What saves this unlikely combination of flamenco guitar and Native flute is the instruments' capacity for singing and the fine extent to which their masters Ruben Romero and Robert Tree Cody help them sing. While Romero strums and picks vibrant life out of his acoustic guitar, Tree Cody gives loving voice to the collaboration, soaring in plaintive melodies and skipping lightly over rhythms. The wood against wood combo works well with the guitar's full, warm bass contrasting with the flute's bright, flitting texture. The diverse mixture of songs here is strong: "First Words" dances in flamenco cadences from guitar, fretless bass, and percussion, while cedar flute softly sings with background accompaniment; "Star Dance" ambles beautifully along in a playful rhythm with swaying flute lines; "Song of the Gypsy" shows off the immense picking talent of Romero--as well as his passion for the flamenco tradition. There's a slight pinging in Romero's strings that awkwardly calls out on occasion, but other than this small oddity his playing is impressive and intoxicating. A graceful unity of two ancient forms. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars Amazing guitarist.......2003-05-27

Juan Jose Carranza's second CD, Playa Gitana shows a guitarist in his prime. The CD starts of with the title track Playa Gitana which takes you to a beach in Costa Rica. Track 3, Caballo Brillante is a brilliant composition full of passion. Mi Nino is a traditional buleria which proves that Carranza can play a guitar like a master.

5 out of 5 stars Definately Yes!!.......2000-10-10

Okay, he's from Costa Rica, grew up in New York and can't stop his love affair with flamenco, latin rhythms and percussion. With this mix of influences it isn't hard to find yourself captivated with Carranza's latest release, Playa Gitana (Gypsy Beach). An excellent and ambitious follow-up to his previous work on Flamenco De La Costa. Don't take this guy's guitar away, but I've read in an interview that if he were stranded on a desert beach and his last string broke, he'd just keep playing his guitar like a drum. Gotta love that!

My wife and I really like the CD. We have other recordings with Native flute, and Spanish guitar. This is a wonderful combination of the two. Glad we bought it!

    5 out of 5 stars Sensuous Guitar.......2001-07-31

My flamenco teacher uses this CD for our warm up and cooling down exercises, but it is good for more than that. Sensuous guitar - so sexy, yet elegant. Enjoyable for not just flamenco aficionados but great for flamenco virgins as well. Perfect for that romantic evening you plan to have with your amour visiting you at home for the first time. Just you, and the candle light, and guitar....

5 out of 5 stars Excellent flamenco music!.......2001-01-27

Inspiring and beautiful music. Chayito the singer uses her voice beautifully!! Excellent music to feel the DUENDE of the gypsies!!!

4 out of 5 stars More Tradition than Noveau.......2000-12-01

This is something different yet very tradional. The term Noveau is blended perfectly with Flamenco to create something that wanders never far from it's roots. All the songs contained on this CD are represenative of the passion that is Falmenco. Often times Noveau Flamenco is streched too far away from it's roots and ends up in the pop realm. The Moorish and Arabic rhythmns are stated such that they color the CD with authenticity. This CD is a musical troupe essentially playing "juerga", that moment when all aspects, singer, dancer and guitarist all come together. A jam session , if you will, of Flamenco. The improvisational skills dispalyed by each artist on this CD are very beautiful and expressive. The music on this CD lends itself to visual imagery as the dancers heard dancing come to life. The cues demonstrated by dancer, vocalist and guitarist are blended as one so as to never know who is taking the lead. Put this one on a multiple disc changer for a change of pace when listening to other flamenco inspired artists. This is a very good choice for Noveau Flamenco, a sythesis of Iberian and Southwest flavors creating something honoring tradition.
