Rewake is an acoustic-reggae-salsa-space combo from Tulsa, OK. The band has two sounds that are totally different. The live show focuses on their skill at improvisation and spontanaiety. Their studio sound is more refined and well-tuned.
This band blends a multitude of styles into their music. Relying heavily on tribal drum rhythms, you can hear bits of Africa, Jamaica and South America in their sound.

This soundtrack serves up a collision of musical styles, as if the coolest radio stations of Tokyo and New York had suddenly melded into a giant hybrid. The Teriyaki Boyz' opening title track is typical: brilliant production by the Neptunes, East-meets-West mood, more hipness than you can shake a stick at. The Japanese hip-hop group's other offering here, "Cho Large," isn't quite as good but fortunately it's the rare lame-ish track on a CD that overall keeps things on overdrive. Highlights include DJ Shadow's collaboration with Mos Def, "Six Days (Remix)"; Japanese girl surf experts 5.6.7.8's (already familiar to Kill Bill fans) and their uproarious "The Barracuda"; Evil Nine's "Restless," which has the kind of monstrous bass line the Chemical Brothers would kill for; and Atari Teenage Riot's awesome display of digital-hardcore aggro, "Speed" (have these guys ever been used in Dance Dance Revolution?). Even a reggaeton track like Don Omar's "Conteo" somehow fits in this universe, fueled as much by gasoline as by testosterone. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

As the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film in the 2006 Foreign-Language category, this album documents a number of performers out of South Africa. The film vividly portrays ghetto life in the Soweto Township. Fittingly, the music featured is often a gritty but danceable style of local hip-hop called kwaito. This emerging form is strong on beats with plenty of rapping and sing-along choruses. Zola, who does nine of the 19 tracks, is a superstar of the genre and is such a standout here that he should be able to parlay his soundtrack appearances into a music career outside his homeland. Highlights are the hard-hitting "Mdlwembe," the dancehall-like "It's Your Life" and the infectious "Ehlala." Of the other performers, Pitch Black Afro gets taste points on "Matofotofo" for sampling Screamin' Jay Hawkins' classic "I Put A Spell On You." There are a few mellower tracks too, but really this is an excellent survey of kwaito music and its brightest star. --Tad HendricksonAmazon.com
Adapted from a novel by Athol Fugard, Tsotsi is set in the ghettos of Johannesburg and its soundtrack reflects the movie's "boyz in the (South African) hood" grittiness (Totsi, the lead character's name, translates as "thug"). The majority of the tracks are contributed by Zola, who also plays a supporting part in the film and offers a hard-driving yet melodic take on kwaito, a genre usually referred to as South Africa' answer to hip-hop. Among the non-Zola highlights are Pitch Black Afro' "Matofotofo," which starts off with a sample from Screaming Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" before switching to a shuddering bass line. The CD slows down from the driving kwaito pace only when it inserts a score by Paul Hepker and Mark Kilian. Fortunately these tracks are short and serve as a brief respite before Zola comes back in and delivers a harsh final assault. American fans of hip-hop (and American rappers themselves) would be well-advised to check out this disc. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

This soundtrack truly reflects this film........2006-10-10
After watching this film I was able to grab hold of the soundtrack. The tracks were put together by local South African's. The artist who are particularly outstanding are the tracks by local Kwaito artist Zola which uniquely combine local and international hip hop into a new sound, as well as tracks with the inspiring voice of Vasi Mahlasela over choirs, which recalls Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
If you had seen the movie and paid an attention to detail in the spread of the music throughout the film, the middle class family listens to soft R & B on their car radio, in comparison to the township sound that surrounds the Soweto residents indicating their class. Highly recommend to those who enjoyed the film and to those who love world music.

As cliché as it sounds, music does have the ability to bring people of various background and ethnicities together. Think not? Witness Connected, the debut album from the Foreign Exchange. North Carolina-raised MC Phonte, one-third of Little Brother, and Dutch producer Nicolay formed the duo and crafted the ethereally lush hip-hop album without ever meeting face-to-face. Using the marvels of modern technology, the group traded verses and tracks over the Internet. The result is anything but mechanical. Nicolay crafts soulful, intricate backdrops that draw comparisons to producers Pete Rock and Kanye West. On the appropriately titled "Nic's Groove," the producer crafts a pitch-perfect midtempo track over which Phonte and Little Brother cohort Big Pooh trade verses. Phonte also enlists a host of upcoming artists to guest on the set. The group's MC teams with newcomer Median on the emotional "Be Alright." While Median holds his own, Phonte is in full command with a personal lyric about dealing with the ups and downs of everyday life. Meanwhile, "Sincere," which features R&B songstress YahZarah, will have listeners falling in love with hip-hop and each other all over again. Connected is a prime example of the power of good music uniting different worlds. Maybe our elected officials could take a page out of the book of the Foreign Exchange. --Lincoln SmithAlbum Description
The Foreign Exchange first "met" in mid-2002, when Phonte (who resides in North Carolina and is also a member of the underground rap trio Little Brother), heard some of Nicolay's music online and asked to rhyme over one of his tracks. When Big Pooh of Little Brother, lent his vocals to the track, the song became "Light It Up," and was featured as a B-side single for the group's acclaimed 2003 effort, The Listening. "Nic was sending me some of the most beautiful stuff I'd ever heard in my life," Phonte says emphatically. "They inspired me so much that I just had to do something over them." The end result is Connected, a gorgeous and reflective blend of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic soul. While Phonte serves as the duo's main vocalist, the group is quick to point out that Connected is not a "Phonte solo album," and is instead an ensemble record with Nicolay and Phonte acting as the project's conductors. With guest shots from up and comers Critically Acclaimed on the churchy, organ-driven "Hustle, Hustle," and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah contemplating lost love over the melancholy vocal harmonies of "Sincere," Connected finds Nicolay and his multi-talented counterpart uniting artists from different genres under a united theme of good music.

Ave, Os Mutantes.......2005-04-19
And their self-titled debut is probably the best work they ever did, without a single dud track. "Panis et Circenses" kicks things off with a horn solo, and then with a stretch of swooning acid-pop and some angelic-sounding voices. From there on, we get a fun, perky pop song laced with more horns, keyboards and wacky sound effects.
The stuff that follows is much in the same vein, from the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," the downtempo warbles of "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour," and other songs full of Brazilian spunk, sonic clutter, sixties guitar solos, piano ripples, and catchy little songs that never get old. Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.
Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, non-catchy stretches of noise, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?
And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes, panpipes and jungle drums get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar harmonize, and piano is overlaid with train whistles.
Those traditional instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. And the tropicalia gives it an earthy, unique edge that most psychedelica lacks. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious. The most typical aspect of it is the vocal harmonies -- other than that, there is simply nothing to compare this to.
There hasn't really been a band like Os Mutantes since, and until someone decides to revive that underrated sound, there probably won't be again. Mad, wild, crazy, and absolute bliss from beginning to end.

mc solaar the greatest french rapper.......2006-07-05
Alias le Cinquième As.......2006-06-11
In this album, the MC's beats progress... to somewhat of a mix between classic and modern. He recorded this album in Russia, which explains the Cyrillic symbols decorated over the case and the CDs themselves (plural if you get the Limited Edition). Many of the songs on "Mach 6" are filled with orchestrations: a quartet in "Souvenir", among other things, like consistent fusions of hip-hop and symphony.
I found this CD wasn't the same as Cinquieme As... not all artists' efforts come off that way. Most notably, MC Solaar's just about the only person on this album. Sure, he's got his choruses covered by Eric K-Roz, Audrey Chanu, and Julia Sarr, but there's one thing missing... the same kingly spirit of Cinquieme As. Of course, if you want to take it back a bit, nothing about the man himself has changed. He's just cooling down, and it is here he makes wise introspection his number one task. From what I understand, he was pissed off when he made Cinquieme As.
Production is handled solely by Claude MC (that's Solaar), Eric K-Roz, and Alain J. That being said, there's not as much diversity in the beats or liveliness as there was in Cinquieme As (as part of that progression from hip-hop to classic-hop). "La Vie est Belle" is a classic, though, following in the footsteps of "Solaar Pleure" in more than one way. But, as for sounds, you've got the aforementioned, and a bit of jazz worked in with "J'Connais Mon Role".
Another thing that's really interesting is the fact that Solaar took lines from Cinquieme As and made them into new songs. "Hijo de Africa"? That's Spanish, as mentioned in "Hasta la Vista Mi Amor". "Jardin d'Eden"? Mentioned in/sampled from "Solaar Pleure". And, there's probably some I haven't caught yet. If you manage to get past that, you'll find that this is a solid album. I've caught myself waiting for another album that probably isn't coming.
Despite all of the times I might have implied that Cinquieme As may be the better album, I can always find myself coming back to the tranquility and simplicity of Mach 6 (I had it first). Consider it taken down a few notches... 'cause, there really is nothing bad coming from this album.
Either way, if you want this one, get it now... because, it is one of the cheapest listed here; and, you'd be surprised how quickly these Solaar albums sell out.
Very Groovy.......2006-03-09
More catchier than earlier work, but still edgy.......2004-04-21
Another thing that struck me about Mach 6 is its more international flavor. "Au Pays du Ghandi" picks up Indian beats, while "Cash Money" is a great modern samba, and "Hijo d'Africa" is one of the best Afro-Latin songs I've ever heard. This is not the first time Solaar has used ethnic sounds and patterns, but it's the first time he's been able to do so beyond the superficial level. In Mach 6, Solaar proves that he understands the music of other cultures, that he can break it down, explore its nuances, and then re-construct it in his own way.
If you like Solaar, this is a must-own album. Truly brilliant, from a brilliant musician.
Mach 6 Great album!!!.......2004-01-13

UPDATE:
Since I wrote the above I have been entrapped by this album. I cannot get away from it. This is one of the greatest albums ever. You haven't heard music fully until you've experienced this. I don't know anything like it and I don't think I ever will. Wow. The eerie slow play between the bass, drums, and guitar. The meandering talking of Serge as he leads you through this strange 28 minutes of love and lust. The strings and chorus. Oh the strings and chorus! Ahahahaha! Sweet infinity! I can see this being the album that takes over me life and leaves me for ruin. If you don't have this album, I'm sorry. If you have this album, I'm sorry.
Why did it take so long for me to hear about this? What's wrong with the world?
Elaborate Eurotrash - best when not translated so as not to offend the bluenoses.......2006-10-11
Serge, jaded and driving his Silver Ghost Rolls Royce, with its "Venus of Money of 1910 posed on the radiator," swerves off the road to find a "white skirt tied onto black pants" calling herself "Melody Nelson" with natural red curls. Evidently Serge wants an English trophy to go along with his fancy English machine! Her age? "Quatorze automnes - Et quinze étés - Un petit animal."
Best not translated. Anyway, this stuff wouldn't pass muster in the USA today.
I give "Melody Nelson" five stars for the beauty of its orchestral arrangements. Serge really knew how to get the groove out of his session musicians!! Check out "Requiem por un con" for further grooviness. Unfortunately this record is only 32 minutes long.
Guaranteed to Make you at Least 25% Sleazier...........2006-09-08
This album is arguably the most consistent and cohesive of Serge's albums, and although running at a fairly brief 27 minutes, it's a fascinating record, one that is by turns funky, humorous, Hedonistic and Sensual, and has a such a tongue in cheek, carefree swagger about it, that you can't fail by be impressed by the sheer audacity of it all. Those that had (like me) only really know Serge's work via his hit single "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus", would do well to give this a whirl. It really highlights how overlooked his work really was, and that most people initially had him pegged as a dirty old Frenchman, who got lucky with a saucy single. It's shamelessly overblown, impossibly cheeky, beautifully arranged, and impeccably performed...and most importantly it's a lot of fun to listen to. Those buyers looking for the hits (or the nearest his songs became to be popular), would be well advised seeking out one of the many compilations bearing his name, but those that are interested in hearing what the pinnacle of his work sounded like, simply must check out this funky little gem. Recommended!!!

The music of Puerto Rican outfit Calle 13 simmers like so much sweat on the backs of b-boys and fly girls, twisting and turning its way through the cracks and crevices of modern urban music. Calle 13's dynamic duo--half-brothers Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra--are smart, shocking, and silly. It's a thrilling combination that makes for some hip-swiveling, head-turning sounds. Standout tracks "La Hormiga Brava," "Vamo Animal," and the rocket-fueled single "Atrévete-te-te" careen between street sounds and lush Latin rhythms, anchored by the group's mischievous sense of humor. Reggaeton is the label that's been slapped on this inspired hybrid, but Calle 13 is light years beyond that often stifling genre (which explains recent collaborations with Nelly Furtado and Alejandro Sanz). Latin rap riffs, new-wave keyboards, and a sprinkling of pop smarts chart a musical path (and crash together during "Sin Coro") that Calle 13 will likely lead--and veer from--in the near future. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

just listening to the sets of syllables that are tied together, along with great breath control, not to mention a pretty melodic voice for a rapper (without being annoying), it's obvious that he's got some talent on the mic. add to that the fact that every one of the beats are straight slappers, and you've got yourself one hell of an album to rock out to, at the house with some bottles, or smashing down some backroads. i'm a white guy into clever, witty and lyrically complex hip-hop, so i wonder how much more hate i could get for jumping on this "reggaeton" deal, but i would mos def (not the rapper) pump this at a club, house party or just smashing on the road.
bottom line, if his lyrics are actually as sick over the killer beats as they sound, you should add another star to this review.
the puffy skit is great too. stop the watered down pop-rap!

I think this music is intended for adults, though the photo on the cover is of a sleeping baby. In any event, Schumann's work, Scenes From Childhood, Op. 15, featured here is more likely to bolt you out of bed than put you to sleep, as the mike is far too close to the piano being played by Cyprien Katsaris. Purcell's Adagio from The Indian Queen is magnificent, performed by John Elliott Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. The Weird Award goes to triple harpist Tim Hobrough and lutenist Stephen Barber for their bizarre, spiky rendition of Minuets Nos. 4 and 5 from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. ...and It STILL Sounds Sexy!!!.......2006-06-02
Comic Strip can best be described as droll camp. Gainsbourg sings as though he were mocking the musical forms that he is embracing, giving each track a coy sexiness that permeates the entire project. In its time, "Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus" (translated as "I Love You...Neither Do I") was considered so sexy that it was banned in numerous countries, while Brigitte Bardot (!) provides guest vocals on "Bonnie and Clyde". Imagine Ray Davies as an ugly, sensuous Frenchman with a taste for the theatricality of lounge music super-hero Esquivel, and you'll get a pretty good idea of what this collections sounds like. Throughout, Gainsbourg's songs sound like a product of the ambitious sixties (which they are), even though he ignores what everybody else was doing. Simply put, he was an iconoclast who hammered out a niche that is his alone. Pardon my French, but Comic Strip has a certain `gene se qoi'. A- Tom Ryan
Brilliant in spots, good for something different.......2005-07-09
Anyway, if Serge is forever a talented hack, a visionary who can't sing and coasted along on playboy faux-cool, well it is his ultimate triumph that he pulled it off. Chutzpah, the mother.
I like the strange little guy. He was a perv and a freak but he represented a certain breezy raison d'etre, and nailed various hot ladies eventually to co-produce Charlotte, a daughter as lovely and charming as... such a man could hope for.
COMIC STRIP is the one Gainsbourg you'll ever need - fun and silly and so very French. Good to confound houseguests who won't know it that well but will asume it must be hip.
A Chapter from the Uneven Career of Serge Gainsbourg.......2004-11-24
Pop music in France in the mid-60's was in the pits, but it was exploding over in England, so Gainsbourg decided to do this album in London with English studio musicians. I'd say that about half the songs are good. It was the beginning of the "Shocking Serge" phase of his career; he started out as a Left Bank singer-songwriter who developed a nicely ironic approach--e.g. the "Javanese" album. Then he started going for high-publicity stunts, like "Je t'aime". If you can find a version with Brigitte Barbot instead of Jane Birkin, it's better: Brigitte really knew how to moan and breathe heavy. Anyway, while always denying he was out for publicity, Gainsbourg kept manufacturing one scandal after another into the '70's, like the reggae version of "La Marseillaise", or the song "Lemon Incest" which he sang as a duet with his daughter Charlotte, or into the '80's with his songs about S&M, until he became a self-parody. He even created a persona for this self-parody, i.e. a character named "Gainsbarre".
Anyway, back to "Comic Strip". Gainsbourg was always experimenting with new styles and when he picked a style, he always got legitimate musicians of that style to accompany him. When he dabbled in Brazilian music, he got Brazilian musicians; when he did reggae, he got musicians from Kingston; when he did Mod Pop, like on this album, he got English Mods to do it. A lot of it sounds dated and the lyrics sometimes aren't all that clever, but I guess that's part of the reason there is Gainsbourg mania in the U.S.; good lounge music has to be at least somewhat stylistically passe.
