good soundtrack.......2006-01-13
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .
Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28
Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.
For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.
My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.
Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.
Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.
Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01

The other 3 Fashion Week runway songs are not on this disk. Laura's collection-song is called "Laura's Zest" by Spot On Sounds (Sam Shaffer and Adam Balazs), not on CD to my knowledge but is somewhere on the esnips dot com site. Jeffrey's collection-song is called "Swing", by Jeffrey's band which is called Lifter and features Jeffrey on bass and Mike Coulter on vocals; also not on CD to my knowledge but available at the facecrime dot com site. Michael's collection-song is called "Runaway", I don't know if it's available anywhere.
(I'm sure this CD is fine. ;-)

Product Description
Barefoot Servants is a collective of four friends that have individually played on hundreds of records over the years. Featuring Jon Butcher (Jon Butcher Axis & solo recordings) on guitar and lead vocals, multi-instrumentalist Ben Schultz (Rod Stewart), premier studio and touring veteran bassist Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, James Taylor) and drummer Neal Wilkinson (Artie Traum), Barefoot Servants 2 is the completion of an idea that surfaced 18 months ago a follow-up to their 1994 self-titled CD. Although the bands 94 CD had a decidedly bluesier identity, Ben Schultz calls the new CD, The one we probably should have made then and finally made now. The new disc is definitely more a product of all the music the four of us have loved and been a part of all of our lives. Barefoot Servants 2 is full of inspired playing, accessible songs, honest stories, and street-level portraits by musicians with a great deal of personal experience. As Leland Sklar stated, Weve been around and been part of a lot of music history. With Barefoot Servants 2 we accomplished all our personal goals to make a really honest record that we all believed in and can be proud of. Thats saying a lot considering some of the records weve played on.Customer Reviews:
Finally something to get excited about in ROCK!.......2006-03-21
One Man's Opinion.......2005-09-07
Jon Butcher
Ben Schultz
Leland Sklar
Neal Wilkerson
Eagerly anticipated, this album, two years in the making, is a thing of sonic beauty. Expertly produced and recorded, it is truly one of Jon Butcher's career highlights.
Initial surprise, the tracks are more acoustically based than electric, and an ample amount of Jon's harmonica work spices several of the tracks.
Ben Schultz is the perfect compliment to Jon. His musicianship is outstanding, trading licks with Jon and singing wonderfully throughout. Quite different, in a good way, from Barefoot's 1994 debut album.
No surprise that Leland Sklar lays down magnificent bass lines throughout the disc, proving once again that Lee is one of the world's best bass players.
Neil Wilkerson's crisp, solid drumming provides a consistent backbeat that Jon hasn't had since working with Derek Blevins in Jon Butcher Axis.
Transport to today, new technologies, sophistication, life's lessons learned, an artist, who cares, grows. And still tells great stories with his lyrics. That's Jon. On with the show...
Tracks
1. Pharaoh's House: Remember The Rolling Stones? This is the best track they never recorded. Kicks the album off like the old JBA and Johanna Wild used to do.
2. I Don't Care At All: Mostly acoustic, Jon vocals and sweet harmonica. Dylanesk. 12 string in there? Hmmm?
3. Crazy: Jon up front, in your face acoustic...must be the Taylor guitar sounds so sweet and forward...slide guitar from Ben makes the tune.
4. When The Day Comes: Huge rocker with props to John Lennon and Beatles. Jon grew up a big Fab Four fan..Neil kicks the drums...Beatles "on edge."
5. Rude Boy: An "in your face" rocker, my pick for a video. A "hit!" Jon just like we all remember him, harmonica is great...reminds me of Stones and Clash, but this is PURE JB.
6. Take My Breath Away: Neil's backbeat, "you can't lose it!" Leland, power, clean bass lines. Funky to the point one might think Reggae influence.
7. Bells of Saint Mary's: Spellbinding tune, great story. Acoustic foundation. Jon and Ben work great together on this one. A "live in concert" showstopper.
8. Brown Penny: A classic from Jon, ala Rod Stewart's Maggie May. You can hear "the smile" in Jon's voice in this tune. Jon, always the storyteller.
9. Monsters in Bethlehem: Mostly acoustic, Jon being basic with a feeling within.
10. Crack The Sky: Had to be one Jimi redux. A blockbuster song. The Stratocaster sounds so sweet. Drums flash back to Derek Blevins. Funny how so many people used to compare Jon to Jimi. This is not a Jimi song, it sounds just like Jon Butcher!
11. Love You Too Much: Great drums! Perfect for VH1. Reminds of Jon Butcher Axis days.
12. Dog Days: Power riffs. Jon attacks the strat. Lee blows your speakers up with a great bass line. Maybe a little Jimi or Jeff Beck lurking in there.
13. Phases of The Moon: A perfect sonic end to an imaginative album of music from four true professionals.
This new work from Jon is well worth the wait. Given the appropriate attention from national media and publications, this will put Jon "on the map" where he belongs. A great singer, songwriter, storyteller and, he plays a pretty good guitar now and then. (heh-heh)
Overall recommendation...buy it now and get a couple for your friends.

This is good solid rocking electric blues by a great guitarist.
Not all songs are top drawer, but there are some standouts and the overall quality is excellent. If you like the guitar and the BLUES, you can't go wrong, this delivers.

Never afraid to mine the rich, diverse musical veins of their native Chicago for inspiration, Sonia Dada pushed former backup vocalist Shawn Christopher to the forefront on their previous studio album, 1999's My Secret Life, with gratifying results. As the title of this follow-up hints, the band has further entrenched itself in R&B and gospel, stripped-down and wed to a masterful rhythmic thrust, tastefully restrained guitar licks, and the dramatic instincts of Christopher, a bluesy chanteuse with a telling sense of dramatic scale. It's a deceptively mellow sound that's in fact as laid-back as a coiled spring. They've sacrificed a bit of their eclecticism, to be sure, but they've done so in service of a sound that still rubs Memphis grooves ("Better Brains," "Baby Woke Up") up against jazzy ambiences ("Raise the Roofbeam") and the simmering, modern South Side blues of "Sometimes." But the glorious "Daisy" argues that the band hasn't lost their range so much as slyly refocused it, growing from folksy acoustic lament to full-bodied New Orleans gospel horn romp in four minutes and change. Somewhere, the ghost of Lowell George should be smiling. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
different but just as good!.......2004-10-23
I love this album, I like and maybe love some of their other material. I don't get the fans that don't like this. So it's a little slower....Since my usual cup of tea is Dandy Warhols, Beta Band, Eleni Mandell, Sam Phillips. Latin Playboys and recently Kings of Leon, unfortunately none of my friends like anything by Sonia Dada. What a pity for them!

.....Still waiting.......2002-11-09
Unfortunately, "barefoot Soul" seems directionless, and as a listener I kept waiting for it to take off - which it never seems to do.There is no denying the talent contained within, as anyone who has seen this band live can attest too. But the album fails to deliver, and can only be viewed as a misstep.
