Reviewing recently Fats' "live at the Yacht Club" CD,I wrote that it was Fats' only live recording. That was a mistake,but I didn't know this new CD."More radio rarities" consists of two different radio broadcasts : a studio session (tracks 9 to 13) destinated to be used by radios, and live recordings from the Panther Room,Hotel Sherman,in Chicago. The studio session,recorded at NBC studios,NYC,July 5,1938,gives you new versions of some themes Fats used to play frequently: "ain't misbehavin'","the sheik of Araby","handful of keys","hold my hand". The live session from the Panther Room,recorded Dec.3 and 10,1940,is very interesting because Fats plays unique versions of themes never before played by him.The group consist of Bugs Hamilton,tp,Al Casey,g,Gene Sedric,ts,cl,Cedric Wallace,b, and Slick Jones,dms.As always, Fats is in a great mood,swinging through the hits of the moment,"frenesi","Lila Lou","perfidia" (if someone told me I would someday listen to this tune by Fats,I'd never have believed it!!),"dark eyes","Honolulu bundle",or "when you and I were young,Maggie",a tune he recorded during the immense "fine arabian stuff" session.The only shadow is the presence of a vocalist,Miss Kay Perry,who's singing is miles and miles away from swing;but she only "sings" on a couple of tunes,and this doesn't have to prevent you from buying this great record.Another hour of pure joy by the great Mr Fats Waller.

Nice collection, but..........2001-04-23

A nice collection (although, due to the way songs are liscensed in the US, both discs have a LOT more space on them that isn't used) that covers a large portion of the Knickerbockers' best songs, most in remixed form. Taken as that, it's great. However, it *is* expensive, and it falls between "Greatest Hits" collection and "Rarities" collection, making it seem a tad half-baked, and the expense (As I've mentioned) doesn't translate into very many songs. Add to that a bizarre mixup (the wrong version of "My Feet" is used), and you've got something that ends up being pretty much geared towards collectors only. If you want a hits collection, the earlier Sundazed comp should do just fine.

the ultimate collection.......1999-12-28

I have been a fan of the Knickerbockers ever since first hearing "lies" in 1965 and have followed the group throughout their career. It's great to finally have a comprehensive collection on CD in pristine sound. This compilation includes most "B sides" as well as some rare album tracks. Tracks such as "one track mind" in stereo are pure heaven, and the booklet is very informative, including interviews with the band members. The knickerbockers were compared with the beatles and although they did not have that groups range and depth, the energy and talent shine through. Just listen to "stick with me" and "high on love" and you will be swept away by the harmonies and great guitar work on display. This is the only collection you need.

Save your Money and get the Ben Bagley Recordings.......2005-10-03

Sounds like it was done in somebody's basement with only a computer for an "orchestra". One song sounds exactly the same as the next. Obviously, as a "rarities", there are few well known songs here, even to a an R&H geek like myself, but once heard, all are quickly forgotten. Stick to the 5 (and counting?) Ben Bagley recordings of Rodgers and Hart, where they put their heart into the recordings and provide (unlike this set, zero documentation), historical background about the songs and a bit about whey they never saw the light of day.

I did not do one star, only to keep encouraging people to mine the Great American Songbook for more lost treasures. However, as any prospector would tell you, some times things don't "pan out".
