5 out of 5 stars Elvis At The Top Of His Game.......2007-03-10

I have always believed that the reason Elvis Presley attained the title of The King was because he was always at his very best when faced with a challenge that forced him to give of himself everything he had, if not more. ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE is a prime example of this.

Broadcast around the world on January 14, 1973, though not seen in America until April of that year, ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE really captures this towering figure of 20th century American pop culture at a pivotal time. He had rescued a career that was in danger of becoming extinct in 1968 with the Comeback Special; he repositioned himself on record with his 1969 Memphis and Nashville recordings; and his 1972 Madison Square Garden concerts were screamingly spectacular. And then came this.

Setting aside the bombast of the stage show itself (a product of his Las Vegas routine), the sheer magnitude of Elvis' talent by itself is a wonder to behold even today. He throws in not only the great stuff that had already made him a legend ("Hound Dog"; "Love Me"; "Blue Suede Shoes", etc.), but far newer material such as James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues" (which soon became one of the King's 106 Top 40 hits). He also touches on gospel material such as "You Gave Me A Mountain", and country classics such as "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"--all of these things being integral to that uniquely American musical animal called rock and roll. It doesn't hurt either that his band includes fine people like guitar master James Burton, one of the giants.

But for me, the high point of this album is one of the King's biggest latter-day showstoppers, namely "An American Trilogy", Mickey Newbury's adaptation of two Civil War anthems ("Dixie"; "Battle Hymn Of The Republic") and an African-American spiritual ("All My Trials"). He had already done it on his Madison Square Garden album of 1972 with great results, but here the effect is even more stirring and deeply heartfelt. This is a great example of American patriotism from the deep soil of our nation that will be remembered long after the post-9/11 bromides of Toby Keith and Darryl Worley are mercifully forgotten, and it is only fitting that it is Elvis who should be the one to carry it off. As would be part-and-parcel of many of his shows from here on out, the King concludes with that classic song from BLUE HAWAII, "Can't Help Falling In Love."

ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE would go on to be among the King's biggest-selling albums ever, reaching #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart in May 1973 and selling over one million copies. Unfortunately, it would also be the last time that Elvis would ever really be able to get a challenge of this magnitude. Without opportunities like this, though he didn't stop making great songs, the burning passion the world knew him for was replaced by a life of extreme excess that ended painfully and tragically with his untimely demise at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977 at his Graceland mansion.

But when one thinks of what the man was able to achieve during his lifetime, it is easier to put those excesses into a perspective that helps to destroy the image propagated by the tabloids. Elvis was the King, but in many important ways, he was a lot like us--flawed but human. And that comes shining through on this album, one of his greatest albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars For 'King' Lovers .......2007-02-14

If you grew up with and loved the "king," this is the ultimate. I listen to it over and over during car trips, and it's tremendous each time. His "American Trilogy" is a fantastic way to appreciate America.

I have "Aloha from Hawaii - Via Satellite" DELUXE EDITION DVD and for me that is an amazing show, but I can enjoy it only back home. Well, I had a good idea!! I said to myself: "Valeria, you must buy the CD too, so you can hear it wherever you are" And so I bought it!
May I give you some advice?
BUY IT, YOU TOO!!!

I LOVE ELVIS

Back in January of 1973, Elvis performed a concert in Hawaii that was broadcast live on television around the world (although, ironically, it wasn't aired live in America). The concert was a big success by all standards. Elvis was in great shape, and great voice. The material mainly consisted of material he had regularly been featuring in his concerts, with the addition of "I Can't Stop Loving You", "Welcome to My World" and "I'm So Lonesome I Can Cry". Elvis recorded five additional songs for the American broadcast of the concert. These were taped after the audience went home. These are a welcome addition to the CD; "Early Morning Rain" is fantastic. This is a must get CD for Elvis fans.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD.......2006-07-21

Just like the other CD i bought this one to go with my daughter Luau theme birthday party and i found this music to be pretty relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, it's the 101 Strings..........2006-07-14

This is a beautiful CD. Of course, some of the traditional Polynesian chants lose a little without pulsating drums, intoning by the natives and exotic rhythms. (And if you want some local color, get Henry Kapono's Evolution of Poi.) But that aside, this IS the Strings and it's delightful. And yes, there is no "r" in the Hawaiian alphabet, but "Moon over Manakoora" is especially soothing. (Sung by Dorothy Lamour in The Hurricane (1937) - awesome). Just relax and float.

4 out of 5 stars good mood music .......2005-10-16

There are basically three types of songs on this CD: the straight ahead Hawaiian style songs (the kind that make you think of a Hawaiian Punch commercial), then there are the Martin Denny-ish types of songs, complete with jungle animals in the background, and lastly, there are songs with exotic melodies done in a symphonic style, what you would expect to hear in a 101 Strings album. It's a fun CD to listen to.

1 out of 5 stars Hawaiian music from Canada.......2004-05-05

If you are looking to be transported to the South-Seas Paradise of Hawaii for an hour, then please don't buy this CD. I gave this CD the benefit of the doubt when I saw that it was made in Canada, and gave it a spin. Boy, was I disappointed. If you want good Hawaiian music buy IZ, Hawaiian Slack Key Masters, or many others CDs by talented Hawaiians. But don't buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise on a Disc.......2000-06-05

This is my absolute favorite Hawaiian CD. For one-hour, you are transported to the South-Seas Paradise of Hawaii. I wish there were more recordings like this available today.

4 out of 5 stars Great Luau Music.......2007-05-15

Drew's Famous Party Music: Authentic Luau Aloha was GREAT. We used it for our luau and everyone loved the music. I highly recommend this CD for your laua.

1 out of 5 stars A complete waste of money.......2004-06-07

I throw a luau party every summer and thought this would be good to have, but it is unbearable. Truly, I don't know what they were thinking with this one - songs from Jamaica and the Bahamas on a Hawaiian Luau disc, and absolutely pathetic songs at that. It really does sound like a small child, playing poorly, on a piece of crap $5 keyboard. For God's sake, get a Makaha Sons cd, or even the "Lilo and Stitch" soundtrack instead.

1 out of 5 stars Just horrible.......2004-04-25

Don't waste your money on this CD. My mother-in-law bought it for me as a gift on return from honeymooning in Hawaii. I wish I had never opened it so that she could return it. It sounds like something Ross from Friends would invent on his Casio keyboard. I've tried to listen to it three times and have never been able to bear listening to the entire CD. Anyone want to buy it?

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2004-01-22

This album sounds like it was written and performed on a Casio keyboard one afternoon for a dare. I not sure what kind of Party he had in mind when writing it, but it will definately be useful if you need your guests to leave.

5 out of 5 stars The Makaha Sons.......2007-01-09

It is a lovely collection. I enjoyed the blending of the voices and music. I have only 1 complaint and this has nothing to do with the music. After I used my credit card to pay for the music, I had someone try to use my credit card fraudulenty. My credit card company cancelled my card and got in touch with me when it was noticed that the purchases were very high and over my limit. It was a nuisance to have to get a new card, but very good that the credit card company was looking out for me. I had used the same card only 2 times on the internet. One was your order. The other site was Hawaiian music also. Mountain Apple Company was the other company. I thought I should inform you about it and perhaps you can check your security also. Thank you for the music. 3 out of 5 stars Tropical background sounds from an easy listening stalwart.......2001-09-01

Williams' 1958 release for Cadence pairs the balladeering Andy Williams with romantically arranged songs of The Islands. The lush, string-filled charts are more akin to Webley Edwards' "Hawaii Calls" than the jazz-tinged exotica productions of Martin Denny that have recently been in favor with lounge music revivalists. Cadence owner/producer Archie Bleyer used a standard orchestra and Hawaiian-themed arrangements, rather than actual Hawaiian instruments and players, to provide a tranquil, easy listening backing for these erstwhile exotic tunes.

In many ways, the somnambulism that results from this mix is a template for vocal background music. Unlike the instrumental productions that dominate the exotica revival, vocal background music is a trickier proposition. On the one hand, the lyrics should be audible, and the singers should be able to ply their emotional craft; on the other, the productions, as a whole, should be able to fade willingly into the background. Williams and Bleyer strike a good balance, with Williams controlled vocals and Bleyer's arrangements providing enough content to withstand a foreground airing, but with a smoothness that allows for passive listening at atmospheric volumes.

Those familiar with Williams' best known hits (e.g., "Can't Get Used to Losing You" "Moon River") won't find performances here that pack such haunting, emotional punches. The charm here is distinctly more subtle, as befits background music. The one chart success from this LP, a rendition of "The Hawaiian Wedding Song," was lifted from Williams' earlier "Two Time Winners" LP, and two other titles from that earlier LP ("Blue Hawaii" and "Sweet Leilani") were re-recorded for this album. The earlier versions are included as bonus tracks, along with a single, "House of Bamboo."

Liner notes from elevator music expert Joseph Lanza provide an introduction to the album and background on the era in which it was produced, and combined with the bonus cuts and fresh remastering from the original 2-track tapes, this issue is a step up from the version available from the Collectibles label. Fans of Williams' stellar voice and controlled style will no doubt enjoy this turn at Hawaiian melodies.

Hui Aloha brings together four players of the Hawaiian slack-key tradition for a lilting, reposed music that sways as gently as a palm tree's leaves. Guitarist George Kuo and Dennis Kamakahi, both of the respected Sons of Hawaii, joined Martin Pahinui for several gigs around the islands before Dennis's son began sitting in on ukulele. The combo was sweet magic, as is this album, their first recorded collection together. Made up of mostly Hawai'ian standards with a few originals sprinkled throughout, Hui Aloha follows the gentle, flowing qualities of the slack-key tradition while creating a gentle vibrancy through the multiplicity of instruments. Dennis, Martin, and George trade vocals on various cuts, with Dennis's gritty, dark tone billowing luxuriously on the country-tinged "Steal Away." "Monterey Sunrise," composed by Kamakahi on the first morning of 1997, reflects the ebb and flow of the beach's waves in an intimate, enchanting way. There are too many musical gems here to highlight; better to let this charming debut speak for itself through your stereo speakers. --Karen K. Hugg

4 out of 5 stars Steal Away (I want to go back to Maui).......2005-02-24

I'm listening to "Steal Away" right now on Radio@AOL - could have knocked me over with surprise and pleasure, because we heard Dennis Kamakahi sing this very catchy tune and others in a solo acoustic gig at the Maui Ritz-Carlton on Tuesday, February 8 (one of the "Masters of Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitar" evenings.

It was a great evening, enlivened by hula and a wonderful feeling of "ohana."

I recognized Dennis' voice and the song immediately - think I'll be buying this CD very soon.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2003-11-27

Hate to admit it, but I picked this up looking for music for a Hawaiian-themed party. Didn't work for that, but it's absolutely excellent. Nice, mellow, authentic Hawaiian music. The rhythms transcend age...we have two little girls who argue over who gets to listen to Hui Aloha in their room!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2003-10-13

After seeing Hawai'i's Next Generation (Keoki Kahumoku, Patrick Lendeza, Herb Ohta Jr, and David Kamakahi, special guest Dennis Kamakahi) play in Berkely in September, I quickly ordered this CD, although it isn't the Next Generation. I ordered it because some of the songs the NG performed that night were on the CD, and I had to have them.

The songs I refer to are Steal Away and Monterey Sunrise. However, there isn't a bad song on the CD, each one is a star all by itself. One of my favorites would have to be Ke Kuau Laiki, a song Dennis wrote and dedicated to some of his friends who died during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam.

I feel the need to correct a couple of errors from another review of this CD.

Martin Pahinui is the son of slack key great Gabby Pahinui. Cyril Pahinui is Martin's brother, also a great musician.

Slack key is NOT steel guitar. These are acoustic guitars, some of them have steel strings, some have nylon strings. But you wouldn't call a standard acoustic guitar with steel strings a "steel guitar". Slack key is a style. A steel guitar is an actual instrument with its own style, and it looks nothing like a normal guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Music.......2002-12-16

My perspective is not that of a knowledgable fan of Hawaiian music. I'm an open-minded music fan who grabbed this on a whim. And it's excellent. It has the mellow and relaxing quality that people tend to enjoy in Hawaiian music, but is never syrupy. The playing and singing are beautiful, and both the traditional and original songs are excellent. I especially like track #10, which is a haunting song about the Vietnam War. You don't need to understand Hawaiian to get the feeling.

4 out of 5 stars A great mix of ki ho'alu.......2001-11-05

A good mixture of different styles of slack key. My favorite is the first number, "Steal Away", that has a great classicak uke solo by Dennis Kamakahi. Panini Pua Kea is also great, recalling the Sons of Hawaii. Their version of Palolo, though, pales in comparison to the one by the Ka'au Crater Boys.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm A Cement Mixer, Baby; A Churnin' Urn Of Burnin' Fire!".......2004-12-07

I have always liked this album, but I recommend that you buy the newer version with extra tracks and dialogue added. As it is, this is still a great live Elvis performance from 1973. The set is 22 songs long, and also features the traditional "Also Sprach Zarathustra" introduction and a track of Elvis making introductions of the band. Standouts here are led by the best version of "I Can't Stop Loving You" in history: the vocals are powerful, and the band is in top shape, with particular kudos going to the drums and horns. Also strong are "Burning Love," "Steamroller Blues" (even though it's tongue-in-cheek, it's still great), and "A Big Hunk O' Love," which Elvis introduces by saying simply "Big Hunk," a line that always makes me laugh. On the down side is the simply appalling version of "Hound Dog" featuring guitar work that is reminiscent of an unpleasant pre-disco funk that does not compliment the song in the least.

This is a great CD overall, but I would look out for the newer release with more material for essentially the same price. Elvis fans will love this performance, and overall I give it four stars.

3 out of 5 stars Better than Elvis at MSG!.......2004-09-04

Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite released a year after Elvis at MSG,was probably pointless to release. Who needs a live album two years in a row? Aloha from Hawaii is a much better album that the previous live album from Elvis. The set is considerably different, with very little 50's music making it into the set. A few songs are performed very poorly like Hound Dog, but the majority of the album is enjoyable.

        3 out of 5 stars Erratic Elvis.......2003-06-17

Elvis is by far the greatest artist of all time and I am a huge fan owning most of his material but this album is not as good as people make it out to be.In many of the songs he sounds bored and lethargic and much of his passion is lost. The problem with the 70's is you have to sift through live and studio cuts to find gems.Elvis's true artistry was displayed in the 50's and when he came out of the army. Then he started to waver with sub standard material from the films. He redeemed himself with the 1968 comeback special where he sang some of his classic Sun and RCA songs better than he did originally, his voice more gravely and bluesy. From then on his recordings ranged from sheer brilliance to ghastly pap.Research before you buy because RCA will release anything that moves or doesn't move in order to see dollar signs. The colonel would be a Proud Mary.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Aloha From Hawaii: In pre-historic sound.......1999-12-02

It is a great album but do not buy it.

Instead purchase: Elvis Aloha From Hawaii 25th Anniversary Edition

It has remastered sound, added tracks and added speaking parts by Elvis to the audience.

I would only give this origal disc 3 stars due to sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST LIVE CONCERT ALBUM EVER.......1999-04-04

Of all the live ELVIS concert albums, this has got to be considered the best. The song selection was magnificent and Elvis does them all with a special flavor which was his and his alone. Close rivals to this album was the LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN & THE '68 COMEBACK SPECIAL,but neither of these approaches the scope of the ALOHA special. To me, the defining song it this album was AMERICAN TRILOGY and, of course, my all time favorite, his closing CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE. Never a better locale for that song than Hawaii itself..from whence the song was an integral part of the BLUE HAWAII soundtrack.
