pieces are vintage Glass, driven and mesmerising in their joyful minimalism.

A must buy CD!!! Purchase and enjoy.
